A ROMAN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF FAITH THE CHURCH OF SAINT PAUL THE APOSTLE Mother Church of the Paulist Fathers Columbus Ave & W 60th Street Feast of the Baptism of the Lord January 12, 2014 Joy of the Gospel Apostolic Exhortation Pope Francis Servant of God, Isaac Thomas Hecker, CSP 1819 - 1888 “In first place, we can mention the area of ordinary pastoral ministry, which is “animated by the fire of the Spirit, so as to inflame the hearts of the faithful who regularly take part in community worship and gather on the Lord’s day to be nourished by his word and by the bread of eternal life”.[11] In this category we can also include those members of faithful who preserve a deep and sincere faith, expressing it in different ways, but seldom taking part in worship. Ordinary pastoral ministry seeks to help believers to grow spiritually so that they can respond to God’s love ever more fully in their lives.” Mass Schedule 8:30 am, 5:15 pm (Vigil) 8 am, 10 am (Choir), 12:30 (Spanish), 5:15 pm (Young Adult), 7:30 pm (Fordham) Saturday Sunday Weekday 7:30 am, 12:10 pm Reconciliation Hours Tuesdays & Thursdays Following 12:10 Mass Saturdays 4:00 - 4:45 pm Visit the Tomb of Servant of God, Father Isaac Thomas Hecker, CSP, founder of the Paulist Fathers located in the northeast corner of the Church. For more information visit www.openingsny.com Purgatorio is the second part of Dante's Divine Comedy, following the Inferno, and preceding the Paradiso. The poem was written in the early 14th century. It is an allegory telling of the climb of Dante up the Mount of Purgatory, guided by the Roman poet Virgil. Allegorically, the poem represents the Christian life, and in describing the climb Dante discusses the nature of sin, examples of vice and virtue, and moral issues in politics and in the Church. The poem outlines a theory that all sin arises from love – either perverted love directed towards others' harm, or deficient love, or the disordered love of good things. Please join us for this exciting discussion! RSVP to welcomecenter@stpaultheapostle.org or sign up at the WelcomeCenter. Poets@StPaul Gathering Monday, January 27th / 7pm to 9pm William Blake once defined the work of the poet: “To see the world in a grain of sand and eternity in an hour.” This month’s gathering asks, How have we taken the precious but ordinary things of life and sung their song? Have we uncovered the eternal in the transient moments of our day? To do this is to follow a clear path to poetic thought. In a world filled with “instant” everything, there is another world that attends to a slower, deeper rhythm. It is just a single dimension away. All are welcome at these gatherings: poetry writers, poetry lovers and the poetry curious. We meet at the parish center of St Paul the Apostle Church, 405 W 59th Street. Free and open to the public. Come and visit New York Encounter January 18 and 19 Manhattan Center on West 34th Street @ 8th Avenue New York Encounter is a cultural festival to foster dialogue between faith and the public sphere of life. 6 Please remember in prayer the following Paulist Fathers, the anniversary (day/year) of whose death is this week (*denotes served at St. Paul’s): Joseph L. Father Isaac Hecker, CSP Founder of Paulists and 1st Pastor of our Parish It seemed to me in looking back on my career before becoming a Catholic, that Divine Providence had led me as it were by the hand, through the different ways of error, and made me personally acquainted with the different classes of person (and their wants) of which the people of the United States is composed, in order that having made known to me the truth He might employ me the better to point out to them the way to His Church. That, therefore, my vocation was to labor for the conversion of my non-Catholic fellow countrymen. [A Narration of His Life, The Paulist Vocation, p. 55] Each week we ask our readers and parishioners to pray for the sick listed in our bulletin. You can add a name by contacting the parish-center 212-265-3495. We will continue to list the name of the person for one month unless otherwise notified. The Power of Prayer is an important part of healing. Gluten-Free Communion Hosts If you require gluten-free hosts during communion, please talk to a priest at the back of the Church before Mass begins. Thank you! 7 For more information about the sainthood cause of Fr. Isaac Hecker, go to www.paulist.org
