Gender Matters
by Pastor Bill
Wrestling with one of the most controversial and divisive topics facing
America today, the U.S. Supreme Court will issue a national decree related
to same-sex marriage by late June of this year. As of 2010, a majority of Americans have
favored the legalization of same-sex marriage. Does the Bible concur with the direction
our society appears to be heading?
Frank Bruni claims it does. In an April 3, 2015 article for The New York Times, he argues
that Christians have altered their viewpoint of woman’s role in church and society, despite
what the Scripture teaches, and that they should likewise adjust their century’s old viewpoint about same-sex marriage. He quotes Jimmy Creech, a former United Methodist
pastor who was removed from church ministry after he performed a same-sex marriage
ceremony in 1999: “In the United States, we have abandoned the idea that women are
second-class, inferior and subordinate to men, but the Bible clearly teaches that... We
have said: That’s a part of the culture and history of the Bible. That is not appropriate for
us today.” (The New York Times, Sunday Review, “Bigotry, the Bible, and the Lessons of
Indiana,” April 3, 2015).
Both Bruni and Creech are in error. The Bible as a whole does not teach that women are
second-class citizens. Just the opposite. In cultures that suppressed females, Jesus, Paul,
and the biblical writers elevated them to a place of honor. This is one of the great distinctions between Christianity and ancient pagan religions.
It is true, however, that there has long been confusion among Christians about the extent
to which women should be allowed positions of leadership in the Church. It comes down
navigating the interface between timeless biblical principles and our time-bound culture. A
divided opinion about women in leadership has accompanied the church for its 2,000-year
history. Perhaps the Bible is more ambiguous on this matter than some on both sides of
the issue are willing to admit.
Despite the lack of clarity in the Bible about the role of women in church leadership, the
biblical prescription for marriage is crystal clear. When Christ and his followers highlighted
God’s standards for marriage, they referred back to the created order given by God from
the very beginning (Matthew 19:1-4). God made them male and female. In God’s created
order, marriage is to be a committed union between a man and a woman.
Our society, however, has lost confidence in Scripture. For many people, marriage is no
longer a timeless institution, but rather a optional tradition that can be reshaped to accommodate the whims of the day. Its definition has become a political hot potato, bouncing
between courts of human opinion and courts of law.
We do well to ponder the words of Genesis 1:27, “So God created mankind in his own
image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Both
genders are important to God. Like two parts to a whole, male and female express the
person and purpose of God.

Session Highlights
Session met April 20 with 17 of 18 elders present and with Sam Elliot
representing the Deacons.
Consent Agenda:
• Worship received approval of approximately $130.00 from Payne
Designated Fund for the purchase of 6 Flag poles for Kirkin’ of the
Tartans banners. Also from the Church Banner Designated Fund, we
approved the purchase of a banner at the cost of approximately $90,
with the cost being covered by a church member;
• Outreach received approval of $4060 to Samaritan’s Purse from the
Operation Christmas Child Designated Fund to cover the shipping
costs of $7 a box for nearly 800 Operation Christmas Child boxes we
sent last year;
• Global Missions received approval for $300.00 from the Global
Missions Designated Fund for Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, for
UNC-Asheville scholarships for three $100 scholarships for
Intervarsity students at UNCA to attend the annual May Rockbridge
Chapter Camp;
• Christian Education received approval for our Boy Scout Troop to
hold a carwash fundraiser in the parking lot, sometime in June.
Deacon Sam Elliot led a beautiful prayer for those in need in our
congregation after a discussion of those with various health and
bereavement needs.
Treasurer Larry Mobley received approval to add flexibility and
efficiency to the standard authorization guidelines, and because the
Session recognizes that requested disbursements are typically estimates, that the actual expense to be paid should be allowed to exceed the approved amount by 10%, or $25, whichever is more,
without requiring further approval by the Session. Giving through
March was $175,795, with expenses of $199,646. Larry also reported
that there is also approximately $30,000 in the matching Outreach
Endowment Fund to replace our lost Lovett Fund.
The Officer Nominating Committee Chair, Marguerite Martin, started
the process for selecting this year’s representatives for the committee, and a congregational meeting was approved for June 7 for the
congregation to elect the nominees for the committee.
Approval was given from Cooley Designated Fund for the purchase of
an outdoor double-sided (triangular) banner stand with the banners to
publicizes King Street contemporary service and the Awake Gatherings. This type of banner may be moved in at night and changed from
day to day. Approval was also given to publicize the Cystic Fibrosis
Walk on May 2.
A good portion of the meeting was spent discussing how at this point
we might most effectively move forward in strengthening and improving
our King Street contemporary worship service into a growing future.
The Negotiating Team reported that they have received no further
communication from the Presbytery’s Administrative Commission
since our most recent letter was sent to them about five weeks ago.
This is after they took two full months to respond to our last offer
made at our mediated meeting of December 16.

DEACONS
CORNER
TO THE CHURCH
TRIUMPHANT
Meet Deacon Judy Durant
In my second term as a deacon this year. I’ve been assigned
duties I particularly enjoy: Shut-in Visitation Coordinator, Care
of Staff Chair, and Liaison to Interfaith Assistance Ministries (IAM).
I love visiting our members who rarely, if ever, are able to attend
church. Why? Because they are a wealth of interesting information and
also are an inspiration to me as they tell me how “blessed” they are, in
spite of their physical infirmities. I have worked at IAM since moving to
Hendersonville because I am so impressed with its purpose, work
opportunities, excellent management, and, to me, the best use of resources around. Care of Staff is new to me, but who couldn’t love caring
for our cream-of-the-crop staff!

I’ve lived in the south all but the first 15 months of my life. If you think
I’m a “charged up” person, you might be right because I was born in
Hanford, WA, and have lived around and worked for nuclear plants most
of my working life. I have also been a third grade teacher, a social
worker, and a clerk/secretary.
Our Christian sympathy
is extended to their
families and friends.
My favorite things to do are gardening, meeting people, traveling, reading, volunteering, and attending our fabulous Sunday School class and
Bible study. I also love spending time with my balding husband and my
hairy dog.

SPECIAL THANKS FROM
THE STOREHOUSE
As The Storehouse celebrates their 15th year of service
to the hungry residents of Henderson County, we are
most grateful for your support.
Because of the generosity of you and others in the community, we served 377 families (including 673 individuals), with 893 boxes of food in March. We had 32
new cases. Year to date, 2,674 boxes went out the
door, and we had 142 new clients.

Project Big Start
Mentoring Works! Under Project “Big Start”, Big
Brothers Big Sisters is partnering with Dana,
Bruce Drysdale, Sugarloaf, and Upward Elementary schools. BBBS is targeting 1st, 2nd, and 3rd
grade students to receive a mentor. Children in
poverty are more likely to start school with
smaller vocabularies, fewer learning opportunities
and less academic support. They start behind
and continue to fall behind, year after year. You
can give them a BIG START! Research has
shown that a mentoring relationship helps children to achieve better grades and to feel more
confident in their abilities.
In an hour a week, you can change a life for the
better!
Feel free to call BBBS at 693-8153 or see Jean
Boots or Bob Thrower for more information.

INTERFAITH ASSISTANCE MINISTRY (IAM) helps
citizens of Henderson County who are in financial
need. Every effort is made to provide families with
nutritionally balanced meals and essential care products.
The IAM focus for May is canned pasta, healthy
snacks, mac and cheese and eggs. Other non-perishable foods and personal care items such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap, disposable razors,
etc., are always welcome.
Clothing needs are men’s and boy’s t-shirts,
children’s and men’s shorts, and sheets and
pillowcases.
You can leave your donations at the church.
Remember the Letter Carrier’s Food Drive May 10.
Just hang your bag of food from your mailbox. A
recently trained lady at Interfaith said, “It took me 10
years to find this place (to volunteer). Now I wish I
had come here the first year.” There are many opportunities for you at IAM. Just to name some: Pantry
Worker, Client Receptionist, Intake Interviewer,
Clothing Closet, File Manager, Administrative Receptionist, Special Mailings, Grocery Store Pickup. You
will be given your choice, as available, after you are
rotated through all the jobs so that you can make a
knowledgeable decision. If not available for four
hours a week (when you are in town) consider contributions of food, clothes, linens, or money. Call the
Attic at Grace Lutheran Church to donate furniture
which is distributed by IAM. Come on out and take
a look.

local church.
Jesus says: “Lift up your eyes, and
see how the fields are already ripe
for harvest.”

a bearer of good
news. Fulfill your

SUPPORT OUR SCOUTS
Cub Scouts Are Active
Our newly formed Cub Scout Pack 628 has been quite busy during these
past few months. Bobbi Call, the cub leader, with the help of several
parents has provided many activities for the cub scouts as they pursue
advancement recognition. Plans for May include visiting the Fire Department in Hendersonville, going on a bug hunt and fun outdoors at Jackson Park, and planning for fishing and/or other water related activities.
They just completed kite making at Jackson Park, a magic show, and pet
care activities.
The boys are having lots of fun as they participate in these activities.
The church’s sponsorship of the pack helps make this opportunity for
boys aged six to ten possible. Thank you for that support.
If you would like to visit the pack and/or help the pack, they meet on
Thursdays at 3:30 pm in the children’s classroom 112 of the church.
Please call ahead to the church office because they might be elsewhere
visiting and learning in the Hendersonville area.

CHILDREN and YOUTH MINISTRY
Children’s Ministry had an exciting April. We had our Easter Egg Hunt on
April 4th with the Pancake Breakfast. Lots of kids and LOTS of eggs.
Thanks to everyone who filled eggs and helped us with preparations for
this annual event.
Then on April 12th our Children’s Choir participated in the Festival of
Hymns. They enjoyed singing with the adults AND with the organ. It is
always exciting for them to sing with the organ. I did have to explain to
one of our younger members that Miss Gayle does NOT wear bedroom
slippers to church (!) but that those were her organ shoes, because she
is not only playing with both hands but also with her feet. This caused
GREAT amazement!
Now we are busy preparing to sing on May 17 and May 31. We have a
special presentation for May 17 that ties into the sermon series from the
book of Daniel. And, of course, on May 31 we will be wearing our international costumes to observe Pentecost and the birthday of the church.
May 31 is also PROMOTION SUNDAY so our 3 year olds, those going
into Kindergarten, and those going into third grade will be receiving
Bibles. This will be part of the worship services on that date.
Vacation Bible School is on the horizon. Please plan to sign up your
children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors, etc. It promises to be an
exciting week!

STEWARDSHIP
Tony Campolo tells of being invited to speak at a
ladies meeting. There were 300 women there.
Before he spoke, the president of the organization read a letter from a missionary. It was a very
moving letter. In the letter the missionary expressed a need for $4,000 to take care of an
emergency that had cropped up. So the president of the organization said, “We need to pray
that God will provide the resources to meet the
need of this missionary. Bro. Campolo will you
please pray for us?”
Tony Campolo, who is very outspoken, said,
“No.”
Startled, she said, “I beg your pardon.”
He said, “No, I won’t pray for that.” He continued, “I believe that God has already provided
the resources and that all we need to do is give.
Tell you what I’m going to do. I’m going to step
up to this table and give every bit of cash I have
in my pocket. And if all of you will do the same
thing, I think God has already provided the
resources.”
The president of the organization chuckled a
little bit and said, “Well, I guess we get the point.
He is trying to teach us that we all need to give
sacrificially.”
He said, “No, that is not what I am trying to
teach you. I’m trying to teach you that God has
already provided for this missionary. All we need
to do is give it. Here, I’m going to put down all of
my money I have with me.” (He wrote, “I only
had $15 in my pocket so I wasn’t too worried
about that.”) Then he put down his $15 and
looked expectantly at the president of the organization. Reluctantly, she opened her purse and
took out all of her money, which was about $40,
and put it on the table.
One by one the rest of the ladies filed by and put
their money on the table, too. When the money
was counted, they had collected more than
$4,000.”
Tony Campolo said, “Now, here’s the lesson.
God always supplies for our needs, and he
supplied for this missionary, too. The only
problem was we were keeping it for ourselves.
Now let’s pray and thank God for His provision.”

SUPPORT
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
Members of Hendersonville Presbyterian
Church are so loving
and giving, as reflected in your growing response each
year to OCC. As you
know, we could not be as
successful if we did not work on this throughout the
year. Our committee members are constantly on the
lookout for bargains on items that can be added to the
shoeboxes. We would like for you to join us in this
endeavor, but we’d like to keep
it simple.
Each month, on the third Wednesday of the month,
when you come to dinner, please bring some of the
“Item of the Month” items with you. Below are the
dates of the Wednesdays and the items to bring:
May 20: Soap and washcloths
June 17: Toothpaste and tooth brushes
July 15: School supplies—crayons, colored pencils,
pencils, pens, erasers, pencil sharpeners, rulers
(less than 12 inches preferable), glue sticks but NO
liquid glue
August 19: Paper and scissors—Small notebooks
that will fit in a shoebox, lined notebook paper, a pack
of plain copy paper, colored paper, small coloring
books, small scissors
September 16: Hair supplies—combs, brushes,
headbands and other hair accessories, but NO
hairspray or gel
Please mark these on your calendar so you remember. But if you do forget or miss a Wednesday night
dinner, no worries—you can just drop off your items in
the boxes marked for OCC.
Also, please consider donating something for our
Teacup Auction associated with the Bazaar on
September 19, 2015. Challenge your Sunday School
class, Small Group, or other organization to put
together a basket, and be creative! Or maybe you
have a lovely artistic piece or other special item that
you would like to donate. Information about these
donations can be obtained through the church bulletin
or the church office.
We cherish both your donations and your prayers!
Thank you for your blessings.

GLOBAL MISSIONS
STEVE AND MARGIE DOTY
WYCLIFFE BIBLE TRANSLATORS
THAILAND
“Although we live in
Thailand, most of the
Bible translation and
literacy work we help
with actually occurs in
other countries. One
reason we live in
Thailand is the presence of Payap University, Thailand’s first private (and Christian) university,
where we can train people from other Asian countries,
who can then return home and do translation and
literacy work.
“Steve currently teaches a translation course to
students from three countries. His students are
motivated to learn how to translate the Bible so they
can someday communicate the Gospel in other
languages. Steve is giving them practice with lots of
assignments in which they follow the various steps in
the translation process. Later, he hopes to go visit
them in other countries and check their work.
“We recently made a trip to a nearby country to check
the translation work of one of our former students. It’s
a country that does not allow missionaries to work
openly, so they needed to keep a very low profile
while there. Please pray for this former student,
‘Grace,’ who is bringing God’s word to a large people
group that has never had it before. Although she’s a
citizen of that country, she is endangering herself by
reaching out to this group, learning their language,
and translating the Bible. Later this year, Grace will
come back to Thailand where Steve and others will
train her to be a Translation Consultant who can
check other translators’ work.
“The Medal of Honor:
Robert Maxwell’s Story”
A unique and important video of the life of our
nation’s oldest living Medal of Honor recipient, Robert
Maxwell, and his faith was just completed by one of
the missionaries we help support, Pastor John
McWilliams of International Biblical Training, USA.
Bob spoke to the congregation where Pastor John
worships back in October and he impacted so many
people with his message, that the congregation paid
to fly Pastor John out to Oregon where Bob lives, hire
a professional video production company and shot
this 1 hour video interview with Bob.
We recommend that you take time to watch the whole
video and then share it with someone else, especially
someone who is a non-Christian. The video is designed as an evangelical tool which you can use to
both encourage other Christians and lovingly challenge non-Christians to consider the reality of God
and the necessity of accepting Christ as our Savior.
You can watch and download it free from https://
vimeo.com/125098415 and you are free to copy it,
share it and make DVD’s of it in any way you choose

LIBRARY
NEWS
CHASING SUNSETS
by Karen Kingbury
A new book you will want to read is
Chasing Sunsets by popular
Christian writer, Karen Kingsbury.
This is a sequel to her “Angels
Walking” series in our library.
Karen Kingsbury began her writing
career as a sports reporter for Los
Angeles newspapers. She has
authored over 50 books, 10 of
which have been #1 on national
bestseller lists. Her books include
true-crime accounts, collections of
real-life miracle stories and Christian fiction.
In Chasing Sunsets you will find an
inspirational story of two people’s
longings of the soul, and the
sacrifices they’re willing to make in
search of what they believe is the
right path. But sometimes God
has other plans! These books are
about divine interventions and
second chances!
The author states, “In 2007, a
police officer prayed with my mom
in the aftermath of my dad’s
sudden heart attack. When my
mom called to thank him, there
was no such officer by that name.
We don’t know if the man was
really an angel. But there seems
to be no other explanation. It was
for this reason that I wanted you to
see angels at work in my series. . . .
My prayer is that you see God at
work in your life as you travel the
pages of this heart wrenching and
gripping story.”
Come into the library and find
Angels Walking and Chasing
Sunsets . . . and about 30 more
titles by this prolific and popular
writer.

OUR KITCHEN STILL NEEDS YOU!
Dear church friends, please consider volunteering for one of these jobs
if you are physically able and if you enjoy having dinner at church on
Wednesday evenings. Our volunteers are very faithful, but we still need
new volunteers to give them a well-deserved break and to replace the
folks who are no longer able to help. Here are the jobs that need to be
done, once a quarter or once a month:
SINK & SALAD 2:00-5:30 p.m.—
One person helps prepare salads
and one washes pots.
TABLE SETTING morning or
afternoon—We have a 2-person
team; they take turns setting the
tables.
DEEP SINK 6 p.m.—Two people
to wash and dry pots & pans.
DISHWASHER—Several persons
take turns running the dishwasher
after being trained.
ASST. DISHWASHER—One person
stands at the dish-return window
rinsing dishes and silverware.
DISHES—One person empties the
dishwasher racks, returning dishes
to storage.
SALT/PEPPER PICKUP—One
person removes salt & pepper
from the tables and puts them
away.
SIDE TABLE PICKUP—One
person clears away the salad
fixings, desserts, and beverages
and puts them away.
If you can help, please call Marge
Hever at 693-3723 or email her at
NOTE: The Sunday morning service is
