President’s Message
by FBLA National President José Espinel
Greetings, FBLA members and advisers!
It is my pleasure to welcome our new and returning members to FBLA! We are off to a great start in
what is shaping up to be an unforgettable membership year.
Thanks to your outstanding recruitment efforts, our national membership has increased by 3% over last year at this time,
introducing us to over 4,000 young leaders ready to kickstart their careers in business.
Our National Fall Leadership Conferences in Omaha, Charleston, and Baltimore hosted thousands of members and advisers
and showcased the revamped State Officer Track and the new FBLA Foundations track.
For over 70 years, FBLA has brought business and education together through innovative leadership and service activities,
conferences, and our competitive events program. Let’s take a look at some of the opportunities available as we continue to
CONNECT this year:
• Competitive Events: Choose from over 60 competitive events spanning a diverse array of business disciplines and earn
national recognition! State Leadership Conferences (SLCs) are right around the corner in the spring of 2016, with our
National Leadership Conference (NLC) this summer in Atlanta.
• Business Achievement Awards (BAA): Complete activities relating to FBLA’s various programs to earn the Future, Business,
Leader, and America awards.
• Connect Ten: Keep recruiting throughout the year to earn national recognition for your local chapter! Chapters that
increase membership by 10 or more over the previous year’s number are awarded exclusive ribbons at the NLC in Atlanta.
I invite you to visit the redesigned fbla-pbl.org for more information on these programs and the many others available to
members this year.
Members and advisers, you truly are leading the charge toward FBLA’s success. I encourage you to remain active and
recruiting as we continue to CONNECT in 2016.

Chapter Challenge runs January 1–March 1.
Chapters are required to complete one task for each day of FBLA‑PBL Week, one task
for CTE month, and participate in America Saves to promote awareness of FBLA-PBL
programs. All chapters that complete Action Awareness will receive ribbons at the NLC.
Open to all FBLA chapters, the Chapter Challenge encourages recruitment, retention, and member
involvement. NLC delegates from chapters that complete Super Sweeps, Non‑Stop November, and Action

Community Service Awards
by FBLA Mountain Plains Region Vice President Keaton Erickson
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of
others” – Mahatma Gandhi.
As one of the three words on the FBLA-PBL crest,
service is an important part of our organization.
Each member has a duty to set aside time for
community development.
The Community Service Awards (CSA) program
recognizes members with extraordinary
commitment to community service and consists
of three levels: Community (50 hours), Service
(200 hours), and Achievement (500 hours). Each
level earns recognition and must be completed
before moving to the next level. 500 hours of
service may seem daunting, but the hours are
cumulative, allowing members to add to their
total throughout an FBLA career.
There are many opportunities to incorporate
service into daily life in every community, big or
small! Local food pantries are always searching for
volunteers. Although intimidating, organizing a
food drive at a school or in the community can be
extremely helpful.
At the end of the school year, collecting unused
school supplies may assist some students at the
beginning of the next year. Another possibility
is partnering with a local charity that is already
established and organizing a regular working
schedule.
Service doesn’t have to be individual work.
Working in a group can be a lot of fun, and help
more get accomplished. I encourage you to find a
group of FBLA members to connect with to make
your service experiences memorable, productive,
and enjoyable.
If you are interested in participating in CSA, your
local adviser can register you online. The deadline
for the Community and Service awards is March 1,
and the deadline for the Achievement level is
April 25.
Community and Service award
winners will receive an online
certificate to print and Achievement
award winners will be awarded a pin
at the NLC.

Reasons to Consider a Career in Insurance
With literally thousands of careers out there, it’s no wonder
that most students break into a sweat when asked what they
want to do when they grow up. With so many possibilities
to consider when you do think about your future career,
insurance might not cross your mind.
To help students like you discover the limitless career
opportunities in the risk management and insurance
industry, the educational platform “MyPath: Insurance. It’s
limitless,” powered by The Institutes, was created.
From actuaries and underwriters to agents and brokers,
there are endless positions in the industry that offer young
people exactly what they are looking for in a career: success,
rewards, and fulfillment. And while the majority of people
in this industry either have a family member in insurance or
fell into it by accident, many are pleasantly surprised to find
lifelong success.
Here are five reasons to consider an insurance career:
1. You’ll have a life outside of work. A career in insurance
offers a fulfilling work–life balance. Because most
positions involve the typical 40-hour work week, you can
plan to be productive during your work day and log out
at the end of the day to unwind and enjoy your personal
life—all while being rewarded for your hard work.
2. You’ll be able to help people and make a difference in
their communities. In the insurance industry, you help
people avoid risks and prepare for whatever happens.
From aiding a family struggling to rebuild after a disaster
to bringing peace of mind to a first-time business owner,
insurance is a great way to make a difference in the
world. It also allows individuals and businesses to take
risks they might not otherwise be willing to take, helping
us move forward as a society.
3. There is job availability and stability. Insurance is
often called the backbone of the economy because
all other industries use some form of insurance or risk
management to protect themselves, and it encourages
innovation and progress. In addition to this stability,
the industry is also growing. An estimated 400,000 job
opportunities will exist by 2020.1 This means that the
United States insurance industry needs to fill 70,000
positions per year!
4. You don’t need an insurance-specific major to fit in.
No matter your academic background, you can almost
assuredly find a perfect fit in the insurance industry
that enables you to use the education you already
have to become successful. The majority of positions in
insurance can be done by someone with any degree.
There are also positions available for those with more
specialized degrees.
5. You will never be stuck. With an insurance career, you
can always move around to a different function and try
something new. In fact, many companies encourage
their employees to gain additional experience in other
functions. To broaden your knowledge and qualify
yourself for other positions, our industry offers an array
of professional designations, which most companies will
support.
For more reasons to consider an insurance career, visit
the MyPath website, where you can read about young
professionals in the industry and access free, useful
resources, including:
• Information about the industry and collegiate studies
• Internship opportunities and career options
• Career videos and assessments

FBLA-PBL members and advisers across the country
CONNECTed at this year’s National Fall Leadership
Conferences (NFLCs). More than 5,000 attendees met
in Omaha, Nebraska; Charleston, South Carolina; and
Baltimore, Maryland in November.
Opening keynote speaker Patty Hendrickson
(@PattySpeaks) told attendees “Don’t cheat the world
out of your wonderful.” Hendrickson, national partners,
business professionals, and state leaders helped
members enhance their skills through interactive and
informative workshops. Each city also featured résumé
review for attendees performed by members of the
FBLA-PBL Professional Division.
Attendees at all three conferences had the opportunity
to network with members and exhibitors, meet national
officers, vote on the 75th anniversary membership
theme, and bid in the pilot online auction.
The Omaha NFLC included business tours and an
exclusive track for state officers and closing keynote
speaker Aaron Davis (@acdavisco). Charleston
highlighted the FBLA-Middle Level Program, the state
officer track, and closing keynote speaker Alex Sheen
(@becauseisaidiwould). Baltimore hosted the
PBL Pathways program, state officer track, the pilot FBLA
Foundations track, and closing keynote speaker Johan
Khalilian (@Johanneus).
Each conference ended with the March of Dimes Blue
Jeans for Babies Dance. Attendees donated $5,434.74
to help save babies.
The 2016 NFLCs host cities are:
• Milwaukee, Wisconsin (November 4–5)
• Daytona Beach, Florida (November 11–12)
• Dallas, Texas (November 18–19)

Developing leadership skills is a major reason you chose to join FBLA. Research has
shown that successful leadership is a combination of knowledge (cognitive) and
interpersonal (emotional) skills.
“According to a study conducted by Leadership IQ, 46% of newly‑hired employees will fail within 18 months, while only
19% will achieve unequivocal success. But contrary to popular belief, technical skills are not the primary reason why new
hires fail; instead, poor interpersonal skills dominate the list, flaws which many of their managers admit were overlooked
during the interview process” (Mark Murphy, Leadership IQ, 2005). Interpersonal skills are also known as emotional
intelligence.
Want to know more about your emotional intelligence? Visit our FBLA site: conovercompany.com/fbla.

Recruitment, Recruitment, Recruitment!
by PBL National Secretary Travis London
Zig Ziglar once said, “When you catch a glimpse
of your potential, that’s when passion is born.”
Many people think there’s a big secret to
recruiting new members and they’re right. The
secret is to share your experiences, and your
passion could convince them to join!
Every FBLA-PBL chapter should ensure that
each member is aware of the organization’s
involvement on campus and in the community.
Each student’s first impression is the best that it
can be. Flyers, informational emails, recruitment
booths in high-traffic areas, speaking in front of
classes, and social media usage are possible ways
to help recruit throughout the year. The most
valuable resource you have is current members.
Word of mouth is the most effective recruiting
tool, and your members are your secret weapon.
Getting people to talk about how great your
chapter is, how much fun they’re having, or how
much knowledge they’re gaining is necessary to
create excitement about your chapter.
To recruit new members each year, you have to
seek them out. Don’t expect potential recruits to
come to you—you must go to them.
Many chapters set up informational booths
in high-traffic areas to present students with
flyers about FBLA-PBL. If your school sends out
informational emails or school newspapers, try
to write up a little something about your chapter
and submit it for the school email or an article to
be published in the paper.
When potential members receive your flyers or
information, their first impression can make or
break their decision to become more involved.
They weigh the pros and cons of joining the
organization, so it is really important that your
chapter comes out on top!
When potential recruits actually become
members, it is important that they experience
every opportunity they can within the
organization so that they can enjoy every bit of it!
For more information on FBLA-PBL and
recruitment ideas, check out the online Chapter
Management Handbook at fbla-pbl.org.

Lusk, Wyoming was devastated by a flood
that swept through the town of 1,500 people.
Numerous businesses and homes were
destroyed and the bridge over a major highway

debris and assisted business owners with
cleanup efforts as the water subsided that
morning.
The chapter also donated and served 150 Arby’s

d to all fifth graders at Rock Ledge Intermediate
school about why we
celebrate American Enterprise day, what FBLA is,
how FBLA can be beneficial to them, and what
it’s
like
to plan for and
create their own businesses.
FBLA members worked with the fifth graders to
create a business of their own. The young students
learned what the
differences between products and services are,
and determined what their company was
selling. They created signs and slogans for their
businesses and learned how big
companies use marketing to make sales, and why
it’s important.
Fifth grader Autumn Puylert said “I never knew
