24–27 PBL NLC—Atlanta, Georgia
Spring greetings, PBL members!
It’s hard to believe that the 2015–16 year is coming to an end. Each and every
member of this association has lived up to our theme for the year, CONNECT, and
we have all created connections that will last a lifetime. It has been an extremely
productive year and I have the membership to thank.
I thank my fellow national officers whose service and dedication to this
association were steadfast and never-ending. I thank PBL National Secretary
Travis London for his hard work and for serving as my right hand.
I also thank all the local and state officers, and the advisers. Without your hard
work, this association would not be where it is today. I look forward to seeing
where each of you progress in the future. Congratulations to those graduating
this year, and I invite you to join our Professional Division.
As the National Leadership Conference (NLC) in Atlanta, Georgia rapidly
approaches, I hope to see you all on stage accepting a trophy and cash prizes.
I am excited to meet the candidates for the 2016–17 PBL national officer team.
These dedicated leaders will lead this association next year, so make sure you
choose the most experienced and well-suited candidates for the jobs.
I cannot wait to see you this summer in Atlanta for #NLC16PBL!
Yours Truly,
Karthik Krishnan
2015–16 National President
Congratulations! You’ve made the commitment to become a PBL member and to serve as
an example for the high school and middle level divisions. Want to take your involvement to
the next level? Make FBLA-PBL your “lifelong association” by joining the Professional Division
(PD) after graduation! Through the PD, you can use the skills you’ve developed throughout
your PBL career to educate and inspire the other divisions’ members.
PD members are business professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds. They play many
roles within the organization, including:
• serving as competitive event judges at local & national conferences
• presenting workshops or guest speaking at conferences & chapter meetings
• being a connection to the business world to assist with job & internship opportunities
• providing their expertise to prepare students for life outside of academia
Join the PD after graduation and make FBLA‑PBL your “lifelong
association!”

PBL Business Leader
Dress for Success
by PBL National Secretary Travis London
It’s that time of the year! Conference season is over and there’s just one left—the National Leadership
Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. This is where the best and brightest leaders in the world come together
to compete to determine the best of the best; but in order to compete and attend conference events,
you have to look the part! The purpose of the FBLA‑PBL dress code is to uphold the professional image
of the association and its members and to prepare students for the business world. Appropriate attire is
required for all attendees—advisers, members, and guests—at all general sessions, competitive events,
regional meetings, workshops, and other activities unless otherwise stated in the conference program.
Ladies first, as always. To keep it simple, you can never go wrong with a business suit; this could include
a pantsuit or a suit with a skirt. Either way, you’ll look professional, sleek, and ready to take over the
world. My rule is, “If you’re okay with your grandma seeing it, then you should be fine.” Just a quick
clarification, many women’s two-piece suits are currently designed so that they do not require a blouse.
Therefore, this will be accepted. In addition, sling-back shoes, open-toe shoes, and sleeveless dresses are
accepted.
Gentlemen, yours is quite simple. The best purchase that you will ever make is a nicely-fitted suit. This
suit will make you stand out, boost your confidence, and improve your performance! I always pack
plenty of white dress shirts, just in case you get a little clumsy with food. My next best advice for you
gentlemen: learn how to iron! Traveling across the country without a garment bag and everything
stuffed in your bags will cause plenty of wrinkles. So either learn how to get them out or know someone
who does.
This year I will be wearing the ever‑so‑glamorous
FBLA‑PBL blazer, with the FBLA‑PBL patch, only
available from the FBLA-PBL MarketPlace. To go with
this eloquent blazer, I will be sporting some flat khakis,
also available exclusively on the FBLA‑PBL MarketPlace.
To tie this outfit all together, I will also be wearing a
collared, white, button-up shirt with my FBLA-PBL tie
and pin. Now you might think this would get kind of
boring because of how many times throughout the
year we have to wear it, but one little secret that I will
let you in on is my socks. One major way to personalize
your outfit or uniform so that you stand out are dress
socks. Each day you can see me wearing a different pair
of crazy dress socks.
As a good rule of thumb, if you have to ask someone
“Does this meet the dress code?” consider finding
something else to wear.
If you have any questions about the FBLA-PBL dress
code make sure to ask your adviser.
See you in Atlanta!
National Dress Code
FBLA-PBL members and advisers should develop an awareness of the image one’s appearance projects. The purpose of the dress code
is to uphold the professional image of the association and its members and to prepare students for the business world. Appropriate attire
is required for all attendees—advisers, members, and guests—at all general sessions, competitive events, regional meetings, workshops,
and other activities unless otherwise stated in the conference program. Conference name badges are part of this dress code and must
be worn for all conference functions. For safety reasons, do not wear name badges when touring.
Professional attire acceptable for official FBLA-PBL activities includes:
FEMALES
Business suit with blouse
Business pantsuit
with blouse
Skirt or dress slacks with
blouse or sweater
Business dress
Capris or gauchos with
coordinating jacket/suit,
worn below the knee
Dress shoes
MALES
Business suit with collared
dress shirt and necktie
Sport coat, dress slacks,
collared shirt, and necktie
Dress slacks, collared shirt,
and necktie
Banded collar shirt may be
worn only if sport coat or
business suit is worn
Dress shoes and socks
Inappropriate Attire (for both men and women)
Jewelry in visible body piercing, other than ears; denim or chambray fabric clothing of any kind, overalls, shorts, skorts,
stretch or stirrup pants, exercise or bike shorts; backless, see-through, tight-fitting, spaghetti straps, strapless, extremely short, or low-cut blouses/
tops/dresses/skirts; T-shirts, Lycra™, spandex, midriff tops, tank tops, bathing suits; sandals, athletic shoes, industrial work shoes, hiking boots,
bare feet, or over-the-knee boots; athletic wear, including sneakers; hats or flannel fabric clothing; bolo ties; visible foundation garments.
CLARIFICATION–Many women’s two-piece suits currently are designed so that they do not require a blouse.
Therefore, this will be accepted. In addition, sling-back shoes, open-toe shoes, and sleeveless dresses are accepted.

VANTAGEPOINT
An emerging leader seeks to solve problems
and help create the future of audit.
“I help provide the answers to key
questions asked by readers of financial
statements when evaluating large and
complex investments.”
KPMG’s Corban Bell takes
in the view from Coit Tower
in San Francisco, California.
8
PBL Business Leader
W
hat’s it like to work with private equity firms
and hedge funds to guide their investments?
“I really enjoy the problem-solving aspects,”
explains Corban Bell, associate, Audit, at KPMG in San
Francisco. KPMG’s Alternative Investments (AI) Practice
is a strategic initiative that focuses on serving private
equity, venture capital, employee benefit plans and real
estate companies. Corban’s goal is to “help provide
the answers to key questions asked by readers of
financial statements when evaluating large and complex
investments.” KPMG believes this approach is the
future of audit — and by building his career, Corban
is helping to create that future.
After two years with KPMG, his professional success
has been swift, but not sudden — Corban has been
curating his career since college. Before he graduated
from Grambling State University in 2013, Corban Bell
had a long list of accomplishments. In addition to
completing three corporate management internships at
KPMG, he led a winning team of interns in the National
Intern Community Service challenge, was active in
the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA)
and successfully campaigned for his student body to
fund a first-of-its-kind recycling project that raised more
than $50,000 over three years and won the 2012-2013
Toyota Green Initiative.
“Starting my first internship at KPMG with very
little accounting experience was intimidating, but I
was determined to learn,” Corban recalls. That year,
Corban participated in the KPMG National Case Study
Competition at the NABA Convention. He’s since
served on numerous NABA panel discussions and
chapter initiatives.
During his third internship, Corban’s interest in AI,
passion for complex financial transactions, and advice
from a KPMG senior manager working with a large
private equity client, led Bell to explore the practice.
Since joining KPMG full time, Corban has taken part in
several presentations and competitions — including
the Howard University School of Business Center for
Accounting Education’s 2014 We’re About Success
Program and the firm’s Inclusion Leadership Forum.
Bell’s early achievements have a lot to do with his
role models: retired KPMG partner Frank K. Ross and
prominent lawyer and entrepreneur Reginald Lewis.
Ross, former managing partner of KPMG in Washington,
D.C., is a co-founder of NABA. Lewis — the first
African-American to broker a billion-dollar buyout – lived
his life by his grandfather’s advice to “know your job
and do it well.”
“I want to lay my head on my
pillow at night feeling proud of the
actions I took and the decisions
I made that day.”
Corban’s next challenges include becoming a senior
associate and honing his project management skills.
He’s also interested in an international rotation, or
experience in KPMG’s new Strategy Practice, and
“might start those conversations” soon. Away from the
office, he’ll continue his mountain climbing avocation
with an ascent of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park.
Describing himself as a “quiet leader”, Corban tries to
build his relationships on respect and decency. “I want
to lay my head on my pillow at night feeling proud of the
actions I took and the decisions I made that day.” 1
How today’s auditors become
tomorrow’s leaders
Building a career in KPMG’s Audit practice means
exposure to a broad variety of foundational skills and
strategic capabilities — from accounting to forensic to
information risk management. KPMG has reinvented its
approach to audit training to offer many online learning
resources and national training programs that enable KPMG
professionals to participate, for example, in “virtual” team
management scenarios and gain multi-industry expertise
via interactive discussions on business trends and issues.
KPMG’s differentiated audit training is providing increased
opportunities for career specialization, new certification
attainment and confidence building.

Region Roundup
WESTERN REGION
Western Region Vice President Mikayla Khramov
pblwrvp@fbla.org
The Western Region has been receiving more COP
requests this semester than last.
I also have individual members reaching out
for advice in starting a new chapter as well as
running for national office.
As the current state president for Arizona, I know
that our membership has increased and our
CMAP participation has broken records, thanks to
our VP of Programs Mark Creech.
All in all, I am proud of the progress of the
Western Region, and I feel we will grow
significantly within the next year.
MOUNTAIN PLAINS REGION
Mountain Plains Region Vice President Kennedy Reynolds
pblmpvp@fbla.org
With #NLC16PBL just a few months away, the states in the
Mountain Plains Region are hard at work preparing for their
annual State Leadership Conferences (SLCs).
I attended the Kansas SLC where Lizzie Caron was elected Kansas
state president and many members qualified to compete in
Atlanta this summer.
The Oklahoma FBLA-PBL state officer team is preparing for the
2nd annual March of Dimes Purple Out Social at their SLC, where
members will have the opportunity to pie a state officer or state
staff member in the face with all proceeds going to the March of
Dimes.
Congratulations to Texas A&M University on being ranked in the
PBL Big Ten Chapters with 122 members. Don’t forget that April
15 is the national membership deadline, so it’s not too late for
last-minute recruitment!
I wish you luck in the last few weeks of the spring semester. I
encourage you to compete hard, campaign well, and earn your
way to #NLC16PBL in Atlanta. I look forward to CONNECTing with
each of you and wish you luck with your competitions, finals, and
the rest of your semester.

EASTERN REGION
The spring semester has definitely been a busy one for the states in
the eastern region! Each state was hard at work in making that last
membership push in order to surpass last year’s membership numbers.
Members have been very involved in completing the different levels
of CMAP and were excited by the opportunity to receive recognition
for this within their states. The spring has also been full of competition
preparation since state leadership conferences are right around the corner.
I am so excited to be able to CONNECT with each and every one of you at
#NLC16PBL! NORTH CENTRAL REGION
North Central Region Vice President Kimberly Clark
pblncvp@fbla.org
Summer is nearing and the membership year is drawing to a close.
Just because you will no longer be meeting with your chapter does
not mean that you will not be able to live the FBLA-PBL lifestyle.
Summer is a perfect time to participate in community service and
to work on your CMAP activities! Be sure to check out the National
Leadership Conference and all that it has to offer!! Let’s end this
year with a bang and CONNECT with as many others as we can—
because everybody has their own amazing story. Good luck with
finals and all that the end of the term will bring.
SOUTHERN REGION
Southern Region Vice President Candace Grace
pblsrvp@fbla.org
Membership is continuing to grow
across the southern region, but we still
have some ground to cover to meet
our membership mark. Conference
season is in the air and this is a perfect
time to get in those final member
recruits before your state conference.
If we work together, we can make
this another successful year for the
southern region. Thank you for all your
efforts. If I can be of assistance please
contact me at pblsrvp@fbla.org.
