Tragedy Hits Woodhaven Stamping
Local 387 VOL. 43 — NO. 4 AUG.-SEPT., 2008 NEWS AND PRESS INL Tragedy Hits Woodhaven Stamping By JOHN MOORE Local 387 President G reetings to the membership of Local 387. I would like to start this report on a personal note. I would like to express my sadness on losing not only a member, but a brother, and a good man that always had a smile on his face and never had a bad thing to say about anyone. Our Brother Fred Todd will be missed. And to Crystal, his wife, your family is in my thoughts and prayers in this most difficult time. We have already done a gate collection but if we missed you please drop off your donation at the local. This is the time we come together as a family and take care of our own, so give generously. Special Salute My thanks and sympathy goes out to all the employees including skilled trades and production that were on scene and directly affected by the horrible tragedy that Wednesday morning. Special thanks to the ERT and medical team which kept their emotions in check and performed their duties in a most professional manner under extreme circumstances. John Moore Cleaners As you may have noticed by now we have new cleaners in the Stamping Plant. The new cleaners are ABM janitorial service. We have completed the card check for these employees and I am proud to announce that they are now the newest members of the UAW Local 387 family. I will keep you posted on their contract talks. Fun Day The fun day will take place in lieu of the August Membership meeting on August 24th. Any and all suggestions to make this more successful than last year will be appreciated. If you would like to volunteer to work the day please contact the Local and we will forward your name and phone number to the fun day committee. Fun day wrist bands are now available at the Local or see Nehemiah Hamm on the mezzanine level committee room. Mathews Ford generously donated a 4 day 3 night trip to Las Vegas which includes air and hotel. We will be selling tickets for $2.00 each so if you are interested please see one of the fun day committee members or tickets are available at the Local. Labor Day Labor day is Monday September 1, 2008. The local will be participating in the Labor Day parade. I would personally like to invite all members to bring their friends and families to join us in a sign of solidarity in these trying times for our industry and members. Please contact the Local for further details. T-shirts for sale To support the Retiree Watch fund the Local now has three different style Local 387 T-shirts to choose from. Standing Committees We have openings for members to become active on standing committees. The only criteria to become a (Continued on Page 8) An Update From Your Local 387 Bargaining Committee Financial Secretary Mark Petrlich Attention: New Work and Securing Our Future As reported by the company in the media, several new European models will be brought to the United States. A few of those are scheduled to be made in Michigan and we are aggressively pursuing press and assembly work to offset the loss of truck volume. Condolences to the Todd Family The Bargaining committee and the entire Union structure would like to offer our condolences and blessings to the Todd family. We would like to thank every member for donating to help the Todd family. Even with layoffs and less members working in the plant we generously donated $1,840 to the family. We are proud at a time of need, the membership worked together to help the family and our leadership provide the necessary assistance. Sister Crystal Todd and the rest4 of the family will always be in our prayers. As Always SOLIDARITY FOREVER! THE LOCAL IS CURRENTLY ACCEPTING BIDS ON SNOW REMOVAL AND LAWN CARE SERVICE. WE ARE ACCEPTING TWO OR MORE YEARS BIDS. ALL BIDS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY SEPTEMBER 26, 2008. ANY QUESTIONS CONTACT MARK PETRLICH AT 782-2771 UAW-made vehicles lead in rankings No one needs to tell UAW members at General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC that the state of the industry and the national economy present difficult challenges. But even in these exceptionally hard business conditions, UAW members rise to the occasion. Recent developments at each automaker illustrate how our members fight through the bad news and work hard to produce exceptional vehicles for the public. In the J.D. Power and Associates' recently released Initial Quality Survey (IQS), Ford improved at a rate faster than the industry average, beating its 2007 score by eight points. It placed two UAW-built vehicles, the Lincoln Navigator and Ford E-Series van, as highest ranked and followed it with the Ford Ranger and Mercury Sable taking second-place awards. And in J.D. Power's Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study, Ford improved by 12 points, driven by the Ford Focus, which improved by a whopping 88 points, the single most improved vehicle in that study. The Mercury brand notched a 12-point improvement. "UAW members have been building top-quality cars and trucks for years," said UAW President Ron Gettelfinger. "We can be proud that our members are the most productive and skilled workers in the manufacturing world." One of our truly inspirational brothers had a tragic accident in the plant on Wednesday, July 23rd. Brother Fred Todd will always be remembered for his endless smile and compassion for his fellow union brothers and sisters. He always had time to comfort his fellow worker when they needed a listening ear. Fred was a very religious man and he could calm the hearts of people in need. Fred enjoyed the company of his fellow workers whether it was on the job, playing checkers, or doing yard work at home. He was the kind of man that everyone could depend on no matter what time of day or night. If you needed him, he was there. His untimely accident will leave emptiness for not only his wife, children, grandchildren, parents, aunts and uncles but for his Union family as well. We will miss Brother Todd, but his legacy will remain at WSP and Local 387 forever. Below you will see some photos that were taken of Fred in the last few years and that appeared in the Woodhaven Stamping Plant calendars. As you can see, there are many of them because he always had such a beautiful smile.
