FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Dear Parishioners,
The season of Advent is a
season of Hope. It is during this
time we stand erect to face the
coming of the Lord. It is not a time
of fear; it is not a time to hide. For
the believer, it is the time to face
the truth that God has chosen to
be with us. He has chosen us to be
one of us in Jesus; he has chosen us to walk with us unto
His Kingdom. In the movie, Shawshank Redemption, Red
say, “Hope is a dangerous thing.” In the Hunger Games,
President Snow says, “A little hope is okay, too much hope
is dangerous.” Why do these characters fear hope? The
answer lies in the fact that hope invites people to change
and often to change for the better. Hope changes the
status quo. Hope invites to look at our ways and to see
where we can be better. It is best to start with ourselves
and then share this hope with family, friends and then the
stranger. On December 8 we will begin the Holy Year of
Mercy. We will look for ways in which we will become
better people, where we will imitate the mercy of God in
our lives. On weekdays, throughout the Holy Year, we will
celebrate the sacrament of confession, for a half hour,
after the 6:30 AM and 9:00 AM daily Masses. This will
afford us time to experience the mercy of God and the
grace to change our lives. We will lift up our heads and
look for the coming of the Lord.
God’s Peace,
Fr. Mike
LAUREL’S WINTER SHELTER PROGRAM 2015
“…provide shelter to the poor homeless and feed them.”~ Isa 58:7
Laurel Winter Shelter Program is a temporary shelter program
modeled after the Safe Haven program of Hyattsville, MD that
offers overnight accommodations for men and women at
locations throughout the local community of Laurel, Maryland.
The shelter is provided by various faith organizations on a
weekly rotational basis from December to March. Those who
seek shelter are referred to as “guests.” St. Mary of the Mills
Church provides a place to sleep and food for the homeless men
and women each year during the Christmas Holidays. This year
St. Mary of the Mills will be hosting the shelter December 20th
to December 27th. The shelter opens nightly at 6:30pm and the
guests leave the following morning at 7:30am. The Ladies of
Charity provide the meals for most of the evenings. This includes
breakfast, brown bag lunches, dinner, dessert and drinks. On the
last morning the Knights of Columbus provide a hot breakfast.
Volunteers are needed to help with various tasks throughout the
week including serving as overnight chaperones. The overnight
shelter also offers opportunities for the youth of the community
to gain insight and perspectives into the issues of homelessness
as well as opportunities for community service hours. There will
be a sign up board in the vestibule of the church beginning this
weekend. Please take a look and sign up where you can help. For
more information, contact Marsha Raymond at the parish office.

YOU’RE INVITED TO
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
Q: Why is it important for kids to engage in
Eucharistic adoration?
A: Father Thomas: Jesus said, "Let the
children come to me"; I think we had better
obey and bring him the children. Pope John
Paul II said back in 1996: "I urge priests,
religious and lay people to continue and
redouble their efforts to teach the younger generations the meaning
and value of Eucharistic adoration and devotion." Before young
children have received their first holy Communion, Eucharistic
adoration is a great way to help them receive Jesus in their heart
through spiritual communion. And afterward, it helps increase in
them a desire for more frequent Communion. Hopefully during the
teen years these same children will find in Jesus a best friend,
strength and light. They also may be more disposed to hear and
follow their vocation in life.
~ Taken from Bringing Children to
Christ in Eucharistic Adoration By: Father Antoine Thomas
What a great thought. Raise your children to love Jesus! Adoration
is held every Tuesday here at St. Mary’s immediately following the
9:00am Mass and continues throughout the day ending with
Benediction at 6:30pm with a Novena to our Blessed Mother taking
place at 6:30pm. Please come, bring your children, and pray!
Please do not use St. Mary’s School parking lot between 2:003:30pm. Please park in front of the church or down the street.

ELIZABETH MINISTRY The days after the birth of a
new baby are both joyful and hectic. One of the greatest
gifts you can give the parish’s new parents is a hot meal.
Sign up for our Elizabeth Ministry! The commitment isn’t
much, just as long as it takes to prepare and deliver a
meal. Put your grilling, baking, and sautéing skills to work
to help make the early days of parenting a little easier for
new parents. Contact Laura Doscher at laura@dca.net.

A NOTE FROM MRS. FERNANDEZ We had a great turn
out for our annual Parent/Teacher Conferences. It shows
how committed all our parents are to their student’s
education. Thank you for being partners in education! I
also wanted to thank Mrs. Mima and the 4th grade parents
for the snacks on Friday and Mrs. Ferus and the 1st grade
parents for the lunch on Monday. It was an honor to
celebrate all the accomplishments of our student body at
our First Quarter Prayer Service and Awards Ceremony.
Our students continue to impress me every day. For the
