THE DREAM LIVES ON
For more than 24 years, Herbalife has been
affecting people around the world. It’s incredible to
think about the success stories we have seen and
heard because of the products and the business
opportunity. Millions of lives have been changed
because one man–Mark Hughes–had a dream.
Few of us are aware of the moment that destiny
sets a series of events into motion. For Mark,
there was no question. Even at the age of 18,
Mark was concerned about people who damaged
their bodies through unhealthy dieting practices.
As a result, he committed himself to finding a
safe and effective way for people to lose weight
and improve their health, and at the same time
offering a financial opportunity to those who
wanted a better life.
Mark learned everything he could about nutrition,
herbs, dieting and wellness. And he mastered the
business of multilevel marketing. As a result, he
developed the best weight-loss and wellness
2
products, as well as the best marketing plan in
the industry. His marketing tools were simple–the
product, the marketing plan and the “Lose
Weight Now, Ask Me How®” button. Any
obstacles Mark faced in the early days only
made him work harder because he saw a future
no one else even imagined.
Mark’s limitless imagination, boundless energy
and enthusiasm, and his unwavering belief in
the products and the opportunity, were what
captured the spirit of everyone who wanted to
be a part of Herbalife. Mark may have had the
dream, but it was his Distributors that helped
him turn his business into a multibillion-dollar
international company.
It is our responsibility to carry on what Mark
started. Distributor by Distributor and customer
by customer, we can take this dream beyond even
what Mark could have ever imagined.

Shape
The Importance of
By David Heber, M.D., Ph.D.
Chairman of Herbalife’s Scientific and
Medical Advisory Boards
What is your shape? You may think you know when you look in the mirror, or you may be too
busy trying to cover up unshapely areas to really see yourself as you are. Do you know how
much fat you’re carrying, compared to how much muscle? Do you know where you tend to
gain weight–upper body, lower body or around the middle? Until you know the answers to
these questions, you are not ready to make your personal plan for losing weight and keeping
it off. Understanding your body is the first step to reaching your best personal shape.
As someone who teaches both doctors and the
public about obesity, I believe weight loss has been
overemphasized and body shape underemphasized.
You have probably read about the Body-Mass Index
(BMI), which is a weight-to-height ratio. If your BMI is
greater than 25, you are considered overweight, and
if it is greater than 30 you are obese. This ratio has
been a powerful way for scientists to document the
obesity epidemic in this country and its effects on
health and disease. However, when it comes to you
as an individual, it can be misleading. A football player
can be considered overweight on the BMI scale, but
if the extra weight being carried is muscle, he is not
4
really fat. A thin woman can have a normal BMI, yet
still be over-fat. So shape counts.
Shape also helps determine goals. Women are
very conscious of their shape and dress size, and for
many women changing their shape is more important
than just losing weight. Men are often unaware of their
excess weight around the middle, and simply buy
larger pants or tighten their belt below their stomach.
Men may care less about a shapely appearance, but
shape has many health consequences and improved
health is a goal for many men. Losing weight around
the middle can help reduce cholesterol levels, blood
pressure and blood-sugar levels.

Upper Body Fat
Lower Body Fat
Proportional Body Fat
Three body types
Shapes are personal and go beyond the usual apple
and pear. Women can have three typical body
shapes–upper body fat, lower body fat and both upper
and lower body fat. Men usually only get upper body
fat. The upper body stores fat in times of stress and
some people can lose and gain weight rapidly in the
upper body. The lower body fat in women responds to
female hormones
such as estrogen

upper body fat
tend to have more
muscle than
women with lower
body fat and will
need more protein
in their diet to
help control their
hunger.
Losing weight is harder if you have lower body fat
rather than upper body fat, but the medical benefits of
losing your upper body fat are greater. The upper body
fat around the intestines, which is seen on the outside
as an increase in waist size and on the inside with
special x-rays called CT scans, is very specialized in
function. This fat tissue sends fatty acids to the liver
and causes changes in your insulin levels that affect
how much fat you store versus how much fat you
burn. When you have too much of this fat in the body,
it can also cause inflammation in many tissues,
including the heart. Losing weight around your neck,
face, chest and waist usually goes along with losing fat
on the inside as well. So as you look better, you are
also improving your health tremendously.
Discovering your shape
Finally, there are two more body shapes to consider:
The shape you can change and the shape you can’t
change. It is important to know the difference and
work on the shape you can change, while adjusting
your wardrobe and attitudes to the shape you cannot
change. People come in all different shapes and sizes.
Due to low metabolism, many women with lower
body fat can’t lose weight just by cutting calories.
These lower body-fat cells are resistant to both
exercise and diet. Only a personalized program can
help make sure you get enough protein to control
cravings and build or maintain lean muscle.

Margaret
Before: size 18
After: size 7
Margaret & Timothy Hall
Timothy
Before: 195 pounds
After: 150 pounds
At 197 and 195 pounds, respectively, Margaret and
Timothy Hall were “couch-potato partners,” living
inactive lifestyles and eating unhealthy foods.
Although Margaret had tried to lose weight on
several different diets, she never achieved the results
she wanted. And Timothy wasn’t really trying.
But after Margaret tried Herbalife’s Green
Weight-Management
Program,
everything
changed–for both of them. Having kept off the
excess weight for over two years, Margaret and
Timothy are living examples of how to stay slim over
the long haul.*
What was the turning point that led you to try
Herbalife’s products?
MH: When T imothy and I realized we were
becoming too tired to enjoy our lives.
TH: I was skeptical at first. It wasn’t until I saw
Margaret losing weight and having so much more
energy that I tried Herbalife myself.
What changed with Herbalife?
MH: After two days on the program I felt better. I
had so much energy, I didn’t even mind cleaning
the house after work. Over time, I lost
30 pounds on the Green Program. Then I
switched to the Gold Program and lost more
pounds. I’ve also gone from a dress size 18
to a loose 7.
TH: And I lost 45 pounds and dropped four
inches from my waist.
Why do you think Herbalife worked where
other weight-loss programs didn’t?
TH: For me, Herbalife isn’t a diet. It’s more a
lifestyle. And with my night work schedule, Herbalife
is perfect because I can use it on the go, and I
know it will sustain me.
What’s different in your lives today because of
Herbalife?
TH: We’ve replaced “couch time” with healthier,
more active pastimes, like walking and hiking.
MH: Thanks to Herbalife, we’re living life to the
fullest every day!

Scientific Breakthrough
Scientific technique improves
botanicals
Furthering our unwavering commitment
to science, Herbalife recently donated a
groundbreaking scientific technique to
the Mark Hughes Cellular & Molecular
Nutrition Laboratory at UCLA to aid
in the Lab’s academic research of
botanical products and nutrition.
Established with a generous donation
from Herbalife, the Mark Hughes Lab
is part of UCLA’s Center for Human
Nutrition, founded by David Heber, MD,
Commitment to Science
As part of our ongoing effort
to support scientific research,
Herbalife was a sponsor of a
session on Metabolic Syndrome
at the Second Annual Integrative
Medicine Symposium at UCLA,
February 20-21.

this knowledge to

exciting step forward
in our understanding of the properties and benefits of
botanicals,” says Dr. Thompson.
MDP was developed at Ancile Pharmaceuticals
under the guidance of then-CEO Janice Thompson,
PhD, now Herbalife’s Senior Vice President of
Scientific Affairs. Herbalife has acquired the exclusive
license to MDP and is allowing its use for research
purposes by the Mark Hughes Lab.
Unveiling breakthrough to scientific community
The Mark Hughes Lab unveiled MDP in November
2003 at the Annual Symposium of Complementary
Health Care in London, where it was heralded as a
promising new technique for improving botanicals.
Mary Hardy, MD, Associate Director of the UCLA
Center for Clinical Nutrition, delivered a paper
on the subject, which she co-authored with Dr.
Thompson. At the symposium, Dr. Thompson cochaired the Herbalife-sponsored Herbal Medicine
Session with Navindra Seeram, PhD, Director of the
Mark Hughes Lab.
Sharing scientific knowledge with the world
Using the MDP technology they’ve received from
Herbalife, the experts at the Mark Hughes Lab are
hard at work developing a deeper understanding
of the properties of botanicals. This is yet another
example of our commitment to help make the world
healthier through better nutrition.

How to eat for good health
ColorCoding
Most people are aware of the fact that they’re
supposed to include fruits and vegetables in their diet.
But did you know that in addition to eating the five to
nine daily servings of fruits and vegetables the National
Cancer Institute recommends, you need to add a
variety of color to your diet to achieve optimal health?
That’s right. There are actually seven different
categories of fruits and vegetables that comprise
the seven key colors, each with their own unique
contribution to individual health. To achieve optimal
health, your daily servings of fruits and vegetables
should ideally be spread across the seven different
categories. That way, you’ll take in some of each
beneficial phytonutrient each day.
The importance of achieving a colorful diet
“Adding different colors to your diet is important
because the different plant chemicals they represent
have different effects on the body,” according to Dr.
David Heber, Chairman of Herbalife’s Scientific
Advisory Board and Medical Advisory Board.
The following list provides examples of what foods
you’ll find in each color category so that you can be sure
you’re getting a wide variety of colorful foods in your diet.
7 Colors
Fruits & Vegetables
Red
Tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon
Red-Purple

Dwayne Norris was attending college–and working long

an ad for the Herbalife business opportunity. Dwayne also
had a background in international cycling and remembers, “I
was eager to try the nutritional products. I’m so glad I did! I

Herbalife business takes off
Dwayne started slowly, working just an hour a day. And

Segovia saw the amazing potential right away. “When I saw how successful the Internet campaign we
created was, I started taking the Herbalife products myself,” Segovia recalls, “and I became energized and more productive!”
Segovia began his own Herbalife business–and earned just over $1,800 in his first three weeks. Today, almost two years in the
business, he’s averaging $5,000 a month and has built a team of Distributors. His advice for up-and-coming Herbalife Distributors
is simple: “Above all else, you must be consistent in your efforts. Whatever you’re doing, do it consistently for at least 90 days.”
