Session Descriptions Room Assignments BREAKOUT SESSION II 11:15—12:30 pm THE HR PROFESSIONAL AS CHANGE LEADER: UNDERSTANDING, ACTING, ANCHORING [MTG ROOM D/E] [STRATEGIC/BUSINESS CREDIT] Dr. John Austin | Three Translation Leadership Rapid and regular organizational change is the new normal. Managing change is a core HR skill needed across the globe. HR professionals are being asked to help develop change, but also expected to demonstrate personal acumen in change management. Provides skills for HR as well as offering guidance for how to develop the change capabilities of the organization's management team. Participants will consider the key practical actions that can keep specific change initiatives moving and to make the organization more resilient in the face of change. 1) The participant will be able to pinpoint gaps in current change management capability using the understand, act, anchor framework. 2) The participant will experiment with techniques for triggering mindset shifts and Eureka! moments. 3) The participant will be able to assess a change initiative using the 12 HR guidelines for practice outlined in the 2015 SHRM Foundation Guidelines for Practice Report. THE RISING VALUE OF WOMEN IN LEADERSHIP [MEETING ROOM A/B] Brenda Vester, Vice President of Business Development |Lee Hecht Harrison Pittsburgh Understand the value women serve in a leadership capacity. Numbers based evidence as well as other indicators which include the VUCA (volatile, uncertain complex and ambiguous) which demands a new style of leadership only women can bring. 1) The positive trends around women in leadership. 2) An understanding of Leadership Competencies and your Authentic Style; and 3) How to change the conversation about women in leadership within our own workplace. BREAKOUT SESSION III 1:15— 2:30 pm BYOH – BRING YOUR OWN HANDBOOK [MEETING ROOM A/B] Marla Presley & Bethany Wagner Attorneys at Law Jackson Lewis | Pittsburgh Office Discussion of best practices. Review of handbook for compliance with labor and employment laws, regulations, and recent agency directives. 1) Policies that may violate the National Labor Relations Act, even if your company is union-free. 2) Changes to be made following the amendment to the Family and Medical Leave Act. 3) Potential pitfalls related to social media policies. 4) The interplay between various leave laws. You will leave the session knowing which policies you should have in place to guide day-to-day employee relations, and which policies should be revised or revamped. Session Descriptions Room Assignments BREAKOUT SESSION III [Continued from Previous Page] 1:15— 2:30 pm MANAGING ABRASIVE LEADERS: HOW TO INTERVENE WITH LEADERS WHO RUB EMPLOYEES THE WRONG WAY [MEETING ROOM D/E] Bonnie Artman Fox, MS, LMFT, CADC | A Conscious Choice, LLC Learn about mentoring/coaching senior staff to change abrasive behavior to work better with all em- ployees; and avoid/prevent potentially risky and dangerous employee behavior. 1) Identify the psychological forces behind abrasive behavior. 2) Understand how to intervene calmly and confidently with counterattack from the abrasive leader. 3) Establish a plan to intervene with abrasive leaders to develop interpersonal competence. CLOSING GENERAL SESSION [BALLROOM] 2:45 — 4:00 pm STRATEGIC THINKING: DEVELOPING YOUR LEADERS AND IMPROVING YOUR STRATEGIC DECISIONS [Strategic/Business credit] Dr. John Austin | Three Translation Leadership Show how strategic leadership is dually important in both delivering HR services effectively and in developing adaptive leaders who enable business to thrive amidst constant uncertainty. Strategic leadership is an integral element for success. ID the key barriers to strategic thinking and how to overcome these challenges. Keeping strategic initiatives moving and to help make organizations more resilient in the face of strategic shift. 1) The participant will be able to identify positive strategic thinking behaviors within their organization. 2) The participant will learn to diagnose the key cognitive bias cycle that can limit the strategic thinking capability of a leader. 3) The participant will learn the understand, act, sustain simple rule for quickly diagnosing why strategic initiatives are stalling. A session on strategic and critical thinking straight from the SHRM Annual Conference and SHRM Volunteer Leaders Conference. This talk is tied to Dr. Austin’s newest book (published Sept. 2015), Unquestioned Brilliance: Navigating a Fundamental Leadership Trap. Speaker Bios Jim Ice Jim Ice has been a trusted advisor to business leaders across industries for over 30 years. As a high-energy, thought leader he delivers results through the integration of business insight and deep talent management subject matter expertise. He has held executive level talent management positions at Westinghouse, Alcoa, and Respironics/Philips. In 2012, Jim launched his consulting/training business. He has consulted on leadership and change management topics to dozens of global companies across a wide range of industries. Jim holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Speech Communications from WVU, a MS in Organizational Development/Communications from Perdue University and has completed his doctoral coursework (ABD) in Adult Instruction and Learning at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. John Austin Dr. John Austin works at the intersec- tion of research and practice as the President of Three Translation Leadership. Prior to that, Dr. Austin was a Principal at Decision Strategies International and a management professor at Penn State University and The University of Washington. He continues to teach executives for The Wharton School, Georgetown University, and The University of North Carolina. John has worked with numerous Global Fortune 500 companies as an executive development resource and is a frequent speaker at association conferences. Dr. Austin has a B.A. in economics from The Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. in management from Boston College. He is a thought leader in the areas of team leadership, organizational change implementation, and strategic decision-making. Brenda Vester Brenda Vester is VP of Business Development for Lee Hecht Harrison’s Pittsburgh office. Brenda has over 20 years of experience in the Human Capital industry, including coaching, training, relationship management, career management & transition. She works with organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, to design and integrate leadership and coaching programs, career management initiatives, out placement planning and project execution. As a speaker, Brenda has developed and delivered topics such as, “Capture the Power of the 21st Century Woman”, and “Communicating across Generations.” Brenda has also taught Business Communications in the Katz School at the University of Pittsburgh. Brenda has a BS in Business Administration and is PHR certified. Brenda is the author of the books Capture Your Power, 2009, and RESET; Your Career Starts in Your Mind, 2015. Speaker Bios Marla Presley Marla Presley is a shareholder in the Pittsburgh office of Jackson Lewis P.C. Ms. Presley’s practice is focused exclusively on the representation of employers in employment related litigation before administrative agencies and courts on both the state and federal levels. Ms. Presley dedicates a significant portion of her practice to proactively counseling employers with respect to litigation prevention and overall compliance with state, federal, and administrative laws and regulations. These include reviewing and revising employee manuals and policies, reviewing and counseling management regarding termination decisions (including large scale layoffs), and performing complex human resource audits. In addition, she is experienced in drafting various employment agreements including non-competes and severance agreements. Ms. Presley received her B.A. from the University of Mount Union and her J.D. from Duquesne University School of Law where she was a member of the Louis L. Manderino Honor Society and the recipient of the Lynette Norton Award for Excellence in trial advocacy. She is licensed in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, and is a frequent lecturer on various legal issues, including employment law updates and employer policies and procedures. Bethany Wagner Bethany Wagner is an associate in the Pittsburgh office of Jackson Lewis P.C. Ms. Wagner practices in the areas of employment and Title IX and NCAA compliance. In her employment practice, Ms. Wagner focuses on preventative human resource policy development, training, and advice and counseling. She also develops and reviews policy and handbooks, particularly for multi-state issues and compliance. In addition, Ms. Wagner represents employers in employment-related litigation before administrative agencies and courts on the federal and state levels. Originally from Wheeling, West Virginia, Ms. Wagner attended Wheeling Central Catholic High School before receiving her B.S. in Sport Management, summa cum laude, from West Virginia University and her J.D. from the West Virginia University College of Law Cynthia Horton Cynthia Horton is a Wage Hour Compliance Investigator for the US Department of Labor. As a native Puerto Rican she speaks fluent Spanish in addition to English which allows her to better perform her job duties and to reach a larger group of workers. She started her career in the U.S. Navy after which she earned her Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management with special emphasis on Training and Development from the University of Maryland. Prior to her employment with DOL she held both private and public sector employment within the field garnering the knowledge and experience required to obtain compliance in accordance with Wage and Hour laws throughout the nation. Cynthia currently resides in Greensburg, PA with her husband and two daughters. She is an active member in her church and is a leader for the Hispanic Community therein. She enjoys spending time with her family, is an avid animal lover and loves all aspects of the outdoors. Speaker Bios Bonnie Artman-Fox Bonnie Artman-Fox started her career as an RN on an oncology unit. She was always drawn to the bedside talking to her patients about how they were coping with their diagnosis. Eventually she obtained a master’s degree in Psychiatric Nursing and ultimately became a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT). For many years as a LMFT, Bonnie worked with high profile Professionals who were stressed and working at extremely fast speeds. Many times their professional and personal lives had exploded around them due to multiple demands and distractions. Seeing the destruction of careers and families, Bonnie developed strategies, programs and workshops concentrating on self-awareness and stress reduction to help these same professionals turn their lives around. Now Bonnie applies her skills to workplace relationships which often resemble a family.
