This week is Reconciliation Week.
All classes have been exploring
what reconciliation is and what it
means to them. The students have
written reflections on coloured
pieces of paper and added them
to two large paper flags, the
Aboriginal flag and the Torres
Strait Islander flag. The preschool
students have made handprints in
the colours of the flags as a
border. Come in and have a look
on the wall opposite the ABC Cafe.
It looks spectacular.
It has been a very busy and
exciting couple of weeks at
Charnwood-Dunlop School. This
week, all the teachers have had
some time off class to finalise
assessments and write reports
so that they can be ready for
week 9. We are trialling a system
of interviews and reports in week
9 where families will receive their
child’s report at the interview. All
other reports will be sent out in
week 10.
Last week we held a very
successful school Athletics
Carnival. The weather was very
kind to us in the end with a
beautiful sunny day despite some
rain the day before. Thank you to
all our wonderful parents and
helpers for providing the
students and teachers with a hot
lunch and for your help with
various sports events.
Last Friday we had a small
number of students represent
our school at the Belconnen
Cross Country event.
money for the Asthma Foundation.
I can’t wait to bring my gold coin
donation and come to school in
my PJs!
This week, on Monday our Year 6
students went to the GRIP
leadership conference with Miss
Stamp. They reported it was a
very worthwhile conference and
has added to their leadership
competencies. Thank you to the P
& C who funded this event! On
Tuesday the Japanese Tyke-Oh
drumming workshop and
performance was highly engaging.
Then on Wednesday we had
poetry workshops with Sara and
Michael who are travelling the
world to inspire us all to write
poetry. The 3/4 students learned
how to write ‘Feeling Poems’
using a noun- verb pattern and
the Yr 5/6 students learned how
to write ‘Personification Poems.’
In a one hour workshop we were
all very impressed with the
poems written by the students.
We hope to compile them in to an
anthology!
Wow so much is happening and
there is so much talent in our
school!
Also on Wednesday we had
students out playing in the soccer
carnival and the band were
performing in a combined band
practice at Latham. Today we
have students out playing in the
Sullivan Shield competition! On
Friday our School Parliament has
organised a PJ day to raise
We would also like to remind
families that we will be holding a
repeat of the Positive Behaviour
Support workshop we held . We
are trying an early morning time
slot in the hope that we can catch
more people. A letter went home
this week letting everyone know
that the session will be on
Thursday 4th June at 8.309.30am in the morning in the
library. We would love as many of
you to come along and find out
how we are improving behaviour
management and safety at our
school. We also value your input
and feedback. We are all working
together to make our school an
even better place to be!
Don’t forget school photo day on
next Wednesday 3th June. It would
be appreciated if all students
were in school uniform on this
day.

Ideas for learning at
home to support
your child in English!
Homework Help
Read to or with
your child every
day. Please!
Reading to or with your child is
the single most important thing
you can do to support your
child’s learning. Mem Fox,
retired Associate Professor of
Literacy Studies (Flinders
University, South Australia),
and also Australia’s most highly
regarded picture-book author
says, ‘Children need to hear a
thousand stories before they
can begin to learn to read. Or
the same story a thousand
times!’
We encourage you to spend 10
minutes a day reading to/with
your primary school aged child.
It doesn’t matter what you
read, as long as you both enjoy
it and have fun. Books, comics,
magazines, recipes,
newspapers, brochures, the list
is endless. It is fine to read the
same book over and over again.
Check out the websites below
for great ideas and on line

School Parliament Update
On the 25th of May, year 6
students attended the GRIP
Leadership Conference. They
participated in activities that
developed their school
leadership skills and worked
collaboratively with students
from other schools.
Students were engaged and
motivated the whole day and
created plans for how they can
help Charnwood-Dunlop School.
We are sure we will
incorporate some of the ideas
into own leadership styles.
“It was a lot of fun” Connor
Thompson
“We made new friends”
Raymond Wilson
“It was amazing because we
learnt new life skills” Jaan Celik
This Friday we will be holding a
PJ Day in May to raise funds
for the Asthma Foundation. All
staff and students can wear
their PJs to school if they bring
a good coin donation.
Please remember to wear
normal shoes so you can go out

to play at breaks and make
sure your pjs are appropriate
and warm.
Speaking about fundraisers,
thank you to all the families
who made such generous
donations which will be sent to
the citizens of Nepal. This has
demonstrated great community
spirit!

have been
doing some
great
learning in
library times. In this lesson the children were
finding a fiction book and an information book
on a similar topic and comparing the
information and the features of the two books.
Happy Reading

Teacher Librarian
In the next few weeks I will be deleting some
old and damaged books from the library. These
books will be placed in labelled boxes in the fish
bowl and kids and parents are welcome to take
these books. Books not taken will either be
donated to charity or recycled. Look out for
these free books!
REACHing for the stars
Last fortnight during circle time visits I had conversations with classes
about what excellence meant and how it looked when students were
demonstrating it. I was encouraged to hear comments such as "it is
doing your best quality work", "showing excellent behaviour by using
good manners, being respectful and helpful", "striving to achieve your
best".
This fortnight our focus is on ACCEPTANCE.
This value is timely as we discuss and celebrate Reconciliation week.
Students will discuss what acceptance means and how they can
demonstrate it.
We hope to see lots of students earning
points on their REACH cards as they
work towards achieving their wrist
bands.
