Send subscription requests to the Editor. ©2015 NOR PCA. PACE LAP President Skip Wolfe T he Voice from the Trunk is back! I appreciate everyone’s patience, and help in getting us back on track (no pun intended). As you know, Noah Wheeler stepped in to help with the newsletter last year, but had other commitments and was not able to continue. We have decided to take a team approach to the newsletter to take over from where he left off and have split the editor into two positions – a coordinator who is charged with getting content for the newsletter and then the editor who will put the issue together. Les Checel, who was editor for 7 years has agreed to take over the editing duties once again and his right hand will be RuAn Thompson. The club couldn’t be in better hands with Les and RuAn and we should return to the normal schedule. In addition to the team of Les and RuAn taking over the Voices, we also gave the newsletter a bit of a makeover! It has been some time since the look and feel of the Voices has substantially changed, so we took advantage of the hiatus to have a designer go through and refresh the style and create a template that can be used going forward. We have had a nice group of events since the last voices including the Holiday Party at the House of Blues and the outstanding band Abby Normal. Next we had the ever popular Whirlyball event, followed by two very well attended events: a tech session at R&H with close to 100 people, and the new Member Party at Porsche of Beachwood with 130+ people (lots of photos of that event in this issue.) The driving season started with the annual Car Control Clinic/Autocross school at Lakeland where we had a good turnout given the very sketchy spring weather. The first DE of the season will have happened by the time of the printing of this issue, but we are expecting a great turnout for the DE as well as dinner at Bucks, a local track hangout restaurant. Our next big event is the Stoddard Swap Meet and Car Show on June 6th. This event has really been growing over the past couple years and last year’s car show was bigger than ever. This is a very casual show and shine type of car show so you don’t have to be a concours expert to participate. Just give your car a good wash and wax and come on up. It’s fun to just be able to see everyone’s cars, and to check out the vendors selling everything Porsche. It’s a perfect way to spend a summer Saturday and kick off the summer car show season! We are working on putting together a Porsche Parade tech session with a casual show and shine so keep an eye on your email, the club’s website and the club’s Facebook page for details. Our Social Chair, Jon Sabo, is also putting together some house parties and other social events for the summer so stay tuned for lots of club happenings! |2| 2015 NORPCA OFFICERS *President Skip Wolfe 666 Meadowlane Dr. Richmond Heights, OH 44143 440-527-3839 skipwolfe@gmail.com *Vice President Kent Winter 2900 Lamplight Lane Willoughby Hills, OH 44094 440-223-9970 wintermotorsports@gmail.com *Secretary Kellen Miller 3608 Payne Ave., #301 Cleveland, OH 44114 330-340-3335 (c) porschtech@yahoo.com *Treasurer Eric Christiansen 2884 Huntington Rd. So it is with great pleasure that I am able to announce to you that after months of planning, hard work, and a little lobbying, I was able to secure our zone’s first National Concours Judges School, which was recently held on a beautiful weekend in Dayton, Ohio. At the Monterey Parade, Zone 13 Representative James Jacisin and I recognized that there was a need to properly train a new generation of Concours Judges and to make sure that they were trained with both quality and consistency. With the 2015 Parade being held in French Lick, Indiana, James and I felt this was the perfect opportunity for us to work together. When I sent out the announcement, the response was so outstanding that I had to see if we could significantly increase the number of students. The PCA Concours Chairs and Instructors enthusiastically obliged my request. A casual and fun Welcome Dinner was arranged at the car themed Quaker Steak and Lube the Friday evening before the event. On Saturday morning, 53 Zone 4 members representing 10 of the 12 regions participated in the school, which was held at the extremely unique and entertaining Taj Ma Garaj, the perfect venue for such an event. The day began with the students receiving an overview of each of the classes Preparation, Preservation, and Restoration as well as an explanation of the categories: Street, Touring, and Full from the highly qualified instructors John Diwik, Rich Laurie, Pat Yanahan, and Hank Weil. Following the introductory presentations, the students proceeded to their individual classrooms for hands on instruction according to the 2015 PCR (Parade Competition Rules) and completed the day with a practice concours using the Parade scoring sheets. I would like to thank Walter Chin, C. Steven Nelson, and Deniece Chin for all of their hard work and effort in assisting me. I would also like to thank Ms. Vickie Dixon for generously donating the use of this outstanding facility to Zone 4 in order for us to host and conduct this very important National event. I feel this will be very beneficial to Zone 4 as it will allow us to increase the number of our nationally trained judges within the zone. In addition, these judges will be able to bring their |6| new skill set back to the regions, which will serve to strengthen their region’s own concours programs. The fun and good times are definitely in full swing throughout all of the regions within the Zone. I have already visited many of the regions and have attended over 16 events, including spending time on the track, social gatherings and meetings. I always enjoy having the opportunity to spend time with and interact with PCA members. As I visit each region I am always reminded that for me the PCA motto is so true, It’s not just the cars, it’s the people! This month many of us will travel to French Lick, IN, to participate in the 60th annual Porsche Parade, a nationally organized week long extravaganza of competitive and non-competitive events. Be sure to check your local region’s website and newsletter, as well as the Zone 4 website http://zone4.pca.org for the latest details on the many events close to you that are being planned. Also, consider attending other regions’ events, such as: • Join Northern Ohio Region members on June 6 at Stoddard’s Swap Meet and Car Show • June 7 is Southeast Michigan Region’s Family Day at the Races at Waterford Hills • Central Indiana Region GermanFest at Porsche of Ft. To you who are relative newcomers to NOR, I put our newsletter together from the fall of 2004 to springtime in 2012. At that point I was literally burned out of the job by a residential fire that caused loss of desktop publishing capability. The interruption of Voices publication for the past several months bothered me greatly, so when President Skip asked me to step up to assist in resumption, I agreed to do so on a temporary basis. By temporary I meant until a long term replacement can be sourced by a new NOR Board of Directors which will take over club management in January 2016. In the interim Voices will be co-produced by RuAn Thompson and me. RuAn has the more difficult job of collection of the monthly content, while I will assemble the material into a newly constructed Adobe InDesign template designed by a graphics pro associated with our Pres, Skip Wolfe. I’m told it will look 21st Century spiffy. RuAn and I will take over for real in June. As usual at this time of the year I am thinking about the Porsche Parade which will be held in French Lick Indiana in June. It will be my 48th and since it is relatively close to home, I am leaning toward taking the 356SC. It has a fresh set of PMB calipers installed, so other than a tune-up it should be up to the 7 hour trip. I am happy to see that at the time of this writing there are 18 other NOR members registered. There are tentative plans to hold a “goers” meeting in May/June to talk about Parade preparation. Those of us who are veterans might be able to offer tips on how to make your experience more enjoyable. Be on the lookout for more meeting details from Jon Sabo and Skip.
