By Lonni Bechen DRIVE SLOWLY AT HORSE SHOWS When driving through horse parks, be it in a car or pulling a trailer, please be safe, slow, and yield or stop for horses, riders and carriages. The traffic issue is getting serious at the Florida Horse Park, and I have sent messages to management requesting SLOW DOWN or speed limit signs, and barriers to keep people from driving between warm up arena and our arenas. In the meantime, please SLOW DOWN. Happy Spring, STRIDE members, or even of greater importance to horse people, Happy Daylight Savings time! More time to ride! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED APRIL 10TH I hope to see you all at the April 10 STRIDE show, another big show for our club, also requiring volunteers to make it happen. Contact Volunteer Coordinator Kathy Smits at katherinesmits@gmail.com or (304) 279-7372 if you can volunteer in any way! MARCH 6TH SHOW WAS BIGGEST EVER! STRIDE held its second schooling show of the year on March 6, with the most entries we have EVER had in the history of the club. We had to add another judge, a third ring, and needed to juggle scheduling 100 riders, some riding multiple horses and tests, four arenas, DBTL trail, and cones, and it all went well! Thank you Jennifer for scheduling, and even accommodating late entries in this Congratulations to Mary Ann Lambert for winning a $25 gift card to Tack Shack, and Carol Hibbard for winning the complete horsey bath set! All volunteers names go in a drawing for a monthly bonus reward, so, YOU too can have your name in the next drawing...VOLUNTEER at April show! Next drawing April 20th meeting! 1 April 2016 – STRIDE Newsletter - page 1 huge show, Judy Downer for “manning” the phones in search of a last minute judge, Edith Finlayson for judging Trail even though she rode third level as well, and Jody Simonton and Lisa Walsh for being show managers extraordinaire, and especially a huge thank you to all the 28 volunteers who made this show run like clockwork! And, this all happened with the Florida High School Rodeo going on in the covered arenas! types of bits for a prize! Also, there will be another drawing from the members pool who have volunteered at 2016 shows for a gift card. June 18th, Saturday, let’s do summer! Our June membership meeting will be a Pot Luck (Yes, I love pot luck!) Picnic and Pool Party at my house, at Oak Hill Farm in Weirsdale, on Saturday, June 18. Come enjoy pool or just the picnic! There will be no Wednesday meeting in June, and we will have no general membership meeting in July. We will all have rider tans, so no worries about being seen in a bathing suit! POT LUCK AT APRIL 20 MEETING Look up those Martha Stewart recipes, or go to Publix, but do not forget your BRING A DISH Pot Luck Supper at our next meeting, at six pm, at Centerline Sport Horses! See address and details in flyer in this newsletter. Trainer and ‘L’ Judge Kristen Petzold will be bringing out their multi-national champion sport horses, and giving a demonstration on how to show a horse in hand, (for breed shows or Warmblood inspections), and discuss the finer points of conformation. The farm is immediately past the Jai Alai grounds on the left or north side, going east from 441 in Citra about 20 minutes north of Ocala going up 441. Bring a chair, bring a dish, and come out for our general membership meeting, social picnic, and great equine educational opportunity! AND NOW, FOR SOME HORSEY HUMOR Want to know how to be a millionaire? Start out a billionaire, and buy some show horses!! You know you are a Dressage person when: 1. You jump out of your skin when you hear a whistle or cow bell. 2. You practice dressage tests when you are riding the tractor or riding mower. 3. You leg yield your cats and dogs when you want them to move. 4. You may not have any groceries for dinner for a week, but you make an immediate trip to the grocery store when you are out of carrots! 5. Your idea of “bling” is a gemstone or crystal brow band for your horse. 6. You forget family’s and friends’ birthdays, but you know all your horses’ birthdays, and have every show and clinic for the next year marked on your calendar. 7. Your horse has a much more expensive coat than you do. 8. Your husband does something to help out unsolicited, and you scratch his neck and say “Good Boy!” 9. Your idea of a vacation includes either a 3 day trail riding pack trip, fox hunting in England, or going to any World Class Horse competition. (Equestrian Tours can help you out here!) 10. You hear a new song or musical, and think, “That would make great FREESTYLE music!” RIDING AND DRIVING CLINICS There are two clinics in the works for our membership. A riding clinic is planned for September 11, at Rebel Ridge Farm. During our officers’ board meeting last week, we narrowed down the selection of clinicians from results on our Survey Monkey questionnaire, (including A clinician who can teach either English or Western Dressage,) and I am in process of contacting and seeing who is available and will confirm. September 11 clinic will be free to auditors, and will include our September general membership meeting and a Pot Luck PICNIC lunch for everyone! Clinic is great opportunity to get ready for Regionals or any Fall show season, whether riding or auditing. The meeting during lunch break will be in lieu of a Wednesday evening meeting for September. Watch for entry application for clinic in following newsletters as this process is completed. Sharon Young is currently working on putting together a Driving clinic, so watch for information coming forth soon. Last but not least (drum roll, please) … your spouse looks at each of your ribbons as representing how much THAT show costs: “This ribbon here, only costs $1,000!” Good thing I am not a comedienne for a living. MAY 1 TRAIL RIDE ENTRIES DUE APRIL 23 Don’t forget our May 1st “Poker Run” Trail Ride at Equestrian Springs. See entry form on page 8 in this newsletter. Happy Trails to you! Happy horsing around, see you at April 10th show and April 20th at Centerline Sport Horses! MARK YOUR CALENDAR May 18th Wednesday meeting at Ruby Tuesday’s Restaurant will feature Greta Wrigley as guest speaker on “Bits and Bitting” plus a timed optional quiz identifying Lonni 2 April 2016 – STRIDE Newsletter - page 2 MINUTES OF STRIDE GENERAL MEETING (March 16, 2016) Submitted by Jody Simonton, Recording Secretary Lonni Bechen, STRIDE President, called meeting to order at 7:30 at Ruby Tuesday Restaurant in Ocala. the topic of Showing in Hand & Finer Points of Conformation.
