Oct 2005 - Flying Dutchmen Ski Club
Having Fun For Over 46 Years! President Karen Youngwirth Hello Dutchmen!! October 2005 Calendar of Events October 6 - General Meeting A Good Adjustment October 20 - General Meeting Wear Black and Orange November 3 - General Meeting Winter Sports Night at the Riveredge November 5 - FDSC Blood Drive November 12 & 13 Workers Weekend at the Lodge November 17 - General Meeting Membership Meetings begin at 8PM at the LIEDERKRANZ Hill Road and Spook Lane Reading, PA THE Deadline for the November issue of Ski Trails is October 6. It was so fun to see so many members at Trip Night! At this writing, there are some openings on all the trips. Hope to see YOU on one of them!! The second indication that ski season is approaching are “Swap Sales.” Both Pinnacle and Buckman's have sales in the month of October. It is fun to go see what other people are willing to sell, and you just might get the thing(s!) you need. It's especially great for newbies getting into the sport, or for those returning after several years. (I like to go to the sales to socialize, too!) If you are not going to Wildwood, join our friends at the Reading Liederkranz for their annual Oktoberfest. Lots of great food, music, and of course, BEER! Scott Boyer and I, as the current Mr. and Ms. Flying Dutchmen, would like to ask your help in electing our successors. We are not going to have the nominations at a specific meeting. We would like to receive nominations from now until early November. Please take a moment and think about someone that you think has done something outstanding or special for the club or for you as a member. Please give Scott or any member of the board your suggestion(s). A committee will review and select five nominees for each. Election will be at the first meeting in December. Have some fun!! Karen BEAR CREEK SEASON PASS Purchase your Bear Creek Season Pass now at a special price. FDSC members can buy a single Season Pass at the “2 or more” price. I sure hope most of you signed up for at least one trip! September 11th was the Annual Golf Outing at Green Acres. Sue, Dave and helpers did another fine job of running a successful outing for all the members and their guests. Winners will be posted on the website and in Ski Trails. Wildwood. What else can you say!! A weekend of nothing but FUN, FUN, FUN. Oh yeah, swimming, sand sculptures, volleyball, eating and drinking! We have great entertainment on Saturday night by The Cabana Boys. Please talk to members who have gone over the past years to hear about all the FUN you're missing. Think about signing up EARLY next year. The more members, the more FUN! Look for us to have information on the upcoming WINTER CARNIVAL. We would like to have people signing up early for this event so we can make the Winter Carnival a bigger and better success. Have your checks ready to buy tickets at upcoming meetings!! See Sue Moser or myself. For those of you who have not setup your trip plans, please consider Estrimont, Canada. Five days of enjoyment with other "clubbers". It is a bus trip, but you are sure to have a Great time. Please see Sherry Vazquez or myself for more info. We do need more people for this trip. Keep on Talking, Patti FDSC WINTER CARNIVAL Sunday, February 12, 2006 at Bear Creek Buy your discounted ticket at Winter Sports Night. The weekly Wednesday night golf games are over. Mountain biking is over (unless you have a light system). All because the days are significantly shorter now. Time to think about the new race season. We conducted a survey at the Race team picnic to get a feel for what people are looking for this season. Also, some other issues where discussed (budget, webpage, race training, fundraising, etc). I'll try to incorporate all the input I got into my decision making this year. Nastar: Nastar rankings will be different this year. A platinum category has been added. So there will be Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. Also, INSTEAD of Recreational, Expert and Professional, there will be Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze ABILITY GROUPS. Council cup: Mark your calendar! Sunday, Feb. 26th at Blue Mountain. Training: Train hard, be successful! • Sign up for the ski conditioning class at Body zone!! I participated last year and was happy I did it. Not only does it help with injury prevention, it also builds strength. I believe the stronger you are, the faster you can go! And isn't that what we all want?? • Skating/ Gates training: We'll try to organize a Sunday or two in the fall to run gates on skates. More details will be on the bulletin board and at the club meetings. • Race camps/lessons: There are a few options again this year. First timers? Contact me if you are interested in getting professional instructions this year. I'll get you in contact with someone. Auf geht's, Bernie Skimeister Jen Speakman Attention Fellow Dutchmen! I hope everyone got signed up for the trips they want to go on. I did!! By now, all of you should have renewed your Ski Club Memberships. If you haven't yet, please do so TODAY. We really appreciate your feedback and will be compiling the results to help make our club the best it can be. Plus, there will be lots of exciting stuff going on. The local ski shops will be on hand to show you what's new and cool for the coming season. There will also be several ski areas represented. It's a good night to bring along somebody who's thinking about joining the club. There will be lots of people to meet and socialize with. To top all that, there will be door prizes!! Come out and join the fun :) Holly Diane Ferro Hello skiers, As I write this article, trip night is over. Thank you to everyone who signed up for one or more trips. There are still openings on all the trips, so if you didn't make trip night, you can still sign up. Don't forget to fill out the questionnaire on the back of the membership form. We would like to know where you want the club to run trips next year, that's right, next year. It's not too early to start checking into trips. Don't forget to keep on top of your trip payment schedules. Wow! So many upcoming events, trips, lodge workers weekend, swap sales, lesson program, Winter Sports Night, Winter Carnival, conditioning classes, and the list keeps growing. Our club offers so many snow sports events plus many other activities. I'll need to retire to keep up with everything. Speaking of retirement, our club is a great way for retired people and others to keep active and meet new people. See me at the meeting to pickup some extra Ski Trails to distribute to those looking for a good time. THINK SNOW Share the news…and a dessert. Dave Come out to our general meetings and look for the New Member table! Someone will be there to greet you, show you around, introduce you to people and answer your questions. Meetings are held the 1st & 3rd Thursdays of each month at 8pm at the Liederkranz. Current members are welcome to stop by too! Swan Mortgage, Inc. Randall W. Before you know it, the leaves will be changing and the feel of autumn will be in the air. By now, many have signed up for the awesome trips the club has to offer this winter. I hope you had a chance to sign up for your favorite trip. If not, there's still time. Back in August we had our first workers weekend for the year. We had lots of fun and got much accomplished. The lodge looks great. The deck finally got stained and it looks awesome. We also installed balusters (spindles) on the railing to make it much safer. Everyone worked hard and did a great job. In addition to the deck, a new ceiling fan was installed, firewood stacked, and the sofa was mended. I'd like to thank the following people for their help getting the lodge looking so good: Diane Ferro, Chris Gamber, Gail Grumbling, Lori Henne, Ray Jungwirth, Stan Miller, Jeff Rapp, Holly Trout, and Pam Wentling. I would also like to thank Erick Confer for donating his stereo and speakers. Now the lodge looks good and sounds good too. Mark you calendar! The next workers weekend will be the weekend of November 12th. This is the weekend the lodge gets cleaned from top to bottom. We will also be converting a section of the common area into a 7th bedroom. If you're interested in joining the fun, please contact me. I hope I can count on your help.
