I hope you’re enjoying the warm weather, and all of the
summer activities we have available. I know it’s hard to think
about skiing, but Trip Night is only a month away, and we’re
already planning for Winter Sports Night.
I’d like to use this month’s forum to talk about volunteerism. With dozens
of activities throughout the year, we rely on even more dozens of volunteers
working behind the scenes to pull off events. For every minute of an event,
probably at least an hour of volunteer time went into making it happen. Let’s
take our lesson program as an example. Our Skimeister and Ski School Director
spend days planning the program. They attend an annual PSIA Ski School
Manager’s event, and spend additional time planning and executing the “First
Tracks” trip. Instructors take PSIA-AASI clinics at their own expense to maintain
proficiency, and attend planning meetings off season. Volunteers like Maddi
Dondore and Dave Coffey show up early to sell vouchers on lesson night. And
the list goes on. At the Lodge, Craig handles coordination of reservations, but
volunteers keep the facility ready for use. We have a deep list of people who
we rely on. If we need anything built, Jeff Rapp is our go-to guy. Mark David
handles electrical matters, and Neil Kline is our plumbing specialist. Kurt Fehl
cleans the chimney. Bob Zoppel and Ray Leach can be counted on for painting
and general tasks. And again, the list goes on.
My point is two-fold. First, please don’t take anything that happens in
the Club for granted. Know that there are lots of people working behind
the scenes, often with little or no recognition, to make sure that things run
smoothly. So take a minute to seek out the helpers at an event you’re attending,
and thank them. Second, we all need to help out wherever we can. We all
have specialized skills and talents. Take a little bit of your time and give back
where you can so that others may benefit, and so that we share the burden.
On a final note, I want to give shout-outs to Diane Nolfe and Dominique
Ulrich for organizing the June ziplining/mountain biking/whitewater rafting
outing. That’s a perfect example of offering something for everyone - outdoor
events combined with social (and use of the Lodge!) and making it fun!
REMINDER:
We are now back to one meeting per
month! Mark your calendars to meet us
the 1st Thursday of every month unless
otherwise posted here.
**Don’t forget that every Friday the
Dutchmen are celebrating somewhere

THE DEADLINE FOR THE AUGUST ISSUE OF SKI TRAILS IS FRIDAY JULY 15 2016
Trippin’
Kevin Claypoole
Hello to all skiers and boarder friends!
want to start by thanking Cherylene for
the fantastic job that she has done over
the last 6 years as Trip Director! Now, in
this role, I definitely won’t be giving such
eloquent speeches and writing the joyous articles that only
a teacher could do! I’ll try my best in my return to keep up
with the great job that she has done with getting great
leaders and a providing a wide variety of awesome trips.
We will continue to have a trip committee to provide great
new destinations and repeat some favorites of the past
incorporating suggestions from surveys and your input.
We encourage all travelers and want to be travelers to
participate in these surveys.
I
In the July issue, you will see the ads for all trips with
more detailed information; this information will also be
provided on our website. One important change for this
year is that we are starting signups and deposits for the one
western and one Europe trip listed at our June 2nd meeting
at the Evergreen. The Western destination is Telluride
Colorado and we’ll be traveling to Europe to visit Engelberg
Switzerland! These are all fabulous destinations, so do not
delay. Please see one of those trip leaders listed to sign up
and make your deposit on 6/2 (for those trips only). As times
change mostly due to the airline industry, and like anything
else, with fee increases, we want our FDSC travelers to have
more time to plan and pay for these wonderful trips. Your
Trip Leaders have been doing a great job providing you
with wonderful destinations to ski and additional activities
to enjoy while at the mountains.
TRIP NIGHT will be on THURSDAY, AUGUST 4th, at 6 PM.,
and leaders will provide you with wonderful displays of
each trip and a chance to sign on or make another payment,
whichever is the case for you. Eastern trips are to the First
Tracks Mt. Snow, EPSC Lake Placid, Elk Mountain Day Trip,
and Okemo, VT. (Family Trip) and Sugarloaf Maine!
Always check our website, read your constant contact
emails and our newsletters for up to date information.
We would love to see you at our meetings, too! Please be
aware that U.S. Passports are necessary for travel Europe,
and please be aware of any legalities that might prevent
you from crossing the borders. without further paperwork
and permission obtained. Airlines now are asking for
more information including Birthdates and names must be
spelled exactly as on your Passport.
Trip night is the time to showcase our trips with
much added information. Please mark your calendars for
attending that evening, outside under the pavilion at the
Evergreen Club. For your convenience, you will find the trip
application and cancellation policy online at www.fdsc.org.
Some trip leaders require more than the basic club policy
when doing more complicated trips with more restrictions.
I want to thank all of our leaders, past and present for
all of their hard work and dedication in planning for you.
Remember that you must be a member of FDSC or EPSC
to travel with us, so do not delay in renewing or joining
our Club. Enjoy your summer activities including riding your
mountain bike on Tuesdays with FDSC members and Fall
hiking to keep your ski legs in shape.
See you soon biking, hiking or skiing!

Inquiring minds want to know
– when can I put a deposit on Wildwood?
Summer’s just beginning – but if you want to
be at the best end of summer event it’s time to
plan now! The dates are October 7-9. We have
the entire American Inn right at the beach. We’ll
have munchies out Friday evening as everyone
arrives, Saturday breakfast as well as a great
brunch on Sunday morning including made-toorder omelets and French Toast. Saturday dinner is included
– style is yet to be determined but it’s always great! Dinner
will be followed by a great party with your favorite music
provided by “Platinum
Edge”.
The American Inn is located at the north end of the
boardwalk making for easy access. Cape May and many
other attractions are just a short drive away including some
great wineries. We always have great weather in Wildwood
to enjoy the heated pool!
All this for the great per person price of - $150 for a quad,
$160 for a triple and $185 for a double. Most of the rooms
are mini suites with kitchenettes. This event is open to nonmembers. Give us a call at 610-944-3617 or email sterick@
comcast.net for more information.
Stan and Erick
Skimeister
Craig Leister
Well gang, the painting’s done! Thanks
to President Paul and Bob Zoppel, the
remaining “underdeck” and first level front
section now sports a fresh coat, as do the
parts of the deck that were ravaged by the
winter and roof water runoff. Now all we need is bookings…
Just a reminder to all who use the lodge, please follow the
checkout list summer instructions completely – it’s very
important to leave all the doors open downstairs, all the fans
and humidifier running and the door at the top of the stairs
CLOSED.
The first steering committee was held on May 25th.The
committee members are Paul and Margie Prutzman, Stan
Miller and Eric Confer, Bob Zoppel and Peter Galgano, and
chairman is your Lodge Director. The first meeting focused on
committee mission, structure and process. Several functional
topics were raised and will be addressed at our next meeting.
There is plenty of availability for the rest of the summer.
The first weekend in July is still open, as are all dates from
July 22 through October 22. By the time you get this there
will be a new link on the FDSC.org website that will take you
to POCONO MOUNTAIN THINGS TO DO! Click on the Events
tab to see a list of topics. Keep clicking to find details on what
interests you… Better send your reservations in quickly to beat
the rush!! “Thank you” to Ed Soja for getting this new feature
in place on the site.
I know this is really early, but please keep the fall Workers’
Weekend” in mind – we need your help – Nov 11 – 13 is the
targeted date.

The FDSC Ski and Snowboard School is
very unique in the snow sports industry.
Professionally
certified
instructors,
volunteering their time and energy to
provide high quality coaching to our
membership at virtually no cost - 7 weeks of clinics, 1 ½
hours each night, for a registration fee of $25.00. It is a
screaming deal. Take a look at the cost of ONE group lesson
at any ski area, where you may or may not have a certified
instructor. Trust me, it is way more than $25.00.
New to the sport? Looking to get more performance out
of your new equipment? Getting back onto the snow after
a couple of years off? Want to tackle steeper runs with
less anxiety? Thinking about NASTAR Racing? Our Ski and
Snowboard School can help. We are starting the planning
for next season, and hope you’ll consider joining us. You’ll
be glad you did.
A word of thanks to Bip Smedley, our ski school director
for the last several years, for his hard work, leadership and
guidance. He’s been great to work with, great to ski with,
and been a good friend to the school. Buy him a beer when
you see him!

The membership renewal application is in this month’s
Ski Trails to renew your 2017 ski club membership. The new
member application can be found on our Website or email
me at membership@fdsc.org , and I will send an application
to you. Renewal memberships are $30 per person, and new
memberships are $35 per person.
All memberships require an application in addition to
payment. Please remember to sign your application. If all
of your contact information (address, phone #’s, email) on a
renewal application is the same as last year, you only need to
fill in your name, sign, and date the form.
An online application is still in the works but will not be
available this year. Thank you for your patience and for being
a member of the Flying Dutchmen Ski Club.

Stepping up as the new director is Todd Good, who has
a hard act to follow, but is certainly up to the task. Buying
him a beer isn’t a bad idea either. We’re looking ahead to
a great season (hopefully with more snow), and hope you’ll
come along for the ride. Questions? Stop me at a meeting,
or send me an email at skimeister@fdsc.org.
July 7 - Bring your sports car/
motorcycle, antique car/motorcycle,
etc. and park in the large grassy area
aside of the club. Come out and join the fun.

Social Director
Diane Nolfe
Happy summer! By now you should
be kicking back, relaxing, biking,
sailing and chilling. The good news is
that the club has some fantastic events
planned for your leisure time. Start the
month off at the general meeting on
July 7 th. Marge has planned a new social activity that
will be a real GAS—“Bring Your Car/Motorcycle Night”.
We invite you to park your cool†ride†in the lot to the
left of the Evergreen (when you are facing it from the
street). Starting at 5:30 pm you can buy a beverage
and some food and enjoy the show. And speaking of
CRUISING, while you are there, see any one of the River
Float Committee members to purchase you tickets for
the July 16 float. Invite your friends and family as you do
not have to be a member to attend. We still need some
volunteers to help make this day a success. See the ad in
this issue for more information. Finally, at the end of the
month, be sure to join the Mystery Road Rally on July
30! It’s been a few years since we’ve had an event like
this and it is sure to be a big hit. We are teaming up with
the Evergreen Club to make it better than ever. More
information can be found in this issue or on our website.
So get ready to drive, ride and sail through July with the
Dutchmen!
