Big Sky is one of the largest, uncrowded ski mountains with 5,800 acres, 300 named runs, 4,350’ vertical, 30 lifts, and is usually described by acres per skier instead of skiers per acre; there is terrain for any and all abilities. Big Sky provides daily, on-mountain tours geared towards intermediate skiers which explain all the amenities of the mountain and area. Is skiing not your thing? There are shops, spas, restaurants, bars, and night clubs to explore in the village just a few hundred yards away. The resort also offers ziplines, tubing, dog sledding, climbing walls, and even a giant swing; plus, horseback riding and sleigh rides are also available. If you really want to explore, there are trips into Yellowstone via snowmobile or Snow Cat. The trip will be March 19-26, 2016, flying from Columbus and arriving in Bozeman, Mt. Then we hop on a chartered bus with the first stop being a grocery/liquor store to pick up the essentials. An hour or so later, we will arrive in Big Sky to unload at our home away from home: The Big Horn Condos, featuring three bedroom/three bath units. These condos offer balconies, fireplaces, large closets, and, & washer/driers. They also have access to the Huntley Lodge swimming pool, hot tubs, and fitness center (if you didn’t get enough exercise on the mountain). The condos are pseudo-ski in/ski out using a Poma Lift to get you up to the main lifts. Plus, there will be a Welcome Wine & Cheese Party and hopefully a group dinner during the week. Now for the nuts & bolts of the trip: $1675 per person will include air, lodging, transfers, lift passes for 5 days (of 6), and a great time with wonderful friends. The optional ground package will be $976. These prices are based on 6 people per unit. For those of you who don't ski & don't want the lift tickets, deduct $352 from either price; a single supplement will be an addition of $465. The deposit for this trip will be $200 and is due at the Sept. 1st meeting. Full payment will be needed by the Dec. 1st Christmas Party. The Stats on Big Sky -5,800 acres, 300+ named runs on four mountains -Longest run 6 miles: Liberty Bowl to the Mountain Mall -Average Winter daytime temperature: 25 degrees -Average Annual Snowfall: 400+ inches -Skiable Vertical: 4,350 ft. -Terrain breakdown: Beginner — 15% (882 acres) Intermediate — 24% (1397 acres) Advanced — 43% (2,475 acres) Expert — 18% (1,050 acres) Page 3 T H E I N S I D E E D G ET H E I N S I D E Page E D G E3 From the OVSC PRESIDENT: I just got home from the 2015 OVSC Summit, and wow, what a great time I had! I sure hope all the attendees had a good time, learned some new things (and there were a lot), saw some new and exciting ski and travel destinations, and re-connected with friends we have come to know along the way. Cincinnati was our host this year, and the queen city showed herself off in fine fashion, from golfing, a Segway tour, and underground historical brewery tour. The superb Hilton Netherland Hotel in all her art deco fineness was a marvel to see, and the walking tour revealed some interesting historical secrets and facts about some of the famous people that stayed there (think Winston Churchill, President & Mrs. Kennedy, Bing Crosby, among others). A huge round of applause to Tom and Suzy Berning, the Summit coordinators and their committee for the awesome job they did in pulling off such an event. A huge thank-you to Dan Hapner, who along with the host city, oversees that all goes well the entire weekend, from getting the best deal we can from the hotel, to the wonderful food selections at the welcome reception, dinner and breakfast. My Board members this past year – they all did a great job. Kudos, kudos, kudos to them all: Janet Jones, VP, Aggie Waninger, Secretary, Hew Wells, Treasurer, Dan Hapner, International / Summer Trip Director, Marty Baldwin North American Trip Director, and Rick Mygrant, Racing Chair. Without you guys, I would have way too many hats to wear! Thanks to each and every one of you, the OVSC members. SKI ON!!! But a call to the Inn at 330-3394334 might still get you the great deal (the Package deal for this trip will be $120 and will include: a room for two for Friday night, 2 tickets to the performance, and a delightful breakfast on Saturday morning) by telling them you are with the Newark Ski Club party. Again, this is a non-treasury trip, so you will be making your own reservations & paying your own way. To top off this lovely weekend away, we will be visiting 2 local wineries on Saturday afternoon as part of our meanderings home. This is gonna be an amazing way to have some local fun while gaining both historical and wine-ical (is that a real word?) knowledge that will make you look really cool at parties. Or at least our ski club meetings!!! Charlie Voss charlesvoss88@gmail.com 740-503-5246 FROM THE ACTIVITIES DESK: We are always looking for the next great idea. So, please tell us about Your Dream Trip or Activity! Another Activities Committee Meeting will be announced soon; keep an eye out for the time and date. So many great ideas, activities, & trips have come out of these meetings; and we need your help to keep that streak going. Please let the Activities Director or any of the other Board Members listed on page 5 know of your ideas so that we can get onto going someplace where we all can have some FUN!!!!!! ;-} The Next 3 Happy Hours The next two Happy Hours will be held on Saturday evenings to allow everyone to have a chance to attend without having any work conflicts, and the August Happy hour has been moved to earlier in the month. Mark your calendars!!!! The July Happy Hour will be at the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club on Saturday, July 18th beginning around 4 pm; feel free to come by any time after 4 pm for a good time. The Cranberry Bog Tour has been officially cancelled due to all the crap going on out at Buckeye Lake, but we will continue with the Happy Hour. If the weather is nice, we’ll hang on the porch, if it’s crappy, we’ll hang out inside the club. As this is an officially-sanctioned NSC event, you know that no matter what, you’ll have FUN!! In August, we are going to stay with the Buckeye Lake theme & return to Papa Boo’s on Friday, August 7th, meeting up around 6pm (so, back to our normal time frame). This earlier date during the month is because I will be out of the country for a sennight during the middle of the month (Canada, here we Come!) & I refuse to miss 2 of my own events during the same summer when I’m still living in town! So, PLEASE, come out & help us keep Buckeye Lake alive. For September, as the weather starts to change on us, we are going to go try out the newly renovated Trout Club in Newark. Due to our events earlier in the month, I have changed the date (again? Why are you always doing that?!?) to Friday, September 25th at around 6 pm. This will be a new one for me & probably for most of you, so lets go see what a couple of million dollars can do!! & Remember, get Happy, Hour that is ;~} Page 5 T H E I N S I D E E D G ET H E I N S I D E Page E D G E5 Calendar of Events Board of Directors 7/18/15 Happy Hour at the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club 7/31/15 Trumpet in the Land Outing w/Charlie Voss The August Membership meeting has been cancelled, as we have multiple events close to the same date and also to let y’all have a break. 8/7/15 Happy Hour at Papa Boo’s on Buckeye Lake 9/1/15 9/1113/15 9/25/15 Membership Meeting at Harbor Hills Put-N-Bay Elvis Weekend at Saunders Resort Happy Hour at Trout Club in Newark 10/6/15 Membership Meeting at Harbor Hills 10/16/15 Happy Hour at Phil’s Seafood in Zanesville 10/24/15 Halloween Party at the Kenney-McBride Manor House 11/3/15 Membership Meeting at Harbor Hills 11/20/15 Happy Hour at Allison’s Pub in Newark 12/1/15 Membership Meeting/Christmas Party at the Newark Mannerchor President: Mark Weiser 740-452-0606 mdweiser@yahoo.com Vice President: Tom Schmidt 740-404-3409 iskik2s@windstream.net Secretary: Linda Weiler 740-404-1330 lweiler3@yahoo.com Treasurer: Sharon Stevens 419-883-2475 sharonfstevens@hotmail.com Activities: Beth Swick 614-316-8483 bswick@cotc.edu Membership: Kay Morrison 614975-6276 kaymorri@yahoo.com Directors At Large: Tom Brubaker 740-403-8813 mjk2434@yahoo.com Roy Berman 740-8478042 roybermanrt@yahoo.com Newsletter Editor: Christian Phillips 614-580-6591 nscnewsletter@rocketmail.com NEWARK SKI CLUB PAYMENT COUPON Your Name(s) Date Membership (place X on correct type) Individual - Individual 21 years of age or older Family - Married couples 21 years of age or older Renewal $40.00 New $30.00 Renewal $25.00 New $50.00 Trip/Event Amount Trip/Event Amount Trip/Event Amount Check # Total Amount Paid August 2015 July 2015 Sun Mon GEMSTONE: Flowers RUBY meaning contentment Tues Larkspur & Water Lily NAT’L.
