A Message from the President
We have had a wonderful start to the 2006-2007 year! It was great to see lots of new faces as well as many familiar ones at
our September meeting. It’s always so nice to see everyone after the summer has ended and we are all back to our usual
routines. At that first meeting, we announced the special interest groups – including our exciting new ones – and talked about
what each group has to offer. These special interest groups are a great way to meet in a smaller setting and to get to know
each other a little better. If you haven’t done so already, consider checking out one of these groups that fits your interests!
Our general membership meetings are a perfect way to get out of the house, socialize with friends, and “learn something new”
– our theme for this year’s meetings. I hope you plan to attend at least one of the many fabulous meetings we have planned
throughout the year. The upcoming holiday brunch will take place on Saturday, December 2nd, and it is truly a wonderful way
to ring in the holidays. John Heny, Director of Development and Public Relations at Alphapointe Association for the Blind,
will be our guest speaker at the brunch. Alphapointe – one of the philanthropies to which our chapter provides financial
support – is a Kansas City, Missouri-based organization that helps adults who are blind or who become blind later in life
manage aspects of everyday living. You won’t want to miss Mr. Heny’s presentation, as he will provide lots of information
about their terrific organization.
Another way you can get involved in our alumnae chapter before 2006 comes to an end is to order poinsettias through our
annual DG Poinsettia Sale; the order form is included in this newsletter. Supporting this great fundraiser not only provides
you with gorgeous poinsettias – it provides funding for our terrific chapter, which in turn allows us to continue the essential
philanthropic work we do for organizations throughout the greater Kansas City area.
Have a wonderful holiday season!
ITB ~ Katie Kopp-Ohlde

DELTA GAMMA FOUNDATION LECTURESHIP IN VALUES AND ETHICS
The eighth Delta Gamma Foundation Lectureship in Values and Ethics was presented by Ronan Tynan, M.D., on
September 14th in Jesse Auditorium at the University of Missouri. Dr. Tynan's inspirational presentation — Hitting the
High Notes: Living Life to the Fullest — began with a song, which led into the story of his remarkable life. Born with an
orthopaedic deformity called phocomelia, Dr. Tynan needed braces to walk. At the age of 20, his legs were amputated
below the knees, but he never allowed his disability to interfere with his goals. Thus, he became a man of many
talents...a Paralympic Gold medalist in track and field, an equestrian, a medical doctor, a former member of the Irish
Tenors, whose distinctive voice soothed many souls after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Although he
endured countless challenges, he persevered, exhibiting remarkable courage and steadfastness, a stellar example of one
who knows the meaning of values and ethics. At the conclusion of his remarks, Dr. Tynan signed his book, Hitting the
High Notes: Living Life to the Fullest. He then returned to the Mu chapter house where he was serenaded by the
chapter women. A marvelous reception in Dr. Tynan's honor and a delectable dinner concluded the evening.
Summer Callers ~ Thank you to our amazing summer callers: Barb Boersma, Joan Brown, Pat
Calliham, Elaine Claiborne, Susan Durbian, Lisa Hibschman, Peggy Hoel, Dorothy Mulford, Lucinda
Petrie, Carole Pugsley, Christine Say, Gail Ward, and Mary Ann Wilson. They talked to 865 KC DGs out
of the 1418 KC DGs for whom Jan has an address. If you were not contacted, please contact Jan Roach
(913-649-1981 OR lamonter@swbell.net) to correct or confirm your address. Our chapter will save money if
we do not have to pay the post office to return mail sent to an incorrect address and/or to supply us with a
correct address.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
LABELS FOR EDUCATION CHANGES
Front panel product labels will no longer be accepted
by Campbell's. From now on, please clip the UPC
code rather than the front panel of Campbell's
products. Campbell's has given Delta Gamma a grace
period through the transition from "label" collection to
"UPC" collection. If you have any front panels, please
mail them to Gloria Dobbs as soon as possible. These
will count for 2006-2007 recognition of the Top Ten
alumnae and collegiate Labels for Education
winners. For more information, visit
www.LabelsForEducation.com. Over 150 products are
now worth five points each. The products worth five
points say "5 point value" on the yellow logo next to the
UPC. Please mail front panel product labels (ASAP!)
and UPC codes to:

LensCrafters is sponsoring an Eye Care for Kids event from Monday, November 13th through
Friday, November 17th, which will provide free eyeglasses to 500 uninsured and underinsured
school children in the Kansas City area. On these dates, the eye care specialists will be set up at
the Salvation Army located at 101 West Linwood Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri. Children will
be bussed in, 25 at a time, for a two-hour time block, during which they will have their eyes checked
and glasses made — all on-site! Because only a few children can have their vision tested at one
time, we need volunteers to help keep the other kids organized and busy with snacks and activities.
The shifts are listed below. Five to seven volunteers are needed for every two-hour time block each
day of the event. Volunteers will earn our alumnae chapter ‘Service for Sight’ hours. Anyone
interested in volunteering can come for one time block, one day, or every day of the week!
If you would like more information about this opportunity or if you would like to volunteer,
please contact Katie Lamb (Mu 1998) at klamb@lawmo.org OR 816-474-4144.
Morning Shifts — 9:00 to 11:00 am / 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
Afternoon Shifts — 1:00 to 3:00 pm / 3:00 to 5:00 pm
Thank you for helping provide Kansas City students with the eyewear they need to achieve educational success!
