TABLES THAT BLOOM CELEBRATES TEN YEARS
Excitement is building for the tenth
annual installment of TABLES THAT
BLOOM, the acclaimed luncheon and
silent auction hosted by the Greater
Kansas City Delta Gamma alumnae
chapter. To-date, the event has raised over
$100,000 and has benefited sight-related
charities such as Alphapointe, the
Children's Center for the Visually
Impaired, Kansas School for the Blind,
Kansas Specialty Dog and the Delta
Gamma Foundation. Guests have the
opportunity to dine amid spectacular
tablescapes created by the most talented
designers and florists in Kansas City.
T ABLES T HAT B LOOM has grown
considerably from its modest beginnings.
In 2004, a themed luncheon was held at
40 Sardines in Leawood. All the tables
were designed by Delta Gammas and the
decor featured everything from vintage
china to an artificial grass tablecloth.
Even the invitations were thoughtfully
handmade by area alumnae. The idea was
so successful that the chapter decided to
share the event with the community,
inviting area designers to decorate tables
and guests to join the fun. A keynote
speaker was added and the event moved
to the Fairmont Hotel (now the
Intercontinental). In the last ten years,
over 100 different designers have
graciously put their talents on display.
TABLES THAT BLOOM is an event that
local Delta Gammas can take tremendous
pride in. Its notoriety has grown in the
Kansas City area and it’s a model
fundraiser for our Fraternity, an event
which many other alumnae chapters
aspire to emulate.

Colleen McGuire
(Π), E x ecu t i v e
Director of Delta
Gamma Fraternity, will be the keynote
speaker for the tenth anniversary of
TABLES THAT BLOOM. Colleen is the
Fraternity’s seventh Executive Director
and she began her tenure in August 2012.
Colleen is originally from Missoula,
Montana, and attended the University of
Montana. Her education includes a
master’s of military arts and sciences
from the Army’s Command and General
Staff College, and a master’s of national
security and strategic studies at the Army
War College.
Colleen is a retired brigadier general in
the U.S. Army and served on the Joint
Staff. She currently serves on the
Department of Defense's Adult Sexual
Assault Crimes Panel. She was the
commanding general of the United States
Army Criminal Investigation Command
and the 13th provost marshal general, the
first woman to hold either position.
Brigadier General McGuire was also the
first woman to be commandant of the
U.S. Disciplinary Barracks in Fort
Leavenworth, Kansas. Colleen has lived
all over the U.S. and abroad and served in
Iraq.

In 2002, at the age of 14, Elizabeth Smart
was abducted from her bedroom in Salt
Lake City, Utah. She was found alive nine
months later, only 18 miles from her home.
The abduction of Elizabeth and her
recovery were widely discussed in the media and were the
subject of both a movie and a book. Ms. Smart is now an
outspoken advocate for child abduction and recovery programs
and legislation. Don’t miss this incredible Lectureship

A NOTE FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Do Good and we have! At the September meeting, we
collected classroom supplies for CCVI and in October, we
cleaned out our closets and donated more than seven BIG bags
of clothing, one computer and one bag full of costume jewelry
to Alphapointe! November rolled around and we donated 14
gently used cell phones to Cell Phones for Soldiers in order to
help provide cost-free communication services to active-duty
military members and veterans.
At our holiday brunch, in December, we collected 16 WalMart gift cards for both CCVI and Alphapointe totaling
approximately $135 (some of the gift cards didn’t have an
amount listed). As a result, two Alphapointe seniors with vision
loss were impacted in a very real and meaningful way. Thank
you!
Your desire to continue to live our motto, Do Good, inspires
me! Two words; a simple request and yet, this statement is so
much bigger than that! It represents who we are and what we
believe in as an organization and as individuals. Our sisterhood
is strong, our goals are set high, and we have more good to do!
We’d love to see you at one of our monthly gatherings,

fundraiser! Guests will enjoy a three
course, gourmet meal served in complete
darkness by waiters who are blind or
visually impaired. New this year is The
Art of Dining in the Dark, an art auction
containing pieces of fine art,
photography, jewelry and more. Guests
can browse and bid on the art during the
cocktail hour, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
Seating for dinner begins at 6:30
p.m. Tickets are available by calling

at Alphapointe.
Youth Development Activities
Thanks to a generous grant from the Hall
Family Foundation, Alphapointe is

community, and provide volunteers for
both Friends' projects and school-related

Christmas Donations
Alphapointe would like to send a big
THANK YOU to Delta Gamma alumnae
for the generous donation of gift cards to
our rehabilitation clients and employees.
The cards were put to great use by our
Senior Services occupational therapists,
Megan Lewis and Angie Bowers. Megan
and Angie each had clients move into
new apartments after recuperating in
rehabilitation hospitals. They used the
cards to help the clients purchase
everything from dishes and silverware to
linens and towels. Your gifts enabled two
seniors with vision loss get back on their
feet and on the road to independence.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
• Audio Reader Program: Read and
record local newspapers and periodicals
that are broadcast over a network
specifically for people with vision
impairment.
Senior Helper and Visitor: Visit local
seniors with vision impairment in their
homes (ex. reading mail, running
errands, making shopping lists, etc.).
Event Volunteer/Committee Member:
Help with the Alphapointe Golf
Tournament, holiday party, company
picnic, and other events.
Creative Arts Program Volunteer:
Artists are needed to assist with the
Alphapointe Creative Arts program
twice a month.
Administrative/Clerical Volunteer: Data
entry, mailings, filing, faxing, and
follow up calls to our rehabilitation
clients.
Work Adjustment Center Volunteer:
Activities range from helping clients
with exercise routines, at lunch and
break times, and helping during holiday
and birthday parties.

SILVER STREAKERS HONOR FOUNDER

The
Silver
Streakers interest
group was formed
in February of
1995 by Dorothy
Mulford (BH
1942, pictured at
left). According to
Dorothy, at
Founders Day the
previous year, the
50-year members
were honored,
however, there was no recognition of
those members who had been Delta
Gammas for more than 50 years. Dorothy
sought to remedy the situation. She got
out her membership directory and called
everyone who was a 50-year plus
member. Many of the DGs, whom she
contacted, were receptive to the idea of a
special group just for them. Dorothy held
a meeting at her home, which 21 DGs
attended, and the Silver Streakers group
was born.
Since that fateful day eighteen years
ago, the Silver Streakers have gathered
for lunch and socializing six times every
year. The president of the alumnae
chapter is invited to attend the
luncheons. Members are notified by a
group of loyal women who personally
contact the DGs on their calling
list. There are currently 220 Delta
Gammas who are 50-year plus members,

so this is a daunting job. Dorothy
instituted a “social only” format with “no
business meeting, no minutes, no good
works.” Delta Gammas, who attend the
luncheons, pay for their lunch plus a
small amount for the “kitty.” This money
pays for miss-you, condolence and get
well soon cards. The money is also used
for sending memorials when a member or
their spouse passes away.
The Silver Streakers group has
benefited our alumnae chapter in a
multitude of ways. Friendships are
renewed, the value of membership in
Delta Gamma is recalled, and a number
of 50-year plus members are paying dues
a n d s u p p o r t i n g T A B L E S T H AT
BLOOM. New 50-year members are
welcomed every spring. The Silver
Streakers continue to cherish venerable
friends such as Martha Sklar (AK
1936), Ramona Walker (Mu 1940),
Joan Brown (Mu 1942) and Dorothy
Mulford (BH 1942). These beautiful
women have been Delta Gammas longer
than anyone else in our alumnae
chapter. Dorothy commented “it’s sort of
a pay-back time for a long Delta Gamma
life of good works and doing good.”
In October of 2013, Dorothy turned
over the leadership of the Silver Streakers
to Emily Ballentine (AP 1955) and
Barbara Larison (AK 1957). Helen
Taliaferro (BK 1943) will continue as
the liaison with the Homestead Country
Club where the luncheons are
held. Carolee Atha (DΩ 1977) has
volunteered to be our “Care Caller,”
which is a new aspect of the Silver
Streakers. She will contact members who
are unable, for a variety of reasons, to
attend the luncheons. The callers will
continue calling, however, we hope to
simplify the task by using email to
contact some members.
The Silver Streakers is a great group
and I would like to encourage everyone,
who is “old enough” to participate. In
2014, the Silver Streakers will have a
luncheon on February 21, April 18, June
20, August 15, October 17 and December
19. Please mark your calendar and plan to
join us.

In closing, I want to thank Dorothy for
creating the Silver Streakers and for her
many years of devoted service to keeping
it a viable group within our alumnae
chapter. Dorothy, you have given real
meaning to the concept of “doing good.”

Streakers, an honorarium has been sent to
CCVI.

NEWS FROM MU–UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI
Mu kicked off the year with a visit to the Delta Gamma
Center for Children in St. Louis to see the impact of our
Fraternity’s Foundation firsthand. On October 11, Mu initiated
82 outstanding new members.
A highlight for the semester was the 15th Lectureship Series
presentation featuring Aimee Mullins, Paralympian, model
and actress. The turnout was fantastic and we enjoyed hosting
a great group of alumnae from Kansas City. Several members
participated in the Race for the Cure on October 12 in support
of Mu Chapter’s amazing ATC Julie Ryan (EN).
For Homecoming this year we were paired with Alpha
Epsilon Pi and came in sixth place overall, winning first place
in skit! Also, our annual Anchor Splash competition in
November was another success! We earned $5,500 for the
Delta Gamma Foundation. Our members worked very hard
this semester to earn a high GPA with a new study hour
requirement and we’re excited to see the results.

NEWS FROM BETA KAPPA–UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS
Beta Kappa began the year by inviting 53 wonderful women
to join our chapter. After the excitement of bid day, we hosted
Anchor Splash and Anchor Slam in late September. With a lot
of hard work, the women of Beta Kappa raised over $10,000
for Service for Sight!
Our sisterhood retreat at a comedy club in downtown Kansas
City was held in October. Fall also brought our casino-themed
dad’s weekend, family weekend and our “Famous Couples”
themed semi-formal.
Beta Kappa proudly welcomed our new members into our
sisterhood with initiation and brunch in late November. Three
days after initiation, Delta Gamma received the news that we
had been chosen for Rock Chalk Revue for the third year in a
row! Our directors, Lesley Daughtery (2010), Katie
Rudolph (2013), and Haley Lynn (2011) have put a
tremendous amount of time and effort into the show and it’s
sure to be a success! The show will be in March 7, 8 & 9 at
the Lied Center in Lawrence.
In December, Mom Kandy organized a lovely holiday party
featuring delicious treats prepared by our fantastic chef,
Michael! Our Parent’s Club provided themed study snack
nights, which was
appreciated during
finals. All in all, its
been a great year
and we look
forward to what
2014 brings!

Thank you to the 220 Delta Gamma alumnae who have paid
their local chapter dues to date (check your name/address label
on this newsletter to see if we have received your dues). We are
well on our way to meeting our goal of 300 dues paying
members. Your financial support has allowed us to "Do Good"
in our community.
In the first half of this year we were able to make a charitable
contribution to Children's Center for Visually Impaired (CCVI)
Holidays in Crestwood, make Anchor Splash donations to Mu
and Beta Kappa chapters, sponsor a youth breakfast for summer
campers at Alphapointe and contribute to the Panhellenic
Scholarship fund. Your dues have allowed us to host wonderful
programs including the Holiday Brunch. Local dues have also
been used to print our membership directory and the fall and
winter newsletters.
If you have not paid your local dues it is not too late. With
your payment we can continue to support our local collegiate
chapters, CCVI, and Alphapointe and offer the outstanding
programs we have come to expect.

Join Beta Kappa Collegians for Senior Brunch
This spring, each graduating collegiate member will be
receiving a gift from Delta Gamma Fraternity. The gift provides
the Fraternity the opportunity to connect with these collegiate
women who are about to embark on their post-college life as
young professionals and new alumnae. Each graduate will
receive the book, Life After College Explained, developed by
Cap & Compass. The book covers a breadth of topics,
including apartment leases, filing taxes, dinner etiquette and
auto insurance. The front and back covers of the book will be
customized specifically for Delta Gamma. Additionally, a letter
from the Fraternity will accompany the gift to welcome the
graduating member to alumnae life.
The Beta Kappa Chapter will be holding a senior brunch at
the end of the year (date/time – TBA) and all Greater Kansas
City DG alumnae are welcome to attend. For more information,
