Public Safety Reminder TAVARES — The Lake County Public Safety Department is reminding residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and NOAA weather radios since the end of daylight saving time occurred on Sunday, Nov. 3. National statistics report that more than 95 percent of U.S. households have at least one smoke alarm installed, however, an estimated 25 percent of those households have smoke alarms that do not work because of dead or missing batteries. Two-thirds of all home fire deaths occur in homes with non-working or missing smoke alarms. Smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, on every floor of a home and in hallways leading to bedrooms. While it is recommended that batteries be replaced in smoke alarms and weather radios semi-annually, the devices should also be tested at least once a month. With a home fire occurring every 85 seconds in the United States, the proper maintenance of smoke alarms increases the chances of surviving a fire by 50 percent. Coupled with a family fire-escape plan, operational smoke alarms can save lives. Smoke alarm units should be replaced every 8-10 years with newer units. The Lake County Public Safety Department offers a program that provides income-eligible residents residing in unincorporated Lake County with free smoke alarms. Qualified individuals include income-eligible residents who are 65 years or older, have households with children under 12 years of age or have households with disabled individuals that may impede escape action. The Lake County Fire Rescue Division handles smokealarm installations on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last. For more information about the smoke-detector program, call the Lake County Department of Public Safety at 352-343-9458. For further information and facts on smoke alarms, residents are encouraged to visit the US Fire Administration website at www.usfa.fema.gov/campaigns/smokealarms/. Black Wednesday in Tavares _____________________________________________ Black Friday is popular as a shopping day for a combination of several reasons. According to W ikipedia; as the first day after the last major holiday before Christmas it inaugurates the Christmas season. Additionally, many employers give their employees the day off as part of Thanksgiving leave, increasing the potential number of shoppers. Black Friday as a term has been used in multiple contexts, going back to the nineteenth century, where it was associated with a financial crisis in 1869 in the United States. The Tavares Chamber of Commerce is bringing back, by popular demand, “Black Wednesday”, at its November Business Luncheon. Kicking off the Tavares holiday shopping season, attendees of the Luncheon will have the opportunity to start their shopping as Chamber merchants will have gifts prepared for purchase before and after the Luncheon. Tables will be set up along the walls of the Civic Center with items to purchase. Some items will be pre-packaged and ready to deliver. There will be something for everyone! The caterer for November’s Luncheon is Blakes Subs & Ice Cream. The speaker will be Nancy Muenzmay discussing the the Business Opportunities Center in Eustis and how all businesses should take advantage of the services they offer. With Holiday shopping, networking, and enjoying a great lunch; this is one “holiday” event you do not want to miss! Mark your calendar to attend the luncheon on Wednesday, November 27 at the Tavares Civic Center, 100 N. Caroline Street from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Plan to arrive early and remain late to get a jump start on your Holiday shopping while supporting our member merchants during our “Black Wednesday”. Please be sure to RSVP with the Chamber. For more information on this or any other Chamber event, contact the Tavares Chamber (352) 343-2531.
