Words from the President
Welcome Spring!
This seems to be the time of the year when we take a long look at our unfinished projects and
make an attempt to complete a few. Today seems like a great day to sit down at the sewing
machine and work on one of those UFO’s. Actually most everyday seems like a good day to
sew. Happy Sewing!
Our first “Let’s Do Lunch” on April 25th at Dos Banderas was really fun. We had thirteen
members in attendance and plan to do it again in July. It was really great to visit with everybody
– I learned so much.
Don’t forget to bring in your receipts, dated from April 8th to May 5th for our Support or
Sponsors raffle. Our sponsors this month are: Sew Let’s Quit It, Dos Banderas, Thomas

Program News
Now that Spring Cleaning is behind us----May’s program will be David Werther’s,
“Featherweights and their Historical Overview”. This lecture will most interesting and give us
an even greater appreciation for those coveted machines.
Amazing facts that even our
Grandmothers would have loved to know about their favorite machines. I can’t wait!
June 2 Lecture offers an opportunity to “Lift the Quilts out of your Stash” with Karla Alexander
from Oregon. She is a quilter/author of many well-known quilting books including Shuffle The
Deck, Color Shuffle, and Dynamic Quilts with Easy Curves. Her Workshop on June 6 promises
to be awesome and full of energy. YOU PICK YOUR PROJECT! I will have pictures at the
Program table. There are over 10 options to select from and create your “Gentle Curved
Piecing” quilt. You will learn her easy method for curves and please take a look at her website.

don’t miss the opportunity to have a great workshop with project freedom and take home
stunning looking quilt blocks!
In July, our own Guild member, Vicki Maloney, will share great tips for “How to work with
your Longarm Quilter to obtain best results”. Her lecture will give us a new perspective about
the final finishing stage for our quilt. Should it be edge to edge versus custom? How do you
express what you are looking for and get what you want in the quilt? Learn how to work
together as a super quilting team.

Raffle Quilt
Ticket sales for the 2015 raffle quilt will commence with TAQG Rally Day. We are now
working on the 2016 raffle quilt. There will be kits for grannie flowers available at the May
meeting, with papers and fabrics. Please return them at the June meeting or at Compass Center
Retreat. The quilt will be at the retreat for those who are willing to do some applique on it. Feel
free to jump in and help.

TAQG NEWS
RALLY DAY IS COMING!
Rally Day will be held Saturday, July 11, 2015 at Mimosa Lane Baptist Church, 1233 N.
Beltline Road in Mesquite. This all-day event is free to all quilt guild members. Goodie bags
are available to the first 500 persons in the door.
The speaker will be Kathy Dunigan, internationally known appliqué teacher, designer and
lecturer. Her website is www.kathyduniganappliqueacademy.com.
Lunch tickets are available for $10.00 for a Panera Bread sandwich box lunch. You will receive
a confirming email for your lunch purchase. June is the last month lunch tickets will be sold.

Raffle Tickets are available from Marsha for the Pre Rally Day Raffle Basket. This fabulous
basket includes a new Janome Skyline sewing machine from Thomas' Sewing Center which
retails at $1499.
Mini Quilts can be turned in for the Mini-Quilt Auction through the June meeting. Prizes will
be awarded for Viewer's Choice and the two quilts earning the most money. Be sure you have a
label on the quilt with your name, address and guild.
Retreat
Retreat is May 28th through the 31st at the Compass Centre in Mount Calm, TX.
Remember all money should be turned in. The block for the drawing is the card trick block at
http://www.quilterscache.com/C/CardTrickBlock.html. The color 1 is white. Color 2 is
predominately black. Color 3 is predominately red. Remember to bring your fat quarters for
bingo and 2 ½ inch strips by WOF or two 2 ½ inch strips cut from a fat quarter for strip poker.
Be packing up your projects, sewing machine and notions.

laughs.

Handy Tip
Easy way to hand wash small pieces of fabric or applique.
Items you'll need -- A salad spinner from the discount store -- it is plastic and designed to spin
excess water when washing lettuce and other salad greens. Usually cost less than five dollars.
If I purchase small pieces of fabric such as charm squares or block of the month kits, I usually
like to preshrink the fabric. After all stitching is finished; I also soak my appliqued block in
warm soapy water to remove the washable glue stick. When I purchase vintage hankies, I
launder them carefully by hand. So I find many uses for the salad spinner.
Here is where the salad spinner comes in -- after rinsing the fabric, hankie or applique blocks I
place them in the salad spinner and spin. The excess water spins out and the small fabric pieces
or blocks are not dripping wet so are easier to separate and hang to dry. They dry faster and I
don't get wet trying to hang them on the clothesline or hangers.
Sunshine and Shadows
Reta Day’s Aunt Jane passed away April 3rd at the age of 91. She was a quilter and a mentor to
Reta. We are sorry for her loss. A cash donation from Terri and Jeff Canaday, was given to the
guild in memory of Jane.
Get well wishes go to Julie Hirsch.

Small groups are a good way to get to know members of the Guild better, form bonds, learn new
techniques, get help with projects, sit and sew together, and support each other along life’s journey. We

Meeting Minutes – April 7, 2015
The meeting was called to order at 7:03 pm by President Suzy Boyle. Suzy welcomed everyone
to the meeting and announced that there will be a signup sheet to find out the interest of “Let’s
do Lunch”. The first get together would be April 25th, and email will be sent out about the
location. This will be a get together 3 times a year.
Minutes: Debbie Simms presented the minutes from the March meeting, and they were
approved with no additions or corrections.
Treasurer’s Report: Roxanne Garrett gave the treasurer’s report. The beginning balance was
$19,674.69 with income of $1,866.75 and expenses of $733.48 leaving an ending balance of
$20,807.96.
TAQG: Marsha Meeks said that Rally Day is July 11 and each guild needs to submit 2 mini
quilts. She has lunch tickets for $10.00 and raffle tickets for the pre raffle day basket.
Community Service: Cheryl Olsen and Gail Pearce said that new kits were available and a
workshop is scheduled for June 13 at the church.
BOM: Barbara Brooks showed the BOM for next month, Milky Way. The block swap will be
next month and pincushion swap in June.
Retreat: Cynthia Bennett asked that if you need any information regarding retreat please
contact her.
Show and Tell: The quilt holders for show-and-tell were Mary Shannon and Martha Jones.

The meeting reconvened at 7:45 pm.
The winner for the Support our Sponsors drawing was Bobbie Tartt.
BOM drawing: Barbara Brooks had total of 35 Sun Bonnet Sue blocks. The blocks were split,
with one set facing right and one set facing left.
Door Prizes Drawing: Door Prizes were donated by Urban Spools, Pieced Together Studio,
Blue Ribbon, Sew Let’s Quilt It, Dan Chenault and Melissa Sobotka
Dana Dunlap gave us take-down information for the room.

Sack Lunch Ministry
The demand for the church’s sack lunches has grown tremendously, with the church now giving
away about 35 lunches a week to the homeless or the hungry. The following is the list of items
for the sack lunch ministry operated by our facility location host, First Presbyterian Church. Just
pack the lunches in a small brown paper sack with non-perishable items, such as:







canned tuna or chicken salad
peanut butter and crackers
cheese and crackers
chips
fruit cup
cookies
pudding
You may also include a drink (although not necessary) as well as a napkin and spoon. Items
should not require a can opener. Bottled water is also much appreciated... You can find many of
these items at a Dollar Tree, Big Lots, Wal-Mart, etc.
The church also collects pancake mix and syrup. We also have a tip jar at the sign-in table,
and if everyone were to throw in their loose change we could donate a great deal to the church
each month. Thank you so much!
