This journey is easier sung about than done. It takes humility and time to recover a second innocence. Titles, of the kingdom of God. Jesus says and demonstrates in today’s Gospel that members of God’s kingdom must hold in their embrace the most inconsequential of persons, for that person is identified with Jesus. This attitude ran counter to the intuition of the world of Jesus’ time, as it does in ours. The simplicity set forth by Jesus requires the shedding of that earthly power demands. Membership in the Kingdom is light enough to put a song in our heart. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. THE CHURCH OF SAINT ANSELM MISSION STATEMENT We are a Roman Catholic family of believers committed to following Jesus by welcoming, celebrating, caring, evangelizing and growing in His image. THE ORDER OF MASS TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME GATHERING HYMN GATHER YOUR PEOPLE _____THE LITURGY of THE WORD_____ PENITENTIAL ACT (A) (CONFITEOR) I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (striking their breast, all say) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. PENITENTIAL ACT (B) Priest: Have mercy on us, O Lord. People: For we have sinned against you. Priest: Show us, O Lord, your mercy. People: And grant us your salvation. GLORIA Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. PSALM The Lord upholds my life. Used with permission. LicenSing 601922 THE NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (BOW) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. With that in mind, I want to mention Coffee and Donuts. After the 8:00 Mass and the 9:30 Mass, coffee and donuts are served in Kelly Hall for all who want to stay around. I try to avoid donuts since donuts do not like me but I do have coffee and chit chat with whoever. So try it. You just may like it. On October 4 we will have a pet blessing sometime after the 11:30 Mass. The time will be in next week’s bulletin. We do this once a year around the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi. SAINT ANSELM FOOD MINISTRY Our collection this month was approximately 200 pounds of food and $1471.00. Thank you all!! COLLECTIONS September 6…………………………$ 9,740.75 September 13………………………..$14,550.00 This weekend once again you will hear me at Mass, asking for your support for the families who deeply desire a Catholic education but may be unable to afford it in whole or in part. What saddens me is that there are still so many others in our parish and surrounding towns who are hesitant to approach us or any Catholic school to ask for such assistance. While I can understand their reasoning in part—few of us are really comfortable asking for assistance when we know there are others in greater need. I wish they could move past that and avail themselves of a Catholic education for their children. Saint Anselm School has programs for the gifted; we have a STEM program; we have programs for those with learning disabilities and speech challenges. We have amazing technology and a full array of the arts. We achieved National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence status. We do all we can to make sure we have highly qualified teachers—many of whom have Master’s degrees. But most importantly, we surround all of this in an experience of the Catholic faith. Religion is not simply a class that is offered here—it is at our very core. It is integrated into all classes—not as an adjunct, but as an integral understanding of science and math, communication, song, music and technology. In all things we help our children recognize the amazing design of God’s creation and appreciation for the gift of human creativity in God’s image. You have heard me share with you so often that we understand our role in preparing our students for a full and meaningful life here, but also for the life that lasts into eternity. As we look around us and watch the daily news, it is easy to see how the world needs this understanding of the value and dignity of every human person. And it starts right in the home…but then it needs to find other places that will continue to nurture what good families have begun. If you want that for your children and grandchildren, know that we are here for you and for them. Take that first step. Thank you for your donations and support. In a very real way you take the hands of these children and walk with them. What a blessing! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Toward the end of the second century, a churchman in North Africa, Tertullian, described an early form of penance. Imagine if it had survived! There were three steps to this very public ritual. The unfortunate sinner was brought before the community in an itchy garment of goat’s hair. The communities of the day were small and intimate, and everyone knew everyone else. The shame of exposure for a big sin—murder, idolatry, or adultery—would have been profound. The penitent would beg the community for prayers of intercession, and then go sit in a place assigned to penitents. After this public confession, the penitent would be assigned some discipline, usually a relatively severe fast, or the wearing of distinctive garb. This remedy for sin was for a certain period of time, or at least until the bishop (every small community has its own bishop) judged that enough was enough. Then the person would be readmitted to the eucharistic community, although Tertullian doesn’t tell us how. Probably the bishop tenderly placed his hands on their heads, precisely where they were anointed at baptism. We do know that the readmission of penitents to the eucharistic table became in some churches a great celebration, and there are records from Spain of bishops leading penitents in a dance, like processionals into the eucharistic hall on Holy Thursday. —Rev.
