Today we celebrate one of the tenets of our creed: that the Lord ascended into heaven. From Mark’s Gospel we hear the final words Jesus spoke to his disciples shortly before he ascended into heaven. Those were words of commissioning, no less real for us today than they were to the disciples then. We are called to “proclaim the gospel to every creature.” For the vast majority of us, this means that we proclaim the gospel by the witness of our everyday lives. Treating others with dignity and respect, providing for those less fortunate than ourselves, being good stewards of the many gifts showered on us, coming together as God’s family in worship and praise—these are all signs that the gospel has taken root in our lives. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved. ~ Mark 16:16 LIGHT IN A DARK WORLD At its best, the family is a school of love, justice, compassion, forgiveness, mutual respect, patience and humility in the midst of a world darkened by selfishness and conflict. In these ways, the family teaches what it means to be human. However, many temptations arise which try to coax us into forgetting that male and female are created for covenant and communion. For example, poverty, and other intellectual mistakes can all create contexts that challenge or threaten healthy family life. The Church resists these things for the sake of protecting the family. In just a few short weeks Saint Anselm School will go from a bustling building bursting with children engaged in all manner of learning to a quieter, more reflective locale for the summer. Our preschoolers have just completed the year, and we are ready to usher in the fullday preschool option for children and families for next year. This week our Kindergarten children visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, and then they, too, bid farewell. On Saturday, May 30th, forty eighth graders—some of whom have been here since they were three-year-old preschoolers—will take their final bow as students of Saint Anselm School. That is always a bittersweet experience for all us here. As their teachers, we have wondered at their amazing growth throughout the years. We did our best, and we trust that with the steady support of their parents, these young people are ready to venture forward. But for most of them, they will have spent more years under our roof than of any other single school to come. They have been a stellar class, and they abound with talent and promise. Our final day of school this year will be Wednesday, INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? June 3rd. Before that we will have a talent show on June If you, or someone you know, are interested in 1st, field day on June 2nd, and on that final day we will becoming Catholic, welcome. The journey is end as we begin: gathered together in prayers of thank at Mass. We will say a fond farewell to Mrs. Kathryn ongoing year round. Call now – 729-9575. Many items have accumulated over the past couple of years in the Lost and Found cabinet in the baptistery, such as keys, sunglasses, children's books, etc. Please take a moment to check and see if something you have "lost" may now be "found." Anything remaining by June 15 will be donated or disposed." SAINT ANSELM FOOD MINISTRY Thanks for your generous donation of $839.32 and approximately 250 pounds of food this month. COLLECTIONS May 10………………………………..$11,828.24 Earthquake Relief……………………..$ 2,514.00 Gentile (please join us for the reception in her honor after the 9:30 Mass on May 31st in Kelly Hall) and thank her for 45 years of loving ministry to the children of this parish and school. We will recognize other transitions— as happens in our lives all the time. We will officially move our children up to the next grade level, and then release them to the care of their parents, the warmth of the summer’s sun, and relatively carefree days of vacation. It is with deep affection, genuine admiration, and heartfelt gratitude that I thank all of our teachers for their Teaching at a Catholic school demands a special kind of person, one who understands that bringing the faith to children is a true calling. It is more than academics. It is more than a career. It is the ability to see beyond a whole bunch of “stuff” in life to the core of what matter. We at Saint Anselm are truly blessed to have such teachers touching the lives of our dearest possessions: our children. 43rd Annual ST. ANSELM FESTIVAL May 21 – 24, 2015 Calling All Volunteers!
