Once more we give you a new product catalogue – this
time for 2012, which is a special year in the sports world.
The Games of the XXX Jubilee Summer Olympiad are
scheduled to take place in London from 27th July to 12th
August. The city will host that unique and full of emotions
event for the third time – earlier the Olympiads in 1908
and 1948 were held there.
Watch the Olympics and support your favourites!
Waiting for that remarkable event, let us remind you of
several facts related to Poland and the Olympic Games:
• 1924 – Poles officially participated in the VIII Summer
Olympic Games in Paris - although our compatriots were
the Olympic team members of the Poland's partitioners
before; at that time 1914 competitors represented Poland
in 25 sports events;
• 1928 – Halina Konopacka, a discus thrower, gained the
first gold medal in the history of the Polish athletics at the
IX Summer Olympic Games in Amsterdam;
• 1964 – Irena Szewinska became the first Polish athlete
who gained 3 medals during one Olympic event. At the
Games of the XVIII Summer Olympics in Tokyo she won
the gold medal in the relay race 4 x 100 m, and two silver
medals: in the 200 m race and the long jump;
• 2000 – Robert Korzeniowski, as the first Polish athlete in
our history, gained 2 gold medals during one event. He
won the most desirable prize in the 20 km and 50 km race
walking at the Games of the XXVII Summer Olympiad in
Sydney. Poles gained the most medals (32) at the
Olympics in Moscow in 1980. Four times the Polish
Olympic teams came back with 7 gold medals: from
Tokyo, Munich, Montreal and Atlanta. So far Poles have
won the most Olympic medals (22 gold, 17 silver and 13
bronze) in the athletics.
To emphasize that special time we have included some
information about the Summer Olympics in the
catalogue. The journey starts at the Olympic Games in
Beijing in 2008 and ends at the Olympic Games in Mexico
City in 1968. The history of the Olympics that we have
written about coincides also with the development of our
company, which was founded in 1966. And that is not all...
We have also prepared interesting interviews with the
athletes who took part in the Olympic Games, so let us
invite you for that sports time travel and the retrospective

Beijing 2008
The Games of the XXIX Olympiad were held in Beijing, China, from
August 8th to August 24th, 2008. It began at exactly 8 past 8 p.m.
(UTC+8) on the 8th day of the 8th month in the year 2008. In the
Chinese culture the digit eight is the symbol of happiness,
abundance, money and peace.
In Beijing the 302 sets of the medals were won. The total of 11 526
participants from 205 countries competed in 28 sports disciplines.
President Hu Jintao announced the official opening of the Games.
The Olympic multi-medallist at gymnastics, Li Ning lit the Olympic
torch.
Beijing was declared the official host of the 2008 Olympic Games
on July 13th in 2001 during the IOC session in Moscow. Beijing was
selected out of the five cities: Toronto, Paris, Istanbul, and Osaka.
These Games had been the first Summer Olympics in Asia since
1988 (the Seoul Olympics).
For the first time in the history of the Olympics, five mascots were
selected, four of them were the animals, the Chinese culture
metaphor: the fish, the giant panda, the Tibetan antelope and
the swallow. The fifth was the Olympic flame - a symbol of
the traditional Chinese Dragon. Their names were Beibei, Jingjing,
Huanhuan, Yingying and Nini. The first syllables of the mascots'
names form the sentence "Beijing Huanying Ni", which means
"Welcome to Beijing".
All the athletics competitions, the opening and the closing
ceremonies of the Olympic Games were held at the Beijing
National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest.
The first national anthem heard at the stadium during the XXIX
Olympic Games was the Polish Mazurek Dabrowskiego. It was
played while rewarding the gold medallist in shot put - Tomasz
Majewski, who won with the result of 21,51 m. The oratorio written
by the famous Polish composer, Krzysztof Penderecki, was among
the works which the authorities of Beijing ordered for
the Olympics.
There was also another Polish accent during the Games - Polish
hammers were present there, of course with the Polanik logo.
In Beijing the total number of 47 athletics events took place:
24 men's and 23 women's.
Barbara Madejczyk - javelin throw
Why have you chosen the javelin throw?
When I started my adventure with athletics,
I was not bound to one sports discipline.
It turned out that I was doing well in several
sports, so my coach said that perhaps I would
be the heptathlonist. But at the competitions
my results in javelin throw were clearly getting
better and better. So, at the age of 15 I became
the youth record holder of Poland (45,78 m,
with old type javelin). Next year I was
appointed to the national junior team and that
was how I became a javelin thrower.
There is a picture of you, on Wikipedia, wearing a T-Shirt with
the Polanik logo, so it means that the Polanik products,
especially the javelins, are not alien to you.
- Yes. At the beginning I had only the Polanik javelins. My first
personal bests and the youth national record of Poland were set
with Polanik. And I still use their javelins today.
The 7th place at the Olympic Games in Beijing has been your
biggest success in your career. How do you remember that
event?
It’s true that the Olympics in Beijing have been my greatest
success. I came to China with the 23rd result in the world and came
back being the 7th. It was the sports event that have made the
greatest impression on me in terms of sport and organization.
China is also a very attractive and exotic country to us, Europeans.
I had a wonderful time at the Olympics and I wish everyone to
experience that.
Interviewed by Artur Wolski
Polish Athletics Medals: gold
Tomasz Majewski - shot put, silver
Igor Janik - javelin throw
Did you like Beijing? Have Olympians got
time to sightsee places where the Olympics
take place?
Beijing is a stunning and very powerful city.
It is highly developed in terms of technology
and motorization. Wherever you go, the
streets are crowded with people. Usually
participants of the Olympics and other
competitions have some time to see at least
the most characteristic places for a particular
city. A whole event, including travelling both
ways, usually takes from 3 to 4 days. Athletes always find couple
hours to go sightseeing. It is different when it comes to
championships, because the event lasts approximately 2 weeks,
which give athletes a chance to see something more. They have
time to take some pictures or use a camcorder in order to make
memories last longer.
Your results in Beijing weren’t particularly good, are you
preparing for London now? The Games are coming soon. Yes, in Beijing I didn’t achieve what I wanted mainly because of
the bad weather conditions. Also, the technical problems with the
athletics equipment were the obstacle I wasn’t able to overcome.
The Olympic Games in London are coming up. Almost every day,
during every training, I wonder how my start would look like, what
things require changes, what I should work out on or make better
to achieve success. The four years before the Olympics constitute
the cycle in which each next season is some kind of a test before
the target event in London.
While entering the head office of POLANIK we can see the
javelin with your autograph. Is the cooperation with the
company satisfying to you?
I have been cooperating with POLANIK for several years. I’m glad
that I have a chance to compete and train in the colours of the
company. Frankly speaking, was it not for Polanik, I wouldn’t have
literally any training equipment. It’s hard to believe, but it’s true.
Thanks to them, I’m provided not only with the throwing
implements but also with other athletics equipment, and it is the
world class equipment. I hope that next seasons will turn out
to be great for both, me and the company.
What makes javelins produced by Polanik so special?
In my opinion, the javelins made by Polanik stand out from those
manufactured by other international companies because there is
a wide range of them, so you are able to choose a right product for
your needs. Beginning with typical training javelins with a low level
of hardness, then medium hardness javelins and finally
competition javelins with very high stiffness. Athletes with various
training experience and different levels of motricity and technique
can find right javelins for trainings and for competitions.

Full Carbon Premium Line javelins
The decades of our company’s experience in the javelin production have been capped by Full Carbon competition javelins. Those master class javelins have come into
being as the result of the two-year work and personal commitment of the company’s founder, Wieslaw Szczepanik. In the production there have been used extremely
durable carbon fibres and special kinds of resins which vastly increase the javelins' rigidity. That lessens the vibrations during flight and guarantees farther throws. Thus
Polanik company has joined the selective group of the few producers from all over the world who make carbon fibre javelins. The Polanik Full Carbon javelins are the next
products added to the Premium Line which came into existence along with creating excellent class Ziolkowski Hammers.

Athens 2004
The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad were held in Athens from
August 13th to August 29th, 2004. Over 10500 participants from
202 countries competed in 28 different sports disciplines and 301
sets of medals were presented. The Greek President Konstantinos
Stefanopulos opened the Games. The Greek windsurfer,
the Olympic gold medallist in Atlanta, Nikolaos Kaklamanakis
lit the Olympic torch.
Athens was declared the official host of the 2004 Olympic Games
on September 5th in 1997 defeating Buenos Aires, Cape Town,
Rome and Stockholm. Before Athens had lost its opportunity to
organize the 1996 Summer Olympics. The capital of Greece hosted
the first Summer Olympic Games of the modern era exactly
100 years earlier, so that would have been a great opportunity
to celebrate the anniversary. However that privilege was given
to Atlanta then.
Traditionally the Games had two official mascots: Athena - the
goddess of wisdom and Phevos - the god of light and music.
The official logo was designed on the pattern of olive branch
wreath, that was presented to ancient Olympic champions. Also
its colours had their meaning: white and blue complied with
the colours of the Greek flag.
All the competitions took place on the Olympic Stadium of Athens.
Only the shot put event was held in the stadium of Olympia.
The marathon was held on the historic route from Marathon to
Athens, with the finish line at the Panathinaikos stadium, which
hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896.
The athletics fans could not complain on the lack of the sports
emotions. Kelly Holmes from Great Britain won the competition of
800 m and 1500 m races and became the third athlete in
the history who did it. The Ethiopian Kenenis Bekele reached for
the gold medal in 10 000 m race and had the chance to become one
of the greatest long distance runners, if he had won also 5000 m
race. After all he had to acknowledge the Moroccan veteran's
victory, the marathon runner, Hichama el Guerrouja who had
already won also the 1500 m race and as the second runner in
the history became the double gold medallist in both distances.
Among Poles the triumph belonged to Robert Korzeniowski, who
did not disappoint his fans and won the 50 km race walking. Anna
Rogowska perfectly performed winning the bronze medal in
the pole vault competition.
The hurdles of our company, showing proudly the Polanik logo,
were present at the XXVIII Summer Olympic Games.
The total number of 46 athletics events was held in Athens:
24 men's and 22 women's.

Polish Athletics Medals: gold
Joanna Wisniewska - discus throw
To achieve a success one has to work
hard for many years. Some people
may become successful at
the beginning of their careers, some
when their careers are heading to
an end. You gained the European
Championships medal after 20 years
of competing at stadiums all over
the world. Do athletes loose hope
when they fail being sometimes so
close to a victory?
20 years of my career have been full
of hard work, sacrifices, triumphs and failures. That has shaped
my personality. Now I know my needs and abilities. It is really
tough for athletes to keep going in their careers when the first
success is something you must wait for. There are athletes who
achieve it fast and also those whom time just gets on nerves.
Everything is possible, and gaining something requires faith and
hard work. I can say that I have withstood the test.
You were the 10th in Athens. Is it a satisfying result to you?
Oh, it was 7 years ago! Let me think for a second… yes, the girls
had pretty far throws. A Russian athlete won, she threw 67 m.
I, in the long list of the finalists, eventually ended up at the 10th
place. Taking into consideration some organization difficulties
I think my performance was "could have been better".
In your twenty-year career you have been using various types
of discuses. Does that small object change or is still the same?
They haven’t lost their parameters but have gained the look.
With the passing of time wood has been replaced by plastic,
carbon fibre or aluminium. As for me, traditional wooden discuses
are rather the equal of new plastic ones. Their weight hasn’t
changed so the only thing is how it feels in hand.
What is the condition of the Polish athletics in your opinion?
Frankly speaking, the level of the Polish athletics is rather
average. We have several exceptionally talented athletes but
I don't think it’s enough to talk about a high level in that sport.
Unfortunately, too few juniors achieve a high level when they
become seniors. I believe we should devote more attention
to those athletes who have potential and are constantly handling
with a difficult financial situation in their clubs. In addition,
the climatic conditions in our country aren’t working for our
advantage. Winter and low temperatures last during most of
the preparatory period. In Poland, only the Olympic Sports Centre
in Spala offers comparative conditions to an open-air facility for
training long throws in winter. Therefore the best one can do
during that period is visiting countries with a warmer climate.

Sydney 2000
The millennium Games of the XXVII Olympiad were held in Sydney
between 15th of September and 1st of October, 2000. The total of
10 651 participants from 199 countries competed in 28 sports
disciplines. In Sydney 300 sets of medals were given to the
competitors. The Sydney governor William Dean announced the
opening of the Games and the athlete Cathy Freeman lit the
Olympic torch.
Despite the preceding numerous protests of Aborigines, who
wanted to draw the world’s attention to their difficult social
situation, the President of the International Olympic Committee
Juan Antonio Samaranch triumphantly announced that the XXVII
Olympic Games were the greatest in the history, and the record
numbers of: participating countries, athletes, sports and
competitions were the confirmation of these words.
Sydney won the right to host the Games on 24th September in 1993,
in Monaco. Sydney defeated Beijing, Berlin, Istanbul and
Manchester.
The official mascots chosen for the 2000 Summer Olympics were
representatives of the Australian fauna: the Platypus named Syd for
"Sydney", the Echidna named Millie for "Millennium" and
the Kookaburra Olly named for "Olympics". They were designed by
Matt Hatton and Jozef Szekeres. The Olympic medals were
designed by the Polish sculptor Wojciech Pietranik.
All athletics competitions could have been admired at the Stadium
Australia - the main Olympic arena , the part of the Sydney Olympic
Park.
The return to the Antipodes after 44 years from the Games in
Melbourne might have been considered fully successful if only
the weather had been better. Sydney welcomed the athletes with
cool and damp aura, which affected the athletes' results. The star,
Marion Jones, who was expected to win five gold medals, won "only"
three (100, 200 and 4 x 400), and two bronze medals (long jump and
4 x 100). Marion was bravely supported by her colleague Michael
Johnson, who added to his collection two gold medals in the 400 m
race and the 4 x 400 m relay race. The rainy weather did not disturb
long distance runners from Africa. The Kenyans won gold medals in
the 1500 m race - Noah Kiprono and in the 3000 m steeplechase race
- Reuben Seroney. Millon Wolde won the 5000 m distance, Haile
Gebrselassie took the first place in the 10000 m race and Gezhange
Aber won the marathon - all the representatives of Ethiopia. All
Australians enjoyed the Cathy Freeman's victory, who won
the 400m race. The Aborigine, who was the 2nd in Atlanta and felt
dispirited, was the best in front of her own audience.
Jan Zelezny and Steve Backley fought a very thrilling duel in
the javelin throw. Finally the Czech was 32 cm better than his rival
and beat him throwing 90,17 m. The Polish team performed very
well. Robert Korzeniowski preparing to the 50 km race walking
started in the 20 km race just for a "warm up" and ... he won. And
then he reached for his second gold medal in the 50 km race. Two of our hammer throwers, 18-year-old Kamila Skolimowska and
Szymon Ziolkowski also did their best. Kamila as the only one
exceeded the distance of 70 m (71,16) and Szymon 80 m (80,04),
that was enough to gain two gold medals.
During the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, for the first time the women’s
pole vault and hammer throw competitions occurred. In Sydney
there were held 46 events in athletics: 24 men's and 22 women's.
Szymon Ziolkowski - hammer throw
- What more could Szymon Ziolkowski ask
for? You have won the most titles of all
Polish athletes and have gained a lot of
medals, including the most valuable one the gold Olympic medal. You can consider
yourself as a fulfilled athlete. But a real
fighter always set himself new targets.
What is Szymon Ziolkowski aiming for
now?
- First I must disagree with you, because I’m
sure that in Poland there are at least several
athletes that have won more titles than I have, and who are a way
better than me. But I haven’t stopped trying! And about setting
myself a target, there is always something you can aim for. It’s just
the way it is with athletes! In my collection I haven’t got
the European Champion medal yet - it would be better if it were
gold, of course. And the competition for the name of the best
on The Old Continent takes place in Helsinki in 2012.
- You are the most titled athlete among those who still take
part in competitions. And we wish you further successes,
including the next Olympic medal. But to add another gold to
your collection you need good equipment. Ziolkowski
Hammer is a line of products made by Polanik. Why have you
decided to cooperate with that widely-known Polish producer
of athletics equipment?
There were many reasons why we have decided on that
innovative concept. The Polanik company has been making
world-top-standard products for many years. In my sports
discipline, I have seen their equipment in various places all over
the world, so an opportunity has emerged to link the popularity
with promotion and creating a line of hammers signed by me.
The line was eagerly accepted by my colleagues.
- When did you use a hammer made by them for the first time?
- It was at the National Junior Championships that were held in
Kielce, 1992. I have been using their equipment ever since,
including the Olympic Games in Sydney. It was a great privilege
for me when, this year Ziolkowski Hammer line has been used
during the World Championships in Daegu.
- Sydney must have been a double lack for you, hasn’t it?
Kamila Skolimowska and Szymon Ziolkowski were the two
Polish sensations on the Games. I guess no one expected it,
including you and Kamila.
- Definitely yes, it was a huge surprise! Two Poles have won gold. It
was phenomenal especially in case of Kamila because she wasn’t
even 18 that time. Regrettably, Kamila is not among us any more,
but Anita Wlodarczyk has been continuing what Kamila started.

Atlanta 1996
The Games of the XXVI Olympiad were held in Atlanta, from July
19th to August 4th, 1996.
The total of 10 318 competitors from 197 countries competed in 26
sports disciplines and 318 sets of medals were given to the
participants. The President of USA Bill Clinton announced the
opening of the Games and the Olympic torch was lit by the boxer
Muhammad Ali.
Atlanta was declared the official host of the 1996 Olympic Games
on September 18th in 1990 during the IOC session in Tokyo.
Atlanta was selected from six cities, it defeated Belgrade,
Manchester, Melbourne, Toronto and "the biggest looser" Athens,
which wanted to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first
modern era Olympics held in Greece in 1896.
The mascot for the Olympics was named Izzy - the first mascot
designed by the computer. The name of the abstract fantasy
object came from question: "What is it?", because nobody actually
knew what or who was Izzy.
The events of the Games were held at various arenas, including
the Centennial Olympic Stadium, which was the place where
the bomb exploded on July 27th. There were 2 people killed and
112 injured. Although the Olympics were marred by the terrorist
bombing, the Olympic spirit was not broken and the Games were
continued.
The athletes became the heroes of the Games, especially
sprinters. The American Donovan Bailey won the men's 100 m
with the great time of 9,84 s. Michael Johnson was even more
popular, because he was the first in three events: in 200 m, 400 m
and relay 4 x 400 m. Moreover he established the 200 m new
world record: 19,32 s.
The Frenchwoman Marie Jose Perec turned to be the Johnson's
female counterpart. The gold medallist in the 400 m race
in Barcelona won the 200 m and 400 m races.
There were 44 athletics events in the Olympics: 24 men's and
20 women's.
Poles did not take part in the shot put competition.

Barcelona 1992
The Games of the XXV Olympiad took place in Barcelona, from
July 25th to August 9th in 1992. It was the first Olympiad in Spain.
There were teams from 169 national Olympic committees.
The total number of 9367 participants competed in the 257 events
of the 25 sports disciplines. His Majesty King Juan Carlos I
announced the opening of the Games and the Olympic torch
was lit by the archer Antonio Rebollo.
During the 91st IOC Session, which was held in Lausanne on
October 17th in 1986, Barcelona was selected among Amsterdam,
Belgrade, Birmingham, Brisbane and Paris.
The main arena of the Games was the stadium located on
the Montjuic Hill.
The dog called Cobi was the official mascot of the Olympics. It was
designed by the Spanish designer Javier Mariscal.
The athletes achieved many successes: the American jumper Carl
Lewis for the third time proved to be the best in the long jump. The
British sprinter Lindford Christie won the 100 m race with
the result of 9,96 s. The Algerian runner Hassiba Boulmerk won
the 1500 m event and caused the same great euphoria in her
country as 8 years earlier Nawal El Moutawakel did in Morocco
after her Olympic success.
The African runners were mainly predicted to win medium and
long distance races, but there were some Europeans who changed
their plans. The German Dieter Baumann unexpectedly won
the 5000 m race, and the Spanish athlete Fermin 'Cacho' Ruiz took
the first place in the 1500 m race with a dynamic finish.
The beautiful accent ended the women’s 10000 m race.
The Ethiopian Deratu Tulu overtook Elena Meyer from South
Africa. After the race Meyer heartily congratulated the winner.
The Polish national athletics team brought back only one medal
from Barcelona. Artur Partyka won the bronze medal in the high
jump event.
There were 43 athletics events: 24 men's and 19 women's.

Polish Athletics Medals: bronze
Artur Partyka - high jump
Jan Huruk - marathon
- You have been the greatest marathon runner in the Polish
history. Although the 7th place at the Olympic Games was an
amazing result, you didn’t gain any medal. Has the marathon
been your deliberate choice or, as it usually happens among
athletes, a random one?
- It has been both, deliberate and random. In June, 1988,
I participated in a road race that was held in Darmstadt, Germany.
The distance was 6800 m and I competed with the group of quite
good runners from Kenya, Ethiopia and Germany. I ended up
the 2nd and I got the reward of 1500 DM. The manager who was
organizing the marathon in Duisburg noticed me and offered
the participation in that race. I was supposed to be paid 500 DM
just for taking part in it. After a short consideration, I decided to
accept his offer. I started in the race and won, additionally earning
a good deal of money. That was when I decided that the marathon
would be my main sports discipline.
- The athlete from Piotrkow Piotr Stepien also took part in
the Games in Barcelona and he gained the only Olympic medal
(silver) in the history of the city. Did you get on well with other
sportswomen and sportsmen in the Olympic village? Are
Olympians really - as it is often said - like one big family or are
they more focused on themselves and their own success?
- In every Olympic village there are missions where all
competitors meet. We were indeed one big family, we supported
each other and were excited about performances of athletes,
boxers, wrestlers or pentathlonists. Everyday representatives of
different sports met each other.
- The boom in running has been for some time in Poland.
People at different ages have started to participate in mass 10
km races, half marathons or even marathons. It has become
something like a way of living. You must be happy about it.
- There is only one thing that bothers me: unfortunately that new
tendency is not so popular among the youth. However I’m glad
that pensioners, including retired athletes, are going in for
the recreational running and those retired runners, who believe
that it is actually a great way of living, instil the idea into others.

Seoul 1988
The Games of the XXIV Olympiad were held in Seoul, from
September 17th to October 2nd in 1988. In the Games 159 nations
were represented by 8465 participants, who competed in 237
events of 23 sports disciplines. The President of South Korea Roe
Tae Woo officially opened the Games and the Olympic torch was lit
by the athletes: Chung Sun-man, Kim Won-tak and Sohn Michung.
Seoul was chosen to host the Summer Games on September 30th
in 1981 in Baden-Baden. It defeated the Japanese rival, the City of
Nagoya.
The official mascot for the 1988 Summer Olympic Games was
Hodori. It was a stylized tiger designed by Kim Hyun, expressing
the friendly and hospitable traditions of the Korean people.
The name Hodori was chosen from over 2000 suggestions sent in
by the public. The first part of the name "ho" was taken from
the Korean word for "horangi", which means "tiger", and the
second part "dori" is a diminutive for "boys" in Korean. The female
version of the mascot was called Hosuni.
The stadium which was designed by Kim Swoo Geun hosted
the athletics events. The lines of the stadium's profile imitate
the elegant curves of a Korean Joseon Dynasty porcelain vase.
The main athletics hero unfortunately became… an antihero.
The Canadian Ben Johnson won the 100 m race with the new world
record (9,79 s), but he was disqualified after he tested positive for
forbidden doping. The gold medal went to Carl Lewis.
Sergiej Bubka won his only gold Olympic medal in the pole vault
event. The best pole vaulter ever, who established 35 world records
(including 18 indoor records) for 14 years, did not have luck in
the Games until Seoul.
There were 42 athletics events: 24 men's and 18 women's.

Agata Karczmarek - long jump
- You started as a gymnast, representing our
country even in the Olympic Games held
in Moscow. And later you went in for
a different sports discipline: athletics. Why?
- Our gymnastics coach’s husband was Jerzy
Fidusiewicz, athletics instructor. I was 17 and
didn’t want to end my career so soon, so I
listened to him and went in for … high jump.
By accident I went to Germany to take part in
the high jump competition. It turned out that
there was not a high jump event but only a long jump event. I took
part. The following year I spent contesting in both athletics
events, it was the long jump event which I turned out to be better
at, and it remained like that.
- For many years the long jump had been attracting attention
during athletics competitions because of fantastic results of
such athletes as: Bob Beamon in Mexico in 1968 or Mike Powell
and Carl Lewis in 1991. There were great results among
women, too, in 80’s or 90’s. Since 1988 no woman has broken
the world record. Your national record from 1988 (6,97) hasn’t
been broken, too. Today, you would be among the world
leaders in that event. Why are we dealing with such
a stagnation in long jump now?
- I don’t want it to sound unfair, but it was not until 90’s that
someone took care of doping among athletes. Of course, results
could be easily discredited, but there were few cases when
athletes were taken away of their medals because of drugs. In 80’s
or 90’s, 7 m in the long jump was nothing special, today it is just
the other way around. At the Olympic Games in Atlanta I made
3 attempts, over 7 m each, but all of them were said to be invalid.
If they had validated one of my jumps, and in my opinion they
should have, I would have gained a medal. But I ended up being
6th in rank. I’m not saying that it is impossible to jump well today,
but to jump on a record level one needs to depend on a lot of
factors such as perfect weather and perfect form.
- You were 7th in Seoul and you also participated in Moscow,
Barcelona and Atlanta. How do you remember the Olympic
Games, in general?
- They were fantastic! After all, it was a time of my youth.
Certainly, all the Olympics were different, they have been
evolving. Now, there are more Olympic sports and the Olympic
movement is constantly flourishing. As for me, the reason why
those events are so wonderful is that all the athletes are gathered
together in the Olympic village. I think that in spite of
the commercialization, the movement hasn’t lost its values and
the IOC takes care of the perfect organization and prestige of
the Olympic Games.

Los Angeles 1984
The Games of the XXIII Olympiad took place in Los Angeles, from
July 28th to August 12th in 1984. It was the second Olympic event
organized in Los Angeles. There were 6797 participants from 140
countries. There were 221 sports events of 21 sports disciplines.
The opening of the Games was announced by the President of
the USA Ronald Reagan and the Olympic torch was lit by the
athlete Rafer Johnson.
In response to the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer
Olympics in Moscow, the Soviet Union boycotted the Games. It
was followed by: Bulgaria, the GDR, Vietnam, Mongolia,
Czechoslovakia, Laos and Afghanistan. The athletes from other
communistic countries, such as: Poland, Cuba, Ethiopia, North
Korea and Hungary, were made to do similarly. All those countries
organized their own series of the athletics competition which were
called "Friendship Games-84".
Poles did not compete in the Olympic Games in Los
Angeles because of the boycott, but they took part in the
alternative competition Friendships Games - 84.
The events took place in 9 countries of the Eastern block:
USSR, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, North Korea, Cuba,
Mongolia, the GDR, Hungary and Poland. The dates of
the events were specially selected and they were not in
conflict with the dates of the Olympic Games. Thus
sportsman and sportswomen from the countries which did
not boycott the Games in Los Angeles could take
part in the Friendship Games - 84 as well. Overall
the competition was attended by 2300 participants from
50 countries.
The opening ceremony took place at Moscow's Luzhniki
stadium, as it was during the Olympic Games in 1980.
The tournament of men’s athletics was held in ZSRR,
women competed in Czechoslovakia.
Only Los Angeles and New York were interested in organizing
the event. Due to the fact that only one city from the country may
apply for the organization of the Games, the United States
Olympic Committee chose Los Angeles.
The mascot was Sam, the Olympic Eagle designed by Walt Disney.
The Eagle wore the outfit of the legendary American Uncle Sam,
with a star-spangled background in red, white and blue, which is
the symbol of the United States.
The main arena of the Games was the stadium Los Angeles
Memorial Coliseum, it was also used during the Games in 1932.
The greatest personality of the Los Angeles Olympics was
the American Carl Lewis. In a very impressive style he won four
gold medals in the events: 100 m, 200 m, 4 x 100 m and long jump.
All the four victories, counting heats, finals, and jumps took him ...
146 seconds. Lewis repeated the legendary Jesse Owens’
achievement of 1936 after almost fifty years. For some time the
stadium was renamed to "Lewiseum" by reporters.
The Moroccan runner Nawal El Moutawakel took the first place in
the 400 m hurdles and she became the first African Muslim woman
who won the gold Olympic medal and it was also the first medal
for her country.
Sports fans also remember the famous battle between two
decathletes the German Juergen Hingsen and the British Daley
Thompson. Thompson won and repeated his success from
Moscow.
Ulrike Meyfarth triumphed in the high jump competition. In 1972
the German athlete as a 16-year-old girl won the high jump event
in Munich and was the youngest gold medallist. In Los Angeles she
was the oldest winner.
The unusual episode took place at the final stage of the marathon.
The Swiss athlete Gabriele Andersen – Scheiss fainted 400 m
before the finish line. When the doctors checked that she was
breathing, they let her continue the race, because they wanted to
avoid the disqualification. Although it took the 39-year-old athlete
5,44 minutes to run the rest of the distance, she reached the finish
line.
The "record holder" of the Olympic Games was also the chairman
of the organizing committee, Peter Ueberroth. The businessman
made private companies finance entirely the Olympics and he
made the Games generate the profit of $ 223 million. To achieve
that he used unusual solutions, for example the Olympic
swimming pool built at the cost of $ 4 million was financed by ...
Mc Donald's.
There were 41 athletics events: 24 men's and 17 women's.
The level of the competition was high, and the results
obtained in some sports disciplines were better than those
in Los Angeles.
In the 28 events of the 41 athletics competitions
the athletes obtained higher scores, for example Marlies
Gohr in the 100 m event and Uwe Hohn in the javelin throw.
During the competition the athletes improved many world
records.
In 2006 it was proposed that the medallists of
the "Friendship Games - 84" should have the same rights as
the Olympic medallists had. In 2007 on February 19th
the President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczynski
signed the law which granted them the Olympic privileges.

Moscow 1980
The Games of the XXII Olympiad were held in Moscow, from July
19th to August 3rd in 1980. There were 203 sports events.
The participants from 81 countries, all together 5283
representatives, competed in 21 sports disciplines.
The General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev announced the opening of
the Games and the Olympic torch was lit by the basketball player
Sergei Belov.
The only two cities applied for the Olympics: Moscow and Los
Angeles. Moscow was chosen on 23rd October in 1974 in Vienna.
The mascot was Misha, the Russian bear. He was designed by
the famous children's books illustrator Victor Chizhikov. Misha
became very popular not only in the USSR but also on
the international arena.
The Games were held at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow.
The pole vault competition engraved strongly in the spectators’
memory for a long time. The organizers and supporters who were
present at the Luzhniki stadium wanted Konstantin Volkov to win
the event. That was why the stadium gates were opened and
closed to change the direction of the wind and the audience
responded with whistles when the Volkov’s rivals were jumping.
Immediately after Kozakiewicz secured his gold medal, he
responded with an bent elbow gesture. Since then that gesture has
been referred to as "Kozakiewicz's gesture". Slusarski and Volkov
took the second place.
The medium distance favorites were the British. Steve Ovett
seemed to be a candidate to the victory in the 1500 m race and
Sebastian Coe in the 800 m event. In practice Ovett won the 800 m
and Coe was the first in the 1500 m.
Waldemar Cierpinski from the German Democratic Republic (East
Germany) won his second consecutive Olympic gold medal in
the marathon.
In the high jump competition the little-known Gerd Wessig fought
a very exciting duel for the Olympic championship with Jacek
Wszola. Finally the German athlete won the competition with
the Polish jumper by 1 cm with the result of 2,36 m, which was
the new world record at that time.
Bronislaw Malinowski proofed to be the highest class athlete in
the 3000 m steeplechase. His main rival Filibert Bayi from Tanzania
was 80 m ahead before him in the middle of the race. Malinowski
kept calm and did not change his own pace. Eventually he
overtook his rival from Tanzania and won the race with the great
result 8:09,7.
There were 38 athletics events: 24 men’s and 14 women’s.

Leszek Dunecki - 4 x 100 m
- You had pretty good results in long jump but you decided to go
in for running. Why?
- They wanted me to become the Olympic champion in long jump too
soon. When I trained long jump, I also ran fast 100 m, so the transition
from long jump to sprints was natural.
- If you are a son of the national champion, do you have to follow
his footsteps? Was the athlete gene strong enough to make you
go in for sports or was it your own conscious decision?
- Since my childhood I have had athletics predispositions. I come
from Torun so I used to be a keen hockey player, but for some reasons
I ended up as an athlete, which I suppose was a good decision.
- How do you remember the Olympic Games in Moscow?
The period between 1980 and 1984 was a time of making
the Olympics more and more bound to the politics. Did it influence
the atmosphere in the stadium, the Olympic village or on
the track?
- For us it was funny and scary at the same time. Although the case of
the politics in the Olympics was something you could have read or
heard about, but for us it was not so discernible in the atmosphere of
the Olympics as one could expect. However, it was quite an
experience, especially for me because it was my first participation
in the Olympics.
- In Moscow, Poland gained 32 medals, including 7 in athletics.
Wladyslaw Kozakiewicz, a pole vaulter, gained one of the two
gold medals. He broke the world record and made the famous
gesture in front of the soviet spectators. Is it true that there were
heard instant whistles from the audience while non-natives,
including Polish athletes, were on the start?
- They were unsupportive for everybody, not only for Poles but also
for the French, for instance. Generally speaking, for every non-native
athlete. But we had our quiet revenge when we gathered in a small
group and were whistling during the Russian performances. As for
Kozakiewicz, the political impact on the Olympic Games was visible
also later, because the pole vault victory ceremony of the medallists
was postponed to the next day.
- You, Zwolinski, Licznerski and Woronin formed a great team
together at that time. You gained many medals. The relay race is
based on cooperation among the team members. Even though
there is a leader, all the members have to be unbelievably
mentally strong. Every detail counts. Today athletes can talk to
psychologists, while earlier you were totally on your own. How
was it working out for you?
- We supported each other very strongly. There was no yelling at each
other when something didn’t go according to the plan. But when it
came to the most important events, things did work out good for us.
The reason was that we used to spent much time together and also
because we were training separately, with different coaches. That
added a little bit of competition to our relations. Above all we realized
that we could have achieved more as a relay team than separately.
- Few years later Poland used to have another great relay team,
"Lisowczycy" as they were called from their coach's name, to
which a sprinter Piotr Rysiukiewicz belonged, who is associated
with POLANIK today. What can be done so that we could have
more such successful runners as Dunecki, Woronin or
Rysiukiewicz?
- First of all the choices of candidates need to be more well-thought,
based on selection rather than coincident. There has to be chosen
a pretty big group of people, from which each year someone is turned
down until there are 5-6 potential athletes left. Our success was
a result of being in the same team for a very long time.

Montreal 1976
The Games of the XXI Olympiad took place in Montreal, from July
17th to August 1st in 1976. There were 6028 participants from 92
nations. They competed in 198 events of 21 sports disciplines.
The Queen Elizabeth II announced the opening of the Games and
the Olympic torch was lit by the athletes Sandra Henderson and
Stephane Prefontaine.
Montreal was chosen to host the Games on May 12th in 1970 in
Amsterdam. It defeated Moscow and Los Angeles
The Olympic Stadium was built especially for the Games in one
of the Montreal’s districts.
The mascot of the Games in Montreal was a beaver called Amik.
The name was taken from the most popular language amongst
the American Indians in Canada. "Amik" means a beaver and is
the symbol of hard work.
In the triple jump competition Viktor Saneyev won his third victory.
The Cuban athlete Alberto Juantorena became the first runner
who won 400 m and 800 m at the Olympics. The Finnish runner
Lasse Viren won 5000 m and 10000 m.
The Hungarian Miklos Nemeth won the javelin throw competition.
His father Imre Nemeth was the winner in the same event during
the London Olympic Games in 1948. It was the first time when
the gold medallist's son repeated his father success.
Irena Szewinska won her seventh medal and established the new
world record in the 400 m event.
The high jumper Jacek Wszola and the pole vaulter Tadeusz
Slusarski enjoyed their gold Olympic medals and their victories
were celebrated in Poland.
There were 37 athletics events: 23 men's and 14 women's.
Athletics Gold Medallists
Grazyna Rabsztyn - 100 m hurdles
- T h e w o r l d r e c o r d h o l d e r,
the current Polish record holder, one
of the best athletes in the history,
the multi-medallist at the European
Championships... Although in
June 1980, a few weeks before
the Olympics, you broke the world
record, you did not manage to win
a medal in Moscow. How come? - There were many reasons. During
the Olympic Games in Montreal in
1976, I was languishing with tonsillitis
and in Moscow, in 1980, I wasn’t prepared properly. Few weeks
before I set the new world record with the result of 12,36 but after
that, for several weeks I was recovering from an injury. I have had
the trauma up till now. It was not caused by my participation in
Moscow, but the reason was the last sports camp. I have to admit,
with a bit of embarrassment, that it wasn’t organized
professionally. There were no masseurs , no medical advice, and
additionally the food was awful. I truly regret that I didn’t have
enough strength and energy to fight for better conditions there.
So, my 5th place in the Moscow final I consider rather as a success,
especially because I was thinking about resigning from taking part
in it. However, despite the fact that I didn’t gain any Olympic
medal I feel satisfied with all that I have achieved in athletics.
- Polanik hurdles can be seen very often at top level athletics
events all over the world. There is also a wide range of other
Polanik products, which are used by the best. In your opinion,
what is the main factor that has brought the company from
a small town like Piotrkow to such a success on the market?
- Persistence and determination are crucial, for sure. When at
the international championships I saw the logo of POLANIK on
the equipment, I felt proud. It’s great that it is the Polish company
that makes such high-quality products.
- How would you assess quality changes in the equipment that
have been taking place during the last 30 - 40 years? For
instance, Polanik hurdles, which could have been noticed at
the high level competitions in 1997?
- In my day, hurdles were not friendly to the athletes. Contacts
with hurdles during races were quite unpleasant and many times
they ended with bruises or more serious injuries. The hurdles that
are used today, especially those from Polanik, are aesthetic, made
of good materials and easy to use.

Munich 1972
The Games of the XX Olympiad took place in Munich, from August
26th to September 11th in 1972.
There were 7123 participants from 121 countries. They competed in
195 events of 21 sports disciplines. The President of the West
Germany Gustaw Heinemann announced the opening of
the Games. The Olympic torch was lit by the athlete Guenter Zan.
Munich was chosen to host the Olympics on April 26th in 1966
in Rome. It defeated Detroit, Madrid and Montreal.
The Munich Games stayed in the memory as the place of
the terrorist attack. The group of the Palestinian terrorists
attacked the Olympic village and took the Israeli athletes hostage.
As the result of that aggression and the inefficient police action to
save the hostages, the people were killed: 11 Israelis, a German
police officer, a German pilot and 5 terrorists. For a few hours it
seemed that the Olympics would be discontinued, and only
the Avery Brundage's famous words: "The Games must go on"
dispelled the fears.
Waldi was the first official Olympic mascot. He was a dachshund,
in the colours: blue, orange and green.
The main arena of the Games was the Olympic Stadium in Munich,
located in the central part of the Olympic Park.
There were 38 athletics events: 24 men's and 14 women's.

Teresa Nowak (Nikitin) - 100 m hurdles
- Your career started in Concordia,
a sports club from Piotrkow. How do
you recall that period?
- Although it was so long ago,
the memories are very nice. Once my
physical education teacher, who was also
my form mistress, took me and my
friends to the stadium. It was first year of
the secondary school, I was 14. She
tested our abilities and I turned out to be
the best, so they offered me training in
Concordia. There were only enthusiasts in
that club, including coaches: Niedzielski
and Laskowski. And that way my adventure with athletics begun.
- Nowadays, in Piotrkow, only POLANIK represents athletics on
a high level. There are no athletes who would follow in your
footsteps. What could be done in order to take advantage
of the great potential like the internationally known company?
What can we do to admire achievements of local athletes again?
- A problem with intake exists everywhere. Today, young people very
often go in for football rather than athletics. There is a need for
someone who will take care of candidates, who will create a group.
On the other hand, if people really want to train, they will manage
without help. I think that if an interesting idea or a proposition
emerges, POLANIK company will offer their help and the condition
of the athletics in Piotrkow will get better.
- When thinking about the Olympic Games in Munich people have in
mind mainly two things: 7 gold medals gained by the Polish
participants, including athletics, and the tragic events associated
with the attack of the Palestinian terrorists. How do you remember
the Olympics? Is it the time of great emotions, and good results
or the tragedy of the terrorist attack that engraved in your mind?
- The time before the Olympics was pretty tough for me because of my
Achilles tendon injury. Secondly there was a strong competition in
the country. There were 4 candidates for the Olympics in Munich, and
only 3 of them could qualify. Fortunately I became one of them and
I was happy for that. Although I turned out to be the best among the
Polish participants, I didn’t win any medal. I was 5th, but it was
a great time of the GDR athletes. I wasn’t satisfied then, because
I wished for some medals, but today after all these years, when
I look at it from different perspective, I appreciate what I achieved.
And about the terrorist attack - I think it cast a shadow over
the Olympic Games. The joyful atmosphere changed immediately
after the attack. I found out about the tragic event at noon, a day after
it had happened. The attack had taken place before I entered
the event. That was why I was watching TV very nervously and I was
waiting for the official decision of carrying on the Olympics. I know that
it may sound a bit egoistic now, but my first thought at that particular
moment, was that If I hadn’t had the chance to take part in
the Olympics, it would have been very hard for me.

Mexico City 1968
The Games of the XIX Olympiad took place in Mexico City, from
October 12th to October 27th in 1968. There were 5530 participants
from 122 countries. They competed in 172 events of 18 sports
disciplines. The Mexican President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz announced
the opening of the Games. The athlete Norma Enriqueta Basilio de
Sotelo lit the Olympic torch.
On October 18th in 1963 in Baden-Baden Mexico City was selected
to host the Olympics. It defeated Detroit, Buenos Aires and Lyon.
The stadium Estadio Olímpico Universitario was the arena of
the athletics competition. The altitude and its synthetic track surface
were two main factors which could influence the results, so they were
important to the athletics teams. The rarefied air of Mexico City
situated at the altitude of 2300 m above the sea level contained 30%
less oxygen than the air in lowlands, but that also meant less
resistance for competitors. In addition it was the first time when
synthetic surface was used on the tracks and runways of the Olympic
stadium. It had a significant influence on the reached results.
A lot of records were improved during the Games: Lee Evans won
the 400 m with the result of 43,8 s, the American relay team 4 x 400
reached 2:56,1 and Tom "Jet" Smith won the 200 m in 19,83 s.
Tom "Jet" Smith and another American athlete John Carlos went
down in history, because during the victory ceremony they raised
their black-gloved fists as a protest against the discrimination of
the African Americans. They were disqualified for that gesture.
The 23-year-old American Bob Beamon made an improbable feat: in
the long jump competition he reached 8,90 m. Beamon improved the
long jump record, which had been improved by only 22 cm during 33
years, in one jump by 55 cm. The result remained at the top of the
tables for 23 years and in 1991 Mike Powell jumped only 5 cm more.
Richard Fosbury presented the totally new jumping technique
in the high jump competition. The Californian jumped over the
crossbar with his back down, it was called "Fosbury flop". He won with
the result of 2,24 m.
The discus thrower Al Oerter took part in the Games for the fourth
time and won his fourth gold Olympic medal. The Oerter's great
achievement, apart from the representatives of the USA, has not
been repeated by any athlete. Jim Hines became the first sprinter
who officially broke the barrier of 10 seconds in the 100 m event.
There were 36 athletics events: 24 men's and 12 women's.
Athletics Gold Medallists
Urszula Szubzda - 4 x 100 m
- 1968, Mexico City, was a year of
phenomenal results achieved by some
athletes, especially in case of Beamon who
reached 8,90 in long jump. How do you
remember the Olympics? Not only in sports
aspect.
- It was an amazing experience. Mexico is not
only a far-flung corner of the world for us but
also it is a very colourful and fabulous country.
Coming there was a big shock at that time.
- How were Mexicans treating the athletes?
They were treating us, and also people of other
nationalities, as one big family. When we got there they gave
us a very warm welcome. They were singing everywhere, in the city
centre or in the Olympic village, they even greeted us with songs.
Generally speaking, Mexicans appeared to me as very friendly
people. And the Olympics were indeed very special: we had
the Beaomn’s record and, additionally, it was the first time when
Dick Fosbury used the totally new technique in high jump which
later was called "Fosbury flop".
- You achieved more in Munich than in Mexico City, you got into
the finals. Was it the biggest success in your international career?
- Certainly, it was a huge success getting into those finals. Although I
achieved a lot in Poland, for instance a medal in rely race at the
Universidad, the Olympic finals was my greatest achievement.
- How did you feel about the Olympics in Munich after those in
Mexico City?
The differences between them were enormous mainly because of
the culture gap. In Munich everything was organized, while in
Mexico City it was fabulous - people didn’t want to pretend and
make every effort to show themselves to their best advantage. They
didn’t bother about time, they were often late. They didn’t rush but
they always had smiles on their faces.
- 10,93 is the unchallenged national record set by Ewa Kasprzyk
in 1988. Your best result, got years before, was 11,4 (manual
measurement). Why, nowadays, female runners are slower?
And will the phenomenal record made by Griffith-Joyner (10,49)
be eventually broken soon?
- I suppose that it won’t happen soon and I have no idea why
the results aren’t getting better. Perhaps because in comparison
with earlier times, there are few good female sprinters today. But
let’s hope that the era of bad luck will be over and we will be able
to admire a competition on a masterly level, very soon.

Olympic Games in Paris - although our compatriots were
the Olympic team members of the Poland's partitioners
before; at that time 1914 competitors represented Poland
in 25 sports events;
• 1928 – Halina Konopacka, a discus thrower, gained the
first gold medal in the history of the Polish athletics at the
IX Summer Olympic Games in Amsterdam;
• 1964 – Irena Szewinska became the first Polish athlete
who gained 3 medals during one Olympic event. At the
Games of the XVIII Summer Olympics in Tokyo she won
the gold medal in the relay race 4 x 100 m, and two silver
medals: in the 200 m race and the long jump;
