Throughout the first week of August we will be doing activities related to the Olympics, including our own series of Olympic Games on Thursday, August 4. All children are invited to join us as we visit different departments within the DAC and participate in fun competitions. If your child is not regularly scheduled for Thursdays, we would love for them to come join us but ask that a parent stays for the duration of the games. More details to come. Summer is a fun time to be out in the sun and playing, but working with your child on handwriting, recognizing letters and numbers, and reading to them is essential. Working these exercises into your everyday life can be easier than you might think. When you are driving home from school, ask your child how to spell their name and help them out if needed. Engage them with words or letters you see in the world around you, for example in the car or in the grocery store. Ask questions such as, “What letter is that?” or “Do you know the sound that letter makes?” Ask your child to count as high as they can while you are waiting in line. When your child is saying their ABCs, make sure they slow down around L-M-N-O-P – these letters can combine all into one letter. Try to read to your child for at least 15 minutes per day. The more time you read to your child, the better it is for them. Remember everything to your child is a teachable moment. Have fun and enjoy this time with your child! Upcoming field trips include a trip to the park on Monday, August 22 for both classrooms. Look for more details to come! We will also be having our Annual “End of Year” Picnic for our Pre-K students that are leaving us and going into Kindergarten in the fall. On Friday, September 2, we all want to say “See You Later and Good Luck!” Everyone is invited – moms, dads and kiddos that don’t attend on Fridays are welcome to this picnic lunch at the park. This is more than a month away but I wanted to make sure everyone puts sit on the calendar now! Kalina Glover, M.Eed REMINDERS Graduation - If your child is leaving for kindergarten this fall, please let us know what his or her last day will be in writing. 999 Willamette St. Eugene, OR 97401 Tel: (541) 484-4011 Fax: (541) 484-2736 Tax ID# 93-1246961 Toys - Please remember that toys from home need to stay at home or they might get lost at school. On days of Show and Tell/Share, toys are allowed at school but need to stay in their backpack until time for circle. Robot Week - The robots are taking over the Pre-K classroom the first week of September! To help us build our creations, we are asking families to start bringing in materials now. We need toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, shoe boxes, baby food jars and lids (they can be plastic), and anything metal. Threading with beads is a fantastic activity for promoting fine motor development in young children. It requires concentration, thinking skills, encourages the use of the pincer grasp between the thumb and forefinger and naturally strengthens the small hand muscles that are vital for holding a pencil to write with, later on. Using a pipe cleaner to thread onto is a particularly good idea for younger children age 2 and upwards, as it is easier to hold and retains its shape during threading. For this simple activity, set out some pony beads in some little dishes, sorted by color groups (or have your child do this step for extra learning). Then let your child do the rest! Only have healthful alternatives in the house; If the junk food is not there, they cannot eat it. 2. Install consequences; For instance, dessert is not an option unless vegetables have been eaten. 3. Continue to offer healthy varieties as it may take 10-12 tries until a new food is liked. 4. Do not make it a battle, but be firm. Children will eat when hungry. 5. Offer smaller portions at first so that your child can feel like he/she accomplished something. Remember that you are teaching them habits for life so get them involved in the selection, preparation, cooking and serving of food.
