 A MESSAGE FROM MOTHER TERESA 
(WITH AN INTRODUCTION FROM FATHER ARCOLEO)
28 AUGUST 2016
On 4 September 2016, nearly nineteen years after Mother Teresa of
Calcutta was taken home to praise, adore, and love Jesus in Heaven,
she will be officially declared a Saint. And while our monthly
installment for “Friday Family Film Night” for August entitled The
Letters provided all of us with great insight into and inspiration from
her life, much was left unsaid. That is why I strongly encourage anyone
and everyone who longs for Heaven while on earth to spend some
time not only reading words about and from her, but more
importantly, to imitate her and spend some time with the Word Who
became flesh and dwells amongst us in our Perpetual Adoration
Chapel. To aid you in both Saintly labours, I offer you the words of
Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta herself:
“Every Holy Hour we make so pleases the Heart of Jesus that it will be
recorded in Heaven and retold for all eternity. It opens up the
floodgates of God’s merciful Love upon the world.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is the best time you will spend on earth. It will make your soul
everlastingly more glorious and beautiful in Heaven. A Holy Hour of adoration helps bring everlasting peace
to your soul and in your family. It brings us personal peace and strength. It brings us a greater love for Jesus,
for each other, and for the poor. Every holy hour deepens our union with Him and bears much fruit.
Nowhere on earth are we more welcomed or loved than by Jesus in the Eucharist. When you look at the
Crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loved you. When you look at the Sacred Host you understand how
much Jesus loves you now. This is why we need Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration in every Parish throughout
the entire World.
What will convert America and save the world? My answer is prayer. What we need is for every parish to
come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in Holy Hours of prayer. On the Cross Jesus said “I thirst”. From
the Blessed Sacrament Jesus continues to say to each of us “I thirst”. He thirsts for our personal love, our
intimacy, our union with Him in the Blessed Sacrament.
When the Sisters are exhausted, up to their eyes in work;
when all seems to go awry, they spend an hour in prayer
before the Blessed Sacrament. This practice has never failed
to bear fruit: they experience peace and strength.
If you are looking for vocations, as a community have
adoration often every day if possible. Once the Missionaries
of Charity stalled daily adoration, their vocations doubled.
I know I would not be able to work one week if it were not
for that continual force coming from Jesus in the Blessed
Sacrament (during my Holy Hour of Adoration). To be alone
with Jesus in adoration and intimate union with Him is the Greatest Gift of Love - the tender love of Our
Father in Heaven.
Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration offers to our people the opportunity to join those in religious life to pray for
the salvation of the world, souls everywhere and peace on earth. We cannot underestimate the power of
prayer and the difference it will make in our world. Jesus has made Himself the Bread of Life to give us life.
Night and day, He is there.
If you really want to grow in love, come back to the Eucharist, come back to that Adoration. Our hours of
adoration will be special hours of reparation for sins, and intercession for the needs of the whole world,
exposing the sin-sick and suffering humanity to the healing, sustaining and transforming rays of Jesus,
radiating from the Eucharist. Each one of us is a coworker of Christ - we must labor hard to carry Him to the
hearts where He has not yet been known and loved... But, unless we have Jesus, we cannot give Him; that is
why we need the Eucharist. Spend as much time as possible in front of the Blesse d Sacrament and He will fill
you with His strength and His power.
Perpetual adoration is the most beautiful thing you could ever think of
doing. People are hungry for God. Imagine for a moment that we are
living in Jesus’ time and He has invited us to visit with Him and spend
some quiet time getting to know Him better. Being aware who He
was, we would be humbled and honoured by such an invitation. The
good news is that Jesus is here with us TODAY - body, blood, soul and
divinity - in the Holy Eucharist. Although Jesus comes to us under the
appearance of bread and wine, His presence is as real to us NOW as
He was flesh-and-blood-real to His disciples when He walked this
earth. He can perform miracles, heal us, teach us, and love us. We
can talk to Him and He can speak to us through His Word and through
the Holy Spirit Who lives in us through our Baptism and Confirmation.
Jesus has made Himself the Bread of Life to give us life. Night and
day, He is there. If you really want to grow in love, come back to the
Eucharist, come back to that Adoration.”

adoration is the most beautiful thing
you could ever think of doing." 

NOW A WORD ABOUT OUR SAINTS
MORE THAN JUST
A LETTER FROM A DYING MAN
The following letter was written by Alessandro Serenelli: the man who
murdered Saint Maria Goretti. Within its few words are a variety of
messages that are as powerful and poignant today as they were when they
were penned fifty-five years ago.
“I am now almost 80 years old. I am close to the end of my days. Looking
back at my past, I recognize that in my early youth I followed a false road—
an evil path that led to my ruin.
Through the content of printed magazines, immoral shows, and bad
examples in the media, I saw the majority of the young people of my day following evil without even
thinking twice. Unworried, I did the same thing.
There were faithful and practicing Christian believers around me, but I paid no attention to them. I was
blinded by a brute impulse that pushed me down the wrong way of living.
At the age of 20, I committed a crime of passion, the memory of which still horrifies me today. Maria
Goretti, now a Saint, was my good angel whom God placed in my path to save me. Her words both of
rebuke and forgiveness are still imprinted in my heart. She prayed for me, interceding for her killer. Thirty
years in prison followed.
If I had not been a minor in Italian law I would have been sentenced to life in prison. Nevertheless, I
accepted the sentence I received as something I deserved. Resigned, I atoned for my sin. Little Maria was
truly my light, my protectress. With her help, I served those 27 years in prison well.
When society accepted me back among its members, I tried
to live honestly. With angelic charity, the sons of St. Francis,
the minor Capuchins of the Marches, welcomed me among
them not as a servant, but as a brother. I have lived with
them for 24 years. Now I look serenely to the time in which I
will be admitted to the vision of God, to embrace my dear
ones once again, and to be close to my guardian angel, Maria
Goretti, and her dear mother, Assunta.
May all who read this letter of mine desire to follow the
blessed teaching of avoiding evil and following the good.
May all believe with the faith of little children that religion
with its precepts is not something one can do without. Rather, it is true comfort, and the only sure way in
all of life’s circumstances—even in the most painful.”
Peace and all good.
Alessandro Serenelli

SCHOOL’S OUT DRIVE CAREFULLY (both on and off the road)
NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
The eighteen young men who form our fifteenth class have their first day of school this Monday, 29
August. They actually began their De La Salle School experience together this past Thursday evening
when they met their eighth grade big brothers. Part of that evening’s orientation program involved
pairing an eighth grader with a new member of our school community. The older
student is expected to be attentive to the acclimation of the new De La Salle
gentleman into the culture of our school. Such leadership skills are what we aim to inculcate in all
students and this is a special opportunity for the eighth graders to mentor their little brothers. The
parents of our eighth graders were also present and they spoke with the parents of the fifth graders
about the role of parents in the life of the school.
Please join us in prayer for each of the young men entrusted to us and their parents that we might all
enjoy a blessed academic

SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
The great lesson in the words of this Sunday’s Gospel is that of humility: “For everyone who exalts
himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted” (See Luke 14:1, 7-14).
There is no question that Jesus is calling us to be humble. But, what does it mean to be humble?
Some people think that it means to become a mat for everyone and anyone to step on, but this is not
at all what is meant here. If we recognize ourselves as sons or daughters of God we know that we are
wonderfully made in the Image and Likeness of God. But, at the same time, we also know that
everyone else can say the same about themselves. They too are children of God. They too are
wonderfully made. The truly humble does not feel either inferior or superior. We recognize
ourselves as children of God, as brothers and sisters in His great and wonderful family. In his
beautiful book With You Always, Msgr. Francis X Gaeta writes: “This loving humility does not mean
acting like a mole who feels inferior and unimportant.” True humility calls us to see the uniqueness
of all and the fact that we are all brothers and sisters in the family of God.

THE SPIRIT OF GENEROSITY
AND THE MERRICK CAR WASH (1820 SUNRISE HIGHWAY)
Ever since my arrival as Our Holy Redeemer’s tenth Pastor I have experienced and acknowledged the Spirit
of Generosity by which the Church in Freeport lives! That Spirit continues to express itself in new ways, and
in new places as well, such as the Merrick Car Wash located at 1820 Sunrise Highway. The owner of that
carwash (a parishioner of Our Holy Redeemer), nourished at the Altar in our absolutely beautiful church, is
offering bearers of this bulletin page, $3.00 off their car wash! Not only that, a percentage of that sale – in
fact a percentage of EVERY sale – will be sent to Our Holy Redeemer!
Please cut and use the coupons (expire 30 September 2016) below for your next three visits! Make sure
you tell them that Our Holy Redeemer sent you, and let us pray in thanksgiving for the Spirit of Generosity
that not only will help keep our cars clean, but thanks to Our Holy Redeemer, made us clean too!

“WEL-COME HOME TO OUR HOLY REDEEMER”
AN INVITATION FROM FATHER ARCOLEO
Shortly after my arrival on 25 June 2008 as Our Holy Redeemer’s tenth Pastor, I encountered one of the many
reasons that help people who come home to Our Holy Redeemer realize why coming home is what it’s all
about: the Ushers - a group of believers like Michael Bohanan (11:30 A.M.), Pierre Bellanton (8:00 A.M.),
James Parola (9:30 A.M.), Al Nespeca (8:00 A.M.), Edmund Haegle (8:00 A.M., Christmas Midnight Mass, and
10:00 A.M. Waterfront), John Pirro (8:00 A.M.), Ray Washecka (5:00 P.M.), George Washington (11:30 a.m.),
John Wilson (5:00 P.M.), and Charlie Drew (9:30 A.M.) dressed in burgundy jacket and tie (even before TieOne-On with a Hat and no Jeans Sunday was instituted), at their (door)posts fifteen minutes before Masstime, opening the doors, greeting and welcoming the Mass-goers into church, assisting Mass-goers to a pew,
collecting the Offertory, assuring an orderly reception of Holy Communion, and distributing Parish bulletins.
I single these ten men out because, for a variety of reasons (death, old age, and relocation amongst them),
they no longer can be found at their posts welcoming us home.
Please join me in offering a prayer of gratitude for these ten parishioners and their many years of service at
the Altar. Perhaps during your offering, the Holy Spirit will inspire you, in thanksgiving for that service, to
answer the call to serve as an Usher (please contact Judy Germaine at (516) 580-3160) as well and help
everyone who comes home to Our Holy Redeemer to realize why coming home is what it’s all about and has
been for over one hundred years!

X MENSAJE DEL PASTOR X
28 DE AGOSTO DE 2016
Igual que Jesús, Usted y Yo
ISIS + ACLU = Se necesitan Catequistas.

You Always, Msgr.

Usted puede hacerlo dirigiéndose a Sister Dorothy c/o: The
Congregation of the Infant Jesus, 984 North Village Avenue, Rockville Centre, New York 11570.
EXALTED
OR
HUMBLED?
Jesus told a parable to those who
had been invited, noticing how they
were choosing the places of honour
at the table. “When you are invited
by someone to a wedding banquet, do
not recline at table in the place of
honour. A more distinguished guest
than you may have been invited by
him, and the host who invited both
of you may approach you and say,
‘Give your place to this man,’ and
then you will proceed with
embarrassment to take the lowest
place. Rather, when you are invited
go and take the lowest place so that
when the host comes to you he may
say, ‘My friend, move up to a higher
position.’ Then you will enjoy the
esteem of your companions at the
table. For everyone who exalts
himself will be humbled, but the one
who humbles himself will be exalted.”
