This Sunday, November 1st is the Solemnity of All
Saints. When it falls on a Sunday it takes the place of
our usual Sunday celebration of the mass, while
tomorrow we celebrate the feast of All Souls Day. All
Saints Day is a time for all of us to take some joy in the
belief that God does give us very good people who, by
their example, show us how to live faithful lives. Some
of these people live such heroic lives of faith that the
Universal Church recognizes their example. We call
these people Canonized Saints. Take a moment now to
think back to when you were kid. Did you have a
patronal saint who was your very own? Someone whose
life you studied and who you wanted to be like? All
Saints Day is a great time to renew that relationship and
say a prayer asking for your patronal saint’s
intercession.
But at the same time, if we take a moment to think
about it, I am sure each one of us can name a least one
individual that we have known in our own lives who
helped to light the spark of faith within us. These
people may not be “Canonized”, but we can be thankful
God gave them to us for a time to help us in our own
faith journey. We can also have confidence that these
people have a special place within God’s own heart.
These two feast days of All Saints and All Souls
encourages us to trust more deeply in God’s promise of
eternal and commended the loved ones we have lost to
the mercy of God.

Things are always busy at
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary school. We are
always looking for opportunities to serve our parish
community as well as the greater Belmont community.
One such opportunity is Fall Leaf Raking coming up on
Saturday, November 7 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, we
will be using our time and talent to assist our elderly
parishioners with Fall Leaf Raking. Please contact Mrs.
Rybicki if you are a parent or student interested in
assisting with this outreach project. We are looking for
any parents with a trailer to help haul away leaves as
well as a location to empty the bags of leaves (field,
forest, or brush pile). If you need leaves raked please
contact the school at 361-5483.
Math games were also on the calendar for last
Thursday the turnout was outstanding. Mrs. Rybicki has
also asked me to extend an invitation to all school aged
children from the parish to join us in the science lab
between 3:45 and 5:00. It is a drop in program so when
you get there we will get you involved. So if your kids
attend Belmont Elementary or another area school or
you home school please join us. The next date is
November 12.
The students held their “All Hallows Eve”
celebration at the FLC. They did have a lot of fun. I
don’t think they care what you call it as long as there are
sweets and games to play. Mrs. Dorothy Remington and
the room parents did an outstanding job in organizing.
This celebration goes back many years. Once the date
for All Saints Day was set by the church, the evening
prior to, was observed in numerous ways. Some were
more festive than others. In Mexico, the celebration is
called Dia de Muertos. Their celebration follows our
celebration of “All Hallows’ Eve”, “All Saints” and “All
Souls” pretty closely. In Mexico they build elaborate
altars in the cemeteries to honor the lives of relatives
who have passed on.
Remember you have a standing invitation to come to the
school and visit. Any parishioner is welcome anytime
during the school day. We will give you the tour, but be
prepared we might put you to work!
God Bless,
