NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2012 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Oh I hope we're not going to have a winter like the one in this painting!!! But if we do, maybe you can think about a winter scene like Grandma Moses painted. Anna Mary Robertson Moses began painting at age 76, and her winter paintings are considered her best works. She sold her first painting from an exhibit in a drugstore window in Hoosick Falls NY, and from then on continued to gain admiration in the emerging folk art genre of the 1930s. A very modest woman, Grandma Moses had exhibited in many county fairs and local venues before she was 'discovered'. She once noted that, "A primitive artist is just an amateur whose work sells." Now that should give us all a lot of confidence regarding our own artwork! See you at the January meeting — Liz PLEASE NOTE THE SPECIAL LOCATION: JANUARY 3rd MEETING (TUESDAY) AT THE BURIEN LIBRARY 14700 SW 148TH Street (and 6th Ave SW) Burien, WA Artist United Luncheon at the Rainier Golf and Country club replaced the December monthly meeting. A number of our members and guests attended an excellent meal and refreshments. The affair was a great opportunity to mingle and talk to our hearts content. Linda Dougherty spoke to us about the plans and hopes for the Burien store front program that would be of interest to our club. Potential venue opportunities along a busy street. ARTWERKS STUDIO In February 2012, Saturday the 4th, I will begin a new six week class series from 10 AM to 2:30 PM. Weather permitting, we will be able to paint out of doors at the park down the street or at the Burien Botanical Garden. If not, we will be painting at my studio each Saturday. I am excited to begin a new class and I hope I can encourage you to have fun with your talents and we will share some new ideas and techniques. We will be meeting at my studio on Des Moines Memorial Drive, in the Des Moines Professional Building on the first floor, #104. I will have coffee available and I have still life set ups prepared or you may bring items from home or photos that you want to work from. For those of you painting in oil, please use “painting medium” rather than paint thinner because of the odor and fumes. We have good ventilation at my studio, but we want everyone to feel comfortable. We will be exploring new techniques, so bring any pastels, acrylics or materials for collage that you would like to try. Watercolors are always welcome too. If you haven’t secured a spot with your deposit, please let me know by phone your intention to take the class. I take Visa and Master Card, etc. payments at the studio. There will be 6 classes at $25 per class. My home phone is 206-824-5639 and the studio is 206-248-6837. My studio is located about a mile north of Burien on Des Moines Memorial Drive and past the light at 128th on the right side of the road. Let’s paint together. It is something like the dawning of the day. In my youth I was blessed with a family that traveled extensively to different parts of the world. I became fascinated by the works of art that represented the societies of Western history. This fascination became the driving factor in my desire to study both the history and practice of art. My first venture was at the Burnley School of Professional Art. I went on to study at the University of Puget Sound and then on to graduate summa cum laude from the University of Alaska. · My present art is a formulation of several two-dimensional styles in many media. I often like to combine media so that I can draw from the individual characteristics and achieve my desired effect. I have been selling my work privately through my business 'Transitions" and most recently through Gallery 3 in Puyallup, Washington. 1have been honored by receiving awards in various competitions such as The Pacific Gallery Artists annual art exhibition, The Pacific Gallery Artists Members Show, The South Sound for league Arts Exhibit, the Renton Art Show and The Western Washington Puyallup Fine Art Show. My work has been collected by individuals in several states in the US and in Germany. I also have work displayed in local businesses and at the University of Alaska. Most recently I was honored with a membership into the National league of American Pen Women as a professional artist. I enjoy the spiritual aspect of creating my work. I listen and respond to the moment of inspiration. Sometimes the subject emerges and becomes the focus of work while at other times the painting process and the media take on their own path and become an expression of my emotions. The interplay with colors, values, lines, shapes and textures are my voice with which to communicate to the viewer. The viewer's experience is the final part of the artistic effort. I must contend that my art is always evolving. Always in transition. It is susceptible to the changes in my individual life and our world around us. I paint from my heart and I would have it no other way…… Thank You Mary Schossow Schumaker Founded 1949 P.O. If this project is approved and funded, Artists United will have the opportunity to become part of a new art gallery along a busy commercial street. Linda will provide an update on the progress of this project for our February Newsletter. A REMINDER FROM THE DECEMBER ISSUE OF THE NEWSLETTER Website Inputs Needed! Check out the Featured Artist page of our new website at http://artistsunited.weebly.com/. We had hope to have four featured artist’s each month. If you have photos of any of your artwork, providing input for this page is really easy; email the photo and list your name, the work's title and medium, and write a very short 'Artist's Statement. Look at the current ones on the website to see what others have provided. You don't need to worry about quality of your photo, except lighting should be reasonably uniform over the area of the artwork. Don Zimmerman will edit the photo if needed and get your approval before publishing. If you aren't able to photograph or email, just bring your artwork to the next meeting and Don will take the photo for you. The website page is open to all types of art: photography, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics -- your choice!
