What a fantastic event! With a record
number of attendees and great fundraising,
this year’s Gala was our most successful yet.
We raised over $65,000 for TSNW programs.

I’m a native Seattleite. After graduating
from the University of Washington, I
dedicated 20 years to raising 3 boys and
several dogs. I then went back to school
to transform my passion for exercise into
my current career as a Personal Trainer.
After graduating, I was smart enough to
realize how much I still didn’t know and
worked with many well-respected Physical
Therapists to emphasize rehab and injury
prevention. I subsequently started my
own business, Fit to the Core. For the last 7
years I have trained people in their homes,
offices, parks and my home. My training
emphasizes core strength and functional
movement.
I had my first exposure to Danskin during
the 2 years I volunteered with Sally
Edwards’ Heart Zone Training. Through
the process of helping women prepare
for that triathlon, I was exposed to Team
Survivor Northwest. I fell in love with
their mission of helping women heal and
take back control of their lives through
their choice of several athletic challenges
(climbing Mt. Adams, Rock and Roll
marathons and my personal favorite
triathlons). I first volunteered for Kim
Brasfield, then became her Assistant Coach
and last year had the honor of being asked
to take the lead.
The women I train are an amazing group
by any standard. When I was an Assistant
Coach, one of my athletes came up to me
and apologetically explained that she had
started a new chemotherapy treatment.
She hoped that I wouldn’t be upset if she
had to walk at the next training instead
of running since it was really sapping her
energy. This group has and continues to
face obstacles that would paralyze any
reasonable person. Yet, TSNW women
show up, train hard and don’t miss an
ounce of what life has to give. I can
only hope to give them a fraction of the
inspiration that they routinely give to me.
The evening was held at The Bellevue Hilton
with auctioneer Tim Leahy and MC Dena
Singleton. Guests enjoyed the silent and live
auctions with fabulous items. Our featured
speaker, Alison Regan of Fit Behavior, told
her story of cancer and having fun with being
active.
Not only was it a successful night, but
it ran smoothly, it was fun, energetic,
heartwarming, hilarious, and memorable.
Guests and volunteers showed the strength,
support, and spirit that is so abundant in
Team Survivor Northwest.
Thank you for your generosity. We’d like to
give a special thank you to our Gala Co-Chairs,
Cara Holloway and Nina Fogg.
Save the Date for October 19, 2013 at The
Bellevue Hilton!
It is such an honor to help them reach their
goals.
The mission of Team Survivor Northwest is to support women in their cancer recovery
through empowering programs of physical activity and health education.

Dragon Boat Fest
2012
BY ALICIA SUPERNAVAGE, TSNW
A S S O C I AT E D I R E C TO R
Thank you to all of the paddlers, volunteers,
supporters and friends who made the Seattle
Dragon Boat Festival a great success.
The Seattle Celebrating Life Dragon Boat Festival
has been a fixture in Seattle’s summer. This
was our first year partnering with the Canadian
International Dragon Boat Festival Society and
our first year at Lake Union Park. The event
raised over $5,000 for Team Survivor Northwest
programs for local women cancer patients
and survivors. As a fundraiser, the event was
comparable to previous years with so much of the
work—including coordination with race officials
and vending; committees managing all aspects of
event for about 8 months in advance; and setting
up and taking down the race course, fencing, beer
garden and grounds—transitioning to CIDBFS. We
had 34 teams paddle in 2012. The plan is to grow
to at least 45 teams in 2013 with the goal of up to
60 teams within 2-3 years. Without the leadership
and race management expertise of CIDBFS, this
event would not have the potential to grow into
such a successful event.
The downtown location was lively, the race
viewing was perfect and the sunshine came out
by lunchtime! The Seattle Dragon Boat Festival
will continue as a fundraiser and Team Survivor
Northwest will continue as the benefiting charity
for 2013 and beyond.
Congratulations to our Cup winners!

Festival on July 27 at South Lake Union Park!

or organizer for the 2013 event, please contact

Message from the
Associate Director
BY ALICIA SUPERNAVAGE, TSNW
A S S O C I AT E D I R E C TO R
Over the past few months, I’ve had the
opportunity to meet with women from
across the country who are interested in
starting a Team Survivor chapter. Talking
with them reminds me of how lucky we
are to be together in the Pacific Northwest.
Our cancer facilities and care providers are
cutting edge. There is an openness within
the medical community to look at holistic
options. We have plenty of resources to help
us connect our mind and body. We also get
to take advantage of the (mostly) temperate
weather and surround ourselves in beautiful
water and mountain views. Team Survivor
Northwest is a unique organization that
serves a very special mission.
As the holiday season approaches, I’d like to
thank the community that makes the Team in
Team Survivor Northwest.
To our members—You are the heart and
soul of the organization. Thank you for being
brave and coming to our activities for the first
time, trying different classes and challenges,
welcoming new members, and sharing your
experiences with family, friends and the
community.
To our volunteers—We really could not
do this without you. Thank you for giving
your time and talent to help women in our
community. Whether it is helping at an event,
leading women on walks, tabling at a race,
stuffing envelopes, getting items donated,
fixing our website, schlepping things to the
formerly-cursed storage unit, you are part of
the wheel that drives the organization.
To our donors and supporters—Thank you
for giving locally. This year, your support
of cash or items has allowed women to find
information about our programs, take that
first class, learn from talented instructors,
dash across the finish line, climb mountains,
and reclaim their bodies and lives.
In this newsletter, you will find an event
calendar for 2013. I encourage you to take a
look and pencil in a few activities into your
calendar for the new year. I look forward to
joining you for new adventures soon!

TSNW’s New
Development
Director
BY TRINETTE BAER-KOWALSKI,
D E V E LO P M E N T D I R E C TO R
People often ask me what I do for a living…
I always respond “I help make the world a
better place for cancer survivors and their
families.” Most people are pretty surprised
once they start asking more questions about
how I do that. The idea of asking for money
from people can make a lot of people squirm,
but I truly know its about education of the
mission and values and helping people
understand why Team Survivor Northwest is
of the utmost importance in this community.
True, asking for money is part of it, but only
about 1% of it.
I have been with Team Survivor Northwest
for just over a full month and I can speak
honestly when I say this is a group of women
who just get it. We know that medical
research shows that fitness post-diagnosis is
vital to survivorship. Exercise has been shown
to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy,
improve sleep, appetite, and mood of cancer
patients as well as significantly reduce the
risk of cancer reoccurrence in women. You
also get that Team Survivor Northwest helps
you regain your power. I have met with quite of
few of you and am completely impressed with
how much passion you speak about TSNW. I
have even heard “Team Survivor
truly saved my life”. I have worked for
numerous non-profits for the years, large ones,
very large ones and I have never heard people
speak so intensely about an organization like
they do about Team Survivor NW.
TSNW has been serving the Puget Sound for
17 years, 17 years to ensure that every woman
who wants to get her power back has the
opportunity. This means we need to work to
expand programs like Active Women/Healthy
Women, more retreats, more paddlers, more
triathlon training, more yoga, more running,
more walking, more hiking, more survivors….
Team Survivor is fully funded by individual,
foundation and corporate gifts, the generosity
of people like you. In 2011, $248.3 BILLION
was given from individuals to not for profit
organizations. I know that you are thinking
“oh, that’s all millionaires not “normal” people
like me.” The average annual household
contribution is $2,213, the mean is $870. That
means the majority of funds are coming from
people like you and in order to have more
cancer survivors getting their power back, we
have people like me willing to ask. Won’t you
help continue the fight?
Ways to Support Team Survivor Northwest
TSNW supports female cancer survivors as
they reclaim their bodies, spirits and lives.
Cancer and its treatment often leave people
physically and financially drained. Therefore,
TSNW is committed to providing free fitness
programs that support women in regaining
their strength and vitality. To continue to offer
programs such as Active Women/Healthy
Women, Dragon Boating, Triathlon Team
Training and the Annual Fitness Retreat,
we rely on the generosity of people like you.
Your generosity insures that female cancer
survivors have a place to go to reclaim their
future. There are many ways to give to TSNW:
