The term “thoroughbred” is sometimes
tossed about rather cavalierly. But it signifies
a very powerful pony, a horse able to achieve
top speeds and do it in a seemingly effortless,
long-strided fashion. And while thoroughbreds can be seen the world over, one of their
most acclaimed annual assemblies is happening at Santa Anita Park.

who’s a racist?
By Cal Thomas
MSNBC’s Ed
Schultz program
Friday
night,
the former chief
of staff for Colin
Powell, retired
Army Col. Lawrence
Wilkerson, said, of the
Republican Party, “My party is full of racists ... and
the real reason a considerable portion
of my party wants President Obama
out of the White House has nothing to
do with the content of his character,
nothing to do with his competence as
commander in chief and president,
and everything to do with the color of
his skin ... that’s despicable.”
Wilkerson’s allegation followed
his former boss’s endorsement of
President Obama for a second term.
The history of racism has certainly
stained both parties and there are racist Democrats and racist Republicans,
but when the race card is played this
close to the election, I suspect the proObama forces are sensing trouble.
We’ve come a long way in four
years, from a transracial candidate
who didn’t see a white or black America, but one America, to one in which if
a white person votes for Mitt Romney
that is evidence the voter is a racist.
Suppose that white person voted for
Obama four years ago and thinks the
president doesn’t deserve a second
term because he’s done a poor job?
Was the person not a racist in 2008,
but morphed into one in 2012?
When white liberals voted against
the confirmation of Justice Clarence
Thomas (including then-Senator Joe
Biden) were they racist? Many white
liberal Democrats are working overtime to defeat Rep. Allen West, Florida Republican. Are they racist?
Let’s reverse the polarity. According to a recent NBC/WSJ poll, 90
percent of African-Americans are expected to vote for the president. For
those who will do so solely to demonstrate racial solidarity, does this
qualify them to be inducted into the
racist hall of shame? And what about
conservative blacks who are voting for

Romney? They’re called disparaging
names by some blacks. Is that racism?
Mia Love, the mayor of Saratoga
Springs, Utah, is running for Congress. She is an African-American
woman and a Republican. If white
Democrats oppose her, are they guilty
of a twofer: racism and sexism?
While I didn’t vote for Barack
Obama in 2008 (and won’t this time)
because of his extreme liberalism, not
his skin color, I was still proud of my
country for electing the first AfricanAmerican president. If a qualified
conservative African-American had
been running, I would have voted for
him (or her). That fulfills the wish of
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., that all
people be judged on their character,
not their skin color.
I endorsed the nonviolent protests
of Dr. King to advance civil rights, but
opposed the incendiary rhetoric of
Malcolm X, Stokely Carmichael, the
Black Panther Party and other black
revolutionaries of the 1960s. Was I not
a racist when I supported Dr. King,
but racist when I opposed black radicals? How does one judge such things?
Where’s the racist detector and who
gets to operate it?
A Washington Post-ABC News
tracking poll concluded that “The
2012 election is shaping up to be more
polarized along racial lines than any
presidential contest since 1988, with
President Obama experiencing a steep
drop in support among white voters
from four years ago.”
The Post-ABC News pollsters, who
appear to see so much through racially-colored glasses, might have asked
some of those white voters who supported President Obama four years
ago why they are supporting Mitt
Romney now. I would be willing to
wager most, if not all, would say the
president’s performance has not lived
up to their expectations or his hype
about hope and change.
For supporters of President Obama,
including
Republican-in-name-only
Lawrence Wilkerson, to suggest that
Republicans want him out of the White
House simply because he’s black, is a
desperate attempt by a faltering campaign to change the subject from the
president’s record and lack of vision
for the future.
That isn’t racist. That’s fact.

Marine Corps Birthday
On November 10, 1775, the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia passed a resolution stating that “two Battalions of Marines be raised” for service as landing forces with the fleet. This resolution established the
Continental Marines and marked the birth date of the United States Marine
Corps. Serving on
land and at sea, these
first Marines distinguished themselves
in a number of important operations,
including their first
amphibious raid into
the Bahamas in
March 1776, under
the command of
Captain (later Major)
Samuel Nicholas.
The first commissioned officer in the
Continental Marines, Nicholas remained the senior Marine officer throughout
the American Revolution and is considered to be the first
Marine
Commandant. The Treaty of
Paris in April 1783
brought an end to the Revolutionary War and as the last of the Navy’s ships were
sold, the Continental Navy and Marines went out of existence.
‘No Such Thing as an Ex-Marine’
Following the Revolutionary War and the formal re-establishment of the Marine Corps on 11 July 1798, Marines saw action in the quasi-war with France,
landed in Santo Domingo, and took part in many operations against the Barbary
pirates along the “Shores of Tripoli.”
Marines took part in numerous naval operations during the War of 1812, as
well as participating in the defense of Washington at Bladensburg, Maryland,
and fought alongside Andrew Jackson in the defeat of the British at New Orleans.
The decades following the War of 1812 saw the Marines protecting American
interests around the world, in the Caribbean, at the Falkland Islands, Sumatra
and off the coast of West Africa, and also close to home in operations against the
Seminole Indians in Florida.
George Washington received his appointment as commander-in-chief of the
Continental Army the next day, and formally took command at Boston on July
3, 1775.

Commentary
Eliminating GOD
Continued from page 3
As you read this, 50 translators are politically correcting the word of God. Yes the German Evangelical Church is currently retranslating the Bible into a
more inclusive and sensitive gender-neutral edition.
Apparently certain passages have been deemed
offensive to women and are currently being re-written to be less discriminatory and more inclusive.
Specifically, the word disciple is being changed to disciples and disciplesses and references to
“Lord” and “Our Father” are being nixed as well.
This process of re-writing God’s word is supposed to
take about a year.
Now these folks must have some real guts, if no
brains it seems. After all, they are basically telling
God they are better writers than He is. For their
sake, let us hope they have lightning insurance.
This story of course should surprise none of us,
though. In recent years, those who would have us
all walk on egg shells so as not to possibly offend
anyone at anytime have been on a steady campaign
which has targeted just about everything.
Cartoons like “Mr. Magoo” have been attacked
as offensive to blind people. Schools named for historical figures such as Robert E. Lee, George Washington, Jefferson Davis, and Thomas Jefferson
have been forced to change their names. Sports
teams with such nicknames as Warriors, Braves, Indians, and Minutemen have been called racist and
many have changed their monikers.
Of course, certain behaviors have also come under fire as well. Smoking is now seen as the ultimate
6 November 1, 2012 THE MILITARY PRESS
evil in the world to many. Eating meat is also taboo
thanks to our politically correct friends. And fast
food is now being targeted for the same types of ridiculous lawsuits that targeted tobacco. SUV’s and
their drivers are now bad as well because they use
too much gas and are too big. And surely no behavior
has gotten as much bad press as gun owning. Anyone daring to own a gun is painted as a bloodthirsty
nut that is likely to kill anyone who crosses him.
Students in our schools are now prevented from
laughing at certain jokes or playing cops and robbers or tag or dodge ball. Zero-tolerance policies
regularly penalize children for nothing more than
being children. College newspapers, which are deemed insensitive or offensive, are banned or stolen,
and Conservative clubs are demonized relentlessly
on America’s campuses.
The Founding Fathers are also on this list of
unwelcome influences in our more politically correct world. The flags of the Confederacy and the
United States are also prominent on this list.
Groups like the Boy Scouts have become public
enemy number one because they dare to teach traditional values to young men. And of course any public display of a belief in Jesus or Christianity has
become an unforgivable sin.
And now the Bible is under attack. The Bible is
the word of God. To hundreds of millions of people it
is the bread of life. It is how we decipher right from
wrong. Yet even this holy book is not safe from the
political correctors of the world.
One must ponder exactly what they hope to accomplish. Simply put, their ultimate goal is to redefine every aspect of what is offensive and what
is acceptable until their ideology is adopted as de
facto law.
Be it through indoctrination or intimidation,
Commentary
they will not stop
until only their
ideology is heard
and
accepted
everywhere. In
our world today,
there is a war between secularism
and
traditional
religious values.
Particularly
in
America is this
true today.
This effort to
re-write the Bible will eventually find it’s way
to our nation as
well. The reasons for trying to
make the Bible more gender-neutral
might seem unclear at first. They
might even seem justified to some of
us. After this entire endeavor is being
done under the guise of making the
Bible less offensive and sexist. And
surely this is a worthwhile goal right?
The goal though is very different
than being more sensitive and inclusive. Consider this: the Bible is conside-
red by believers
to be the absolute truth and the
Word of God. If
these believers
are correct, then
certainly no editing of the bible
is justified or
needed.
If, however,
the Bible can be
re-written and
altered,
then
the words in the
book are just
that, words. Rewriting the Bible
is more about taking away its meaning, and stripping away it’s authority over morality.
Take away the Bible as an absolute,
then the importance of the Bible is lessened. Thus the importance of God is
lessened. Only when that is accomplished can the political correctors take
the place they
desire. God’s place.
Over 30 Years experience
I wanted to write a story about politically correct people
trying to eliminate God from America. In my research this
column by Doug Hagin touched the essence of my thoughts.

Gene Simmons, entrepreneur, actor, bassist,
and
singersongwriter
from the rock band, KISS has always
shown love and support of the United
States Military through his visits to
entertain the troops, his visits to Veterans Hospitals, his donations to help
Wounded Warriors, and through his
hiring of Veterans.
However, in the upcoming months,
it is Gene Simmon’s wife, daughter,
and sister-in-law who will be in the
spotlight for steping up to help America’s heroes, as their vintage-style pho-
tos appear in the
popular 7th annual
“Pin-

Vets”calendar
that will be
sold to raise funds that will
help to support America’s ill and injured Veterans in VA Hospitals and
those troops deployed across the
globe.
“Pin-Ups For Vets” Founder and
model Gina Elise, who is in the middle
of a 50-state VA Hospital Tour, invited
Gene and Shannon to join her on her
visit to California’s Long Beach VA
Hospital. As they made their rounds
of the hospital wards to thank and
deliver the “Pin-Ups For Vets” calendars and “Kiss A Vet” T-shirts
donated by
the nonprofit organization’s supporters, many of the Veterans asked Shannon if she was in the 2012 calendar.
That was just the inspiration Shannon
needed to do a photo shoot with her
daughter and sister for the upcoming
2013 “Pin-Ups For Vets” fundraiser
calendar, that is shipped to Veterans,
troops, and civilians across the globe.
The Tweed-Simmons ladies showed
up ready to “rock and roll” for a fun
vintage-style photo shoot at Siren Studios in Hollywood, California. “PinUps For Vets” Founder and
model, Gina Elise, was there
to lend her expertise to help
pose the ladies, as acclaimed
photographer, Austin Young,
captured gorgeous photos of
the Tweed-Simmons trio.
The 2013 “Pin-Ups For
Vets” calendar is now ready
for orders and can be purchased for oneself, donated to
a hospitalized Veteran or to a
deployed service member. Calendars are $10.00 each and are
a tax-deductible purchase. Veterans, troop supporters, pin-up
fans, and fans of the calendar’s
featured celebrities can visit the
“Pin-Ups For Vets” website at
www.PinUpsForVets.com and go
to the “Order Now” page to order
the popular 2013 calendars. Website visitors can also learn more
about this project, honored with many
community service awards, and also
honored by Oprah Winfrey and the deployed troops. Funds raised by the organization have helped VA Hospitals
purchase needed equipment.

The Jean Spangler
Mystery
Jean Spangler was an actress during the golden age of Hollywood. She
mysteriously disappeared one day in October 1949 when she set off to meet
her ex-husband to discuss child support. She was 26 years old.
Her purse appeared two days later, untouched and exactly as cashless as
it had been (she didn’t carry money — the investigation ruled out robbery).
The only thing inside was a cryptic note:
“Kirk: Can’t wait any longer. Going to see Dr. Scott. It will work best this
way while mother is away.”
Hollywood actress Jean Spangler’s purse and the note inside was found
in Griffith Park two days later after her mysterious disappearance in October 1949.

Ladies, hopefully by now everyone

Before You Go:
DON’T: Listen to Cinderella. She
was crazy to wear those shoes. Wear
something comfortable. You may be
standing before, during & after cocktail hour, or walk 100+ yards to do
your pictures so if you can’t walk a
marathon in 6 inch heels reconsider
those stilettos.
DO: If you can afford to splurge on
hair, makeup & nails do, if you don’t
ask a friend or neighbor to do it for
you. It’s worth it!
DON’T: Wear animal print, see

wedding dress, too tight dress or high
slits. If you do you may be asked to
leave and at the bare minimum possibly put negative spotlight on your
husband or boyfriend.
DON’T: Wear a short dress. This

is a formal event and even if you’re
a short girl or think you look good in
short dresses. Don’t! It’s not 1776 yet
the guys wear their most formal attire
with the history and traditions that
men who fought and died for this country originated so a mini-skirt or cocktail dress is more than disrespectful.
At the Ball:
DON’T: Get drunk & tell a commanding officer he’s “fun-sized” or
flip off the camera, yes it has been
done.
DO: Show up on time. Map out your
route before you go so you’re not late
even if you do get lost. You should
be there with enough time to grab a
drink, mingle and hit the bathroom if
needed before the ceremony.
DO: Be polite & expect to socialize. You may be ‘voluntold’ to socialize with women who may or may not

The Honor Flight San Diego float
entry in the San Diego County Veterans Day Parade is an Old Town Trolley
car outfitted with a patriot flair honoring WWII Veteran Heroes. The float
will be driven by Bill, a Navy Veteran
and employee of Old Town Trolley. Bill
has been a resident of San Diego since
1971 and a Trolley employee for 5-1/2
years. Old Town Trolley donated Trolley #111 as the official Honor Flight
San Diego float.
Bill’s passengers aboard the float
are World War ll Veteran Heroes and
five Honorary Corpsmen. The Corpsmen will be there to take care of our
heroes’ needs during their adventure
in the parade.
The top of the trolley will be festooned with 50 American flags honoring Veterans from each of our United
States. The presentation of the Commemorative Flag arrangement was
designed and built by Dave Tofte, past
Commander of All American VFW
Post 3787 in San Diego’s Mission Valley. American flags were donated by
All Kings Flags in San Diego’s Old
Town, www.allkingsflags.com. Graphics depicting WWll scenes on the float
were designed by Tony Montemarano,

Kudos to Military Press Newspaper,

maimed in combat. Russell, an amateur actor who really did lose both of
his hands in the war, earned an honorary Oscar for ‘’bringing hope and
courage to his fellow veterans,’’ then
beat the competition to win the Best
Supporting Actor Oscar, making him
the only performer to win two Academy Awards for the same performance.
Marine husband (Bruce Dern) returns
from combat, he has his own psychic
and physical scars to cope with, along
with his wife’s infidelity. Fonda, of
course, had been notorious for her
offscreen opposition to the war, but
she commissioned the screenplay and
surprised everyone by making a film
that wasn’t so much antiwar as proveteran.
The Best Years of Our Lives
(1946)
William Wyler’s moving saga of the
postwar lives of three World War II
vets was a boldly frank film for 1946
(when it earned an Academy Award
for Best Picture), and it remains the
definitive film about veterans readjusting to civilian life. Al (Best Actor
Oscar winner Fredric March, shown)
comes home to a loving wife (Myrna
Loy), but he feels estranged from his
grown children and his job (in a bank
that regards his fellow vets as figures on a balance sheet), so he turns
to drink. Fred (Dana Andrews) finds
his wartime heroism as a bomber pilot doesn’t count for much when he’s
trying to find work or impress the
war bride (Virginia Mayo) he barely
knows. And Homer (Harold Russell)
feels like damaged goods, having been
notorious Russian roulette sequence.
Mike returns home relatively unscathed, but Steven comes back a selfpitying paraplegic, while the tragic
Nick doesn’t come back at all, remaining in Saigon and ritualistically reenacting his torture for money. The
film’s Vietnam sequences are hyperbolically surreal, but its meditation
on survivor’s guilt and a generation’s
loss of innocence is genuine. The movie is credited with inspiring the drive
to build the Vietnam War memorial
on the Washington Mall.
Coming Home (1978)
Jon Voight (shown, with Jane Fonda)
won an Oscar for his role as Luke, a
paraplegic Vietnam vet (modeled on
Ron Kovic of Born on the Fourth of
July fame) who overcomes his bitterness when he meets veterans’ hospital
volunteer Sally (Fonda, who also won
an Oscar). As their friendship blossoms into an affair, Luke learns that
he can still have a romantic and sexual life, as the film demonstrates in a
famously tender and frank love scene.
Alas, Sally is married, and when her

It’s Always Fair Weather
(1955)
For a classic MGM musical that includes a dazzling number in which
Gene Kelly (shown, left with Dan Dailey, Michael Kidd, and Dolores Gray)
dances in roller skates, this is a surprisingly grim tale. Wartime buddies
Kelly, Dailey, and Kidd reunite 10
years after coming home from World
War II, only to realize that they don’t

There’s still time to buy a new home
this year, and move in before the holidays, at Pardee Homes’ Canyon Hills
master planned community. Nestled
among scenic rolling hills and preserved open space in Lake Elsinore,
are three new home neighborhoods by
Pardee with ‘buy today/move-in this
year’ availability.
“With interest rates still at historic
lows, and the end of 2012 in sight, it
couldn’t be better time to finally make
that move to a new, energy-efficient
home,” said Matt Sauls, director of
marketing for Pardee Homes. “As
the master developer of Canyon Hills,
we’ve made sure we have a varied inventory of new homes available for
this fall’s selling season. Our three
new home neighborhoods in Lake Elsinore include both one- and two-story
homes ready to close escrow before the
end of this year, all with energy-saving features, and floor plans designed
to suit the needs of growing families
with children, first-time buyers and
even empty-nesters. We are currently
offering up to 3% financing incentives
on our move-in ready homes.”
Plan 4AR (Lot 48) at Pardee’s LivingSmart® Homes Hillside is scheduled to be ready
for move-in this December. This beautiful new two-story home has four bedrooms,
three baths and approximately 2,256 square feet. It is priced at $264,750.
LivingSmart® Homes Canyon Hills
includes six floor plans with a range of
three to seven bedrooms, two to four
baths, two and three-bay garages and
approximately 1,132 to 3,099 square
feet. Ingenious touches such as gour-
met kitchens with slab granite and
stainless steel appliances are complemented by a host of room options such
as media niches, extra bedrooms, fireplaces, garage workshops, master bedroom decks and a four-bay garage in
select plans.
“We have some great home sites
available right now, including Plan
4AR on Lot 360 with four bedrooms,
two baths, and approximately 1,900
square feet,” said Sauls. “This beautiful single-story home is on a cul-desac and includes granite kitchen countertops and upgraded flooring. It is
priced to sell at $246,950.”
Spanish, Traditional, French and
Italian architectural styles are accented with shutter and iron accents and
water-friendly, front-yard landscaping is included. Distinctive interiors
include slab granite kitchen countertops, General Electric® stainless steel
finish appliances, a convenient storage
pantry in the kitchen and large walkin closets in the master bedroom suite.

In order to obtain a VA home loan,
you must first fill out VA Form 26-1880,
the request for your Certificate of Eligibility. This certificate is issued only
through the Veterans Administration,
and is the first step towards applying
for your loan. Veterans, active duty,
guard or reserve, and military spouses
potentially qualify for this certificate.
Keep in mind that the Certificate of
Eligibility, while necessary, only allows an eligible individual to apply for
a home loan; it does not guarantee a
loan approval.
Eligibility for the Certificate is
based on an individual’s (or a spouse’s)
military service. Congress establishes
eligibility with strict guidelines. Here
are five common categories of those
who normally qualify for a Certificate
of Eligibility:

Korean: 6/27/1950 to 1/31/1955
Vietnam: 8/5/1964 to 5/7/1975
You must have at least 90 days on
active duty and been discharged under other than dishonorable conditions. If you served less than 90 days,
you may be eligible if discharged for a
service connected disability.

You must have served at least 181

LA’s saviors
T
he city of Los Angeles not only
expects its new-look Lakers to
win an NBA title this season, it
also predicts that Steve Nash, Dwight
Howard, Pau Gasol, Metta World Peace
and Kobe Bryant will revive the local
economy, fix the school system, speed
up the 405 freeway expansion and low-
er gas prices by 40 cents per gallon.
And that’s just in the first year.
The pressure is on, and the Lakers responded by going 0-8 in the preseason. The games don’t count, but
in Hollywood, perception is reality
and the perception today is that Mike
Brown’s team has a whole lot of stars
seemingly playing on different planets.
Don’t worry, be happy, say the
players. The Lakers will be fine, says
Brown (via Eric Pincus of the Los Angeles Times), who most certainly is on the
hot seat if his team can’t get past the
second round of the playoffs this year.
“What we’re doing right now isn’t
necessarily to win the games now or
in the short term,” Brown told Pincus
after the team lost to the Los Angeles
Clippers Wednesday night. “Hopefully what we’re doing will pay off in the
long term when it really counts.”
Sorry, but don’t the games in November count the same as ones in
February or March? A win is a win,
regardless of when you get it. To say
your team doesn’t necessarily look to
win games early in the year sounds a
bit out of touch.
But from all the smiles and laughter, one might think the Lakers went
8-0 in October. Nash and Howard grace
the cover of Sports Illustrated’s NBA
Preview edition this week, flanking a
headline of “Now This is Going to be
Fun”.
So far, not so much. The team looks
disorganized and out of sync. Haven’t
we seen this picture before? Blame it
on the Princeton and new combinations of new players, say the coaches.
So expect the unexpected in 201213 from the Lakers. This is a team
that, on paper, looks like a powerhouse. How will it look on the court
come playoff time next spring?
Will Howard and Nash still be smiling?

Heard the one about the . . .
ALLSTATE
VALUE
PLAN
A. Shut up.
Sometime this year, we taxpayers
will again receive another ‘Economic
Stimulus’ payment.
This is indeed a very exciting
program, and I’ll explain it
by using a Q & A format:
Q.
What
is
an
‘Economic
Stimulus’
payment?
A. It is money that the
federal government will
send to taxpayers.
Q. Where will the
government
get
this
money ?
A. From taxpayers.
Q. So the government
is giving me back my own
money?
A. Only a smidgen of
it.
Q. What is the purpose
of this payment ?
A. The plan is for you to use the
money to purchase a high-definition
TV set, thus stimulating the economy.
Q. But isn’t that stimulating the
economy of China ?
Below is some helpful advice on
how to best help the U.S. Economy by
spending your stimulus check wisely:
* If you spend the stimulus money
at Wal-Mart, the money will go to
China or Sri Lanka.
* If you spend it on gasoline, your
money will go to the Arabs.
* If you purchase a
computer, it will go to India,
Taiwan or China.
* If you purchase
fruit and vegetables,
it will go to Mexico,
Honduras
and
Guatemala.
* If you buy an
efficient car, it will
go to Japan or Korea.
* If you purchase
useless stuff, it will
go to Taiwan.
* If you pay your credit
cards off, or buy stock, it
will go
to management
bonuses and they will hide it
offshore.
Instead, keep the money
America by:
1) Spending it at yard sales, or
2) Going to ball games, or
WITH A VALUABLE AGENT
I can help you save big time.
3) Spending it on prostitutes, or
4) Beer or
5) Tattoos.
(These are the only American
businesses still operating in the U.S. )
Conclusion:
Go to a ball game with a tattooed
prostitute that you met at a yard sale
and drink beer all day !
Whether you’re just starting out or on a tight
budget, the Allstate Value Plan is a great way
to go. Plus, I’m always here whenever you
have a question or need help. Call me today

Forget Lincoln... how about the tragic
saga of President James Garfield as a
major motion picture?
By Liz Smith
I was thinking just recently of a
book I’ve read that should be made
into a movie. And seeing trailers for
Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” it has
been pressing on my mind.
Why couldn’t this master moviemaker film the James Garfield saga?
The story of the failed assassination
attempt only days before this sterling
character (who didn’t want to run for
president) became the chief executive
against his will would make a compelling film.
The book, “Destiny of the Republic” by Candice Millard, is one of the
most brilliant and heart-rending ever.
I don’t think the average American
even knows much about this story beyond knowing that Garfield was shot
before he could even begin his days in
office. Three horrible, painful months
passed before he died of infection —
wrought by the narrow-minded doctors who rejected the new idea of antisepsis from Lister in England.
Garfield’s shooter was an idiotic,
self-willed, deluded kind of lunatic
that we encounter through the ages
— people who think they should be
“famous” and select assassination as
their route to the top. In this attempt,
which eventually succeeded because
of the president’s stubborn doctor, the
would-be killer was finally hanged.
Garfield’s doctors went right on tormenting the infected president, plunging their fingers and unsterilized instruments into his wound, searching
for the bullet. The story of how Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell
tried to use science to help is just riveting.
Garfield might have made a great
president. He was certainly a remarkable man, and his incredible courage,
uncomplaining, after months of torture is a grueling read — and enough
to bring one to tears. In fact, much of
the book is emotional, dealing as it
does with our still new country and its
still-new great dreams.
Garfield’s inept and retiring vicepresident, Chester A. Arthur, at first
a total failure, finally rose to the oc-
casion and did a good job in the office
he inherited. This was only 16 years
after the actor John Wilkes
Booth had killed President
Lincoln.
The story of Garfield,
his election against his
will, his happy marriage
cut short, his unbelievable suffering and his
death, which was a
tragedy for U.S. history, really would
make a good film.
So, would Spielberg, Weinstein,
Scorsese, Geffen or Tom
Hanks consider this
suggestion?
Of
course not.

HONORING ALL WHO SERVED
VETERANS DAY 2012
Going on now at
By Liz Smith
I was thinking just recently of a book I’ve read that should be made into a
movie. And seeing trailers for Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” it has been pressing on my mind.
Why couldn’t this master moviemaker film the James Garfield saga? The
story of the failed assassination attempt only days before this sterling character (who didn’t want to run for president) became the chief executive against
his will would make a compelling film.
The book, “Destiny of the Republic” by Candice Millard, is one of the most
brilliant and heart-rending ever. I don’t think the average American even
knows much about this story beyond knowing that Garfield was shot before
he could even begin his days in office. Three horrible, painful months passed
before he died of infection — wrought by the narrow-minded doctors who rejected the new idea of antisepsis from Lister in England.
Garfield’s shooter was an idiotic, self-willed, deluded kind of lunatic that
we encounter through the ages — people who think they should be “famous”
and select assassination as their route to the top. In this attempt, which eventually succeeded because of the president’s stubborn doctor, the would-be
killer was finally hanged.
Garfield’s doctors went right on tormenting the infected president, plunging their fingers and unsterilized instruments into his wound, searching for
the bullet. The story of how Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell tried
to use science to help is just riveting.
Garfield might have made a great president. He was certainly a remarkable man, and his incredible courage, uncomplaining, after months of torture
is a grueling read — and enough to bring one to tears. In fact, much of the
book is emotional, dealing as it does with our still new country and its stillnew great dreams.
Garfield’s inept and retiring vice-president, Chester A. Arthur, at first a
total failure,
finally rose to the occasion and did a$22,175

In 1972, at age 16, she began romancing John
Derek, a married man 30 years her senior. Not long
after the two started dating, John divorced his wife,
actress Linda Evans, and he and a young Cathleen
moved to Germany so that John wouldn’t get into
rape trouble due to Cathleen’s young age. They returned to the United States when Cathleen was 18
and they married in 1976. Derek was born Derek
Delevan Harris in Hollywood, California, the son
of actor and director Lawson Harris. His good looks
quickly got him supporting roles, most notably as
the son of Willie Stark played by Broderick Crawford in All the King’s Men (1949), but he also enjoyed leads such as “Nick Romano” in Knock on Any
Door (1949) opposite Humphrey Bogart (who told
him, “You look great, but kid, that’s not enough”),
“Brock Mitchell” in Fury at Showdown, and as Robin Hood in Rogues of Sherwood Forest (1950) with
Alan Hale. He played Joshua in The Ten Commandments (1956).
He also was a film director. He directed his wives,
Ursula Andress, in two movies, and Linda Evans in
one. His best known films as a director are those he
directed with his fourth wife, Bo Derek (she starred
in four of his movies). The 1990 film Ghosts Can’t Do
It was his last film in the director’s chair.
He was first married to actress Pati Behrs, née
Pati Behrs Eristoff (February 13, 1922 — July 10,
2004). Behrs was a Russian-born American actress,
a grandniece of Leo Tolstoy. She was married to Der-
ek from 1951-57. They had two children, Russell and
Sean Catherine Derek. John Derek took photos of
all three of his subsequent wives (at different times)
for Playboy magazine.

ARGO – (R) This is a fantastic film
about a part of history most people

bring the movie that was never made
