OCTOBER 2013
The Luau was a huge success with over 90 persons attending. Thank you to all
that worked so hard. Our summer is almost over. October brings fall,
Halloween and the Harvest Hoedown in Yuba City at the Yuba-Sutter
Fairgrounds. It is usually very well attended and well worth the trip. Hope to
see many of you there.
The new dancer class has started with a bang. Everyone seems to be enjoying
themselves and are doing very well. Be sure to say hi and help them out when

HAPPY THANKSGIVING
GETTING TO KNOW
SMOKEY & BARBARA BENNETT
Smokey came to Amador County in 1949 and Barbara showed up in 1966. Barbara went to James Lick High
School in San Jose and graduated from San Jose State College in 1962. Smokey graduated from Jackson High
School and went to Stockton College. Barbara was a Bio Chemist at Amador Hospital and later owned and
operated several travel agencies. Her late husband Dennis was a dentist. Barbara and Smokey first met
sometime in the late 60’s or early 70’s in Jackson. Smokey and the late Freda Bennett owned and operated
Bennett Auto Parts in Jackson for 40 years. Smokey also spent 31 years with Jackson Volunteer Fire
Department. After Dennis’ death Barbara, Smokey, Freda and another couple happened to meet in Puerto
Vallarta while on vacation. This was about 1980.
Both Dennis and Freda had passed away and Barbara and Smokey started dating in 2007. We were married in
the chapel at Silver Lake in August of 2008. We recently celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary with all of
our kids at Silver Lake Campground.
We sent all six of our kids (Barbara's two, Matt and Cindy and Smokey's four, Kathy, Julia, John and Jim)
through Amador County schools. All of our kids live in Amador or Sacramento County and are currently
employed in great jobs. Together we have eleven grand children but no great grandchildren, yet. Two of our
grand kids are attending college, one at UC Merced and one at Western Oregon University.
Since Smokey had square danced back in the 60’s and 70’s he talked Barbara into learning to square dance, and
Smokey had to learn all over again. We graduated in a class with the Garner’s, Lambert's, and Vosburg's. We
have enjoyed square dancing together for the last five years. We enjoy dancing with the Claim Jumpers and our
caller, Jim Rammel. Some of the highlights of our square dancing include a Mediterranean cruise with Scott
Byars as caller and dancing in Italy, Turkey and Greece. We have also square danced while cruising in the
Caribbean and on a cruise to Alaska. Last year we attended our first “Nationals” square dance Festival in
Spokane. For the last three years we have gone to Mesa, Arizona and ended up square dancing 5 to 7 times a
week. We will leave in late January next year and return in mid April. Barbara enjoys gardening, working with
the computer, traveling in the RV, playing cards and reading. Smokey enjoys woodworking, computer, playing
cards and traveling in the RV. We enjoy “Dry Camping” in Hope Valley with our fellow Claim Jumpers and
hope to do it again for the next few years.
We would like to thank Hank and Mary, Sharon and Geylord and Jim and Sharon for being our mentors and
coaching us through our first years of dancing. They are “Angels” and that is what square dancing is all about.
