Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce Announces the New
Board of Directors for Their 35th Anniversary Year
We are happy to announce the Board of Directors
who will be taking us through the 35th year of the
Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce.
“The Chamber has been growing at an extraordinary rate over the last year and the dynamics of this
growth requires a Board of Directors able to move it
up a notch to keep up with the current economy and
the changes that come with a larger organization,”
stated Angela Hoffman, Executive Director.
Janet Otten, Director of Member Services added,
“We are excited about the caliber of business members who will be guiding our Chamber through this
anniversary year.”
Not only is this our 35th anniversary, but it is also
a politically charged year with a presidential election
and all the changes that brings to our country and
our community.
Leading the Board this year as President is Ike
Crumpler
of
Upstairs
Communications
International, a highly successful local public relations company. President Elect is Jonathan Milton of
Milton Engineering Consultants. The new Treasurer
is Doug Smith of Janus Background Investigations,
and Theresa Smith of Beaches Hair Studio, a 12-year
member of the Chamber, will be Secretary. This
Board also boasts Ralph Davino as Historian. Ralph
is a long-time Hobe Sound resident, a past president
of the Board and successful local business entrepreneur. Immediate Past President, Steve Fenton, FedEx
Ground, remains onboard to help continue the legacy
of the 2015 leadership.
Directors on the Board are Glen Alexander,
Strategic Realty; Tony Barletta, Brightway
Insurance/Barletta Agency; Melinda Brault, Geminye
Design Group; Michael Dooley, Illustrated
Properties; Michael Ennis, Michael Ennis
Construction; Marlene Filer, Celebrities Fore Kids;
Jan McDonald, AMAC Insurance Agency; Robert
McLean, Avalon Air; Trudi Onus, Seacoast Bank
Mortgage Loan Officer;
Dr. Nicole Townsley,
Merritt Family Chiropractic; and Atty. Brandon
Woodward, The Law Office of Brandon Woodward.
The Chamber also boasts a cohesive and experienced
staff that, in cooperation with the 2016 Board, will
move the Chamber forward. This year Angela Hoffman,
will celebrate 5 years as Executive Director, and Jan
Otten, Director of Member Services, will celebrate 10
years in her position. In addition, Jennifer Ahern joined
the staff in April 2015 as Account Executive and is
responsible for bringing in approximately 40 new members since that time. New bookkeeper/office manager,
Mary Palczer has come to the Chamber with many years
of experience in the area in the hospitality industry and
as a former employee of the Martin County Convention
& Visitors Bureau. Rounding out the office staff is a
dedicated and experienced group of volunteers whose
faithful service is priceless.
With a dynamic Team and Board such as this the 35th
Anniversary year promises to be unmatched in the
Chamber’s past history and a motivating force for its
future growth and success.

We welcome feedback of all kinds and are especially
grateful to hear positive words about Hobe Sound
Chamber referral programs and opportunities.
Recently, we received praises from member Ron
Walters of Elite Payroll Solutions. It is words of appreciation like this, from our members, that inspires creativity and motivation.
Ron wrote to us and said, “What a great organization to join! Kudos to Angela Hoffman and the staff
at the Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce! Where
most Chambers boast about their ability to help you
with networking, marketing and sales, this Chamber
actually delivers.
In my first year as a member of this friendly, professional and local Chamber, I was not only able to meet
some wonderful business owners, I also increased my
book of business significantly. Their monthly events
and sponsorships allowed me to
spread the word about my
company’s history and the
value proposition we offer to
other Chamber members.
If you have ever considered
joining a Chamber of
Commerce in Martin, or the
surrounding counties, I strongly urge you to consider
joining the Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce,
where members (not politics) come first.”

Sound.
Hobe Sound Murals Project
Reaches #20 Milestone!
“What art offers is space - a certain breathing room
for the spirit.” ~ John Updike
The newest Mural #20, titled “Creating Yourself ” is
a burst of color and symbols cascading across the south
wall of new Chamber members - ChildrenAcross
AmericaFL. Their “Amazing Things” office and programming space for youth, family and community, is
located at 10830 Federal Highway. The mural celebrates learning the languages of science, math, music,
literature, and the importance of nurturing creativity
in youth and throughout our lives.
Since 2009, each new Hobe Sound Murals project has
appeared and then blended like carefully embroidered
details in the fabric of our community. When contemplating any of the 20 murals completed so far, one can
sense that the goal to “Create an outdoor gallery of beautiful walls, honoring our rich history, present vitality and
future promise,” is being accomplished.
Among other images, a vivid floral backdrop blossomed at Bluewater Landscape’s Garden Center, a set
of French doors are flung open to a tropical beach
alongside Hobe Sound Deli, seasons shift seamlessly
among the campers at Copley’s RV, the patios of Taste
Restaurant offer a dreamy jungle of tropical fruit trees
www.hobesound.org
and garden quilt of flowers, a tranquil scene of an old
Florida memory is celebrated on the Jenkins
Landscape building and even the old train station
found a place by the tracks again at the Art Gallery.
From Dixie Highway, down Bridge Road and up
US1 each additional creation visually links our corridors and showcases the amazing talents of 44 professional guest artists, as well as the collective skills of over
100 hobby painters & community members. All participants are honored on each wall’s plaque and a few
very special people have gone above and beyond with
their dedication and help on numerous endeavors.
In the beginning, the grass roots efforts were solely
coordinated by Nadia and Josef Utto with the backing
of their company - Urban Camouflage Arts. Funding
came from them, the assistance of several local grants,
initial supply donations, some welcomed building
patronage and the much-appreciated labor of all who
generously donated their time and services.
In 2011, the Mural Project matured to become part
of Landmark Arts, Inc., a not for profit organization
dedicated to “Creating Community Culture and promoting an enriched community experience through
the arts.” Its creation was formed to support the
murals and another initiative – the World
Fountain/9.11 Memorial, (currently on – hold for
both site and partnership review).
Nadia continues to provide individual professional
services as an Urban Camouflage artist along with its
liability insurance, scaffolding equipment, etc., but
spearheads the mural project’s growth as one of
Landmark Arts six volunteer Board Members; Jennifer
Ferrari, Tom Fucigna, Martha Ann Kneiss, Bosha
Stone and Josef Utto.
The general economy, building owner and business
tenant budget parameters, continue to affect the funding of each mural. Not including the artist’s remuneration, the average basic cost per mural begins at
$1,500. Currently, guest painters are compensated
with either an agreed upfront stipend or after project
time and costs are tallied, the remaining budget is
divided by individual hourly efforts. These amounts
have varied among specific projects. At the national
standard rate of $15 per square foot, the project has
provided nearly $250,000 of mural value throughout
town for approximately only $20,000 over the course
of seven years! Certainly a labor of love for the month–
long effort that each mural requires!

Your Computer is in Danger, or is It?
By Dennis Root
Have you, or someone you know, received a phone
call from a complete stranger who said your computer
was in danger of crashing? They said that they work
with – insert any legitimate computer/software company
here – and your computer sent them a message that it is
about to crash. This crash will result in a catastrophic loss
of all of your data. Once they have you significantly concerned for the security of your personal information,
they indicate that they can fix the issue for you over the
phone. All you have to do is permit them remote access
to your computer and pay a technical support fee, which
can be several hundred dollars.
The truth is, unless you have made some special kind
of contractual arrangement, your computer will never
take it upon itself to contact another organization. You
may ask, how do they know my name and other personal
information? Simple. It is available through a variety of
public directories and databases.
For example, they can go to different websites to
obtain residential addresses in an area. Then they simply
go to that county’s Property Appraisers website and
acquire personal information associated with that
address. Now a call can be made and they can ask for the
resident by name and be able to verify their home
address. This minimal amount of information is often
enough to convince some people the call is legitimate.
Here are some tips
to remember.
• Recognize your
computer is not contacting people for you
• Do not give

• Build Your Business •
Business Networking and First Impressions! Part One
Submitted By John Carr, JR Consulting Group
Today people are business networking more than
ever. What I mean by business networking is going to
events with other business people and trying to make
more contacts for future business, or more importantly,
finding referral partners (a referral partner is a term we
use at JRC Consulting Group that identifies a person
whom we pass referrals with on a regular basis). These
events are important to many business people and
unfortunately many people take them very lightly and
do not think of these meetings as an opportunity to
make a first impression. I could write an entire book
on my networking experiences over the past 30 years
that would make you laugh, cry, read in stunned shock
and sometimes not believe what you are reading.
A few years ago I was at a networking event that I will
remember forever. I did the usual check in and as I
looked at the sea of people I started scanning the room
for someone I did not know. When you attend networking events one of your objectives should always be to
meet new people. Bingo, within seconds I saw a gentleman standing by himself. I casually walked over to him
and introduced myself. As he said hello and started to
introduce himself I was almost knocked over by a heavy
dose of bad breath! I tried to step back a step however,
he felt obligated to get closer. As he is telling me all
about how great his company is and how he can help
every single person in the world the next thing I knew
he was putting his arm around on my shoulder like we
have been friends for years. I decided that out of the
kindness of my heart I would help him out and offer
him one of my mints. When he stated he did not need
one I almost fell on the floor both from amazement and
the odor of his breath. I decided that it was time for me
to go and excused myself to go to the restroom.
Why I am sharing this particular story is so that you
understand the importance of your hygiene
and appearance when
going to events. Being
properly dressed for an
event is just as important. Either shave or
have a beard, not in
between (unless you are
starting a new beard),
and of course make sure
you have breath mints.
John Carr
When it comes to dressing, make sure you
dress the part of what your business happens to be. If
you are a pool cleaner you may not have to wear a suit
to a regular Chamber of Commerce event, however if
you are going to an awards dinner you should dust off
the suit and make it look good. Also, you should always
keep in mind the dress code for certain facilities. I was
involved in a networking group for years and we met at
local private country club and we had a strict dress code
for the meeting that we had to enforce for the club. I
truly appreciated that. The bottom line is you should
always be ready to meet your next biggest client, referral
partner or your existing clients, because you never know
when your next gigantic client or referral source is
standing right in front of you.

Maltz Jupiter Theatre Leads with Twenty-one Carbonell Nominations
Theatre shines with South Florida’s annual equivalent of the Tony Awards®
The Maltz Jupiter Theatre has earned 21 nominations
for the 40th annual Carbonell Awards, South Florida’s
equivalent of the Tony Awards®.
The Theatre garnered the most nominations of any of
the nominated organizations in South Florida. By show,
the Theatre earned 10 nominations for Les Misérables, six
for Billy Elliot The Musical, four for Glengarry Glen Ross
and one for The Wiz. Celebrating the best shows and performances in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach
counties, Carbonell nominations encompass the entire
length of South Florida.
“We are honored and grateful that we are being recognized for four of the shows in our eclectic spectrum of
work – including an epic musical (Les Misérables), a
heartfelt contemporary musical (Billy Elliot The
Musical), a high-octane drama (Glengarry Glen Ross)
and a rarely-produced, reimagined musical (The Wiz),”
said Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s producing artistic director and chief executive. “We are also thrilled for our
friends at Palm Beach Dramaworks, who received 14
nominations. It speaks to the high standard of work that’s
being created here in Palm Beach County.”
In addition to earning double nominations for the
Theatre in six of the categories (doubling the chances of
winning), three of the Theatre’s nominees received double
nominations for both their work at the Theatre and other
theaters: J. Barry Lewis (who earned a Best Director of a
Play nomination for the Theatre’s production of
Glengarry Glen Ross and for Buried Child at Palm Beach
Dramaworks), Elizabeth Dimon (who earned a Best
Supporting Actress in a Musical nomination for her performance in the Theatre’s production of Billy Elliot The
Musical and a Best Supporting Actress in a Play nomination for her role in Summer Shorts at City Theatre) and
Rob Donohoe (who earned a Best Supporting Actor in a
Play nomination for his role in Glengarry Glen Ross, as
well as a Best Actor nomination for his role in Buried
Child at Palm Beach Dramaworks).
“I credit much of our success to the local and national
artists – including actors, directors, musical directors and
designers – who contribute their creative talent to the
Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s productions,” Kato said. “There is
remarkable work being produced here in South Florida,
and we’d like to congratulate all of the artists and designers who have been nominated.”
The nominations come just weeks before the Theatre’s
much-anticipated unveiling of shows for its 2016/17 season, set to be announced Feb. 8.
And the Theatre’s current season is far from over, as the
stage heats up with the current hit show The Will Rogers
Follies: A Life in Revue (onstage through January 31) and
Peter Morgan’s riveting drama Frost/Nixon (February 7 –
21). Closing out the season is the classic Tony Award®winning musical Kiss Me, Kate (March 8 – 27).
The winners will be announced at the 40th annual
Carbonell Awards ceremony, set to be held on Monday,
April 4, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in
Fort Lauderdale.
The not-for-profit Maltz Jupiter Theatre has become
one of Florida’s preeminent professional theatres, committed to production and education through its collaborations with local and national artists. Currently the state’s
largest award-winning regional theatre, the Theatre draws
100,000 people annually, serves a subscription base of
nearly 7,600 and has world-class classroom facilities in
support of its Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts,
which serves hundreds of youth and adults. The Theatre
is a member of the prestigious League of Resident
Theatres and has earned numerous Carbonell Awards,
South Florida’s highest honor for artistic excellence,
including the prestigious Bill Von Maurer Award for
Theatrical Excellence. For more information about the
Theatre’s upcoming shows and Conservatory, visit
