Rood Landscape Receives National Environmental
Improvement Award
The Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce congratulates longtime Chamber member, Treasure Coast
Irrigation/Rood Landscape for earning a prestigious
National Environmental Improvement Award presented to them in October. Owners of TCI/Rood, Tom
Balling, current Chamber Board of Directors President,
and Scott Fay accepted the award on behalf of all of
their staff who worked together to make this the outstanding, award-winning landscape project that it is.
The Professional Landcare Network (PLANET), an
international association serving landscape professionals, awarded their 2012 Grand Prize for the
Environmental Improvement Awards to local landscape
contractor, Rood Landscape, LLC, of Hobe Sound.
The prize was awarded for the Jupiter Inlet
Lighthouse Project, an environmentally and historically
sensitive site in Palm Beach County. Rood Landscape
was tasked with eradicating invasive plant materials that
had colonized around the lighthouse, preventing future
soil erosion, and providing an appropriate plant palette
for the site’s proximity to the ocean environment.
Rood also faced a unique challenge - protecting the
native Indian-shell mound the lighthouse was built on.
“As the site has enormous archeological significance, no
digging could take place without an archeologist present,” reported project manager Ron Vekeman.
The “exotic” sansevieria at the site was carefully
removed, and after an erosion control geo-grid fabric
was applied at the north side of the lighthouse to assure
stabilization, the new planting took place. A plant
palette of approved native plants was chosen for their
ability to withstand the site’s environmental elements,
including proximity to the coastal waterways and the
Atlantic Ocean. New irrigation was provided by Rood
Landscape’s sister company, Treasure Coast Irrigation.
PLANET’s Environmental Improvement Awards program is designed to reward independent interiorscapers
and landscape and lawn care professionals who execute
superior projects. The overall Grand Prize is awarded to
one project Nation-wide, which demonstrates expertise
December 2012
and superiority in the green industry.
“We are honored to be this year’s recipient of the
PLANET Awards Grand Prize, and are thankful for the
opportunity to contribute to such a valuable project,”
said Tom Balling, Rood Landscape President, of the
Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Project.
Rood Landscape was founded in 1964 by local pioneer Roy S. Rood. Owners Tom Balling and Scott Fay
strive to carry forward Mr. Rood’s legacy of excellence
in the green industry, employing over 150 landscape
and irrigation designers, managers, and installers. The
company and its leaders put a constant focus on core
values, social contract, and commitment to outstanding customer service.

time. They believe “that if your work ethic is good,
your company will grow.” Currently Tom Klause
and his sister, Katie Klause Newitt are co-owers of
the business.
From a small one-truck operation working out of
a tiny garage, they have grown into a 45,000 square
foot, fully air-conditioned, state-of-the-art facility
with multiple trucks of all sizes. Company Vice
President, Katie Klause Newitt, states that, “We
have become the area’s most trusted transportation
and relocation professionals. As a local, familyowned and operated company some of the same customers who came to us in our early days still depend
on A-1 for their moving and storage needs.”
A-1 Moving & Storage has been an Atlas Agent
since 1974. They are members in good standing
with the American Movers and Warehouseman’s
Association, Florida Movers and Warehouseman’s
Association, the Jupiter-Tequesta-Hobe Sound
Association of Realtors, most of the local Chambers
of Commerce as well as many other business and
civic organizations around the area. They are
licensed with the State of Florida and on the Treasure
Coast to perform moving and storage services.
Local Martin County representative, Larry
Schilder, says, “All of us at A-1 Moving & Storage
are very pleased to continue our relationships with
the many Realtors, associations, builders and companies that we work with. We have demonstrated
that when they refer a customer to us, that customer
will receive the highest level of service.” President,
Tom Klause concurs, “When a customer calls us,
they are not merely getting a ‘mover’ they are getting
a long-term partner who is genuinely interested in
their needs and concerns.”
A-1 Moving and Storage is located at 15070
Corporate Road N, Jupiter, FL 33478. You can contact Larry Schilder at 561-625-0600 or call his

• FINANCIAL FOCUS •
Don’t Overlook Financial Risks in Retirement
Submitted By Andy Andersen, CFP, Edward Jones Financial Advisor, 772- 545-9638
When you retire, you may well have accomplished
some important financial goals, such as sending your
children through college and paying off your mortgage.
Yet, you can’t relax just yet, because your retirement
could easily last two or three decades, which means
you’ll need at least two or three decades’ worth of
income — which, in turn, means you’ll need the proper savings and investment strategies in place. And, just
as importantly, you’ll also need to be aware of the types
of risk that could threaten these strategies.
Let’s consider some of these risks:
• Longevity — None of us can say for sure how long
we’ll live. But it's still important to have an estimate,
based on your health and family history. So if you think
you may live, for 25 years in retirement, you’ll want to
withdraw enough from your investments each year to
enjoy a comfortable lifestyle — but not so much that
you deplete your funds before the 25 years have passed.
• Inflation — We’ve experienced pretty mild inflation over the past few years. But over time, even a low
rate of inflation can seriously erode your purchasing
power. To illustrate: If your current monthly costs are
$3,000, with only a 3% annual inflation rate, that
would be about $4,000 in 10 years. And in 25 years at
that same rate, your monthly costs will have more than
doubled, to about $6,200. To help protect yourself
against inflation risk, it's important to have at least
some investments that offer growth potential, rather
than only owning fixed-income vehicles, such as certificates of deposit (CDs). You’ll also want to consider
sources of rising income potential, such as dividendpaying stocks. (Keep in mind, though, that stocks can
reduce or discontinue dividends at any time and are
subject to market fluctuation and loss of principal.)
• Market Fluctuations — When you retire and begin
taking withdrawals from your investment portfolio —
that is, when you begin selling off investments — you’d
obviously like prices to be high. After all, the classic piece
of investment advice is “buy low, sell high.” But it’s
impossible to try to “time” the market this way, as it will
always fluctuate. That’s why you may want to consider
sources of income whose value is not dependent on what’s
happening in the financial markets. Your financial advisor may be able to recommend investments that can provide you with this type of income stream.
• Low interest rates — Many retirees depend on
fixed-rate investments for a good portion of their
retirement income — so it’s a real challenge when
interest rates are low. Consequently, when you retire,
you’ll certainly need to be
aware of the interest-rate
environment and the income
you can expect from these
investments. Longer-term
fixed-rate vehicles may be
tempting, as they typically
offer higher rates than shorter-term ones, but these longer
term investments may have
Andy Andersen, CFP
more price fluctuation and
inflation risk than shorterterm investments. Consequently, you'll still likely
need balance between short, intermediate, and longterm investments to provide for a portion of your
income in retirement.
Retirement can be a rewarding time in your life. And
you can help make your retirement years even more
enjoyable by understanding the relevant investment
risks and taking steps to address them.
