September 2015 - Peninsula Yacht Club
September 2015
The Watch
Volume 223
The 23rd Annual
Peninsula Cup Regatta
September 18-20
This is the premier regatta on Lake Norman, and one of the few regattas
that always has a Cruising Division. The competition in the Spinnaker
and Non-spinnaker Divisions is intense, but the Cruising Division is a
great way to race even if your boat is not in racing trim. If you are a novice
racer, this is the perfect opportunity to experience a first class sailing event.
See flyer insert for more details.

Our 2015 Summer Camp Season is over and it has been a huge
success. I would like to take this time to thank all of you who have
trusted us to host your kids for the summer, it has been a pleasure. I
would also like to thank the team; Jenna Brunnhoelzl, Tiffany Adams,
Grace Desena, Christian Honaker, Seth Furman, Breana Jenkins,
Audrey Landau, Grayson Dearman, Ally Bock and Lauren Bock; who
all work so hard to make our camps not only a FUN experience, but an
educational one as well. I would also like to thank Harry Smith and
Bruce Furman
William
Bowden for successfully running the first ever Advanced
General Manager
Sailing program, as well as teaching several kids how to sail. Amor
Camatcho also deserves our recognition for a great pool season and a very well-run swim
club. Great job to all of you, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for next year.
You will be happy to know that Jenna Brunnhoelzl, after leading yet another successful
Summer Camp Program at the PYC, has accepted the Activities Director position. So
many of the Club kids know her and will be happy to see her around the Club more often!
In other exciting news, we have put out a new PYC Lifestyle membership video! Please take
the time to view the video on the Club’s website homepage www.PeninsulaYacht.com.

Swim Club News
This past summer was the season of
the Penguins! Our swim club was the
largest yet, with over 50 kids! Our
Banquet was held July 26 where
swimmers were recognized for their
achievements both in the water and as
all around team members. The team
showed so much improvement in the
water and we hope they had as much
fun as we did coaching them, but
nevertheless we couldn’t have done it
without the help of so many parents
bringing them to practices and early
morning meets! Thank you Parents!
Coaches (Amor Camatcho, Banks Duprees,
Ashley Hearn & Jacob Matthews)
Best time for boating
Cooler temperatures, fewer boaters on the water and beautiful scenery! Just because Labor Day is the standard mark of season end doesn’t
mean it’s time to pack it up for the winter. If you do…you will miss
out!!!
September is also a great time of year to grab a sailboat and enjoy
some relaxing time on the water. Don’t know how to sail? Don’t let
Harry Smith
that
stop you! We can teach you. Don’t have a boat, well we do! Your
Marina Manager
PYC has a number of different sailboats that range from youth to
adults sizes. Some fast and some slow but remember you will only go as fast as the wind
blows.
Shore Power Cord
Inspection
Let’s make
September be your shore
power inspection month.
Take a few minutes and
inspected your cord entirely. Start at the boat side and make
your way to shore side. Look for any burn
marks, chaffed areas, “chewed” areas, and
don’t forget the area under the dock!!! If
you need assistance please let you marina
staff know and we will be happy to help. If
you need a cord replaced call or email the
store and we will pull the old one and
replace with a new one. Cord protectors
are also available.
End of Season
IN-WATER BOAT SHOW
September 5
10 - 5pm
Come see all the end of season
specials the local dealers have!

Boat Handling Instruction
The fall is a great time of year to get that
special instruction you’ve been wanting.
Whether power or sail we have you covered.
If interested call the store or email and we can
set you up with one on one instruction.

Winterization Workshop
October 3
10 am -12 pm
When do I winterize or
should I? What are the
risks involved in the
geographical location we
live in? These are just some of the questions
that boaters might have.
Enjoy this workshop of open discussion and
knowledge. Please make your reservation by
contacting Harry Smith at 704-895-8996 ext
28 or by emailing hsmith@peninsulayacht.com.

Commodore’s Comments
There is no denying it. Participation in sailing, both for recreation and
sport, has been decreasing for some time. Sure, we can debate the causes
and even come up with a few ways to turn the trend around. Perhaps
you might not even be concerned as your preference for lake enjoyment
is power. The truth is that sailing, and all that it entails, is part of the
life blood of a healthy yachting community. Our yachting heritage, our
customs, all originate in sailing. Like our own family customs we should
ensure that these are passed down from generation to generation.
Focusing on our youth programs and events to start, PYC is making
Paul Doucette
Sail Fleet Captain
a significant effort to strengthen our sailing community at PYC and
around the lake. For starters our GM, Bruce, has assembled a Sailing
Task Force consisting of volunteers who are looking to build lake wide sailing participation.
This summer PYC increased the sailing camps to 5 weeks, two of which are for advanced sailors. My two daughters participated in the first week and then took me sailing on Father’s Day.
What a great gift!
PYC has purchased three new dingy fleets to support the sailing camps and the possibility of
building a sailing team over time. We are introducing a new youth regatta this October, The
Pumpkin Regatta, which will be open to all sailing levels and be another venue for youth
competition on the lake.
We hosted a level 1 sailing instructors program this past spring and are looking at hosting other
programs associated with US Sailing and others. Just this past year PYC was indoctrinated into
the National Sailing Hall of Fame. The only inland yacht club to do so. All this in just the first
year is impressive but we have significant hopes for the coming years too. It will take time and
requires the support of our entire sailing community.
Of course there is our flagship event coming up on September 18-20th, The 23rd Annual
Peninsula Cup Regatta. Members of the three LKN yacht clubs, PYC, OYC, and LNYC, will
compete in this PHRF event. This is a great regatta for experienced racers and cruisers alike. I
encourage all of our sailors to get their boats out of their slips and participate. If you need some
support or encouragement please contact me and we will give you everything you need. If you
don’t have a boat then you can always be crew or come help with the Race Committee duties.
I hope to see lots of new faces participating this year.
View from the Fore Deck
Another beautiful summer is coming to an end but with it comes the start of the Fall
sailing season on Lake Norman. If your sailing calendar isn’t full then you are surely not
trying. Here are a few of the many events coming up.
PYC Fellowship Race – Fall Series

23rd Annual Peninsula Cup Regatta
Sep 18 - 20
Leukemia Cup Regatta

Pumpkin RegattaOct 10
Wilmer Cup Regatta
Oct 31 – Nov 1
Congratulations to our PYC Fellowship Race, Spring Series winner, Sam Reeves
(Mad Hatter). As always Sam and his crew demonstrate that being consistent and skilled
wins the day. (cover photo)
We need your help. We are looking for volunteers to help with Race Committee for our PYC
events. Please reach out to Paul Doucette at padoucette@gmail.com if you have any interest.
We will give you all the training you need and there isn’t a huge commitment. We really need
to build the ranks of experienced race committee to reduce the burden on the few that we have.
