August 26, 2016 3 HOSPITELL The Junior Volunteers and their leaders gathered for a group photo following the program on Junior Volunteer Recognition Night on Thursday, Aug. 18. Junior Volunteers bid Backus farewell Local students who have been taking part in the Backus Volunteer Bridge Program were honored during Junior Volunteer Recognition Night at the hospital on Aug. 18. Junior Volunteer coordinator Heather Plecan, a nursing major at the University of Connecticut, thanked the participants for their service. “What you guys did is incredible: donating precious days from your summer to volunteer. Not all high schoolers would do what you Plecan have done. While your friends were watching Netflix, you were watching procedures in X-ray. While your friends were going on walks to hatch their Pokémon eggs, you were pushing wheelchairs down the halls and having conversations with patients.” This summer, 84 Junior Volunteers have given more than 5,800 hours of combined service to the hospital, its patients and staff and more than 120 COVER STORY On the horizon n Eighteen graduating junior volunteers and their college plans: Taylor Bargnesi River Bible Institute Ministry Fatima Barlan Eastern Connecticut State University Social Work Simon Bohn Union College Neuroscience Amanda Callegari UConn Neuroscience Alexandria Christie Salve Regina Biology Taylor Dudek Bay Path UniversityPre-Physicians Assistant Sarah French Rhode Island College Nursing Jennifer Loo UConn Mathematics Jenna Muller Curry College Nursing Nithya Prakash George Washington History & International Affairs Seda Sahin UConn Biology Hinal Shah UConn-Avery Point Biology Lauryn Tetreault UConn Allied Health Sciences Olivia Triplett Northeastern University Biology Felicity Wang Brown University Economics & History Toriann Winnick University of Hartford Radiology Technology Terrance Zhang UConn Biomedical Engineering Emma Zoubek Stony Brook UniversityPre-Med Career Shadows according to Mary Brown, CAVS, Backus Manager of Volunteer and Guest Services. “Thank you for your commitment to be nice, work hard, network and shadow. Garden vegetables and herbs are not used for patient dishes. The garden’s borders were built using environmentally-friendly wood, and it was fertilized using compost generated by all-natural materials right on the hospital grounds. “The compost came from the leaves we’ve removed from the ground, grass clippings, wood chips from fallen branches, weeds, and leftover mulch,” says John Grenier from Plant Operations. Karen Laboy from food services says maintaining the garden means a little extra work but it’s worth it. “It’s awesome and it tastes great,” says Laboy. Helping our garden grow WHAT’S UP AT WINDHAM Gail Charron, left, and Karen Laboy, from Windham Food Services, show off some of the fresh vegetables picked from the hospital’s garden. The garden is the result of a team effort by food services, plant operations and the Windham Hospital Foundation.
