News from your excellent-rated school district!
Ohio Changes How It Rates Your Local School
Ohio is changing how it tells parents
and communities about the academic
progress of their schools. The new
Local Report Card System is based
upon A to F letter grades like most of
us received when we were students.
This system is intended to make it
easier for everyone to know just how
schools and districts are performing.
The new approach takes the place
of the existing system that used six
labels to describe school performance:
Excellent with Distinction, Excellent,
Effective, Continuous Improvement,
Academic Watch and Academic
Emergency.
Here’s how the new system works.
Schools and districts will receive letter
grades in six broad categories:
• Achievement: How well students
are doing against national standards
of success.
• Gap Closing: This measure looks
at whether students in all racial and
demographic groups are making gains.
• Graduation Rate: High schools and
districts will be graded on how well they
do helping students earn diplomas.
• Progress: This will include grades
for gains made by students classified
as gifted and those with disabilities so
that no group falls through the cracks.
• K-3 Literacy: This measure looks
at how many students in kindergarten
through Grade 3 are reading on grade
level.
• Prepared for Success: This
component
measures
students’
college and career readiness.
Together, grades in these six areas
will be combined to produce a single
overall performance grade for the
school or district. While grades in most
specific areas will begin in August
2013, overall grades will not be issued
until August 2015. This will give schools
time to adjust to the new system and
focus their efforts on being successful
in all areas that are being measured.
Ohio’s new Local Report Cards will
also include other important information,
such as how many students earn
college credits in high school, graduate
with honors, receive credentials that
prepare them to directly enter the
workforce and if they are ready for
college and careers. These items,
which will be graded as a group but not
individually, are for information only and
will not be assigned letter grades.
In coming months, the State Board of
Education will be working with educators
and communities to determine how
to award letter grades in each of the
categories listed above. The new
report cards will be published online
starting in August. For updates and
more information, go to newreportcard.

Spelling Champ for Fourth
Consecutive Year
Tuesday, January 29, Ephraim
Oliphant, a seventh-grader at
Crestwood Middle School joined the
spelling dynasty of champs along
with Amanda Fosnight, David Hill,
and his older brother, Sam Oliphant.
Callie Mo, an eighth grader, came in
fifth place this year and qualified to
advance with Ephraim to the AkronSummit Public Library auditorium
on March 9 at 1 p.m. to compete in
the Akron Beacon Journal Regional
Spelling Bee. Although Madeline
Turner did not place, she performed
with confidence and dignity and
remained to the end of the bee to
support her fellow spellers.
Congratulations to all on a job well
done, and good
luck to Ephraim
and Callie.
Crestwood Teams with Hiram College to
Promote Student Growth
Crestwood Local Schools is fortunate to have Hiram
College as a close neighbor to form partnerships
with that aid student growth, for both the Crestwood
students and Hiram students. Currently, Crestwood
schools and Hiram are involved in two partnerships
– a social skills group at the primary school and a
tutoring program at the middle school.
The primary school is worked with students from
Hiram’s Human Growth
and
Development
Class for four weeks.
The focus of the sophomore class was on the socialemotional development of young children. The college
students partnered with kindergarten, first and second
grade students to engage in literacy activities, create
coping strategies to deal with emotions and to learn
how to play cooperative games.
One Hiram student, summing up her experience,
“Every Thursday morning, I had the honor of getting to
know three individual students for four straight weeks. During this field experience, I
was able to spend time with each student and learn about their interests, personalities
and families.”
The project encouraged the
students to continue to follow our Crestwood Pride
as a School Wide behavior expectation program.
The middle school has benefitted from the
Hiram partnership for five years. Students enrolled
in Human Growth and Development and Learning
Theory class. The placement at Crestwood allows
gives the Hiram students the opportunity to apply
the
social/
emotional and growth and development theory
they are learning in class, while fulfilling
requirements for field experience, said Roxanne
Sorrick, Associate Professor at Hiram College.
Meanwhile, middle school students benefit from
small group and one-on-one tutoring leading up
to the Ohio Achievement Assessment in April.

Superintendent’s Letter . . .
Last month I attended a long awaited
meeting in Columbus where Governor
Kasich spoke to superintendents about
his proposed changes to school funding.
Kasich’s proposal is another attempt of
many to revamp school funding in an
effort to comply with the Ohio Supreme
Mr. Joseph Iacano
Court ruling in the late 1990s that declared
Superintendent
Ohio’s funding formula unconstitutional.
At the meeting superintendents were given the impression
that, under this proposal, any district that had local property
valuations of less than $250,000 per pupil would likely
receive increases in state aid. Since Crestwood's per pupil
valuations are approximately $143,000 per pupil it appeared
that Crestwood would qualify for an increase in state funding.
He also stated that no district would receive less state funding
next year than it did this year.
Several days after the meeting the state released projections
for each district in the state. The projections for Crestwood
showed NO change in funding...no increase, no reduction.
Newspapers across the state, including local newspapers,
have quoted many superintendents and treasurers who have
indicated that they do not fully understand how the projections
for individual school districts were derived. We too are trying
to reconcile the apparent discrepancies between what was
stated at the meeting and the district projections we received.
What is the bottom line with state funding and Crestwood?
First, keep in mind that the governor has simply made a
proposal and that nothing is law until it is debated, modified,
and voted on by the legislature between April and June. In
the meantime, we will be sharing our thoughts with local

Children who are five years old on or before Aug. 1,
2013 are eligible to attend Kindergarten during the 20132014 school year. Information packets for registration are
available at the Primary School or on the district web site at

In addition to registration paperwork, parents or guardians
are required to show two proofs of residency, the child’s
official birth certificate issued by the State, and their social
security card. Student’s immunizations must be up to date
for entry to school in the Fall.
A parent information night will be held April 11, 2013 at 6

legislators as to how the funding proposal can be improved
to further assist Crestwood and similar districts.
Secondly, it is important to remember that if state funding
for Crestwood is flatlined, i.e. no additional funds but also no
cuts, then Crestwood will still be at least a little bit better off
for the next two years than we originally projected, since we,
like most districts, built anticipated funding reductions into our
financial forecasts.
The accompanying chart attempts to give an overview of
the funding structure as it stands now. Look for additional
updates in Crestwood Comments and area papers as the
budget process continues to unfold over the next few months.
Governors’ Proposed Funding Program: Key Points
This is the governor’s proposal----it is not law. It is likely to go through
significant analysis and recommendations for changes from legislators and
lobbyists in both the Ohio House and the Ohio Senate before it will be presented
as legislation. Final legislation could be presented in late spring or early summer.
Proposal
Impact on Crestwood
No district would receive less funds This would help Crestwood since
in FY 14 and FY 15 than they do this we have built reductions in state
year (FY13)
funds into our forecast
5.9% and 3.2% increases in state- Affect on Crestwood would be
wide funding for FY14 and FY15
determined by how the increases are
distributed to school districts across
the state. Governor’s projections for
Crestwood show flat funding for up to
two years…no increase, no cuts.

Grant funds available for innovative Not clear, but appears to be related
programs
to shared services and other costcontainment initiatives
$8 million for school safety grants
Allocation method not yet clear
Every district would get as much
from the first 20 mills of property
tax as well-off districts that have
$250,000 of property value per
student (this would be at the current
96th percentile)
Crestwood appears to be in the
middle percentiles since local
property currently generates
about $143,000 per pupil. If this
portion of the plan becomes law it
would seem that Crestwood would
receive additional funds. Individual
district projections, however, show
no increase in funds. We are
trying to understand this apparent
contradiction. One possible
explanation is that the state’s per
pupil funding has been reduced from
about $5700 to $5000, so even an
increase based on property values
would be offset by this per pupil
reduction.

High School Hosts Third Annual Eighth Grade Night
On the evening of Tuesday, February
12, Crestwood High School held their
third annual Eighth Grade Night for
parents and students of the incoming
graduating class of 2017. Around three
hundred parents and students flooded
the halls of the high school as they took
in the sights and sounds of what it will be
like to be a student at CHS. Composed of
three separate informational segments,
Eighth Grade Night is the first real step
that Crestwood eighth graders and
their families take in order to begin the
transition from a middle school to a high
school student.
Eighth graders and their families
were invited to spend time hearing from
college representatives from Kent State
University and Cuyahoga Community
College on how to schedule high
school classes depending on students’
future goals, were given information
on the uses and importance of college
readiness tests, and were offered some
insights on the college application
process. In a separate segment, parents
and students heard from their future
Crestwood High School counselors on
educational options available to them,
what it takes to become a graduate of
CHS, and some guidelines for building a
freshman schedule.
The highlight of Crestwood High
School’s Eighth Grade Night, however,
is always the showcase segment, and
this year was no exception. Forty five
tables were placed around the CHS
gymnasium to give the guests an
opportunity to experience all aspects
of high school activities, ranging from
academics, to clubs, to sports and
recreation, to music. Both current CHS
students and faculty worked hard on
table presentation in order to relay as
much useful information to guests as
possible, as well as to compete for the
coveted “Eighth Grade Night Showcase
Table
Winner”
acknowledgment.
Judging for the winning table is based
upon the appearance of the table, the
level of creativity in table presentation,
and how clearly the message of the
table was portrayed. Our 2013 Eighth
Grade Night Showcase Winner was the
CHS Science Club table for its highly
informative and interactive setup; as
well as for the evident enthusiasm of its
presenters.

Show What You Know on Statewide Assessments,
What Families Can do to Help Students be Successful
By Mary Ann Strenk, Coordinator of Curriculum and Instruction
State testing time has arrived and students throughout the district
have the opportunity to show all they have learned this year. Judging
from the exciting projects, and hard-working teachers and students,
Crestwood should have no problem earning Excellent status again.
At school we have taught the content, demonstrated test-taking
strategies, and targeted individual weaknesses for intervention, but
there are other helpful items your child can do at home.
EAT: Balanced meals with protein-rich foods for dinner and
breakfast.
SLEEP: 10-12 hours should be the goal, especially if you have
multiple days of testing in a row. Wake up a little early so the morning
routine isn’t rushed.
TALK: Talking to your child about the testing and what it involves
can help relieve some of the stress inherent to the process. Children
are not expected to know everything on each test. Encourage them
to simply do their best. This is their opportunity to show all they know.
PRACTICE: The following site is a great resource for previously
released test questions with explanations of the answers. Students
should be familiar with the format and content.

MAKE IT FUN: Surprise your child with a note in their lunch and
words of encouragement.

What Should I do if my Child gets Head Lice?
Head lice are active year round but seem
to have waves of increased incidences.
Students who come to school with lice or nits
¼” from the scalp will be sent home. They
can return to school after being treated.
The following information from the Ohio
Department of Health may help to keep these insects in check.
2. Remove the nits. Work under a good light and divide the
hair in sections. Look through each section of hair for nits,
starting at the scalp and working outward. Remove the nits by
pulling down the length of the hair with your fingernails. Put
the nits in a trash bag and throw them away. A metal lice comb
may help.
3. Clean the home. Wash all bedding, towels and recently
worn clothing in hot water and dry in a hot dryer for 20 minutes

Middle School and Hilltop Church
Compete for Acts of Kindness
Prior to the winter break Reverend Jeff Jackson, pastor
of Hilltop Church, challenged the middle school students to
compete against his entire congregation to see who could
initiate the most acts of kindness in one day. If the church
won, the students would have to conduct a food drive and
if the students won, the church would provide an ice cream
party to the students. Middle school students quickly accepted
the challenge.
The middle school students were able to record more acts
of kindness in one day, earning the building-wide ice cream
party. However, to show their appreciation, students still held
the canned food drive and collected 255 cans for 4Cs in just
two days.
The contest was part of Rachel’s Challenge, a program
to promote kindness and compassion throughout the
school, the district and the community. Rachel’s Challenge
is a program started by Darrell and Sandy Scott, the father
and stepmother of Rachel Scott, the first student killed in
the Columbine shootings in April 1999. The middle school
initiated the program the beginning of the 2012-2013 school
year.

What a great way to honor a family members’ life, that
inspirational teacher, a major milestone or the life of a special
someone…..plant a tree that will continue to grow and flourish
and represent all of these.
The Outdoor Education Committee established the
Memorial Tree Garden at the Primary and Intermediate
Schools in 2005 and would like to continue this great tradition.
R.C. Giel Landscaping., a local landscape company, has
made available a selection of native trees for the area. These
trees will be planted on the Elementary Schools Campus.
The cost of each tree is $250. The price includes the planting
of the tree, care and a plaque. The permanent plaque will
state the species of the tree, the date, and the name of the
person, family, group or event that is being honored.
If you are interested in placing an order
for such a wonderful gift, you can obtain an
order form on the district web site or from
