REST IN PEACE
Your prayers are requested for the
soul of Gilbert Sasek, brother of Ed
Sasek. “May his soul and the souls of
all the faithful departed through the
mercy of God rest in peace.”
SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN
ORDINARY TIME
Focus: The Power of God
is His mercy.
The Lord desires that we be with Him
in eternity, but He will not violate
our consciences in the process. For
that reason, He allows us to make
mistakes and then offers us His
mercy. The experience of the mercy
of God teaches us about His love
and invites us to love our neighbors
as well.
In the first reading, the author of
the Book of Wisdom tells us that
God’s power is kind and merciful.
Saint Paul teaches in Romans that
the Holy Spirit helps our weakness.
Matthew’s Gospel today relates the
story of the wheat and weeds, where
the imperfections of life are allowed
for the sake of the faithful.

THE GOD SQUAD:
PILGRIMAGE TO THE
CALIFORNIA MISSION
(JULY 24-AUGUST 4, 2014)
For the past few years, the God
Squad has been raising funds to
travel to California to visit the
missions. There are 21 missions that
comprise California’s Mission Trail.
The first mission, Mission San Diego
de Alcala, began on July 16, 1769 almost seven years before the United
States declared our independence
from Great Britain, July 4, 1776 – by
Blessed Junipero Serra, a Spanish
Franciscan friar. We hope to visit at
least 18 of these missions starting
from San Diego and ending in San
Francisco. The Pilgrimage to the
California Missions is an opportunity
for our youth to encounter how
our Catholic faith influenced the
development of the west coast
and many aspects of our American
history. It is a great opportunity for
our youth to see the missions as
a standing reminder of an earlier
time, a time long past, a time of
simplicity that existed without the
smart phones or the internet. We
are taking 36 youth and 10 adults
with us on this pilgrimage. The cost
of the trip is a little over $20,000. If
you would like to make a monetary
contribution, please contact Fr. John
at the parish office. Thank you for
supporting your youth group, the
God Squad.
THANK YOU VBS VOLUNTEERS
Thank you to all those who volunteered their time for this
year’s VBS. It was a huge success, and I owed it all to you.
I could not have done this without your talent, enthusiasm
and love of the faith. Again, thank you to Phil Berger,
Mary Cassenti, Sandra Dean, Amanda Dehner, Haylie
Elmendorf, Karen Gula, Marti Holmes, Mary Inman, Doris
Jackson, Joe Kane, Paul Kallal, Cathy McNamee, Jim
Keenan, Daniel Nosce, Chris Schuneman, John Schwegel,
Carolyn Simansky, Tammy Stilwell, Scott Wade, Debbie
Wardein, Mary Wicklund, Mimi Wuellner, Nekcoe Yungling
and all the youth. God bless you for your generosity to
our children and the church. Fr. John

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING OUR
MISSION APPEAL ON JULY 26-27.
Our Parish community would like to welcome Sr. Irene D.
Baquiran, MQHM, a representative from Mary Queen of
Heaven Missionaries from Cebu, Philippines for this year’s
2014 Missionary Cooperative Plan of our Diocese.
We are privileged to support them as they fight prostitution
and poverty through perfect love and charity.
Mary Queen of Heaven Missionaries is a religious community
founded in the Philippines. They rescue women and
children who are victims of human trafficking through their
center called “Home of Love”. Programs and services such
as: SHELTER, FOOD AND NUTRITION, PSYCHOLOGICAL
TREATMENT AND TESTING, SPIRITUAL FORMATION,
EDUCATION, LIVELIHOOD AND SKILLS TRAINING,CHILD
CARE AND RE-INTEGRATION PROGRAM, are given free
of charge.
To prevent poor children from being victims of human
trafficking they support poor children in the Philippines
who can’t afford a high school education. We encourage
everyone to participate and support our Missionary
Cooperative Plan.
NEW MISSION FOR ST. MATTHEWS CHURCH
As most of you know, St. Mary’s Middle School currently
occupies the former St. Matthew’s Grade School, and often
uses the St. Matthew’s Church for various occasions. But
sadly, the beautiful St. Matthew’s Church, where many of you
grew up, received your sacraments, and hold so dear, has
sat empty and unused so much of the time. St. Mary’s has
been so fortunate to be able to utilize this wonderful space,
and in an effort to further expand our ever growing mission,
the St. Matthew’s Church will be undergoing a “renewal.”
Renovations have begun to create a new Parish Center at St.
Matthew’s Church. The new parish center will house events
such as funeral luncheons, bible studies, church groups and
meetings, etc. The children of St. Mary’s Middle School will
still use the center for things such as adoration, confessions,
Christmas programs, and the middle school musical.
Many have asked why we wouldn’t continue to use the
Suddes Hall facility as our parish center and for our funeral
luncheons. The reason is that the Diocese is concerned
there is a safety issue. During a recent Safety Audit, it was
brought to our attention that opening up our gym for funeral
luncheons and other daytime events really compromises the
safety of our school children at St. Mary’s. Unfortunately,
there is no way to block off the gym and the restrooms from
the rest of the school to keep our school secure. The St.
Matthew’s Church building is a stand alone, secure building
that will have no access to the middle school.
The Parish Center on the St. Matthew’s Campus will be
equipped with a kitchen, tables and chairs, and a stage. The
pews have been removed, the new carpet and tile has been
ordered, and the construction has started on the kitchen.
We are very excited for the center to be completed early this
fall. Please watch the bulletin for more details on when the
center will be available for booking and for the upcoming
open house.
E- GIVING
Would you find it helpful to
have your offerings debited
directly from your bank account
as you probably do with other
obligations? St. Mary’s offers
electronic giving for those of you
who wish to have contributions
transferred electronically to the
church’s account. If you have
plans to travel this summer,
electronic giving gives you a
convenient way to keep up with
your intended offerings. Simply
go to our website and click
the e-giving icon or complete
and return an electronic giving
authorization form to get started.
Authorization forms can be put
in an envelope and dropped in
the collection basket or returned
to the parish office.
To sign up online go to www.
stmarysalton.com and click the
e-giving icon.
JUST FOR LAUGHS
A guy nearly got away with
stealing several paintings from
the Louvre in Paris. But he
was captured two blocks away
when his lorry ran out of gas.
In response to how he could
mastermind such a crime yet
make such an obvious mistake,
he said: “I had no Monet to buy
Degas to make the Van Gogh.”
