PRAYING THE NEWS
May 15, 2016
And suddenly there came from the sky
a noise like a strong driving wind…
Acts 2:2
Questions for Personal Reflection:
O God, we thank you for your constant
love and continuing renewal – of our
faith, our hearts, our church, and the
world around us. Your Spirit is gentle
but also strong – sometimes surprising
and startling us. Thank you for the
prophets of our times, including Daniel
Berrigan, who are instruments for
uncomfortable but necessary change.
Help us open our hearts and minds to
the truths you speak through them.
Holy Spirit, we trust in you.
Amen. †

STEWARDS AMONG US
BelénVelázquez
I was born in Zulia,
the Venezuelan oil
stateparexcellence.
I am a teacher
graduatedinSpanish
and literature, and
post graduated in
schoolmanagement
& adult education.
During my first
months in Sugar Land, my life revolved
aroundSt.Laurence.Itwasmybeaconand
benchmark for what I did or planned to
carry out. The church seemed an
extraordinaryorganizationandIadmiredits
discipline and variety of ministries and
programs. Upon discovering the existence
oftheLearnSpanishMinistry,Iknewthatit
was where, above all, I wanted to serve.
Mytraining,experienceandpassionformy
mother tongue motivated me. Besides,
teaching adults has been very satisfactory
and the results, amazing. With respect, I
share with the parishioners the following:
we should not live as escapees from
ourselves, nor live outside of our personal
and parochial reality, wasting our inner
wealthandincapacitatingustohelpothers.
Exploring our inner selves and discovering
our hidden talents will make us much
better and open to help others. To
accomplish this, the ministries of St.
Laurence are there, as a range of
possibilities,invitingustoaction.
CatechismCorner
Answerstoyourquestionsfromthe
CatechismoftheCatholicChurch.
Q.Whatisprayer?
A. Prayer is turning the heart toward
God. When a person prays, he enters
into a living relationship with God.
Prayeristhegreatgateleadingintofaith.
Someone who prays no longer lives on
his own, for himself, and by his own
strength. He knows there is a God to
whom he can talk. People who pray
entrust themselves more and more to
God.Evennowtheyseekunionwiththe
one whom they will encounter one day
facetoface.Therefore,theefforttopray
daily is part of Christian life. Of course,
onecannotlearntoprayinthesameway
one learns a technique. As strange as it
sounds, prayer is a gift one obtains
throughprayer.

A.
YES! The bazaar will be back, mark your
calendar! It’s always the 3rd weekend in
October (OCT 15-16). Before you ask, it
will be on the grounds of the Ave Maria
Center (AMC), with BINGO inside the
building, yeah. Of course, the usuals be
there, you know, Indian, Mexican and
