WORSHIP
From Green to Gold — June 26, 2016
We are very blessed here at St. Veronica’s to have wonderful employees. They certainly proved that yet again in a special way last Saturday. That was the evening the parish hosted its annual volunteer dinner.
That is the night we thank all of our volunteers who so faithfully serve our
parish all year long. Our staff people truly are dedicated individuals who
often make great sacrifices to work at a Catholic parish. The salaries are
not high; the hours can be long. Most, if not all, of these do this out of love
for God and His Church. I am very grateful to them for this.
Although reasonably new to St. Veronica’s (this Saturday, the 25th,
is the one year anniversary of my arrival here), it is quite obvious that the
parish staff is outstanding. It is also very obvious that this parish has
many truly generous volunteers who are willing to give so much to make
this the parish it is. I do then want to first thank all of the paid staff for all
they do and for all they did last Saturday. They worked hard to provide a
marvelous evening for our volunteers. I will single out just one of these
people, Diana Acker, who is the parish apostolate coordinator. She is responsible for all of our events as well, so she oversaw all the efforts last
week. Those efforts certainly paid off as it was a beautiful night and a very
fitting way to honor our volunteers. The food was excellent. The entertainment was very conducive to celebrating. The parish hall was aptly decorated. Really everything about the night was exceptional.
I also want to thank our volunteers. No doubt they do what they
do, not for a salary, but out of love of God and this parish. For that reason
I am extremely grateful to all of those who give many hours in many different ways for the sake of this parish, both the church and the school. All
of those who volunteered with the parish over the past year were invited to
the dinner last Saturday. We tried to send a personal invitation to every
known volunteer. Unfortunately, I am sure we missed a few and there are
some who only may be known to God. Of course not everyone was able to
make it last Saturday evening. Those who could and did, I think, thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I heard nothing but positive responses to the
evening.
It has been the custom here to designate two men and two women,
often a husband and wife, who were noted for their contributions to the
parish in terms of service. The designees this year were Gina and Don
McCue and Jennifer and John Van Daele. Gina and Don are extraordinary
ministers of Holy Communion. Gina heads up the Blessed Mother Teresa
Outreach apostolate. She also was the parish representative who led the
diocesan Pilgrimage to the Shrine and regularly assists with other parish
functions. Jennifer and John gave countless hours to many parish activities as well, in particular with anything and everything that included the
youth. In addition Jennifer has been a part time employee of the parish’s
office of religious education. Sadly for us, they and their children are moving this summer. This will be a great loss in many ways, especially with all
that they have been doing. We congratulate both of these couples and
thank them for all they do.
This year we also had a special award, the “Faithful Servant, Beloved Volunteer” designation. This went posthumously to Michael
Greiner, a long time parishioner, who volunteered in numerous ways over
his years here. I wrote about him a couple of months ago after his death in
March. We thank him and his family and continue our prayers for the repose of his soul. Lastly, I again thank everyone, employees and volunteers,
for all they do.

FROM THE PARISH OFFICE
THANK YOU: There are many, many reasons I have to be grateful to the folks at St.
Veronica's. To begin with the most recent
events, it was such a grace and a pleasure to
see so many of you at the Ordination, then
the 10:45 Mass of Thanksgiving the next day
was an extraordinarily beautiful experience
for me. The reception afterwards was phenomenal, far better than what I could have
planned for myself. Thank you so much to
those who were able to make it out for the
Ordination and for those who worked so hard
on the reception. Those who were spiritually
united to us, unable to make it for whatever
reason, I am quite sure Our Lord heard your
prayers for us. Then, throughout the last two
years, the families and friends at St Veronica's have been a tremendous support to me—
(including but not limited to) encouraging
me for homilies that they thought were helpful and giving me some pointers on ways to
improve. It was a great joy to get to know a
good number of the kids (or young men and
women, as the case may be), especially those
involved in Ignite, Ablaze, and altar serving.
Thanks for your warmth and jokes and prayers. Be sure that I remember the folks of St.
Veronica's in my prayers and now in the sacrifice of the Mass. Please keep me in your
prayers.

The Diocese of Arlington is dedicated to managing the temporal and human resources of the
Church as faithful stewards. To aid in this effort,
the diocese has contracted with an independent
service provider, EthicsPoint, so that employees,
volunteers, parishioners, vendors and other interested parties can report concerns regarding
suspected financial and human resource misconduct. Reports are kept confidential and may be
made anonymously, and can be filed via one of
EthicsPoint’s trained specialists at 1-888-2933718.

EDUCATION, CATECHESIS AND EVANGELIZATION
Volunteer with Our Religious Education Program
“In virtue of their baptism, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples . . . . All the baptized, whatever their position in the Church or their level of instruction in the faith, are agents of evangelization . . . .
So what are we waiting for?” Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel
Volunteers are vital to the success of the Religious Education Program. No experience is necessary. Becoming an Assistant Catechist, which is our greatest need at this time, is a great way to start,
and all training is provided. The only requirement is to be a Catholic in good standing with a desire to pass
on the Faith to the children of our Parish. And, all volunteers are eligible for tuition discounts.

WITNESSES TO FREEDOM
STS. THOMAS MORE AND JOHN FISHER
USCCB Fact Sheet
“I die the king’s good servant,
but God’s first.”
(Our Lady of Victories, Kensington, London;
Photo by Fr. Lawrence Lew, OP)
Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher were Renaissance
men. Talented and energetic, they contributed to the
humanist scholarship of early modern England. More
wrote theological and philosophical treatises, while
making a career as a lawyer and government official.
Bishop John Fisher worked as an administrator at Cambridge,
confronted the challenge Martin Luther presented to Christian
Europe, and most importantly served as Bishop of Rochester.
As a bishop, he is notable for his dedication to preaching
at a time when bishops tended to focus on politics.
These men were brilliant. They both corresponded with
Erasmus, who helped Bishop Fisher learn Greek and
Hebrew, and who also famously referred to More as a
man omnium horarium, a man of all seasons.
Above all their accomplishments, these men bore witness to
a deep faith in Christ and his Church. More considered
joining religious life and was assiduous in his devotional
practices. As a married man, he committed himself
wholly to his vocation as a father. At the time, disciplinary
practices with children tended to be severe, but More’s
children testify to his warmth, patience, and generosity.
St. John Fisher was a model shepherd and demonstrated
remarkable humility. He remained in the small Diocese
of Rochester his entire episcopal ministry, devoting himself to
his local church rather than seeking promotion to a larger,
more powerful diocese.
More and Fisher are well-known for opposing King Henry’s divorce.
Ultimately, it was their refusal to sign an oath of supremacy that
led them to be executed. King Henry VIII claimed to be the supreme
head of the Church in England, asserting sovereign power over
English Christians. Neither Fisher nor More could abide this
claim, and their steadfastness to their consciences put them in
conflict with the king. They were convicted of treason.
When More made his way to the gallows, he is said to have
stated, “I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first.” Both More
and Fisher were patriots. They never rose up to incite rebellion
or foment revolution. They were no traitors. But when the law of the
king came into conflict with the law of Christ, they chose Christ.
These men gave their lives for the freedom of the Church and
for freedom of conscience. They bear witness to the truth that
no government can make a claim on a person’s soul.
Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher,
pray that we too will be good servants to our country,
but God’s first!

WITNESSES TO FREEDOM
STS. PETER AND PAUL
USCCB Fact Sheet
“We are witnesses of these things.”
Peter and Paul are often seen in the Church as
a complementary pair. Peter represents the
institutional church, while Paul represents the
charismatic or spiritual church. Both are associated
with the church in Rome. But what binds them
together, above all, is that they were utterly
seized by Jesus’ message.
(Fr. Lawrence Lew, OP)
The New Testament often portrays Peter as rash and headstrong. One minute, he is a paragon of faith; the next, he has
completely misunderstood what Jesus wants. He frequently does not seem to get what is going on, and he even denies
Jesus when Jesus is about to be executed. And yet, despite his shortcomings and weaknesses, he has a heart for the Lord. He
is the Prince of the Apostles, and as the first bishop of Rome, he holds a special place in the hearts of Catholic Christians.
Scripture introduces Paul as a violent persecutor of the first Christians. In fact, he oversees the execution of the man
whom the Acts of the Apostles depicts as the first martyr, St. Stephen (Acts 7:58-8:1). He considers himself a late addition to
the Jesus movement, referring to himself as “one untimely born” (1 Cor 15:8). However, following his encounter with
Christ near Damascus, he became one of the greatest missionaries in the history of the Church. Like Peter, Paul has a
heart for the Lord, and when his spiritual energy is directed to the glory of Jesus Christ, he is a powerful witness to the
kingdom of God. His letters make up the bulk of the New Testament and continue to guide the Church today.
It is a beautiful testimony to the power of God that these two men, whose faults Scripture does not attempt to hide, are
key figures in the story of Jesus and foundational in the development of the Church. Sts. Peter and Paul show us the
work of the Holy Spirit, who renews hearts, builds the Church, and testifies to Christ. Peter died in Rome as martyr – on a
cross, according to some accounts. Paul suffered for the cause of the gospel throughout his ministry, writing several letters
from prison. He, like Peter, was martyred in Rome.
Imperfect men, seized by the Word of God and set on fire by the Holy Spirit. They are pillars of our Church and witnesses
to freedom in Christ.
Sts. Peter and Paul, pray for us!
