HIDDEN MEADOWS on the ridge 340 Farmers Lane • Sellersville, PA 18960 Hidden Meadows P: 215-257-6701 • The Laurels P: 267-429-3931 September 2015 Resident of the M nth Mary Gawlenski Mary was born on Sept. 9, 1915, in Quakertown, PA. Her father, Victor, came from Poland and bought a farm in Quakertown. She was the youngest of four children; she had three brothers, Lewis, Michael, and Stanley. Her mother died when she was three years old. Mary attended “The Little California One-Room School House” in Quakertown for eight years where she made hot lunches for the children. Mary met her husband, Leon, at the family’s farm which she and Leon later renovated and lived on for many years. They were married for 67 years and traveled the world together. They were excellent Polka dancers. She had one daughter, Victoria; two grandchildren, Mary Ann and David, and five great-grandchildren. Mary worked as a sewing machine operator setting collars on shirts at Tuttleman’s in Quakertown. Mary is a devout Catholic and was very active in St. Isidore’s Church. This included forming the Catholic Woman’s Club, starting the library at the school, being its librarian, organizing Christmas Bazaars, and publishing the church’s cookbook. The theme this year is “Nourishing Life: Mind, Body and Spirit.” On Sunday, Sept. 13, at Hidden Meadows we will celebrate Grandparents Day with Goodies at 10:30 am. For The Laurels, they will be having a Root Beer Float Social at 3:30 p.m. Families are invited to attend. Monday, Sept. 14 is Hat Day. Tuesday, Sept. 15 is a special lunch. The choices will be pizza or boneless wings and beer. Wear your favorite sports team attire. Wednesday, Sept. 16 is Spa Day, with special spa treatments for the residents. Wear pjs! Thursday, Sept. 17 is wear Green at Hidden Meadows and wear Blue at The Laurels. Both buildings’ residents will participate in an inter-building Olympics at 2:30 p.m., followed by an ice cream social. Friday, Sept. 18 is our Family Day with a “Tailgate” picnic at Hidden Meadows and The Laurels, 4-6:30 p.m. More details for this event on pages 2 and 3! Be sure to wear football attire. On Sept. 9, we will be celebrating Mary’s 100th birthday! We will have a lunch special, Danielle Tumminelli will be singing at 2 p.m., and at 3 p.m. we will have cupcakes. All are invited to join in the fun and honor Mary. Checkers the Rabbit Hidden Meadows has a new rabbit. His name is Checkers, and he is a Jersey Wooly. He has won 15 times in competitions. Family Tailgate Picnic Our Family Picnic will be on Sept. 18 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. We will be serving BBQ short ribs, cheeseburgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, mac & cheese, potato salad, and more. We will have a dessert bar including watermelon and funnel cake. At Hidden Meadows there will be a balloon artist and the S.O.S. Gang providing the music. RSVP before Sept. 11 and tickets are only $5 each; after that date, they are $10 each. Kids under 5 are free. Please RSVP in the office by Sept. 11 to get the special ticket price. New Resident Welcome Bill Parenti, our newest resident! Howard and Al at the Patriotic BBQ Resident of the Month (Continued) Mary volunteered for the Red Cross and Bloodmobile, receiving an award for 25 years of service. She also volunteered at the Senior Citizen Center and the local hospital in Quakertown. Mary loved to play bridge, crochet, and embroider, and made many ceramic pieces over the years. Mary also kept a daily journal and enjoyed looking back on it. Mary loved to garden at “the farm”. She grew all her own organic vegetables and froze them to enjoy over the winter. Mary was an excellent cook and baker. Everyone loved her meals. She was always having parties and picnics. Her guests still talk about the food and fun. She was an avid health and fitness enthusiast. Mary was a faithful walker and enjoyed walking miles each day with her dog, Sparky. She enjoys coming to exercise and still keeps up with her fitness. Mary loves to read and participate in all the activities at Hidden Meadows. Mary enjoys dominoes with Marilyn and Loretta. Mary is very proud of her Polish heritage. The residents on the campus love animals, they bring a smile to everyone’s face. He is our Assistant Director of Culinary Services and works in the kitchen of The Laurels. Previously he was the Executive Chef at Wesley Enhanced Living in Doylestown for 10 years. Corey currently lives in Doylestown with his wife of 8 years, Jessica, who is a teacher of children with special needs. They have two little girls, Sophia who is 8 and Olivia who is 5. Corey is 38 years old and the oldest of 3 boys. He has had his own catering company for the last 10 years called Primos Catering where he plans and executes functions for groups of 5 to 200 people! Corey likes to cook at home, too. He loves BBQ grilling and smoking the food for his family and friends. Welcome Corey to the Hidden Meadows team!
