During the two-day visit, the division command group met with commanders, command sergeants major and first sergeants to discuss the readiness of the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team as it makes final preparations for deploying in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. As Thurman met with the unit command teams, he discussed his “CG’s Priorities” with the group. He emphasized the importance of the role Soldier’s play in the Global War on Terrorism. “That’s why we’re all here — because of young Soldiers,” Thurman Maj. Gen. James D. Riling added his sentiments to Thurman’s. “Good discipline is enforcing the standards,” he said. “Good, solid leadership starts at the company level.” Riling also discussed the need to keep Soldiers — of all ranks — informed and ensure that every Soldier, regardless of rank, has a battle buddy and that they need to check on each other. Thurman and Riling also visited other members of the 3rd HBCT during the two-day visit. At each stop the two told Soldiers how proud they were of what they had accomplished and said there was “no doubt ... you can get the job done.” Have a safe Veterans Day. Mixon Jr., commanding general, 7th Infantry Division and Fort Carson “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victor …” — President Woodrow Wilson, Nov. 11, 1919 Nov. 11, 1919, “Armistice Day” as it was once called, was declared as a day for all Americans to remember the sacrifices that our Soldiers made during World War I, and to rejoice and celebrate the end of a bitter war. Armistice Day continued to be a tradition until 1954 when it was renamed “Veterans Day” to honor veterans of all wars. For 86 years since that first Armistice Day, Americans on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour, reflect on the great sacrifices our veterans have made worldwide in answering the call of freedom. Today, as our nation is at war, freedom is once again assaulted by terrorists who kill innocent men, women, and children as a means to promote their hateful ideology. Once again, our Soldiers are in harm’s way responding to a global campaign of fear with a global campaign of freedom. Once again, our Soldiers, like those who served in places such as the hedgerows of Normandy, the hilltops of the 38th Parallel and the jungles of Vietnam, are patrolling the streets of Baghdad, Tal Afar and Rhamadi. They, like the generations of Soldiers before them, believe that America’s mission is to defeat an enemy and give strength to a nation that represents a beacon of hope in the part of the world that is desperate for the freedoms that Americans What do you think are the best and worst aspects of the ACU? enjoy and hold so dear. Our Soldiers believe that women and children should be allowed to go to school. They believe people have the right to practice the religion of their choice, but most of all, they believe that freedom is worth fighting for. I am often asked, what does Veterans Day mean to me? And I am sure many of you have been asked the same question. My response is always the same. “Veterans Day is a day to thank and honor every American who has served, and who continues to serve, this great country of ours.” For 230 years, the American Soldier has answered the nation’s call. Those who volunteer and answer the call to duty are willing to give more than they take. They are driven, I believe, by love of country, a devotion to duty, and a willingness to sacrifice everything so others might live in peace and freedom. The Global War on Terror is a war unlike any other this country has fought. It is a war that has tested our resolve, but while the enemy may be different, the reasons to fight are the same: to protect the American people; to preserve our freedom; and to ensure a peaceful future for ourselves, our children and grandchildren. Words can barely begin to express the thanks to all those who have served, to those who are serving, and those who are joining the ranks of Mixon “They are lightweight and feel like you’re wearing pajamas. The workmanship is poor, and they rip very easily.” Spc. Trevor Diercks B Co, 3rd STB MOUNTAINEER Commanding General: Maj. Gen. Robert W. Mixon Jr. Public Affairs Officer: Lt. Col. I am deeply grateful for the men and women who wear the uniform, who have taken the oath to defend our constitution and our nation. I am also grateful for the military families, for they, too, have a burden to carry during this time of uncertainty. The torch from our aging veterans has been passed to today’s Soldiers who now courageously stand point and engage the enemy that threatens our freedom. Someday, these veterans, our Soldiers, will pass the torch to those who will fill future ranks, and that torch will proudly burn and continue to show the beacon of freedom and serve as a symbol of America’s commitment to oppressed people around the world. So, on this Veterans Day as we gather with friends and family, take a moment to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our county, remember the missing, celebrate the living, and recognize all who today fight to defend America’s freedom. God bless you and keep you safe this Veterans Day weekend, and may he continue to bless our great Army and forever bless the United States of America. MOUNTAINEER Nov. 10, 2005 3 News DoD health program to help redeploying troops by Jim Garamone American Forces Press Service WASHINGTON — Service members returning from deployments will now participate in a postdeployment health reassessment program that all the services are instituting, defense officials said at a Pentagon news conference Nov. 4. This new program will assess the health — both physical and mental — of service members some 90 to 120 days after they have redeployed. “We recognize that deployments may have an impact on the health and well-being of our service members, and we know from research that health concerns are identified even several months after returning from operational deployments,” said Dr. William Winkenwerder, assistant secretary of defense for health affairs. This new program is in addition to the routine post-deployment health screening that all service members go through upon return to the states from a deployment. More than 900,000 service members have already gone through that program. The reassessment program is designed to find service members whose symptoms don’t show up immediately. The program aims to get them the help they need, the doctor said. The program builds on test programs the services have conducted since June. The Army, Navy and Marine Corps tested the program on 3,000 service members. Medical officials said the pilot program was effective and now look to expand it to all returning service members. Those three services plus the Air Force — which started the test program in September — will institute the program in January 2006, officials said. Key elements of the program include outreach to service members, education and training for service members and their families, screening of service members, assessment by medical professionals, evaluation and treatment and follow-up. The Army, Navy and Marine Corps will do the assessments face to face with the service members. The Air Force plan calls for airmen to answer an online survey and incorporate the survey in with their members’ annual physicals. Winkenwerder said the results so far do not indicate that the Global War on Terror is affecting “service members or their families in ways different from past wars. What’s different is the way we’re responding.” The assistant secretary said that it is important that military leaders, service members and clinicians understand the process and buy into it. “Effective education to gain leadership support and service member participation and optimal clinical practice is critical to the success of this program,” he said. Health officials want to destigmatize the process of service members going to health professionals for mental or physical help. Returning combat veterans shouldn’t believe they must deal with the stresses they experienced by themselves, said Navy surgeon general Vice Adm. Donald Arthur. “Everyone who goes into combat is in some way psychologically affected,” he said. “I don't think you can get around that fact.” He said it’s significant that the military is addressing the issue upfront “with people who understand combat because they have also been there and can more readily talk with the Soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who are coming back. “We have learned that we shouldn’t let our combat veterans go out into society without any questions asked or without any contact, as we used to do,” Arthur noted. The admiral said early contact with service members reduces stress and takes care of family issues, noting that “combat is inherently stressful.” Winkenwerder said active-duty and reservecomponent personnel will be treated exactly the same. Unit commanders are charged with ensuring service members participate in this program. 4 MOUNTAINEER Nov. 10, 2005 News Army implementing DoD reimbursement policy by Army News Service New Department of Defense policy allows for reimbursement to eligible Soldiers who personally purchased certain equipment after Sept. 10, 2001, and before Aug. 1, 2004. Curt Cashour 14th Public Affairs Detachment Members of the 43rd Area Support Group’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company marked the unit’s official return to Fort Carson with an uncasing ceremony at Manhart Field Nov. 2. Before returning to the United States in early September, the unit spent a year in Kuwait, where 43rd Soldiers provided logistics support to U.S. and Coalition Forces in Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan. At the ceremony, nearly 150 troops stood in formation as 7th Infantry Division and Fort Carson Commanding General Maj. Gen. Robert W. Mixon Jr. and 43rd Commander Col. Scott Lang praised the unit’s performance during the deployment. Other distinguished guests included Colorado Springs’ Mayor Lionel Rivera. Calling 43rd one of Carson’s proudest units, Mixon said the unit’s Soldiers made vital contributions to the War on Terror. He then thanked the Soldiers and their families for continued service to the nation. “Every generation has its heroes. This generation and these Soldiers to my front are no different,” Mixon said. Lang used his time at the podium to tout the unit’s many accomplishments during the deployment, 43rd’s second in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Coalition Forces Land Component Command officials called on 43rd for some of the most complex logistical missions in theater and the unit didn’t disappoint, Lang said. After arriving in Kuwait, CFLCC officials assigned 43rd more than 2,000 active duty, Reserve and National Guard Soldiers. With the help of HHC troops, the Soldiers made a number of accomplishments, including helping more than 250,000 U.S. and coalition troops transition in and out of theater, receiving, storing and clearing more than $3 billion worth of ammunition and outfitting about 14,000 vehicles with level-3 armor, Lang said. Staff Sgt. Al Rood, platoon sergeant for HHC’s 2nd platoon, said that although it felt great to represent 43rd during the ceremony, his proudest moments came during the deployment. “We set a standard over there in Kuwait that I don’t think anyone else will be able to touch,” he said. Clint Stein Mountaineer staff On June 14, 2004, the 229th birthday of the U.S. Army, the new Army Combat Uniform was unveiled during a cake-cutting ceremony in the courtyard of the Pentagon. Now, more than a year later, many Soldiers at Fort Carson are wearing the new uniform, but many have mixed feelings on how it compares to the old uniform functionally and tactically. Soldiers who have already been issued the ACU may have noticed that taking care of their new duds is much different than the battle dress uniforms they once wore. One of the more obvious changes in caring for the ACU is that it is not to be starched, dry cleaned or hot pressed — which is the exact opposite of how most Soldiers care for the BDU. Having one’s uniform highly pressed and boots shined is the standard when Soldiers are wearing the BDU. With the ACU, if a Soldier starches his uniform it can affect the service life of the fabric, which is meant to be wrinkle-free. Each set of ACUs comes with a wash/handling manual to help ensure Soldiers care for their new uniform properly. According to the manual, the ACU is to be machine washed or hand washed in cold water using a mild detergent that does not contain optical brighteners. A list put out to various units on post by Command Sgt. Maj. Terrance McWilliams, 7th Infantry Division and Fort Carson command sergeant major, names several detergents that contain optical brighteners. For a copy of the list, Soldiers should ask their noncommissioned officer in charge or commander. After washing, the instructions state that the uniform can either be hung dry or machine dried at a low- to medium-setting, not to exceed 160 degrees. To help keep the Velcro on the uniform from sticking to other pieces of laundry during wash and dry cycles, the instruction manual calls for the removal of all patches. Spc. Mike Ivie, a tanker in the 1st Battalion, 68th Armor Regiment, who was issued the ACU this summer advises Soldiers to not only take the patches off, but to also take the ACU out of the dryer immediately after the cycle is finished. “If you take them (ACU) out right when they’re done drying and hang them up, they won’t get a single wrinkle in them and they’ll look good.” Ivie said not having to spend the time and money caring for the ACU is something he can get used to quickly, but when it comes to buying the new uniform, the expected cost has him concerned. At a predicted price of $34 more than the BDU or DCU, Soldiers may be reluctant to reach into their wallets when the ACU reaches Military Clothing and Sales Stores. But, Ivie thinks that not paying to have the ACU professionally cleaned and pressed might save him and other troopers money in the long run. On an average of $3 per uniform per week to have them cleaned, the laundering expense can be much more than the cost difference of the uniforms. Not having to pay for starch or dry cleaning services of the ACU is one of the benefits to the new and improved uniform, according to the Program Executive Office Soldier Web site. The PEO Soldier is the organization that helped design and develop the ACU. According to the Web site, although savings and versatility are benefits to the uniform, the change was made because of functionality. The BDU and DCU were not practical with modern war environments, said Sgt. 1st Class Jeff Myhre, the clothing and individual equipment PEO noncommissioned officer in charge. The ACU was designed for today’s Soldier by the Soldiers, he said. The PEO Soldier tested the uniform in the field by Soldiers who gave their input on what changes should be made, if any, and what they liked about the ACU. After many months of testing, the new ACU emerged as the new uniform of the Army. One of the functional changes that Sgt. Inez Martinez,1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, likes about the ACU is the inserts in the trousers for knee pads. Martinez said with the BDU and DCU the knee pads would slide down to his feet making it hard to move around. “When the knee pads fall down you can’t run, and every time you need to kneel down you have to pull the pads back up,” he said. “With the ACU, you don’t have to worry about that happening.” Aside from the inserts for knee pads in the uniform, there are also other changes that both Martinez and Ivie said they like about the ACU. Ivie said having pockets on the sleeves was a great idea for improving the uniform, especially when wearing the Interceptor Body Armor System. “The IBAS covered all the pockets on the DCU. It makes sense to have pockets where you can actually use them,” said Ivie. “I like where all the pockets are on the ACU.” Another improvement made to the uniform that Ivie likes is the draw string. He said the adjustable tabs on the waist of the trousers on the BDU and DCU would eventually wear out and not hold. The draw string around the waist of the ACU trousers and the ankle cuffs work much better than the waist tabs. The major complaint that both Ivie and Martinez have about the ACU is the use of Velcro patches. Martinez said it doesn’t make sense to have something that could make a lot of noise on a combat uniform, but Ivie said because the tabs and patches are attached with Velcro he will take them off during times when he has to be quiet. “It might be a pain to keep taking the patches off and putting them on all the time before missions, but if that’s what it takes to control noise discipline, than I’m going to do it,” he said. The biggest change to the new uniform that Ivie and Martinez like the most is the tan boots. “The desert boots (compared to the black boots) feel like sneakers,” said Martinez. “I’ll never wear a pair of black boots again.” According to recent updates to Army Regulation 670-1, Martinez may never have to wear black boots again. Soldiers are authorized during the phasing in of the ACU to mix certain apparel items of the ACU with BDU or DCU, like the tan boots. For Soldiers who joined the Army after Oct. 1, having the option to mix uniforms isn’t an option. According to PEO Soldier, the ACU is now the initial issue at basic combat training for Soldiers. McWilliams said these Soldiers may be arriving to Fort Carson by the first of the year and they will not have the BDU, nor are they required to purchase any. For Soldiers who have the BDU and wish to purchase the ACU, Myhre said they may want to wait until after the rapid fielding initiative takes place. The RFI is supplying deploying enlisted Soldiers with new combat equipment, to include two of the ACUs before they deploy. Units that have already received the ACU through RFI are the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team and the 10th Special Forces Group. A schedule of units that are to receive the ACU can be found through the PEO Soldier Web Site. For those Soldiers who don’t want to wait to get the ACU, the tentative schedule they will be in at the clothing and sales store at Fort Carson is January, said Mary Sandaball, assistant manager of clothing and sales. “But it can be as late as April until we get them,” she said. “The actual date still hasn’t been locked down.” Sandaball said that when the ACU does arrive that it doesn’t mean the store will be taking the BDU off the shelves. “We may not have as many, but will keep the BDU around until the phase-out date.” According to PEO Soldier the tentative phase out date for the BDU will be May 2007. For more information about the changes made to the ACU visit the PEO Soldier Web Site at www.peosoldier.army.mil. 12 MOUNTAINEER Nov. 10, 2005 Miscellaneous Military discount — The Home Depot observes Veterans Day by offering a 10 percent discount to military personnel. (Capt.) Mike Reeve, 1-68 Armor The Apostle Paul challenges us in 1 Timothy 6:12 to “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” Paul is quick to remind us, not only in this verse but in many others, of the need for heroism and dedication in the living out of our faith. Veterans Day brings to mind many heroes, living and dead, who have served heroically and with dedication. Near Kasan, Korea, on Sept. 10, 1950, Cpl. Gordon M. Craig, 16th Reconnaissance Company, distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. During the attack on a strategic enemy-held hill his company’s advance was subjected to intense hostile grenade mortar and small-arms fire. Craig and four comrades moved forward to eliminate an enemy machine gun nest that was hampering the company’s advance. At that instance an enemy machine gunner hurled a hand grenade at the advancing men. Without hesitating or attempting to seek cover for himself, Craig threw himself on the grenade and smothered its burst with his body. His intrepid and selfless act, in which he unhesitantly gave his life for his comrades, inspired them to attack with such ferocity that they annihilated the enemy machine gun crew, enabling the company to continue its attack. Craig’s noble self-sacrifice reflects the highest credit upon himself and upholds the esteemed traditions of the military service. When the Apostle Paul compares faith to a “good fight” he has the example of the dedicated Soldier in mind. In II Timothy, Paul challenges us to endure hardship “like a good soldier of Christ Jesus” (2:3-5). The warrior knows the mission and never accepts defeat. His goal is always to “please his commanding officer” (II Timothy 2:4). These thoughts beg the question, “What if we applied that same ‘warrior’ level of excellence, tenacity, dedication and heroism to our faith?” Too often we muddle around in puddles of uncertainty without a sense of spiritual direction or purpose. This world is full of things and events that will attempt to distract you from the battle. In the Bible, James tells us that “the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind” (James 1:6). You face a battle whether you realize or not. It is the battle of faith. The mission God has given us is clear (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14). The question then is simple. Will you take the mission to heart and will you see it to completion? Are you living heroically in this great battle or do you need to renew your dedication to the mission and the eternal life “to which you were called?” Thank you to all warriors who have sacrificed so much for the mission. Thank you for challenging us by your example to live and fight heroically even in “the good fight of the faith.” MOUNTAINEER Nov. 10, 2005 Community Chapel Protestant religious education — Registration is ongoing for Protestant religious education at Soldiers’ Memorial Chapel. MOUNTAINEER Nov. 10, 2005 Community 17 Renter’s insurance ... Why you can’t afford to live without it Story by Spc. Aimee Millham Mountaineer staff Service members renting or living on post often don’t get renter’s insurance because they either assume nothing bad will happen to their residence or because they think they can’t afford it. According to Army Community Service Financial Specialist Patricia Randle, “The question isn’t can you afford renter’s insurance, the question is can you afford to be without it?” Seventy percent of service members who request an Army Emergency Relief loan because of a house fire do not have renter’s insurance, Randle said. And, though she has no hard evidence on the matter, if GMH Leasing Manager Lynn Rivera were to guess, she’d say that only 50 percent of families on post have renter’s insurance. There are many reasons renter’s insurance is important, and there are several things service members should consider to ensure they ask the right questions of their insurers to get the right coverage, said Randle. The first step service members should take is to inventory all of their belongings, including how much they paid for each item and its current value, according to Mitch Swanda, a certified financial planner with USAA Financial Planning Services. Randle recommends service members take photos of or film their possessions. “Now, don’t go and store those records in your house,” Randle said. She suggests keeping those records in a safe. The records can help determine a service member’s coverage needs and can also serve as proof of ownership if a loss occurs, helping the insurance company to make a proper estimate of payment. Next, service members should determine if they want a “replacement-cost” policy, which covers the cost of replacing lost items at today’s prices, or a “cash value” policy, which covers what the item is worth after depreciation, said Randle. According to Swanda, although it typically costs about 15 percent more, many renters find replacement-cost coverage to be a better value. It is important that renters realize the value of their property and have enough coverage for it, said Rivera. Even if a natural disaster occurs, a family living on post is only covered by GMH for $20,000. Usually, the actual value of most service members’ property far surpasses that amount, Rivera said. For this reason, residents should be sure to properly estimate the value of their property. The best place to start for coverage is through a service members’ car insurance provider, said Rivera. Many car insurance companies will add renter’s insurance coverage to the service member’s premium for a relatively low cost. Service members should be mindful of the fact that companies place limits on property coverage, Randle said. For example, a typical policy might limit total payments to $200 for cash and coins; $1,000 for valuable papers; $1,000 for theft of jewelry and watches; and $2,000 for theft of guns. So, if service members have specific items they’d like fully insured such as weapons, jewelry or electronic equipment that are worth more than the policy limits, they need to get coverage specific to those items, said Randle. Renter’s insurance not only protects belongings but can provide liability coverage. If a visitor slips on a wet floor and is injured, a service member could be held responsible for thousands of dollars in medical bills. In this type of situation, a renter’s insurance policy could cover the costs up to a certain limit, according to Swanda. For military personnel who relocate frequently, another advantage of renter’s insurance is its portability. During a move, most renters’ policies cover personal possessions during shipment or while in storage. It is especially important for military personnel to look for a renter’s insurance policy that does not contain territorial limits. A policy without these restrictions will cover belongings nearly anywhere in the world, with few exceptions. Renter’s insurance could even cover the loss of a service member’s luggage. So, if a duffle disappears from the airport baggage claim or a service members’ camera is stolen, there’s a good chance their renter’s insurance could cover that loss. If for nothing else, service members should get the insurance for their own peace of mind, Randle said. Rocky Mountain Auto Brokers.com 719-477-9009 RMAB wants you! Story and photos by Spc. Aimee Millham Mountaineer staff Winds gusting to more than 60 miles per hour swept across Fort Carson Nov. 3 during a Colorado windstorm that caused winds of up to 84 miles per hour in other parts of El Paso County. Mountain Post Team members saw car windows blown in by flying debris, trees uprooted, including one that fell and took a street light down with it, and motorcycles knocked over, causing severe auto body damage. The siding and shingles of several buildings such as the outdoor swimming pool and several on-post houses were torn up by the wind, as were play sets in the backyards of some of those houses. One unit conducting an eight-mile road march that morning reported having to duck to avoid a trampoline that was flying at them. Several buildings on post also lost electricity, causing on-post schools to close down early. The storm also caused issues in traffic, twisting and shorting out traffic lights. A more amusing display was the portable toilet that made its way from behind Manhart Field to the front of post headquarters, landing right at the foot of Iron Mike, the statue located on the front lot of the headquarters building. Almost every other portable toilet on post was turned over as well. According to Kathy Torgerson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, the wind was not unusual considering the strong upper jet stream over the area at the time. During major cold outbreaks over the United States, the jet stream, a river of wind 25,000 feet in the atmosphere, often dives south, according to the American Meteorological Society. This lowering of the jet-stream can cause winds to speed up, said Air Force Staff Sgt. Bradley Cogdill, a weather forecaster with the 13th Air Support Operations Squadron at Butts Army Airfield. High-speed winds close to the surface cause what Fort Carson experienced Thursday, said Cogdill. He added that Thursday’s storm was very rare for this area. The 13th ASOS put out a severe storm warning Thursday, which cancelled any scheduled flights in the Fort Carson flight zone, said Cogdill. Above: A motorcycle in the parking lot of Provider Complex, a barracks building on post, was one of several knocked over throughout Carson during the windstorm. It’ll take more than just kicking the tires and listening to the engine rumble for buyers to decide whether their purchase is a savvy one. Experts estimate that as many as half a million cars submerged in the waters around the New Orleans area alone will be “totaled by insurance companies and then sold at auctions.” These auctions will then bring those cars into Colorado and around the nation. Some salvage operators and dealers will clean up the cars and resell them trying to hide the fact that the cars have been damaged. Many of these cars are shipped far from the flooded area, so don’t assume a car you’re looking at can’t be a flooded car just because Louisiana, Mississippi and other Gulf Coast states are far away. Be particularly cautious if the sales price seems too low. According to About Financial Planning Web site, potential problems with flooded cars include: • Electrical system failure • Transmission failure • Anti-lock brake system failure • Air bag failure • Mold and musty smell • Rust To avoid becoming a victim, follow this advice: — Have the car thoroughly inspected by a certified mechanic — Run a search on Carfax.com to obtain a history of the car you’re considering purchasing. Any time Fort Carson Soldiers and family members purchase a used vehicle; they can obtain a Carfax report free through Army Community Service’s Financial Readiness Program. This report provides information on the number of times a vehicle has been registered, where it’s been registered (by state) and the type of registration — personal, commercial or fleet. Call 526-4590 for more information on obtaining your free Carfax.com report. You need the vehicle’s 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number, which is located on the dashboard, to get the Carfax report. — Inspect the trunk, glove compartment, dashboard and below the seats for sand, mud, rust or other signs of water damage. Look for water marks around the engine, on the floor and behind the dash. — Check the upholstery and carpeting closely, looking for discoloration, fading or staining that could indicate water damage. Be suspicious of carpeting or upholstery that doesn’t match the interior or doesn’t fit properly, indicating it may have been replaced. — Thoroughly test all lights, gauges, #108906 #108853 Prices plus tax. MOUNTAINEER Nov. 10, 2005 21 22 MOUNTAINEER Nov. 10, 2005 Community Hand-to-hand combat for the whole family Story and photo by Spc. Brian Trapp 14th Public Affairs Detachment While everyone in the Army underwent some simple hand-to-hand combat training during initial entry training, a lot of troops haven’t practiced those skills since leaving basic. Now, Soldiers and families at the Mountain Post can learn or re-establish their grappling skills with classes offered by the Fort Carson Modern Army Combatives Program. The classes, open to Soldiers and family members — including children — teach the Army’s new standards for hand-to-hand combat, which the Army refers to as “combatives.” “If we had more kids come in that would be awesome,” said Capt. Felipe Moon, outgoing commander for 7th Infantry Division Individual Readiness Training. The classes go beyond regular battlefield combat training by implementing self-defense techniques. The classes are also a good way to get some exercise. Children who come in are exposed to selfdefense and a new culture, Moon said. It’s better to get a child into grappling early and get them excited about Brazilian Ju-jitsu instead of video games. For Soldiers, “The goal is to instill and build courage and confidence through training,” Moon said. “Our Army is taught to win by overwhelming power, but the Soldiers are going to be the ones putting their hands on the bad guy.” The classes are centered on a 10-hour course that teaches students how to encounter and control assailants by putting them into positions that restrict their movement and cause pain. “People can expect sore arms, chests and shoulders when they walk away from the first two classes,” Moon said. Course instructors are certified by the U.S Army Combatives School at Fort Benning, Ga., to teach both level I and level II of the Modern Army Combatives Program, and safety is stressed in the classes. That doesn’t mean there won’t occasionally be injuries, though. Accepting the risk of injury is a participant’s personal choice, said Spc. Brad Whittington, who is one of the instructors. There is a chance for injury, he said, especially if both opponents are giving their all in a match. “We don’t take unnecessary risks, and we’ve never had anyone injured in our classes,” Whittington said. Family members and Soldiers have taken advantage of the training by coming in during their off time to take on the challenges of grappling. Sgt. Damon Daniels, a paralegal with the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, started as a student in May. Daniels had a background in wrestling, but he was looking for something more. “I like combatives because it’s more realistic than other stuff I was doing,” Daniels said. “You can really use it. “When I first started coming here, I would just try to out-muscle people,” Daniels said. “Now I don’t do that, it’s more about technique; more of a Spc. Brad Whittington, (bottom), combatives instructor, and Sgt. Damon Daniels, Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, practice grappling during the Fort Carson Modern Army Combatives Program class Nov. 1. thinking-man’s game.” For Soldiers, the need for combatives training is more immediate. There is a post requirement for all units to conduct one hour of combatives training a week and to go through a 10-hour block of instruction before deploying to combat. Post policy on hand-to-hand training ties into an Armywide, twoyear plan to get all Soldiers certified with level I Modern Army Combatives Program training. Morning classes are currently offered from 6-8 a.m. at Waller Physical Fitness Center, and evening classes are offered from 6-8 p.m. (beginning Dec. 5) Monday through Friday. Inset: Three boys participated in the competition and actually beat out some of the adult participants. Feature vs. by Spc. Aimee Millham Mountaineer staff In a confident display of team spirit Friday, Fort Carson welcomed and rallied the U.S. Military Academy football team with cheers, beers and a bonfire. The confidence was fitting as the Army football team brought in a 27-24 victory Saturday against the Air Force football team. Friday’s welcoming of the Arny team began with an afternoon football team practice at Pershing Field and continued with a 6-8 p.m. pep rally that ended with the burning of a papier mache falcon, the Air Force team mascot, created by Capt. Angela Kreh. The pep rally, organized by Kreh, Fort Carson’s Directorate of Morale, Welfare and Recreation representative, was held at Xtremes’ parking lot and drew about 500 attendees. The goal of the evening, to stay pepped, was made clear by the master of ceremonies, a 2nd Infantry Division sergeant, who got loud cheers from the audience when he said his pitbull, that stood on stage with him, was hungry for some falcon meat. Service members and their families filled the parking lot, eating $1 burgers donated by a local McDonald’s, and tossing small foam footballs handed out at the event. The event began with a performance by rap group So Heated, an ensemble made up of Soldiers from the 2nd Infantry Division. The lyrics to their opening song spoke of relatable issues like Soldiers going to war, and the strife faced Air Force by the families left behind. So Heated continued performing between the evening’s competitions and drawing. There were pull-up, sand-bag and push-up competitions, an Army trivia competition and a loudest unit contest. Winners were rewarded a variety of donated gifts such as free Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club passes and passes to Mr. Biggs Family Fun Center — an indoor amusement park. Also, the loudest unit, which ended up being 43rd Area Support Group, won a grill donated by the Army/Air Force Mutual Aid Fund. And, there was a drawing for a $500 gift certificate to Best Buy donated by Pulte Homes. After the competitions and about an hour into the rally, the West Point cheerleaders, mascot and band arrived to perform and continue cheering the crowd on. Soon after, 1976 West Point graduate Maj. Gen. Robert Mixon Jr., the 7th Infantry Division and Fort Carson commanding general, and 2nd BCT Commander Col. Gary Patton, stepped on stage to perform a cheer they used to chant in their West Point days called “the rocket.” This was a performance the audience got a huge kick out of. Finally, when all but one of the evening’s events was finished, the bonfire that would burn a papier mache falcon wearing an Air Force football jersey. Supervised and started by the Fort Carson Fire Department, the audience watched and cheered as the flames reached and engulfed the falcon to the tune of the vitalizing music of the West Point band. The No. 1 rider request for many years has been adding Sunday service. Beginning Nov. 6, Sunday service became available on select routes. Nine transfer stations will be located throughout the region, eliminating the need for many riders to go downtown. Additions to the bus fleet are also part of the plan along with expanded weekday and Saturday service hours; a refurbished downtown terminal, Fort Carson’s route 30 now includes service on Saturday, and three new commuter express routes round out the first in a series of transit improvements. Details about the new transit features and services: • Sunday service: Sunday service hours will be from 7:30 a.m.-5:35 p.m. on select routes • Extended Saturday service: Saturday service hours will be from 5:30 a.m.-10:45 p.m. • New buses: Seven new state-of-the-art buses will be added to the bus fleet. • Transfer stations: Nine transfer stations will be located throughout the region: — Astrozon (Astrozon and Academy) — Austin Bluffs/Academy (Morning Sun and Academy) — Chapel Hills Mall (near Sears) — Citadel Mall (Santa Rosa and Citadel Dr. W.) — Downtown (Kiowa and Nevada) — First and Main Town Center (Tutt Boulevard) — Fountain (Wal-Mart) — Pikes Peak Community College (S. Academy Boulevard.) — University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (Austin Bluffs and Meadow Lane) • Express routes: Three express routes will reduce travel times to and from key destination points, including Falcon to downtown, Falcon to Garden of the Gods and Union Town Center to downtown. Express routes have fewer stops, which allow them to arrive at their final destination faster than traditional transit routes. • Refurbished downtown terminal: The downtown terminal is currently undergoing renovations including new carpet and paint, improved lighting, a new information booth and restrooms. • Printed schedules are available at the downtown terminal. Service improvements have been made possible through the City of Colorado Springs, the Federal Transit Administration and the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority, which was formed when voters in Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, Green Mountain Falls and El Paso County approved a 1 percent sales tax in November 2004 to address infrastructure and transportation needs in the region; 10 percent of these funds goes to transit. For more information about the improved transit services call 385-5902. See page 28 of today’s Mountaineer for a detailed map of Fort Carson’s route 30. by Robin Warren Evans Army Community Hospital Join the challenge of the Great American Smokeout. Every year, tobacco users across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout by using less tobacco products or quitting for the day of Nov. 17. We challenge you to stop using tobacco for 24 hours. Not a tobacco user? Give up something else, like chocolate or soda, in support of those trying to quit. According to the National Center for TobaccoFree Kids, per-pack prices vary from about $3.20 in Colorado to around $6 in New York. The national average is about $4 per pack. So, a pack-a-day or a can-a-day tobacco user burns through about $30 per week, or $1,600 per year. That’s a sizable house payment or a nice vacation with the family. A 40-year-old who stops using and puts the savings into a 401(k) earning 9 percent a year would have an extra $250,000 by age 70. Make plans now to quit for just 24 hours. You won’t be alone. Even if you don’t go on to quit permanently, you can be proud that you quit for a day. Research shows that tobacco users are most successful in kicking the habit when they have some means of support, such as nicotine replacement products; counseling; prescription medicine to lessen cravings; guide books; and the encouragement of friends and family members. Traces Brave Rifles’ history Visitors to the museum are greeted by “Timothy Cummings” a “member” of the regiment at Jefferson Barracks, Mo. Story and photos by Nel Lampe Mountaineer staff T he 3rd Cavalry Regiment has a proud history portrayed in the 3rd Cavalry Museum at Fort Carson. The museum is in the “Banana Belt” area — the yellow brick buildings on the way to Gate 20. The unit’s history is traced to a regiment of mounted riflemen authorized by Congress in 1846, a new and different unit for the U.S. Army — a regiment of riflemen on horseback. The mounted Soldiers would have longer range, using rifles, than did infantry Soldiers using muskets. About a year after its beginning, the mounted riflemen proved their worth while participating in the Artifacts in the museum include this sketchbook made of brown paper shopping bags. An exhibit portrays the early days of the 3rd Cavalry riflemen. 1847 Mexican War. The mounted riflemen participated in six campaigns, serving with distinction. In fact, the unit’s commanding general, Gen. Winfield Scott paid high tribute to the mounted riflemen, calling them “Brave Rifles.” Scott said, “Veterans, you have been bathed in fire and blood and come out steel — you are ‘Brave Rifles,’” At the time Scott commanded the U.S. forces in southern Mexico. The 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, now serving its second tour of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom, is evolved from the original mounted riflemen regiment. The regiment is still known as the Brave Rifles. The history of the Brave Rifles is shown in the museum. The regiment has had 71 colonels leading the group since its inception. The historic timeline of the unit is shown in the main exhibit in the museum. Visitors are greeted by a “member of the regiment, Timothy Cummings,” portrayed at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., the regiment’s first station. The regiment’s history is tracked through the exhibit with photos of the regiment’s colonels and a timeline of real-world events, allowing visitors to relate regiment events to historic events. Visitors may recognize several names of well-known warriors in the exhibits. Paul Martin, left, and Scott Hamrick adjust a saddle in the museum. Cody, also known as “Buffalo Bill,” was a civilian scout with the 3rd Cavalry. Cody was awarded the nation’s top honor — the Medal of Honor — for his gallantry in action at Platte River, Neb., in 1872. The medal was rescinded in 1916, but the medal was reinstated in 1989. Cody is one of 23 names on the Medal of Honor Board in the museum which lists members of the 3rd Cavalry who were awarded the nation’s highest award. Gen. George S. Patton was the regiment’s colonel from 1938 to 1940. Patton was an excellent horseman and his name is engraved on the Goodrich horsemanship trophy displayed in the museum. The museum had its beginnings as a regimental trophy room at Fort Meade, Md. The trophy room later became a museum. The museum has been relocated with the regiment each time it has been moved: to Baumholder, West Germany, Fort Lewis, Wash., and Fort Bliss, Texas. In 1996 the regiment was relocated to Fort Carson, and the museum is now on this post. Eventually, the museum will be relocated to Fort Hood, Texas, when the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment is moved there. The 3rd Cavalry Museum is one of only a few museums that traces Army history back further than the 20th century. The museum displays historic uniforms, firearms and reproduction saddles and other artifacts. Special displays depict the regiment’s participation in the Civil War, the Spanish American War, the Civil War, early Indian wars and the War with Mexico. Newer exhibits depict the regiment’s sixmonth tour in Bosnia and Iraqi Freedom. A large map of Iraq is in the museum and shows the area of operations of the 3rd ACR. Groups can arrange a guided tour of the museum. Self-guided tours are also welcomed. A display of military vehicles associated with the regiment is behind the museum. An H-34 Choctaw Helicopter, used by the 3rd ACR from 1955 to 1968 is there, as well as a rare 1942 Willys MB Jeep. There are light and medium An H-34 Choctaw Helicopter is one of the 3rd Cavalry’s displays. It was later used to haul mules. The outdoor display can be reached by going through the museum. Although the museum is devoted to the 3rd ACR’s unit’s history, a map of Fort Carson in the 1940s is popular with visitors who were assigned to the post during World War II and want to locate their barracks, unit and other familiar places. But more of Fort Carson’s 64-year history will be depicted in a future facility. The Mountain Post Historical Center is planned to be located near the Kit Carson statue and the Global War on Terrorism Memorial near the post’s main gate. The 30,000-square-foot facility will provide housing for post artifacts, several galleries, a visitors’ orientation center and office space, collection storage and preservation facilities, according to an editorial by Publisher Lon Matejczyk printed in the Sept. 16 issue of the Colorado Springs Business Journal. The historic center will be funded by the Colorado Springs community, Matejczyk said. A sign near Gate 1 identifies the historic center’s site. Groundbreaking is expected to occur in 2006, with construction expected to last two years. The 3rd Cavalry Museum is open Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. There is no admission charge for the museum, Museum Director Paul Martin prepares an item for display in the 3rd Cavalry Museum. Finally Army wins at Air Force for first time in 28 years Photo by Walt Johnson An Army receiver just misses a pass that would have been a touchdown during first half action Saturday. by Walt Johnson Mountaineer staff The last time the Army football team won in Colorado Springs, which it did 27-24 Saturday, Jimmy Carter was President of the United States, The Toronto Blue Jays played its first-ever baseball game against the Chicago White Sox, Elvis Presley died in Tennessee and not a single player on this year’s football team was alive. To say it has been a while and an obsession for Army’s football team to win at the Air Force Academy would be putting it mildly. Year after year teams come to the Academy and the players say they just want to be on the team that beat Air Force here. After a thrilling contest Saturday, members of the 2005 Army football team will never have to carry that burden around again. They will be forever in the gratitude of Army supporters the world over. Army came into the game with a solid game plan and the belief they could win the game, according to head coach Bobby Ross, who was basking in the delight of the victory at a post- game news conference. “I believe they believed coming into the game that they could win. We had to have believed that or we wouldn’t have won. Before the game I didn’t know (how it would turn out) because I think Air Force is still a very good football team that has gone through some tough times this year for whatever reason. They are a very solid football team and they have some good football players. We were able to hang in there and make it work at the end,” Ross said. Senior running back Carlton Jones echoed his coach’s feelings at a separate press conference when he said the Army team was ready for what the Air Force threw at them. “Walking off the bus we knew that we could win if we went out and executed on offense, defense and special teams. We knew if we went out and played like we practiced all week that we could win this game. Basically, it was preparation for what Air Force would do on defense. We weren’t surprised by what they did, we knew what was coming and we knew that we just had to execute,” Jones said. After the first half, it looked like Air Force was going to keep the Black Knights’ losing streak in Colorado Springs intact as the Falcons took a 14-13 lead into halftime. Army wasted many opportunities to score touchdowns with ill-timed mistakes or penalties and found itself down by a point at See Football, Page 36 36 MOUNTAINEER Nov. 10, 2005 Sports & Leisure Football From Page 35 halftime, something that was addressed by the coaching staff, according to Jones. “At halftime we talked about the chances we had in their territory and had to settle for field goals. We knew in the second half that we had to punch those chances in for touchdowns because seven points is a lot better than three,” Jones said. In the second half, the Black Knights took the words of the coaching staff to heart and took advantage of its trips to the Falcons’ red zone (inside the 20 yard line) to score two touchdowns. More importantly, the Black Knights controlled the ball with a patient, effective running game and short passing game that ate up valuable clock time, something the team wanted to do coming into the game, according to Ross. “We were striving for it (long sustained drives during the game) because I don’t think you beat them unless you do. In six of our seven games coming into today we had the advantage in ball possession, so it’s not something new to us. It (ball possession) was something we thought about, talked about and worked on,” Ross said. Air Force had the ball in Army territory at the 44-yard line with just under a minute to go when the play that Army players may label “the fumble” for years to come occurred. An Air Force runner was fighting for a first down when the ball was stripped out near the Army bench. After the game Ross described what he saw. “I saw the ball pop out and I thought the player that fumbled the ball got back on it. Then I saw us fall in a different spot and I knew we had it. The turnovers were the key thing in the game. It was a huge play, it was a big play,” Ross said. After the game, senior running back Scott Wesley could barely contain his jubilation. He said it will probably be a long time before he cares about the statistics of the game because there was a bigger meaning to the victory. “I probably won’t remember any of the statistics of the game but it’s the fact that we beat a team that has been beating us for such a long time. “We have a lot of old grads and old teammates that have been calling us (urging the team to win) and we will vicariously celebrate through all of them,” Wesley said. See what had happened ... oh there is no sense trying to dance around it, the annual tail kicking Air Force usually gives to Army was turned around Saturday and Army won for the first time here in 28 years. I, like many in the Air Force community, am in mourning. So, to all the people who took offense to my blatant rooting for the blue, I have held up my end of the deal by publicly proclaiming that Army is No. 1 this year as the picture on this page proves. In what can only be considered a rare event with this much significance, the World Class Athlete Program boxing team will hold an event today at 3 p.m. at Garcia Physical Fitness Center. The program will host a boxing smoker featuring members of its program and members of the U.S. Olympic Education Center boxing program. Many members of both the WCAP and U.S. Olympic team will be favored to earn spots on the 2008 U.S. Olympic boxing team. The WCAP team will be coached by the last head boxing coach for the U.S. Olympic boxing team, Basheer Abdullah, and the U.S. team will be coached by a former U.S. Olympic boxing coach and Al Mitchell. There are 11 bouts planned for the event that are sure to thrill boxing fans, according Charles Leverette, WCAP assistant boxing coach. One member of the WCAP program that will not take part in the event on post today is welterweight Boyd Melson. The 2004 World Military Welterweight Champion has a good reason for missing this prestigious event. He is part of an 11 boxer U.S. World Championship team is in Mianyang City, China, for the 2005 World Amateur Boxing Championships. The program was in conjunction with the Midnight Basketball Program and is designed to give post youth a variety of activities they can partake in outside of basketball.
