Special Collection for St. James Social Concerns
Dear Friends:
I just want to highlight some new “teaching” programs which
have kicked off the Fall Semester. Family Catechesis,
coordinated by Mary Duhaime and Cecille Zalamea, under the
auspices with the Evangelization Council, have over fifty
families enrolled in this alternative program to CCD which
meets monthly, on Sunday mornings in the school where both
children and parents undergo catechesis (in separate rooms, of
course), and complete their three hour class by attending the
Noon Mass together as a family. What I love about this
program is the fact that it emphasizes how faith is more than
knowledge. It is a relationship with our God and each other
who are the Church. Furthermore, it requires commitment by
the entire family, not just the children who are fulfilling
requirements as they climb the sacramental ladder from First
Communion to Confirmation. Special thanks to Mary and
Cecille as well as all those who are involved in this program
as catechists, aides and hospitality volunteers.
Another program which is new is a study of the Psalms, which
is the subject at hand in our adult Bible studies on Tuesday
evenings and Thursday mornings. Our exposure to the Psalms
at Mass must peak our interest in understanding their
aetiology and place in the liturgy.
Finally, on Saturday mornings, I am offering a course on the
study of Trinity which will meet for six weeks this Fall and
then six weeks in the Winter. While, ideally, those who are
enrolled in the first semester will continue their historical
study of the development of dogma concerning this central
mystery of our faith—those who cannot take the first course
but wish to take the second can, without feeling lost. The more
the merrier!
Sincerely,
Fr. Glenn

As September approaches, it is a month that always
turns our attention to the beginning of school starting for our
kids. It is also a reminder that learning about life and our
Faith is not just for “the kids,” but for all of us. There really
isn’t any specific level of learning that one graduates from
when talking about matters of Faith and learning the
stewardship way of life. We constantly need to grow and
become informed about our Faith. At my parish, Saint John
the Apostle in Minot, ND, we have a “Stewardship Day” each
year in September, during which we invite parishioners to
come and listen to presentations on how to more effectively
live the stewardship way of life. And so, whether it is
completely new to you, or just a refresher course, learning
about stewardship is a life-long process.
One expression we have used at my parish, “All that
we have, all that we offer,” gives the basics in understanding
the essentials for stewardship. It is “stewardship 101,” so to
speak. Thanking God for “all that we have” is primary. As
little kids, when we are given something, we are often told by
parents, “What do you say?” And the response is “thank
you.” Soon, that becomes a reflex response. We don’t need
someone to get us to respond. As good stewards, it is our
constant response to say thanks for “all that we have.” This is
an important first step and lesson of stewardship.
The second step follows in much the same way with
the same foundation: that is, gratitude. Out of the gratitude we
have for “all that we have,” it should become a natural
response to “offer” back to God something of ourselves. This
is also a learned but natural response to the desire to be good
stewards. This is the second lesson of stewardship we learn
when we follow our call to be disciples of Christian Learning
about discipleship is a life-long process. Practicing
stewardship allows us to learn how to be the best disciples we
can be, given our circumstances and our use of time, talent,
and treasure.
So, as September ushers in a new school year, this
month also ushers in our ongoing need to learn more about
being a good steward. No matter how many “Septembers”
you and I have had in our lives, a new one gives us another
chance to think of it as the beginning of our own personal
school year in Stewardship 101. It allows us to learn about
how to live our lives as productive, faithful, and authentic
stewards of God’s gifts. And that class is always in session,
for each and every one of us. Copyright © 2011

A LETTER FROM THE BISHOP
Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
Anniversaries offer an opportunity for reflection from a
unique vantage point – a place from which we can look back
on how far we’ve come and, at the same time, get a glimpse of
the road ahead.
On November 19th of this year, the Diocese of Metuchen will
celebrate the 30th anniversary of its establishment by His
Holiness John Paul II in 1981. Compared to most dioceses
around the country, we are relatively young. Yet, with 30
years behind us, we can boast numerous milestones and
accomplishments.
However, with so much work to do, we do not have the luxury
of being indifferent; rather, we must continue on our journey
as disciples of Jesus Christ with renewed passion and vigor.
Together we are called to assist the poor with food, shelter,
and clothing; provide for the future of the Church with
seminarian education; offer guidance to our youth; and bring
Christ’s saving message to all people. By supporting the
Bishop’s Annual Appeal, you help to accomplish all of this,
and more, through the many and varied diocesan ministries
that are sustained by your generosity.
I thank you for your faithful response to the Bishop’s Annual
Appeal in the past and invite you to prayerfully consider
joining me in making a sacrificial gift again this year. By
combining our financial resources, and with the guidance of
the Holy Spirit, our diocesan Church will flourish for
generations to come.
With heartfelt gratitude, I remain
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Rev. Paul G. Bootkoski, D.D.
Bishop of Metuchen

Preparing for the
New Translation of the Mass
What is a Roman Missal?
On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27,
2011, Catholic parishes in the United States will
begin praying the texts of the Mass using a new
English translation of the Roman Missal. The
Roman Missal contains what the Church refers to as the
“proper” antiphons for entrance and Communion time (in the
United States, with the approval of our bishops, we commonly
substitute hymns and songs for these “proper” antiphons). The
Missal also contains prayers such as the Sign of the Cross and
the greetings used at Mass. The opening prayer, the prayer
over the bread and wine at the preparation of the gifts, and the
prayer after Communion are all found in the Missal, as are the
different Eucharistic prayers that are used at Mass and the
blessings at the end of the liturgy. The Missal also contains all
of the parts of the Mass that the people say or sing, such as the
“I confess,” the Gloria, the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the Lamb
of God, and our other responses. Some of these prayers are
changed with the new translation; others remain the same.
