Page Three October 23, 2011 Sunday, October 23 Children’s Mass at the 9:00 a.m. Mass in the Church for children in Kindergarten through 5th grades. Dear Friends: I will be on retreat this week from Sunday to Thursday. Please pray for me as I take time out of my work-a-day schedule to renew my commitment to the priesthood, to parish ministry and to pasturing the flock entrusted to my care. Know that I will be praying for all of you, as well. As most of you know, the New Roman Missal goes into effect on November 27, the first Sunday of Advent. Music changes will be explained by our Director of Music before the Masses leading up to this Sunday and a pamphlet with the sung Mass parts will be found in each of the missals inside jackets. In addition, I will also have laminated cards in the pews having the responses to the priest’s prayers so as to facilitate the transition to this new translation. It may be a little bumpy at first, but I know that the people of this parish will adapt quickly to this Third Missal. For our children, new children’s missals have been ordered containing all the new prayers. Our teachers at the Children’s Liturgy, CCD, Family Catechesis and the parochial school will instruct our young ones how to use these. Prayerfully, Fr. Saturday, November 5, 2011 7:00pm - 10:00pm St. James School Gym Name: ____________________________________________ Telephone Number: _________________________________ Ministry: _________________________________________ No. Of Adults Attending: ____________ On the Road to Emmaus …where the people of Saint James Church meet Christ through each other. Greetings from the Saint James Stewardship Committee! The theme of today’s readings is love, and Jesus reminds us that the most important duty of a Christian disciple is to love the Lord with his whole self, and to also love his neighbor as himself. But love of neighbor is not always an easy task, especially when we recognize that others don’t always treat us with that sense of selfless love and, in fact, can be downright cruel to us at times. Nonetheless, Christ’s law of love stands firm. We are to love. Always. Jesus offers us the perfect example of selfless love on the cross. He died out of love for us. In order to make reparation for our sins so that we could enjoy life everlasting, the Lord experienced the most excruciating suffering, simply because He wanted us to reap the reward. The stewardship way of life calls us to follow Jesus’ example and act on this selfless love. By doing so, we set an example and call others to follow Christ, just as Saint Paul praised the Thessalonians for doing in the second reading. The Lord has given us the gift of love and, through His own suffering and death, He has shown us how to selflessly share that love by laying down our lives for others. What’s more, He has given us our time, our talent, and our treasure, and it is our duty as Christian stewards to use them in love of God and in love of neighbor. Page Five October 23, 2011 Mystery of God ONLINE If you could not attend Father Glenn’s first six-week installment of The Mystery of God course, if you missed a session, or if you simply wish to review the lecture material, please visit the Parish Web site at www.saintjamesbr.org. Click on Education and then choose “The Mystery of God” to access the course outline and audio recordings of the first three lectures in the series. Additional lectures will be added as they become available. Note that while the sound quality is not ideal (we’re working on that!), the content is accurate St. James Annual Women’s Retreat THE ST. JAMES WOMEN'S MINISTRY invites all women of the parish to a Fall Retreat taking place on November 1820 at the Sisters of Christian Charity in Mendham. The theme, "Transfiguration" (a time to be in the stillness of God's presence), will be presented by Friar Noel Danielewicz, O.F.M. Conv. More information can be found in the retreat/ registration brochure in the narthex of the church. Space is limited. Accommodations are on a first-come, first-served basis. Cost is $150; some scholarships available. For further information, please call Maureen Zellweger 908-221-1920 or Fran O'Brien 908-696-0168. Preparing for the New Translation of the Mass The Liturgy of the Eucharist On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, Catholic parishes in the United States will begin praying the texts of the Mass using a new English translation of the Roman Missal. This week, we explore what the Liturgy of the Eucharist is about. We begin by preparing the altar for the holy sacrifice to come. In the Prayer Over the Gifts we get ready to offer ourselves and our lives together with the bread and wine that we, too, might be transformed by God. In the Preface Dialog we declare that it is right and just to give thanks to the Lord our God, and in the Preface we proclaim the reasons that we have to give our thanks and praise. Then comes the great Eucharistic Prayer by which we render our thanks and praise to God the Father. As we recall what Jesus said and we do what he did at the Last Supper, God transforms the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, and we pray that we will also be transformed by the Eucharist we celebrate and receive. We ratify this wonderful action with the Great Amen, and prepare for the culmination of the Liturgy of the Eucharist in Holy Communion. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Thanksgiving Food Drive There will be donation sign-ups following all masses the weekend of November 12/13 for our annual Thanksgiving Sharing Project with our sister parish, Sacred Heart. Turkeys need to be dropped off frozen to the Church on Saturday, November 19th from 1011 a.m. The St. James CCD classes are collecting a $5.00 donation per family to be used in purchasing the non-perishable items to complete the meals. Your past generosity has been greatly appreciated by the parishioners of Sacred Heart. Parish Goal: $254,300.00 Pledged to date: $66,599.10 Annual Sacred Heart Adopt-a-Family Christmas Drive November 5th and 6th after all masses! For many years St. James parishioners have adopted families at Christmas time from a list provided by Sacred Heart Church, our sister parish in New Brunswick. The list includes the family name, name of each parent and ages and sizes of children. Our parishioners sign up to be responsible for one family each and to purchase Christmas gifts (clothes are encouraged) for each family member. More detailed information is provided at sign up which will take place after Masses November 5th and 6th. This effort has been greatly appreciated by recipients and often represents the only Christmas gifts these families receive. Bags of gifts are to be delivered to the area across from the parish offices no later than Wednesday December 7th. Many volunteer drivers are needed to take the gift bags to Sacred Heart during the preceding weeks. Sign-up forms for drivers will also be available.
