November 11th, at 11:00 AM on the 11th month in 1918 is
the date marked as Remembrance Day. On Remembrance Day each year we honor the men and women who
fought for our freedom. At our Remembrance Day Assembly, we sang songs, recited poems, and took a two minute
moment of silence to remember the soldiers who passed
away to serve our country. They all will be forever missed.

Rarely are Vancouver schools closed due to heavy snowfall. However, in the event of heavy snowfall,
information regarding school closures will be provided to the following radio and television stations by
6:00 a.m. on the morning of the closure: CKNW(980AM), CBC(690AM, 105.7 FM), CKWX(NEWS
1130AM), FAIRCHILD Radio (CJVB AM 1470/CHKG FM 96.1); BCTV/Global–( cable channel 11) or CITY
TV – (cable channel 13). Please do not call media outlets to find out if schools are closed. A clear announcement will be given to these radio and TV stations by 6:00 am on the morning of any school
closures.
In addition, information on snow closures will be available on line at http://www.vsb.bc.ca.
In the event of a significant snowfall, please check about school closure (radio announcement, telephone the school and listen for message on voice mail), before bringing your child to school.
Also, as a matter of safety, please remind your children that we do not allow throwing
“snowballs” of any sort on our school grounds.
The Roots of Empathy program is happening at John Henderson!
Ms. Candido's Kindergarten class will be visited once every
three weeks by baby Zariyah and her mother, Ms. Hundal to
teach us about Empathy. We will see the nurturing relationship between a mother and her baby unfold. We will learn
about how feelings and emotions for a baby and school aged
children are a very important part of growing up.
Mr. Baker, our Youth and Family worker, is instructing the
program, but the real teacher is baby Zariyah!
You can see how things are going as
the year goes on by looking at the
Roots of Empathy board in the main
hallway.
Henderson Elementary School is collecting canned and dry food
items for the Vancouver Food Bank’s 2015 Christmas Food Drive
Campaign. This year, food will be collected in the boxes located
under the Christmas tree by the office. All donations received by
December 16th will be picked up by the Food Bank. Any donations
received after this date will be held for January collection.
Thanks in advance for your kindness
at this time of year!

CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION DAYS
As you may know, a new comprehensive curriculum
for the K-12 system is being developed in BC. This
work has been years in the making with teachers,
administrators and the Ministry of Education involved
in its development. At the present time, the curriculum
for students in Grades K-9 is being piloted throughout
the province. New curriculum for students in Grades
10-12 will be available for piloting in September 2016.
Earlier this fall the Ministry of Education and the British Columbia Teachers’
Federation (BCTF) announced a plan to support the ongoing implementation of
the new curriculum. As part of this plan, districts have been asked to add two
days of curriculum implementation time during the 2015-2016 school year. This
time will be provided for teachers to continue to familiarize themselves with the
new curriculum and to plan for its full implementation in the coming years.
Once again, this year, we
have a great deal of lost
and very little found! There are many
items on the lost and found bench
located across from the main office.
Please have your child(ren) check for
coats, hats, sweaters, runners, etc.
Any items not claimed by December
20th will be given to charity.
In Vancouver, the following two days have been selected as our local noninstructional days for curriculum implementation:
Schools will not be in session for students on these two days.
A reminder to all parents that
the next PAC meeting will be
held on Tuesday, December 15th
at 7:00pm in the school library.
We are pleased that teachers have been given this additional time to spend on
this important work to serve your children better as we transition to the new curriculum. Please feel free to contact the school if you have any questions.
All parents are welcome to either join this
meeting or send your fundraising ideas in
writing to the office for our PAC team. Community parent suggestions are always appreciated!
Friday, March 4 and Friday April 15

2011?
Kindergarten Registration
starts on November 2nd
All Kindergarten applicants are required to submit an application to their English
catchment elementary school. This includes families who wish to apply for choice
programs and/or a cross boundary placement.
The priority registration period for Kindergarten opened on Monday November 2nd
and closes at 4 pm on Monday February 1st. Students who submit an application
within this priority period will be accommodated prior to late applicants.
In a few Vancouver schools there may be more in-catchment applicants than the
school can accommodate. In this event, applicants who applied within the priority
registration period (Nov 2 to Feb 1) will be included in a draw for available spaces.
Students with siblings already in attendance at the school (and who will be attending
next year) will be placed prior to the draw.
WHEN REGISTERING YOUR CHILD PLEASE BRING:
Proof of residence in Vancouver
Child’s birth certificate
Immigration documentation (if applicable)
Immunization records

Diwali is one of the largest and brightest festivals in India. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness,
knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair.
This year Henderson Elementary once again did an amazing celebration of this special event on November 12th.
Thanks to the several community volunteers
this event was a hit! We enjoyed activities
throughout the day such as Bhangra dance
lessons (traditional Indian dance), Mehndi
(henna paint) hand
painting, Diyas (Indian
candles) decorating…….as well as gift
bags given to all. And of
course we all received delicious samosas and Indian sweets.
Reminder the library is open before
and after school every day… See you
soon!
This wonderful day was all thanks to
our volunteers and a special thanks
to Himani Joshi, Parminder Jaswal
and Ms. Leahy who worked very hard
decorating and coordinating this
event.
