Here are some of our most frequently asked questions: SOUTH WHIDBEY HOME BUILDERS 2014 OFFICERS President - Jim Thelen Vice President - Trevor Jones Secretary - Tim Lewis 2013 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Builder Member - Dave Johnson Builder Member - Charles Locke (CGP, CAPS) Associate Member - Tiane White SWHB has been Busy! Hello All, It has been a while! Quite a bit has gone on since I last wrote. First of all we successfully completed another playhouse for Island County 4-H and they did wonderful in their ticket sales. We would like to thank everyone who helped on this and donated materials and time. We could not do this without the support of our community. Next, we held our 3rd annual chili feed and auction and it was a huge success! We raised enough money to award 6 scholarships this year. If you have not made it to one of these yet you should put it on your calendar for next year. Lots of great homemade chili, baked potatoes and great desserts and to top it off entertainment from Jim Freeman. Now for our fond farewells...........most of you probably know that Dion is leaving Frontier and setting out on a new adventure with his wife in Italy! We would like to thank him for his support over the years and wish them all the luck. Also we would like to express our appreciation to Tim Lewis and all of the employees at ProBuild for their help and support over the years. Tim has been a huge part of the SWHB board and the success of our playhouse's and chili feed. We wish all of you the best of luck in whatever your future holds, we will miss you all. Jim BIAW’s Insurance Program! The Building Industry Association of Washington (BIAW) and SICBA are proud to introduce the Building Industry Insurance Program (BiiP). The BiiP is an exclusive BIAW member benefit that allows members the opportunity to purchase competitive insurance products through member insurance What does this mean to me? BiiP products have been researched and are admitted, meaning the products are solid, following all state regulations and are the best coverage and best value for each insurance product for our members. BiiP Products can provide you and your clients with comprehensive insurance packages from reputable organizations. BiiP Qualified Agents meet stringent qualification standards to be able to sell the products available through BiiP. Are there other products available? Not yet, but your BIAW Insurance Work Group is currently researching additional BiiP insurance opportunities, and plans to expand the list of offered products in the future. Where can I get more information or purchase? Only from a BiiP Qualified Agent. BiiP Qualified Agents meet stringent requirements and standards to be able to sell the products available through BiiP. To find more information about the program or to locate qualified agents, click on Building Industry Insurance under the BIAW Programs tab at www.BIAW.com; or just type in http://biaw/com/ BIIP_overview.aspx. And, remember, by purchasing BiiP products, you are supporting your Local Association and fellow members, as well as BIAW. If you are a BIAW insurance agent who wishes to sell BiiP products: Please contact Karen Hall, BIAW special projects coordinator, at 360-352-7800 ext. 137 or karenh@biaw.com to receive the BiiP Management Company contact information. It was a great night put together by Tom Hagge and the Events committee. I have to say that the best thing about winning and even being nominated for Thom Richter any of these awards is the fact that Pharaoh’s Const. they are not the goal at the beginning of the year, or even as the year progresses. They are simply these people and companies being how they are. This, in my opinion is what makes our association great! Everyone that I talk to says that June is a really busy month. So, thank you now for taking the time to make the trip to Oak Harbor on the 17th at 5pm for the Afterhours networking event at Peoples Bank. It is events like these where relationships are made and nurtured as you drive to grow your business. It’s just a bonus that they are fun and have some great food involved. June is also ROII month. If you are an ROII member and have a check coming, the announcements should be coming soon as to when and where the eagle will fly. The month of June is rounded out with the annual trek east of the mountains to the BIAW Board meetings, BIAW Golf Tournament and Spike Party. Which reminds me, thanks for all the participation in Mays membership drive and remember that just because it is June doesn’t mean that you can’t recruit new members and join the Spike club yourself. Thom SICBA has 7 homes committed to the 2014 SICBA Home Tour. If you have a project that is new construction or even a remodel you would like to put on the tour, please call Brenda at the SICBA office. Programs Committee Chair is Tom Hagge The annual SICBA Awards Night on May 20th at Eaglemont Golf Course was a great night of networking and celebration of our superior membership and the leadership of this organization. The evening was full of entertainment. We started the evening with a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem by Chris Webb in celebration of Memorial Day and a salute to our military, past and present. This was the first time since I have been a member that we have had someone perform the anthem at an event, and I hope this is a start of a new tradition to celebrate Memorial Day each year. We were also entertained by our MC, Pat Grant. Pat brings a special flair to our events with his enthusiasm and Great Spirit. I think we are blessed to have Pat as a member and look forward to his support at future events. In addition, I would also like to thank all of those who were nominated for an award, and congratulations to those who won. Because of your dedication to this association we are able to continue on the path to the best HBA in the state. Last, but certainly not least, I want to thank all of those who attended the event. The evening was filled with happiness and laughter and the programs committee is proud to have been a part of it. A special thank you to all of the sponsors of the Awards Night. Puget Sound Energy, Business Bank, AZEK Building Products, The Enchanted Florist, Jacki Jacukuwicz of Peoples Bank, & AAA KARKTAK Glass & Closets. Without your support, these events would not be the same and we appreciate it very much. Our next event is Tuesday, June 17 for an Afterhours Networking Event at Peoples Bank in Oak Harbor. The last meeting at Peoples Bank had a great turnout, so let’s keep the ball rolling and support our Whidbey Chapter. It is always a good time. Mark your calendars for our future events: The annual SICBA Golf Tournament will be Friday, August 1st at Avalon Golf Course. Please get your teams together and register for this fun day of golf. The annual SICBA Picnic will be Tuesday, August 19th at Eagle Haven Winery in Sedro Woolley. More information to come. Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association 16 Skagit/Island Counties Builders Association 17 BIAW ROII PROGRAM RANKS BEST FOR 2012/2013 We have been waiting for the numbers to be finalized with L&I showing the performance of the different retro groups that represent the construction industry for 2012/13. We just received them and it is with great pleasure that I tell you BIAW’s program ended the year Number One (#1) for performance for the year with a 45% refund for the entire program. I have included the chart below for you to use to compare your program with the BIAW program if your company is in a different program. Or, if your company is in the BIAW ROII program I’m sure you would like to enjoy knowing the staff at BIAW has been working hard on your behalf to close claims and get the most money back they possibly can for you as a member. There are a few criteria that must be met before you can be in the program and they are: 1. You must be registered as a contractor in Washington State and be paying L&I premiums on your employees in a category that is construction related. Once you have fulfilled this requirement, all your L&I premiums are admitted including those for administrative staff. 2. Your company must agree to a Kept on Salary policy. This is for 30 working days. L&I will pay 1/2 the salary and it will not affect your performance factor. 3. You must complete a free class called The ABC’s of Claim Management given by BIAW and offered in different locations throughout the state. Call SICBA and ask when the next class will be held and be sure to sign up for it. There is also a survey you will probably have to do as part of the underwriting that is also being required for retro programs. 4. If you are a new company you must have paid L&I premiums for one quarter totaling $5000 without any claims. Please understand this is only for new companies that have just started doing business. If your company has been in business for some time, you do not have to meet this requirement. All you have to do is be positive—that is paying more premiums than you have claims. 5. You do NOT have to have a minimum amount of L&I premiums to apply. A few years ago BIAW’s program was changed that required you to have more than $10,000 in premiums for the year in order for you to qualify to be in the program. This is not the case today. If you are intrigued and interested in the program, by all means, apply. Go to the BIAW website and complete the release form that will allow BIAW to obtain your company’s history. And just because you might have an exemplary record with L&I does not mean you won’t benefit from this program. Quite the contrary—the better record your company has with L&I the better your chances are of receiving a larger portion of your premiums back. And, who wouldn’t want that?
