Jake Jabs started American Furniture Warehouse
(AFW) with one store in Denver, CO in 1975 and under
his leadership AFW has expanded into a fourteen-store
operation that has experienced a remarkable growth
trend over the years.
As he has been since the beginning, Jabs is responsible
for the day-to-day operations of the company and also
oversees the company’s team of buyers.
Today, American Furniture Warehouse is one of the top retail furniture companies
in the U.S. and one of the largest privately-held businesses in Colorado.
The self-taught businessman credits American Furniture’s success to “the basic
American philosophy of hard work, long hours, self-confidence, the courage to take
risks, and the desire to give value and service to every customer."
The fourth of nine children, Jabs was born and raised in rural Montana, and his
parents were immigrants from Russia and Poland who fled communism. Jabs’
credits his family for providing him a strong work ethic, a sense of family, a love of
music and a love of freedom we have in America. In fact, this long-time musician’s
entrepreneurial career began by teaching guitar and starting a music store in
Bozeman, MT. He started to add furniture to his music store and determined
everybody needed furniture and not a guitar!
Jabs’ served as an officer in the Air Force and has traveled throughout more than
50 countries and has made a lifelong study of various forms of government and
business. He often speaks to high school and college students on topics such as
the basics of business and the keys to success.
In addition, he has written numerous articles, including "Free Enterprise and the
Land of Opportunity" and "We Must Save Small Business," as well as articles on
Russia and Poland. His autobiography, "An American Tiger," was published in 2000
and his latest book “Thriving in Tough Times” published in 2011 are available online
at www.afwonline.com, Amazon Kindle, Barnes and Noble Nook, or any of American
Furniture Warehouse locations.

Honey’s Happenings……
September greetings, Everyone!
Amazing it is already back-to-school time of year! Transportation and distribution providers
have been busy delivering students’ back to school materials everywhere we want them to
be again this year. What about the youth that you know? Were the correct selections of
school supplies available in the shopping locations that you frequent? Did the new school
clothes, shoes and youth sporting equipment make their way to the stores closest to you?
Thanks to good forecasting and planning and well executed operations processes, we have come to expect that what we
need will be right where we want to find it. As operations professionals, we know the challenges behind the store-front to
execute the supply plan as a well-oiled machine!
The new APICS Certification in Logistics, Transportation and Logistics, CLTD, emphasizes this relevancy in managing your
physical supply chain. Be sure to check out the schedule of the new CLTD courses in the newsletter and join us in class soon!
I hope you are able to take advantage of the variety of learning opportunities offered by the Colorado APICS Chapter and I

Welcome to Fall, Football Season, and Classes!
In this Newsletter you will find the schedule for the Fall 2016 CPIM and CSCP Education
Courses. I hope there is something that can help improve your supply chain knowledge.
If not, please let me know along with your suggestion on something you would like to see
offered by Colorado APICS.
Fall is the time for Broncos Football and it looks to be another GREAT year. New Classes,
Fall Leaves, Cooler Weather and Football Games, what more can you ask for!
In August we started the Pilot CLTD course, the only one of its kind on the planet. We have a full class and it is going well and
working toward conclusion on 9/17/16. These folks will be working to take the exam in the fall and get a newly minted CLTD
certification. We will have a CLTD course starting in Late January or Early February if you are interested please contact
myself or Karla Biggs-Gregory.

Please complete your registration early. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis and some
facilities have limited class space. In addition, classes may be canceled if there is insufficient enrollment.
Classes run from 1 to 10 weeks. Generally, eight/ten-week courses meet once per week and four/five-week
courses meet twice per week. Saturday classes are 8 hours plus an hour for lunch. If you have any questions

How are APICS Programs Helping MillerCoors?

Over the past three years, MillerCoors has had a “Thirst for Learning” according to one MillerCoors Executive. Over the past 3
years MillerCoors has encouraged over 120 supply chain professionals to participate in CPIM, CSCP and CLTD APICS certifications,
and combined, they have spent 1000’s of hours improving their knowledge of Supply Chain Management. Matt Williams, CSCP,
Supply Chain Planning Director for MillerCoors is a major supporter of APICS Colorado and our APICS education and the rainmaker
for improvement in the Supply Chain. Matt agreed to allow me to interview him about what the APICS Colorado Chapter
programs and APICS Education and Certification are doing to help their Supply Chain professionals at MillerCoors. I want to
thank Matt for his time and effort in this interview as well as his commitment to APICS and Excellence in the Supply Chain
Management, as well as his commitment to the concept of life-long learning. I met Matt about 11 years ago and have gotten
the opportunity to know him over the years. Take a look at what Matt has to say about what he is receiving and expects to
receive from APICS programs.
Roger: How many years have you been at Coors?
Matt: I have been at MillerCoors for 21 years.
Roger: What positions have you held in your 21 years at MillerCoors?
Matt: I have held 5 or 6 positions over the years, I have been in beer supply and packaging, I started in brewing planning.
Roger: How many years have you been an APICS Member?
Matt: I have been a member of the Colorado Chapter for 11 years.
Roger: What APICS Certifications do you hold?
Matt: CSCP, Certified Supply Chain Professional.
Roger: What does your management think of APICS?
Matt: Our Chief Supply Chain Officer is very supportive, he sends a personal note to each person that completes an APICS
Certification!
Roger: Many MillerCoors folks attend APICS Colorado dinner meetings each month and/or our tours, what do you think you
gain from that?
Matt: It gives us a chance to connect with other supply chain professionals, helps people get out of their shell and helps us to
benchmark against other companies’ supply chain processes.
Roger: Has APICS networking helped you to find new folks to hire?
Matt: Yes, good talent is hard to find and we really like to find folks with APICS experience or education. We hired a
professional that I met at one of your spring dinner meetings.
Roger: Have APICS Education or certification helped YOU in your job/career?

Matt: Yes, the CSCP program and the CPIM courses helped me with knowledge of additional concepts that I was not familiar
with.
Roger: How has APICS Education helped?
Matt: 120+ professionals have earned or are in the process of becoming certified in CSCP, CPIM or CLTD, and this education
is helping us to better speak the same supply chain language. It is helping both mature professionals and the younger
workforce, both formally and informally.
Roger: You participated in all 5 of the CPIM courses, what areas of that program helped you?
Matt: Yes, it helped me with some areas like Capacity Management where I wanted to increase my knowledge.
Roger: What Areas of CSCP have helped MillerCoors and why?
Matt: As I said, it is helping both mature and new professionals at MillerCoors. CSCP is helping us to align with industry
standards. CSCP is helping us with inventory management and capacity management and is helping us prepare and build a
foundation for our upcoming ERP implementation and allowing us to share the same language. This language also extends to
our 100’s of MillerCoors distributors and is helping us communicate better with them.
Roger: What Benefits has MillerCoors and/or you personally gained by being involved with APICS?
Matt: In addition to the things we have talked about, I think that we get a lot out of the APICS plant tours that the Colorado
Chapter offers. I think we learn a lot seeing how folks conduct their plant and supply chain activities. I especially liked the
Leprino Foods and FedEx tours.
Roger: What incentives are you using to get folks to spend time on the APICS certifications?
Matt: We are getting really good commitment from the folks we let into our APICS certification programs. We commit to
them that we will pay for it and we will give them company time to complete study sessions and they must study further on
their own time and complete the exam. Some of the incentive has been peer pressure because they realize the company
values the certifications and effort it takes to get them. This is one attribute we look at when evaluating folks for job
promotions.
Roger: What do your folks and you think of the new CLTD program?
Matt: Too early to tell, we have 14 people signed up but have just now begun to look at the material, so far it looks good.
Roger: What areas do you think APICS can improve the CPIM, CSCP or CLDT?
Matt: The Colorado Chapter has been great to work with. A suggestion for the CPIM and CSCP programs would be to tighten
them up a little. That is, to be a little more concise and not repeat the same concepts.
Roger: You have sent several folks through APICS CPIM, CSCP and CLDT programs, what do you hope are the benefits?
Matt: I believe there are three areas of concern in a supply chain; People, Processes and Systems. APICS programs can help
us with all three areas. We want to be ready for our ERP Go-live and these programs will help us with our transformation,
they help us understand the ERP language, we can pay now or later for this knowledge. We are expecting better forecast
accuracy and better coordination with our distributors. For example, we now stock more inventory at distributors that have
less accurate forecasts. We hope to be able to better link Sales and Operations Planning for multiple supply chain players
from Suppliers to Customers.
Roger: Are there specific areas of improvement that MillerCoors is seeing?
Matt: Yes, some of the areas I have already mentioned, but we are also seeing some intangible successes. Being involved in
APICS is helping our folks see they have a career path in supply chain management. They see that supply chain management
is bigger and more involved than they think. We are getting great commitment from our folks and it is really defining supply
chain as a profession in our company.

As many of you know, our stretch of road is both sides of I-70 from just before the Genesee Park exit to just after
the Evergreen exit. It includes the buffalo and truck pullout and 10 entrances or exits to the freeway. It is a beautiful
stretch of highway with high and low, and near and far mountain views.
Each time we have a cleanup, it disgusts me that we have people living among us that are pigs. Below is a partial
list of some of the things we found. Some items can be explained as they were from accidents or could have easily
blown out of cars but much of this stuff was thrown out of passing vehicles.
As you might expect water bottles are the most popular item to throw out your car window in the mountains.
