I am delighted to share with you just as the trees are blossoming and the buds have burst into beautiful flowers, our beloved Sorority, Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. is alive and breaming with hope, excitement and renewal. It’s Spring! I of the College of Nursing, and many faculty, family and friends of the nine beautiful Tau Chi Betas. I was delighted to see many of the Tau Chi Betas at the Northeast Regional Meeting held at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Dover, Delaware. I have had the privilege to attend all of the Regional Conferences and to meet and talk with many of our members individually and in small groups. Communication is the key to success and as I have traveled across the country to the various Conferences, I have heard your voices. I love the excitement and the gracious kindness that permeated throughout the conferences. May 2015 is an exciting time for both the Iota Chi Chapter of the Bronx, New York and Theta Chi Chapter in Queens, New York as both Chapters celebrate the 50th Anniversary of their original chartering. Each Chapter expects to have original charter members in attendance as they celebrate this Golden Anniversary. I congratulate and thank both Iota Chi Chapter and Theta Chi Chapter for their ongoing contributions to the success of the Sorority and the residents of New York that they serve. In December 2014, I traveled to Seton Hall University in South Elcedo L. Bradley MEd, RN Supreme Basileus _______________ Orange, New Jersey where the Sorority’s newest Beta Chapter, was charted by Tau Chi Chapter. As we “Embrace Change and Meet the Challenges of Healthcare Organizational Effectiveness in the New Dawn,” I applaud you, my Sorors and Fraters for the positive impact the Chapters, Regions and the members of the National Board continue to demonstrate through the actualization of our Sorority Motto “Service for Humanity,” in the communities and other populations that we serve. Well after Spring comes Summer and Boulé 2015. The Westin Hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana awaits our arrival. Please come to Indiana and hear the outstanding educational sessions including the presentations by two of our Honorary Sorors, Dr. C. We have initiated the electronic submission of the Service Report and more than half the chapters are utilizing this tool. There have been minor issues which we are working on to make user friendly. The changes will be forthcoming. To date we have 400 entries into our electronic reporting system. A copy of each region’s reporting data will be mailed by May 31, 2015 to all directors and chapter basilei. This information will also be shared with the Research Committee. As we prepare for Boulè, this is a friendly reminder that we will be honoring the sorors and fraters with 25 and 50 years of uninterrupted service. If you will achieve 25 or 50 years between June 1, 2013 and May 31, 2015, please submit your name, chapter name and intake date to the 1st Supreme Anti-Basileus by May 1, 2015. Killian Greetings Sorors and Fraters The 63rd Bi-Annual Boulè’ and Education Conference is approaching with plans for an extraordinary experience for all. The educational theme is Health Promotion through Globalization, Interprofessional Collaboration, and Enhanced Access to Care. There are excellent speakers and topics planned to address issues surrounding the educational theme as well as responses to the needs assessment sent earlier this year. The office of Second Supreme Anti-Basileus, Provider Unit, and Education Committee are certain this will be an exciting and memorable conference for all who attend. Her topic was “Integrative Health Therapies: A Way for Life Longevity.” ____________ Omega Chi Chapter Sorors P. Payne Dublin and D. Lindsay-Salmon presented on kidney disease to approximately 230 congregants at Vanderveer Park United Methodist Church on March 22, 2015. This was followed by blood pressure screening and health counseling after the services. Sorors Janet Williams, RN, CNM and Zenobia Richbourgh, RN, BSN, PNP student, presented “Ready, Set, Go Preconception Health at the Barack Obama Elementary School in Hempstead, NY on January 15, 2015 to parents, educators and school staff members. This was made possible through a grant from the March of Dimes. Prematurity prevention, health promotion, STD education and disease prevention was presented. Soror Zenobia Richbourgh presented on Kidney Health at the Jackson Memorial AME Zion Church in Hempstead, NY to the Phi Chi Chapter members presented the Heart Truth program, A Red Dress Affair in conjunction with Young Women’s Initiative of Bethel AME Church and the National Alumnae Association of Spelman College/Augusta Chapter on February 7, 2015. Phi Chi Chapter members present monthly on eye health and disease prevention to seniors at the Henry Brigham Community Center, Keysville Seniors Center, East View Community Center, and Shiloh Community Center. Phi Chi Chapter members presented the National Kidney Sunday Program at 9 churches March 2015 reaching over 900 participants. Soror Angie Holland prepares and sends out Quarterly Health Tips for sorors to use at their churches or in the work place. Soror Angeline Williams-White organized AARP Fraud Watch Network along with ‘Strengthening the Family’ workshops in conjunction with musical and worship services. Soror Carolyn Byrd can be heard weekly on the radio WKZK 94.7 at 9am Wednesdays providing information on health and wellness. Sorors attended/participated/ presented in the Mental Health Summit sponsored by Georgia Regents University Department of Kinesiology and Health Science in Partnership with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Augusta Alumnae Chapter. Phi Chi Chapter and Lucy Craft Laney Museum of History Health Initiative presented “I’m Fine, And You?” at the Mental Health Summit. Phi Chi Chapter members participated with Paine College at their Annual Health Fair providing education and Blood pressure screening. ____________ MIDDLEWEST REGION Eta Chi Chapter Soror Sharron Crowder, PhD, RN will be presenting at a conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico hosted by Sigma Theta Tau July 23-27, 2015. Soror Crowder’s topic will be “Strategies for Developing State Legislative Fellowships in Nursing Programs.” _____________ Disease awareness to the employees of Jackson Park Hospital March 2015. During their March health assessment the employees with diabetes and/or hypertension received one on one education/counseling. Lambda Chi Chapter Sorors Paula Smith and Toni Oats were presenters at the NCLEX review which was held by the Chicago Chapter National Black Nurses’ Association April 2015. Soror Smith presented Mental Health and Soror Oats presented normal and high risk obstetrics. Soror Toni L. Oats presented Clinical Practice: Electronic Medical Records Workshop during the 50th Middlewest Regional Conference April 2015. ____________ Soror Thelma Phillips did a podium presentation: A Mile in my Patients Shoes at the Midwest Regional Nursing Society (MNRS) 2015. ____________ Alpha Eta Chapter Honorary Soror Barbara J. Nichols presented Diversity in Healthcare at the 27th Annual Chicago National Black Nurses Day celebration and program on February 27, 2015. Alpha Eta Chapter participated in the 1st annual health fair held by the Chicago Central Section of the National Council of Negro Women Inc. Alpha Eta Chapter presented information on Kidney Disease and performed blood pressure screenings March 2015. Alpha Eta Chapter sorors presented Kidney Sunday in 8 churches March 2015. Over 200 parishioners received pamphlets, with 60 blood pressure screenings done with 10 referrals. Sorors did face to face follow-ups on the 10 referrals. Sorors Glenda Weems and Toni Oats presented Kidney 2015 BOULÉ ISSUE MIDDLESOUTH REGION Zeta Chi Chapter Soror Ann Thompson coordinated a breast cancer awareness program in collaboration with the Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at South Union Church of Christ on October 26, 2014. The program consisted of a 20 minute monologue from a cancer survivor outlining her steps from finding the first lump to mammogram to treatment and life thereafter. Additionally, she emphasized the importance of self-breast exams, annual mammograms, and diet and weight control. A risk assessment CHI LINE for breast cancer was completed by participants with individual counseling by a physician. A discussion, followed by a question and answer session, was conducted on breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis and breast cancer in men. Over 150 men and women participated in the program. Sorors Dorothy Stephens and Nancy Harris assisted in program implementation. Zeta Chi Chapter members of South Union Church presented a poster display and distributed printed information to increase congregational awareness of “healthy hearts.” Apples and gifts were presented to survivors. The congregation participated in recognition of “Go Red Day” by wearing red to indicate awareness of problems and solutions to improving heart functioning. There were approximately 350 in attendance that had access to the information. ____________ SOUTHWEST REGION Delta Chapter Soror Lovene Knight presented “Intake/Induction by the Book-Ritual That Is” at the Southwest Regional Conference in Colorado Springs, CO on March 6, 2015. ____________ 15 Section V Awards, Honors, Appointments NORTHEAST REGION Alpha Chapter Soror Dorinda Phillips was promoted to Professional Staff Development Specialist at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Washington, DC. Soror Barbara J. Hatcher was appointed to the editorial board of JOCEPS, Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences and Quality in Primary Care Journal. Soror Lucinda Harris has been named Soror of the Year for Alpha Chapter. Soror Dr. Bernadine Lacey, honorary member of Alpha, received the R. Louise McManus medal from Teachers College Columbia University. Dr. McManus was the first person ever to earn a PhD in nursing. The American Academy of Nursing named Soror Lacey a “Living Legend.” Soror Gail Riddick has also been invited to become a member of Howard University Golden Key International Honor Society. ____________ Soror Tawanda Smith was recognized for her achievement of Adult Health in the African American community during the 2015 Black History Month celebration. Soror Patricia Kennedy, PhD, ED, was acknowledged for her work in Nursing Education during 2015 Black History Month Celebration. Soror Tawanda Smith was named Chaplain for Baltimore City Police Department. Soror Alice Wright received the 2015 ‘A Tribute to Women of Color Pathfinder Award’. Soror Beatrice Royster received an Unsung Hero Award from the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for the Baltimore City Health Department. She was recognized for her service in the Immunization Clinic Medicare /Model of Care/EIT Anthem/Government Business Division February 2015. ____________ Omicron Chapter Soror Rev. Dr. Rose Ellington-Murray was recipient of an award from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Bronx Chapter’s 17th Annual Awards Ceremony, “Standing on Their Shoulders – A Celebration of Wisdom of Women: Achievement/Wisdom” on March 7, 2015. Special congratulations to her for the honor bestowed upon her. ____________ Omega Chapter Sorors Barbara Crosby, Verna Gaskins, DeLois Hamilton and Gail Marshall were given Community Service Awards by the Black Nurses Association of Baltimore. ____________ Gamma Chapter Eta Chapter Gamma Chapter won 1st place at the Northeast Regional Conference for total members reclaimed. The chapter reclaimed total of 7. Gamma Chapter won 3rd place at the Northeast Regional Conference for total number of beta transfers. One beta transferred. Soror Katia Guerrier, BSN, RN was promoted to Clinical Manager of the Medical/Surgical Oncology Unit at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, Virginia Beach, Virginia April 2015. Frater Joseph Hicks, MSN, BSN, RN, was hired by Anthem as Manager 1-HCMS/ The Virginia Commissioner of Health recently appointed Soror Melody Armstrong to a four year term on the Advisory Council on Health Disparity & Health Equity (ACHDHE) for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The purpose of the ACHDHE is to provide subject matter expertise as it relates to health disparities among vulnerable populations. Olanitori, MS, RN; Advisor/Recruiter/Faculty Norfolk State University’s Department of Nursing & Allied Health, was selected by the YWCA South Hampton Roads as an Outstanding Woman of the Year, in the area of maternal-child medicine. She was recognized for her role in the first delivery of a baby conceived by in-vitro fertilization in the US and her continued work educating and caring for vulnerable populations. She was one of 13 women honored who have epitomized the YWCA mission: “Eliminating racism, empowering women”. Omega Chapter received an award at the Northeast Regional Conference for participation in the November 2014 March of Dimes Prematurity Awareness month. Sorors Barbara Royster and Linda Taylor-Lowry facilitated a prematurity awareness class at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth VA. Omega Chapter is indeed proud to have our soror receive this honor. ____________ Theta Chi Chapter Soror Mary Howell, Tamias, received a certificate of nomination for the 2015 Northeast Regional Unsung Hero Award. “Unsung Hero” is a person who makes a substantive yet unrecognized contribution.. That’s Soror Howell, always working diligently behind the scene. Her Omega Chapter sisters know how hard she works and how well deserving she is. We love and appreciate her and all of the contributions that she has made over the years to Omega Chapter. Soror Dr. Jamesetta HalleyBoyce received the Estelle Osborne Award from NYU School of Nursing. Soror Stanlee Richards was honored at the 369th Historical Society’s Women’s History Month Celebration. Soror Dr. Kamila Barnes received the Sojourner Truth Award from the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club, Laurelton Club. Soror Daphne Moore received the United Hospital Fund Auxiliary Volunteer Award. Soror Luseni Umu Hawa [a neophyte] was appointed Assistant Director of Nursing at Henry J. Carter Specialty Hospital & Nursing Facility in Harlem. Soror Charlene Glasgow received an award for service during NBNA Black Nurses Day Celebration at Harlem Hospital. ____________ Iota Chi Chapter Soror Shirley Hayes was presented with an award for volunteering in the greeter program at the Charlotte- Douglas International Airport in North Carolina on December, 2014. She was recognized for 6 years of devoted and committed service. Soror Hayes also received an award on March 7, 2015 for being a volunteer in the “Host Association” on the Piedmont and Carolina trains in North Carolina. Governor McCrory declared March 7, 2015 as volunteer train host day. ____________ Tau Chi Chapter Soror Sandra Austin-Benn, MSN,APN, BC was elected to the Board of Directors, New Jersey State Nurses Association and installed on January 10, 2015 at NJSNA Headquarters in Trenton, NJ. Soror Tyea Santiago, BSN, RN was installed on January 10, 2015 as a member of the Nominating Committee. Soror Santiago was congratulated for becoming the VP Communications in Region 4, New Jersey State Nursing Association. Omicron Chapter has partnered with this Center for the past eight or nine years, and will continue this practice. This event has evolved into one of CHSCC’s most popular programs, reaching over 500 older adults each year. Soror Bridges began her education at Mt. Zion School in the bend of the Tennessee River in Landerdale County Alabama. She attended Alabama A & M College but graduated from Grady Nursing School in Atlanta, Georgia as a nurse cadet in 1947. Soror Bridges later earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Detroit. She was a lifelong student and teacher of nursing, maintaining her nursing license until her passing. She worked in hospitals and nursing homes in Tennessee, Alabama, Michigan, South Carolina and Illinois. Soror Bridges was an active member of Kappa Phi Chapter. The Times Daily Newspaper of Florence, Alabama quoted Soror Bridges in an article about her nursing career during Nurse Week 2014, “… I worked in VA hospitals and city hospitals. I didn’t care if they paid well or not, I just wanted to do the best for everybody… When that light came on and you were on my floor, you got up and answered it.” Her feisty nature and desire to do everything the right way earned her the label of ‘Sergeant Bridges’ among her fellow nurses. Unit Detention Center [ARYDC]. This was the second year that we were asked to support the youth at this facility by giving designated items to 40 (forty) youth that are incarcerated at ARYDC.
