2nd SUNDAY OF ADVENT - C
This week and next, our Gospel
readings invite us to consider John the Baptist
and his relationship to Jesus. John the Baptist
appears in the tradition of the great prophets,
preaching repentance and
reform to the people of
Israel. To affirm this, Luke
quotes at length from the
prophet Isaiah. John
baptizes for repentance and
for forgiveness of sins,
preparing the way for God's
salvation.
The three Synoptic
Gospels—Mark, Matthew,
and Luke—attest to the
importance of the baptism
of John in preparing for
Jesus. Only the Gospel of Luke, however,
extends the connection between these two
men to their birth.
The evangelist Luke is the author of
the Gospel that bears his name, and he also
wrote the Acts of the Apostles as a
continuation of the story of Jesus and the
Church. In these two works, Luke's sense of
time and history emerges. He identifies three
epochs of salvation history: the time before
Christ, the time of Christ, and the time of the
Church and the Holy Spirit. In today's Gospel
reading, as elsewhere, John the Baptist is
presented as the figure who bridges the time

before Christ and prepares the way for Christ's
own ministry.
In today's Gospel we also note Luke's
attention to political and historical detail.
Luke shows that salvation is
for all people and situated in
world events. Therefore,
Luke lists the political and
religious leaders at the time
of John's appearance in the
desert. Salvation is
understood as God's breaking
into this political and social
history.
John's preaching of the
coming of the Lord is a key
theme of the Advent season.
As John's message prepared
the way for Jesus, we too are called to prepare
ourselves for Jesus' coming. We respond to
John's message by repentance and reform of
our lives. We are also called to be prophets of
Christ, who announce by our lives the coming
of the Lord, as John did.
John saw from a distance what Jesus
the Messiah would accomplish through his
death and resurrection - pardon for our sins,
healing and restoration, and eternal life for all
who would believe in the Lord Jesus. Are you

Plotkeles/Kaledaiciai are once again available in the
Parish Office. It is a Lithuanian tradition that when we
are seated at the Kucios table, we share this symbol of
living bread – Jesus Christ as he comes into the world.
Christmas is fast approaching.
As we prepare to celebrate, let's remember our less fortunate
brothers and sisters in Lithuania. Beginning today,
and throughout Advent, donations to support soup
kitchens in Lithuania will be accepted in the church
vestibule. In the true Christmas spirit, why not
consider making a donation instead of buying gifts?
“Kūčios” is an evening of family and friends gathered
around a table, sharing a special meal, awaiting the birth of Jesus.
On that evening, we remember our departed loved ones and
celebrate with those who have returned from afar. This is a time
when no one should be alone.
The Franciscan Fathers invite those who have no one to
spend “Kūčios“ with, to join their table December 24th at 7 p.m.
Please register with the Parish Office by December 13th to assist
with the planning.
Donation $30.00 a person
Occasionally, volunteer assistance is needed at the parish.
Whether to help decorate the church for the holidays, to serve coffee
on special occasions, to assist with special mailings or parish spring
cleaning, extra hands are often needed.
The parish council is creating a registry of parishioners who would
be willing to be contacted as various needs arise. We will email you
with the details of each job - what, where, when, and approximately
how long it will take.
If you would like to give of your time and talents to your parish on
an ad hoc basis, please send an email to galiuprisideti@gmail.com.
The Lithuanian Folk Art Institute invites you to
a show and sale of handmade original art by members of
the institute. The show begins at 10 A.M. Sunday,
December 13, at Resurrection Parish.

Pope gives interview on Jubilee’s
'Revolution of Tenderness'
Pope Francis has given an
interview to a Catholic weekly magazine,
saying he hopes the forthcoming Jubilee
Year of Mercy will enable people to discover an
alternative to the atrocities, cruelty and exploitation of
our world today. The Pope also talks about his personal
discovery of God’s mercy in his own life and calls for a
“revolution of tenderness” to encourage more just,
tolerant and patient relationships between individuals
and nations.
In the interview with the official Jubilee
publication ‘Credere’, Pope Francis recalls that he
dedicated his first Angelus address and his first homily
in the Vatican parish of St. Anna to the theme of mercy,
noting that he’s following the teachings of his
predecessors, especially Pope John Paul II who
instituted Divine Mercy Sunday.
We have become so used to bad news of cruelty
and atrocities, the Pope says, but the world needs to
discover that God is our Father, that mercy exists and
that cruelty and condemnations are not the way
forward. The Church itself, the Pope adds, sometimes
falls into the temptation of following a hard line, of
stressing only the moral norms – but how many people
are excluded?
Reiterating the image of the Church as a field
hospital, binding up the wounds of the injured, Pope
Francis says this is the year of forgiveness and
reconciliation. On one hand, he says, we see the
production and trafficking of lethal weapons, the
murder of innocent people in the cruelest ways and the
exploitation of children – all of this is “sacrilege
against humanity”, created in the image of God the
Father, who says, “stop and come to me”.
Pope Francis says he goes to confession every
15 to 20 days because he also needs God’s mercy for
the mistakes and sins he commits. He recounts his very
first experience of God’s mercy in his own life, when
he walked into a confessional as a 17 year old in
Buenos Aires and walked out knowing that he was
called to consecrate his life to the Lord. That date,
September 21st, marked the feast of the conversion of
St. Matthew, he recalls, which is why he chose as his
bishop’s motto the Venerable Bede’s Latin words
describing Jesus’ calling of St. Matthew, ‘miserando
atque eligendo’ translated as ‘having mercy in choosing
(him)’.
Pope Francis also responds to a question about
the female face of the Church, saying it is not easy to
understand the maternity of God, so he prefers to speak
of the tenderness of God as our mother and father. If
we are open to this revolution of tenderness, the Pope
says, we ourselves will become more tolerant, more
patient and more tender, learning not to treat people as
objects. The Pope gives the example of an employer
who lays off his workers over the summer so that he
doesn’t have to pay the extra pension or social security
costs of a full time worker. If we are able to put
ourselves in that other person’s shoes, the Pope says,
then things change and we stop thinking about the
money in our own pockets.
Finally Pope Francis speaks of his spontaneous
way of embracing the sick and the elderly, in the same
way that a mother and father caress their new born
child. During the Jubilee year, the Pope concludes, he
will be suggesting different gestures every month to
highlight God’s mercy in our lives. (Vatican radio)
