21st Sunday in ordinary time - B
For our Gospel today we hear the
conclusion of the “Bread of Life discourse”
in the sixth chapter of John's Gospel. In the
preceding verses we have heard Jesus explain
that he is the Bread of Life, given so that
those who believe may have eternal life. This
discourse follows the miracle in which Jesus
fed more than five thousand
people with five barley loaves
and two fish. As Jesus has been
teaching these things, John's
Gospel describes a murmuring
crowd unable to accept Jesus'
words. John describes the
questioning of those considered
to be Jesus' own disciples.
Today's Gospel first
records the response of those in
the crowd who are described as Jesus'
disciples. Just as the larger crowd had
struggled with Jesus' teaching, these disciples
also cannot accept Jesus' words. He responds
by acknowledging their unbelief and by
reiterating that only those chosen by the
Father will follow Jesus to the end. John's
Gospel reports that many of those who had
been Jesus' disciples ceased to follow him at
this point. The number of people following
Jesus dwindled from a crowd of more than
5,000 to only 12 people. And it is to these
Twelve that Jesus now turns his attention.
Simon Peter's response to Jesus'
question as to whether those closest to him
will also leave, reminds us of the reports of
Sunday Missal
pg. 519;
Peter's confession of faith in the Synoptic
Gospels. Peter announces, on behalf of all the
Twelve, that they have come to believe all
that Jesus has taught about himself: Jesus is
the one from God in whom they have found
the path to eternal life.
This conclusion of the Bread of Life
discourse focuses on
personal faith in the life of
Christian discipleship. Each
person must make his or her
own judgment about who
Jesus is and in doing so
determine the way of life that
he or she will follow. God's
grace invites us to be Jesus'
disciples, but each person
must respond to the grace of
God and confess as his or her own the belief
that Jesus is the one from God. This faith
then commits us to the path of life, leading us

VYTAUTAS KERNAGIS EXHIBIT
Comprised of 40 photographs of famous Lithuanian
musician Vytautas Kernagis, this special exhibit,
which has traveled throughout all of Lithuania, will be
making its North American debut in Toronto this fall.
In addition, supplementary material from our very own archives, of
Maestro Kernagis’ performances
in Canada, will also be on display.
All are invited to view the exhibit at the Lithuanian
Museum-Archives in Mississauga (2185 Stavebank
Rd.) from September 8th to the 20th and to the opening
reception, to be held on September 13th at 2 p.m.
The Museum-Archives is open to visitors Tuesdays and
Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A call to prayer, commemorating Black Ribbon Day
On August 23rd, we commemorate Black Ribbon Day. We pray to God, to bless our country
and protect its freedom, to remember the Ukraine, in particular which celebrates its Independence
Day on the 24th of August. In response to Pope Francis' relentless call to pray for peace in the
world, let us pray to God for the Ukraine and for all Ukrainians at this Sunday’s Mass and in our
own personal prayers.
Black Ribbon Day, reminds us of the secret negotiations of 1939, between Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany
— the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact secret protocols — that determined the destiny of Lithuania and the other Baltic
states, resulting in the loss of their independence. On this day, in forming the Baltic Way — a human chain connecting
the three Baltic capitals of Talinn, Riga and Vilnius — the world witnessed the strength and unity of the Baltic people,
and our burning desire for freedom. Lithuania’s freedom was gained not only through political and civic action, but
through sincere prayer, ceaselessly emanating from the Lithuanian people's hearts. Together with us, in prayer for
peace at that time, were people all over the world.
May the joint history of the past inspire solidarity in the present. Embrace, in prayer, the Ukraine — a country
depressed, suffering military conflict — and its people. Let us ask the Lord, that peace, respect for human dignity and
the desire for freedom prevail throughout the entire world.

Pope Francis at audience: catechesis on dignity of work
Pope Francis held his weekly General Audience in the Paul VI Hall
on Wednesday. The Holy Father focused his catechetical remarks on
work. In the English summary read out following the main catechesis in
Italian, the Pope explained that work complements our moments of
celebration and is also a part of God’s creative design. “Through work,”
said Pope Francis, “the family is cared for and children are provided with
a dignified life.” The catechesis went on to explain that, in this way, the
common good is served, as witnessed by the example of so many fathers and mothers who
teach their children the value of work for family life and society.
Addressing this theme during the main catechesis in Italian, Pope Francis departed from
his prepared text to say, “It makes me sad, when I see people without work, who do not find
work and haven’t the dignity of bringing bread home – and it cheers me when I see that
political leaders make great efforts to find jobs and to seek to make sure that everyone has a
job.” The Holy Father went on to say, “Work is sacred, work gives dignity to a family: we must
pray that work be not lacking in any family.”
The Holy Father went on to explain that, when we reduce work to profit and disregard its
effects on humanity and the world, the environment and our lives suffer. “God has given
Christian families the challenge and mission to make present the foundations of his creation: a
true understanding of the identity of man and woman and the bond they share, their call to
bring children into the world, and the gift of work in making the world ever more fruitful and
hospitable,” his catechesis continued. Pope Francis concluded with a prayer: “May God help us
to embrace this call in joy and hope, especially amidst the many challenges we face today.”
