A Brotherhood Aimed Towards Education
NEWSLETTER FOR MAY 2011
As I am sitting here thinking of what to write for
this month, I must first thank our past president Kevin
(Q-Ball) Flynn for his service to our great chapter these
past few years. It was kind of a shock to have him
tender his resignation at last months meeting, but it was
necessary for him as he has been out of work for so
long and is now doing something at night to catch up.
Good luck to him and I hope things start looking up for
all those caught in the “out of work” status!
Today it was in the high 80's and in some places
even hit 90 degrees. I saw a lot of bikes out on the road
and they all appeared to be riding in a very sane
manner. Not that I didn't think they would, but even the
crotch rockets were taking it easy. Hopefully this is the
result of a motorcycle safety training class they might
have taken from one of our colleges or having been in a
drivers ed class that was being taught by one of our
ABATE of IL fine Safety & Ed volunteers. We are so
lucky to have these great people that give of their time
for such an important cause. In the early 70's, I was a
policeman and the juvenile officer where I worked. A
very important part of my job was working at the high
school and participating occasionally showing an old
police motor officer's training film to drivers ed classes.
They all knew I rode one both on and off the job, so I
had the credentials for giving the class. That was some
40 years ago and I still run into people that thank me for
making them aware of what it means to people who ride
motorcycles to be safe and aware at all times of their
surroundings.
By the time you receive this the "Topless Tour" will be
about two weeks away and we are pretty well geared up
for the event. I, along with the other board members, have
passed out fliers and spread the word about as much as
possible, but don't hesitate to get the word out to everyone
you know who rides a bike or who just wants to be
involved in this event with us. Volunteers are still needed
for various positions and a great way to meet people and
share our enthusiasm for motorcyclists rights is to get
involved. It's only one day and you will never forget it.
I want to thank everyone for their support in my
assuming the President’s position for the rest of the year. I
want you to also know that I am eager to keep the torch
burning at So. DuPage and want to hear any and all
suggestions or questions on how our board can be more
effective in reaching the goals of ABATE of IL and our
chapter as a whole. I also want to thank Diane Stephenson
for taking on the responsibility of handling our products.
I hope everyone has a fun and safe summer and that
you get out and ride as much as possible. See you at the
May meeting!
TEN YEARS OF RIDING TOPLESS
The state of Illinois has over 300,000 licensed
motorcyclists that own close to 500,000 motorcycles.
With numbers like that you would think they would
have more of an interest in what is happening around
the state.
Since 1997, members of Southern DuPage chapter
of A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois have worked tirelessly to keep
the roadways of this state free, because as we know
FREEDOM ISN’T FREE. Forces both domestic
and foreign are constantly challenging the freedoms
guaranteed to us by the Constitution of the United States.
There is little we can do about foreign threats except to
support our young men and women in the service of our
country. There is however a lot we can do right here in
Illinois to protect ourselves. As a group we have a limited
scope of interests. We concentrate our efforts only on
issues that concern motorcycles and off highway vehicles.
This little slice of the freedom pie my not seem like much
but it has kept thousands of us busy for over twenty years.
Recently the poster boy of terrorism was eliminated in a
country far, far away. What the heck does that have to do
Sincerely, Roger Treend,
President Southern DuPage Chapter Abate of Illinois

with motorcycle rights here in Illinois? Government of,
for, and by the people is a concept taught to us since
grade school. This idea that we guide and control our
own destiny is what gives us our national pride. This
idea is also a danger to the despots around the world.
Our freedoms scare the heck out of them.
Let me tell you what scares the heck out of me.
Lack of involvement in domestic issues scares me.
Other people deciding what is best for me because they
think that I must be too stupid to even put one foot in
front of the other without their help, scares me. The
poorly named “Patriot Act” scares me.
Because of threats from overseas there is a
movement afoot to limit our freedoms here in order to
make us safer. Believe me, reducing our freedom of
movement does not make us safer. Limiting our right to
peaceful assembly does not make us safer.
Our safety lies within us, it’s our ability to make
informed decisions on our own. Our safety is enhanced
through our right to organize like minded individuals. Our
safety comes through education, not LEGISLATION!
Please come out Sunday June 5th 2011, and join us as
we celebrate our tenth Topless Tour, a great ride in the
country with over a hundred miles between stoplights. And
as always this run is free to active duty military personnel,
and open to all bikes and riders, with or without a helmet.
Thanks to A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois we live in a “FREE
STATE”.
That means we still have the right to choose what we
wear while riding our motorcycles.
RIDE FREE, RIDE AWARE

As you are well aware by now, unless you either
live in a cave or drive a Prius, (tomato/tomahto)
gasoline prices have gone through the roof. Even
though my bike doesn’t have a roof, I find it
unconscionable to pay $20 to fill up my motorcycle.
going up, the station had to hire a kid full time to change
the prices every hour. Prices shot up quicker than a junkie
under a bridge, but now that it is time for them to come
back down they are going to take their sweet time doing it.
This tells me the government is involved. So what can we
do about this travesty? I don’t know. This is an editorial,
not a how to column. But if you have any ideas, let me
know.
This week we were told that we could look forward
to gas prices that are 50 cents lower by June. Excuse me
Mr. Exxon but why the wait. When gas prices were
In the meantime, keep riding your scoot and every
time stop next to some hump in a Hummer, smile and say,
