The Neti Pot
Dr. Toby K. Hallowitz, ND, MSOM, LAc
The neti pot is a traditional tool used for centuries as
one of the cleansing practices in yoga. Nasal lavage is a
very simple technique which involves using a “neti pot”
filled with warm, slightly salted water. The user inserts
the nose cone into one nostril, adjusting the position of
the head and pot to allow the water to flow out of the
other nostril. While the water is flowing through your
nasal passages, breathe through your mouth. After half a
pot has flowed in one direction, you switch nostrils, reversing the water flow. When the pot is empty, you must
properly dry your nose.
In this process, the salt water, or nasal irrigation solution, moves through your nasal passages, removing mucus and other inhaled debris and soothing the lining
of your nose. Sinuses are a perfect breeding ground for
infection, since they’re warm and moist. The salt water
irrigates them, so that, instead of fluid pooling, your passages open up and drain.
This technique is useful for chronic sinusitis (both prevention and treatment) and allergic rhinitis, and is safe to

use with children, since research shows its effectiveness
and safety. One study performed in 2002 concluded,
“daily hypertonic saline nasal irrigation improves sinus
related quality of life, decreases symptoms, and decreases
medication use in patients with frequent sinusitis. Primary care physicians can feel comfortable recommending this therapy.”
A 2010 randomized controlled study looked at using saline nasal lavage to prevent allergy symptoms in
pregnant women with seasonal allergic rhinitis. Twenty-two women used a hypertonic saline solution three
times daily, while 23 women used no local nasal therapy
during a six-week period corresponding to the pollen
season. Patients were invited to keep a daily record of
symptoms (runny nose,
obstruction, nasal itching and sneezing). They
concluded that “nasal
rinsing is a safe and effective treatment option
in pregnant women
with seasonal allergic
rhinitis.”
Dr. Toby Hallowitz is Pilgrim’s resident naturopathic doctor and
acupuncturist, taking appointments weekly in Pilgrim’s Wellness Clinic and consulting in the Supplements Department. To

Dr. Toby Hallowitz spent seven years developing a thriving integrative health care
practice in Western New York before relocating with his wife and son to North
Idaho. He grew up in the Washington, DC metro area, obtaining his undergraduate
education from the University of Rochester, NY and his Doctorate in Naturopathic
Medicine and Master of Science in Oriental Medicine from the National College
of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, OR. Dr. Hallowitz orients his treatments
towards the patient, their body and their lifestyle, rather than centering his
treatments on disease.
As a licensed therapist in private practice for 34 years, Jeffrey provides individual
and couples counseling, retreats and group therapy for those making life style
changes. Through Jeffrey’s work, hundreds are now living a fuller life with a
positive sense of self, awareness of how to handle difficult emotions, effective
communication skills and less stress in their daily challenges.
What is your favorite warm weather activity? Hiking in the mountains.
What do you personally do on a daily basis to stay healthy? Jog, meditate, eat
organic foods and be aware of all the expressions and forms of love in the world.
C L I N I C
Share a personal health/healing recovery experience. I had an
amazing healing experience in the mountains of Austria. I was
very sick with Crohn’s Disease, a lot of pain, vomiting,
diarrhea and fatigue. While helping family take care of a
village’s cows up on an alpine alm, I completely changed my
lifestyle for two weeks. After eating very simple and nutritious
meals, drinking pure mountain water, breathing clean crisp
mountain air, resting and exploring the nature, all of my symptoms completely vanished! This led me to search for a profession
where I could both learn more, and educate others, about the
healing power of nature. I found this at NCNM, becoming
both a naturopathic doctor and east Asian medical
practitioner. As a result, I am able to completely
stay off of pharmaceutical medications.

Share a personal health/healing recovery experience. I have come to
understand that the purpose of each day is for healing. This understanding began, in particular, many years ago, when I was jogging
in the woods. I was suddenly overcome with what seemed like
endless grief. Waves of sadness for my pain, the pain in the
world and what was to be a future of pain if something did not
change, broke through me. The force of this pain left me with a
fierce intention to focus on healing pain by understanding its root
causes and that it’s often a cry for love. I have come to honor both
deep pain and incredible joy, and better accept whatever the
moment brings. This keeps me focused on ways of living that
promote healing – compassionate listening, being present,
making space for my or another’s feelings, eating well and
loving. These days, I am less focused on comparing,
judging, being willful and behaving or thinking in
ways contrary to the healing purpose of each day.
What made you decide to become a Naturopathic Doctor/Acupuncturist? My
personal healing experience with Crohn’s Disease and my appreciation for the history
of medicine.
What do you personally do on a daily basis to stay healthy? Take my supplements,
drink my fish oil, eat my yogurt and sip my favorite Pu-erh green tea.
What are you reading right now? Deep Nutrition: Why Your Genes Need Traditional
Food by Dr. Catherine Shanahan.
What is your favorite warm weather activity? Sailing on Lake Coeur d' Alene or Lake
Pend O’Reille.
What made you decide to become a Counselor/Psychologist? I have always been
interested in human nature, even as an adolescent. The fascination and curiosity
remains to this day.
What is your favorite music? Progressive Bluegrass, such as Mumford & Sons and Of
Monsters and Men. Also, cool children’s music, like Ellis Paul.
What are you reading right now? The Divided Mind: The Epidemic of Mindbody
Disorders by John E. Sarno, M.D. and Revelations of Divine Love by Julian of Norwich.
What is your favorite music? Any type of music that makes me want to just start
dancing like crazy is a favorite song!

BIOACTIVE INGREDIENTS WHERE NATURE AND SCIENCE MEET
it has also been clinically proven to decrease skin roughness and increase skin
luminosity and clarity.
BIOACTIVE INGREDIENTS
bioactive n. (bi’o ak’tiv) Relating
to a substance that has an
effect on living tissue.
MyChelle Dermaceuticals was founded
on the idea that nature and science can
be combined to create the most effective
and safest skin care products possible.
Our skin is a complex living organ—the
largest, in fact. Just as chemicals can harm
the skin, the proper ingredients can nourish and heal the skin. MyChelle ingredients are bioactive and the foundation of
all our products. When you buy a MyChelle product, you are buying the safest,
most effective product available.
WHY BIOACTIVES ARE BEST
Not that long ago scientists thought the
outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, was
made up of flat, dead skin cells that had
no interaction with living skin cells. Today,
we know this is not true. There are very
active layers within the epidermis featuring intricate interaction between the cells
in the epidermis and the growing, lively
cells located in the deeper (dermis) layers
of the skin. That’s why it’s so important to
apply ingredients that have proven to be
effective at a proper dosage and concentration. More importantly, the ingredients
you apply must be bioactive and safe.
All bioactive ingredients we choose serve
multiple therapeutic purposes. Some ingredients protect as well as nourish the
skin. Others have been proven to ease
inflammation, while positively stimulating
the immune system for proactive healing.
Kombuchka™ is a great example. Not only
is this fermented extract of black tea rich
in organic acids and important vitamins,
Many peptides (natural protein fractions)
found in MyChelle products are also great
examples of nontoxic, bioactive ingredients. MyChelle uses several key peptides
that they have been scientifically proven
to stimulate skin regeneration and repair.
Many of our bioactive peptide ingredients can actually help slow the skin’s aging
process.
In addition to peptides, many standardized, concentrated herbal and fruit extracts are also bioactive. SCO2 Totarol™
from the totara tree in New Zealand has
been shown to be effective against bacteria that can cause acne. Resveratrol has
anti-aging effects and is a powerful antioxidant. All of our bioactive ingredients
have been discovered as a result of cutting-edge technology, solid science and
proven research methods.
tion—the bioactive result consumers desire. MyChelle is proud to offer a 17% C
serum for the optimum fibroblast nourishment that is essential for collagen production.
Even something as simple as mixing the
ingredients together requires diligent scientific research. Our researchers have discovered that when we mix smaller batches
with less heat, we can keep our bioactive
ingredients active. This is more time-consuming and expensive, but it ensures the
effectiveness of our products. The purity,
efficacy and safety of our products have
always been a driving force at MyChelle.
After all, we use these products ourselves.
ALWAYS ONE STEP AHEAD
At MyChelle, we are constantly searching
for innovative technologies and scientific
advances in the world of nontoxic skin
care. We pay particular attention to the
benefits that both science and nature can
provide. We look closely at concentration,
dosage, synergy and vital aspects associated with formulating safe and effective
products. We are committed to always
being one step ahead. When you buy a
MyChelle product, you can be confident
you are getting the most technologically
advanced, natural skin care product available. Our products work, and we take
pride in that.

OTHER ADVANCES
As the leader in technologically advanced
nontoxic skin care, we constantly strive to
find innovative ways to nourish, restore
and support the structure and function
of the skin. We have uncovered numerous therapeutic, plant-based ingredients
and healing essential oils that have a wide
range of applications for skin care.
Advances in laboratory technology now
allow scientists to grow natural ingredients in the lab that are exactly the same
as substances found in nature. In fact, our
bioactive lab-grown ingredients are identical to food-grown vitamins and whole
food based supplements. MyChelle has
always been concerned with sustainability,
so it is important to us that the concentrations of our bioactive ingredients match
the scientific studies. A prime example of
this is our Perfect C Serum. Clinical studies
have clearly shown that L-Ascorbic Acid
(natural Vitamin C) can only be absorbed
topically if it is at a concentration of 10%
or more. This specific concentration has
been shown to enhance collagen produc-
