MULTIVITAMIN USE
ASSOCIATED WITH
LOWER HEART ATTACK
RISK IN WOMEN
An article published online on September 22, 2010 in the American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition reports an association
between multivitamin use and a reduced
risk of myocardial infarction (MI or heart
attack) in older women. The study included
2,262 women with a history of cardiovascular disease and 31,671 women with no
history of the disease who participated in
the Swedish Mammography Cohort established between 1987 and 1990. Among
women who had no history of the disease,
those who reported using a multinutrient
supplement had a 27 percent lower adjusted risk of heart attack than those who
were not supplement users. Using a multivitamin along with other supplements was
associated with a 30 percent lower risk, and
use for at least five years was linked to a 41
percent lower risk of myocardial infarction
compared to nonusers.

SAM SEZ
Festive
Holiday Wine
Selections
-Sam Lange, Pilgrim’s Wine Steward
Having trouble choosing a wine to accompany the Holiday feast? Consider this:
The bright, fruity flavors and crisp-tart
acidity of Cranberry Sauce always seems
to balance the wildly disparate flavors of
a traditional Turkey dinner. Similarly,
bright and fruity wines with soft tannins
and good acidity are the perfect choice.
Pinot Noir is traditionally the red wine of
choice to accompany turkey dinner, and
we naturally have our favorites (such as
Elk Cove, OR and Decoy, CA). However,
if you are of the mind to try something
unique, consider the juicily delicious
Moulin-á-Vent, Vieilles Vignes from
Diochon. This first-rate Cru Beaujolais
has plenty of bright cherry and cranberry
fruit along with autumnal, forest floor nuances. From Italy, we like the Cerasuolo di
Vittoria from Planeta. This Sicilian blend
of Nero d’Avola and Frappato has bright
fresh fruit and hints of fig.
We always recommend a nice dry Pinot
Gris (Pend d’Oreille Winery’s lovely
new release) or a dry Riesling (Pacific
Rim, Washington) for the holidays. But
recently, we are enamored with Austrian
Grüner Veltliners. Try the stunning Loimer, Kamptal Vineyard with its brilliantly
focused fruit, lush texture and crisp, clean
finish.
Rosé wines can have darker flavors than a
white and can stand up to assertive flavors
while maintaining a refreshing balance.
Try the Viña Aljibes from Spain. This
Syrah Rosé is dry, with spicy, berry flavors
and a lush mouth-feel reminiscent of a
graceful red wine.
If you find yourself serving a crowd, try
mixing things up a bit with an assortment
of wines. Let your guests experiment with
different selections and decide for themselves what they prefer.

ORGANIC WINE:
To Your Health!
- MICHAL BENNETT
WHAT IS ORGANIC WINE?
Like organic food, it is wine produced without using chemical herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, synthetic fertilizers or
preservatives, including added sulfites. The USDA’s Organic
Food Production Act of 1990 also limits naturally-occurring
sulfites to 10ppm.
SO, WHAT ARE SULFITES?
Sulfites are natural byproducts of the fermentation process,
but most commercial vineyards also add sulphur dioxide as a
preservative and anti-bacterial agent.
WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?
According to the FDA, one out of every hundred people
is sulfite-sensitive, experiencing allergic symptoms such as
headaches, hives, swelling of the tongue and throat, shortness
of breath, flushing and terrible “hangovers”. A person can also
develop sulfite sensitivity at any point in life.
ORGANIC WINE TODAY
Many wineries today are successfully making sulfite-free
wines using a blend of proven ancient methods and innovative modern techniques. Organic wine producers have even
banned the use of GMO wine yeast. As a result, organic
grapes and wines provide more naturally-occurring antioxidants, natural compounds and natural preservatives. In fact,
the recently famous wine compound, resveratrol, is a result
of the grape plant’s natural defense mechanism, or immune
system. But the taste test is the defining factor for each individual wine drinker.
Ask Sam and Sara about the organic wines (and beers!) that
Pilgrim’s Beer & Wine Department carries and drink to a
healthier you!
these wines for yourself ? Join Sam and Sara the two days before Thanksgiving
as they sample out the wines they recommend, both traditional and new, to
go perfectly with the fabulous Thanksgiving Dinner you will be enjoying on
Thursday.

Jayme Jayne Lip Moisturizers are all about keeping it

In 2009, Jayme Jayne

their body care business with two unique

products lies in the simplicity and quality of their
ingredients. Each lip balm is made in Spokane Valley,

Exceptional Turkeys
Don’t Grow On Trees.
- MICHAL BENNETT
Exceptional: extraordinary, unusually excellent,
superior. We at Pilgrim’s Market believe that offering high quality, delicious and healthy turkeys
this holiday season is a no-brainer. While conventional, name-brand Large White Turkeys may be
bigger and saltier, we want to encourage Idahoans
to consider enjoying a wonderfully different kind
of bird for their Thanksgiving table: Organic or
Free-Range.
But, why do we call our birds exceptional? We
first must consider the difference between conventional turkeys and those featured in Pilgrim’s
Meat Department?
Holidays too hectic?
Let us help!
PRE-ORDER TODAY!
By pre-ordering scrumptious side
salads and mouth-watering pies
from the Deli, soft artisan breads
from Pasty Depot and the perfect
organic or free-range turkey from
the Meat Department, you can be
sure that your Thanksgiving will be
the best ever with a little less stress
on your part.
CONVENTIONALLYPRODUCED TURKEYS
The initial concern with the conventional production of turkeys is the treatment of the birds. Today’s mass-produced turkeys are kept in
overcrowded, often immobile conditions and fed unnatural diets, resulting in non-developed
feet and legs, disease, death and serious disorders. As a result, most standard turkeys receive
a constant, low-level dose of FDA-approved antibiotics. This creates a vicious human cycle:
bacteria in our bodies build up a resistance to these antibodies, causing an increase in human
disease and the need to develop new antibiotics.
Standard US turkey producers also give their birds pesticide-saturated feed (over 940 million
pounds used in 2000), which has been shown to cause certain cancers, infertility, hormone
imbalance and neuro-toxicity in humans who consume the resulting poultry. They also inject
their birds with growth hormones to slow metabolism and increase weight gain. In 2002, the
European Union, after reviewing 17 studies, concluded that the use of hormones in meat production posed “potential risks to human health” and proposed a ban on the use of estradiol and
its derivatives in farm animals.*
ORGANIC & FREE-RANGE PRODUCTION
Turkeys grow healthier if they’re allowed to walk around in the open air and sunshine, free to
scratch the ground and peck at whatever they fancy. This is known as a Free-Range environment. It’s much more efficient for growers to pen their birds up in elevated wire cages so they
can’t move and merely eat and get fat fast. However, Free-Range growers believe that efficiency
and production at the expense of health and quality is “for the birds.” (Shelton’s Poultry, Inc.)
In addition to receiving humane treatment, turkeys allowed outside access produce meat with
21% less total fat, 30% less saturated fat, 28% fewer calories, 50% more vitamins and 100%
more omega fatty acids than those kept indoors. Certified Organic also guarantees that your
turkey has never been given feed containing dangerous pesticides, been subjected to bioengineering or GMOs, or been injected with harmful hormones or risky antibiotics.
IT’S ALL IN THE TASTE BUDS
In a salt and sugar saturated culture, it is surprising that we know what food truly tastes like
anymore. To meet the demand for more “flavor”, conventional turkeys are pumped with flavor
enhancers such as hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP), a salty additive similar to monosodium glutamate. But more artificial “salt” doesn’t add up to a better bird. Organic foods are
known and appreciated for their superior taste and quality. Taste tests show that Organic and
Free-Range turkey have more “turkey taste” than conventional birds, and their meat is juicier
and richer in texture. They are also lower in fat and water and higher in meat, B vitamins, selenium and protein. (Deistel Family Turkey Ranch).
This Thanksgiving, we invite you to taste and experience the difference a Deistel or Shelton’s
Turkey will make with your holiday meal.** We encourage you to put the health and taste buds
of your family first by choosing a Free-Range or Organic Turkey from Pilgrim’s Meat Department. But whatever you choose to fill your Thanksgiving table, we at Pilgrim’s Market wish you
a full and satisfying holiday with family and friends.

MANAGING STRESS
DURING THE HOLIDAYS
Stress is the body and mind’s response to any stimuli that disrupts its normal balance, and acts as a wonderful “warning” mechanism to let us know when to “fight” or “take flight.”
IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR!
Feeling pressed, depressed, and compressed? We
often know that the “season to be jolly” has arrived
when we begin to feel the mounting tension associated with “decking the halls.” To top it all off, “the
season” just keeps on creeping up sooner and sooner,
making it an even greater challenge to minimize
overwhelming feelings as the holidays come crashing
down.
STRESS RELIEF!
A preliminary study in humans suggests that fish
oil helps muscles respond to stress without effecting
heart rate or blood pressure. This beneficial effect was
demonstrated in a double-blind study
with 18 young adults who took 500
mg EPA+DHA for one month.

Population Of Substance Abusers. Neuropsychopharmacology 2005;30(1):S87–S88.
REDUCED AGGRESSION
Great news: According to Japanese researchers, you
are less likely to exhibit stress-induced aggression if
you are taking fish oil. In a double-blind test of 41
adult students, those taking the supplement for 3
months did not become more socially aggressive during mental stress, as opposed
to the placebo group that did
show significant jumps in social aggression as measured by
psychological tests.

At this time of year, it is
particularly important
to take your purified
fish oil supplement
every day.
Norepinephrine is released from the
adrenal glands in response to stress. Studies in healthy,
young, chronically stressed adults suggest that fish oil
supplementation may lower blood norepinephrine
levels. This is one more method by which fish oil may
help reduce stress response.

SUPPORT & PREVENTION
Fish oil has a proven track record of supporting the
body in numerous ways: improving stress management while increasing our overall state of well-being.
At this time of year, it is particularly important to

dosage that gives results to ensure a healthy intake of
omega-3 fatty acids.
