To help you do this, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services (WSPS) has launched new resources, all available online at no cost. Just a click away, these resources can help busy people who are short on time become compliant and integrate health and safety into their daily business practices in the easiest way possible. “Providing fast access to easy to use resources was a top priority,” says John Aird, Manager, Industry & Partner Relations for WSPS. “Time is a luxury. Small business owners and managers are constantly juggling multiple responsibilities, including regulatory compliance and risk management. Since a single injury can have a devastating effect on a small business and the people who work there, knowing how to protect your people can make all the difference.” These new resources were developed with input from business owners in many different sectors who understand that health and safety is important and good for business. The result: practical information and solutions that recognize the unique requirements of different industries. 1. Getting Started on Safety: A How-to Guide for Your Small Business — a resource guide that offers simple and clear instructions on how to get started with health and safety 2. Getting Started on Safety: A Roadmap for Your Small Business — an industry-specific road map for health and safety requirements 3. Small Business Safety Made Easy — an industry-specific introductory brochure that discusses how health and safety contributes to your business, and introduces WSPS as a source of high quality resources, information and consulting 4. Getting Started on Safety: A Small Business Success Story — a suite of six, industryspecific success stories demonstrating how real businesses developed and improved their health and safety program, and effectively leveraged that success to protect and grow their business. To find out more, please visit www.wsps.ca/SmallBusiness or call 1-877-494-WSPS (9777) Connect with us 5 Business After 5, hosted by Sunshine Carpet and Flooring The next Business After 5 will be hosted by the Orillia Museum of Art and History on February 18th. An attractive overall compensation package plays an important role in retaining an employer’s most valuable assets - its employees. As a business owner, have you ever considered implementing an employee health benefit program as an alternative to a pay raise? Giving employees an increase in pay may not always be the most cost-effective method of compensation. Cutbacks in the health sector and increasing sales taxes are both contributors to the cost of drugs, dentistry, hospital and paramedical services also becoming less affordable for your employees. Consider also that your workers are paying for these necessary services with their hard earned dollars after income tax deductions. The following chart illustrates that perhaps a raise in pay costs your business more than you think! Consider a pay increase of $2,000 for an employee or spending the same amount on a benefit plan. A pay increase of $2,000.00 per year for one employee increases the employer’s cost $2,312.70 to provide a net tangible benefit to the employee of $1,225.36.* An employee’s health expenses (incl. drug, paramedical, vision, travel and extended health care) and dental expenses often add up to far more than the $2,000.00 target increase. A benefit plan gives employees some comfort and security of knowing that they have coverage when they need it. The result is improved morale and greater employee retention. The Chambers of Commerce Group Insurance Plan® is the #1 group insurance plan across Canada for small businesses. A plan can be customized to best suit your situation and fit your budget. Call Your Local Benefit Plan Advisor at 1 888-942-2396 7 We would like to share with the membership the company names of our long standing members, e.g. 10, 20, 25, 30 years, etc. Email admin@orillia.com and advise us of the year in which your business joined the Orillia District Chamber of Commerce.
